Woke up this morning to the Leonard Bernstein Omnibus episode about musical comedy. In 75 minutes, he's manages to squeeze in numbers from "The Black Crook," early Irving Berlin, Victor Herbert and so much more with singers, dancers and actors in full costume. What stuff TV was unafraid to do back then. Nothing like it could happen now.

TOD: Prom was my first formal event. Back in 1980, pastel blues were in style for tuxes, but I had to have my top hat, white tie and black tails. Found a photo when I was in Louisville recently and took a photo of it. So, here it is, all fuzzy and aged:

My date, Allison, didn't go to my school, but she ended up marrying a classmate of mine. Saw her at the recent reunion and she looks remarkably like she did. We had fun catching up.

TOD:

The first event in which I wore formal wear was my cousin's wedding.

My other cousin and I were candle lighters.  I guess I was around 11-12.

My wife tells me that I "dress up good," but I'm really a jeans and t-shirt guy.

I avoid ties whenever possible.

As the Bernstein episode continues, it has been wonderful to see a very, very young Carol Burnett cast as Ethel Merman in "DuBarry Was a Lady" singing "Give Him the Ooh-La-La." I love the score for this show and wish somebody would record it one of these days. "It Ain't Etiquette," "Friendship," "Well, Did You Evah," "Katie Went to Haiti," "Do I Love You?" "But in the Morning, No" -- all wonderful.

Title: Re: FABULOUSSSS
Post by: elmore3003 on August 14, 2010, 07:06:19 AM
Good morning, all! Last night the Oaf Above Me was so noisy dropping things on the floor and moving about that all the sound came right through the earplugs. This was around 12:30, so I had dozed for a bit. I finished watching ADVANCE TO THE REAR and turned off the lights about 11:30.

As to the bootleg copy, it was fair, but the score seemed pitchy, and, while I found much of it funny and the cast good, I felt I was watching a film cut by someone who didn't care how well the story was told.

Today, proofread my old "Meadowlark" orchestra parts to the new score, and that's my day.

Formal wear? My Aunt Jean, whose social climbing ambitions were as grand as Hyacinth Bucket's, got tickets to the national company of CAMELOT, around 1962 or so, and I was forced to wear a tux because she had purchased in Cincinnati a formal gown and she couldn't con my Uncle Bud into wearing a tux, I hated the tux then and still don't care for all the frou-frou. CAMELOT was fun, and I still have memories of the show, the best being how spectacular and beautiful it was and the worst beng how sexless the big romance was.

Like most folks, my first tux was for the high school prom.  I love wearing formal wear.   I always rented until 1994 when I was invited to the British Stunt Ball in London, England.  The Lovely Wife and I went to Nordstrom's and bought the whole regalia...tux, shirt, socks, shoes, cumberbund and tie, and studs and cufflinks.  I have since worn it on many occasions...probably the spiffiest were WGA Awards or maybe a screening in Cannes.

Back from Scissor Sensations, where Tina waved her magic wand over my head and made a new woman of me.  Actually, she just shampooed, cut, and styled my hair, but it sure felt good.  Richard brought me home and now he's off to Dave the Barber for his haircut.

Since I believe the battle with the Oaf Above Me will get uglier, I decided to print out all of mu correspondence between him, the landlord and me. If found this funny one from the Oaf dated Feb 6:
Unfortunately, the walls and floors in these apartments are very thin. I am a light sleeper and would prefer quiet in the morning but I hear your music coming up through the floor (every day).

Since he's speaking of an approximate time between 8:30 am and noon, perhaps I should lend him my earplugs?

Hey everybody.  I have survived 24 hours without any form of "sickness", so I'm hopeful that the removal of dairy from my diet might be the answer.  I'll be heading out to purchase some Lactase pills to put along side my box of Imodium soon.  Today will be finishing getting the house in order for the family visit tomorrow (still can't believe it's tomorrow) and I do have to head out to play a wedding this afternoon.  That's all.

BK, I think it's great you are going to NYC for a book signing.  Also, knowing you, you will get the best hotel rates you feel necessary to make the trip worthwhile.  Of course there will be a HHW gathering in NYC.  Maybe even some people you don't wish to see in person1!!!  It will be huge success and you will have a grand time.  The JetBlue rate was awesome, also.   I don't think the DP and I will travel on another carrier, ever.  So, they better get their butts to Europe soon!

It stinks that the posts here have been at an all time low, but they have been QUALITY!  Some of us prefer the quality over some of the other posts that really amounted to some people accounting their day step by step.  Those who are here post when we can.  Now if HHW had an iPhone app.... I'm just sayin'  :)

Thank you, DR Matthew.  Yes, they went ahead with the meeting, minus me and our newest board member.  She followed the ambulance to the hospital and stayed with me in ER until Richard got there.  Our president was out, too, having the first of 2 outpatient procedures, so the wonderful young woman who took my job at the library was presiding.  They apparently accomplished something, if the follow-up emails are any indication.

Watched several ADAM 12 episodes in a row. Now I know why I was so familiar with the streets of LA and the San Fernando Valley long before I had ever visited there, it is because in every episode the officers mention street names, and of course I  grew up watching ADAM 12.

And now that I have driven the streets of LA many, many times, when  they  mention a street on ADAM 12  I can almost always know what part of town they are in, whether they are in the valley or in LA/Hollywood. It tickles me and makes me happy, for some odd reason.

Back from my travels.  All is finally well at Public Storage, so that's good.  Not one envelope or one package today and that did not make me so happy.  The envelope had best be here on Monday and you can only use the "no stamp" routine once.

I am not sure how I could keep Nicky and a new kitty separated for a couple of days like the Humane Society keeps telling me to do.  I only have one air conditioner.

It took a long time for Callie and Boo to be able to be together.  6 weeks to be precise. I hated keeping Boo shut in a bedroom that long, but they are now friends and I'm glad I did it

I fell asleep for a little while.  I am still quite tired.  I'm trying to decide if I want to take a shower, get all dressed up (dress code at club requires dresses and dress shoes for women, jackets and ties for men)  and get a cab to go see Jon Krakauer at the reception tonight.  I like his books just fine, but I am really tired and must leave very early in the morning. I'm thinking I may stay here and sleep.

It is quite warm today in Sherman Oaks.  This hotel has a gorgeous rooftop pool and the whole family, all the cousins and all, just had a marvelous swim together.  It's cool for my kids to have so many cousins--I grew up in a very, very small nuclear and extended family, and it's really heartwarming to see all these kids play together who have grown up around each other.

Peter Filichia recently wrote a column about being bothered by someone playing loud rap music outside his apartment. He responded by playing the soundtrack of "Sound of Music" even louder. Very funny piece.

I know that just thinking about hearing "I Am Sixteen ..." is enough to scare me away.

Well, things went well in the Hill Country today. Stopped at Ronnie's BBQ in Johnson City, a hole in the wall with the best ribs in the biz. And the owner had just brought in two or three slabs from the grill. They were still sizzling in the center. So, when he asked which end I wanted them cut from, I just pointed to the center. They were perfectly seasoned, practically falling off the bone and just right. Without the sauce, that is. It tasted like doctored ketchup. So, the less said about that the better.

Hill Country weather was hot, hot, hot. Walking from the car to the wine center was like watching an ice cream cone melt at fast forward speed. Thankfully, the rose' wines were cool and the three sold-out panels were attentive. They seemed like they wanted to hear what we had to say. That's different from years ago when they just wanted to drink heavy red wines and complain about rose'.

If you want to visit Amoeba Laurel Canyon is not the way to do so.  Just take the 101 south all the way into Hollywood - exit at Cahuenga and turn right (going south) - you'll pass Hollywood Blvd. then come to Sunset - Amoeba is on the southeast corner - if you pass Sunset the Amoeba parking lot will be on your left almost immediately.

Today has been a very hot day, here in the Olympia/Tumwater area.  I slept in...although I went to bed very late, so I really didn't get as much sleep as I would've hoped.  Last night, I came home and without even turning on the TV, I decided to peruse the CastRecL digest e-mails that I've been getting.  I had about 260 unread messages (out of 353 messages total)!  That goes all the way back to last Thanksgiving!  I certainly didn't read every message within every e-mail digest, but I read all the topics, and checked out the ones that I was interested in.  It took me about five, count 'em FIVE HOURS to get down to 58 unread messages.  I don't plan to ever go that long without keeping up with them, again. :P

Neither Heather nor Michael knew who Alex Rosenkrantz was (or is), and I forgot to ask how they got it, but I like silver, so I bought it.

I've finished with my viewing and am ever so restless - maybe I'll do another little jog.

Yes DR GINNY - my wife does look like a movie star......

It is most interesting that she was also my wife in CHEAPER BY THE DOZEN.....

I was so restless I did another jog - a mile and a half, so today was a total of four and a half miles.  Not bad for an old codger.

I finished watching a favorite Japanese science fiction film titled SEKAI DAISENSO (The Last War).

It is a very somber 1961 film with a Japanese family going about their daily life until a nuclear warhead is shot off and heading to Tokyo. The ending is not a happy one.

I've been watching Mission:Impossible over the last week or so. I started with Season four, followed by Three and then did Season One.

I came to the conclusion that they should have stopped making them after season three as the plot lines became repetitive.

I don't plan to buy seasons four through seven. Barbara Bain and Martin Landau are sorely missed.

It was hard to watch Greg Morris smoking all the time. He passed away because of smoking. All lot of characters seemed to smoke on these shows.

Is it true that the first married couple on TV to share the same bed was Herman and Lily Munster?

TOD:

My first time dressing up in a suit was when I was 6 years old in 1970 when my sister got married.

I have a picture of it someplace.
