Well, you've read the notes, the notes were long and seemed like a day, and now it is time for you to post until the long cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: ASSIDUOUS!
-
I must post this again:
A VERY HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DR ELMORE!! ;D
-
It's raining in Tumwater and has been for quite a while...there's a lot of it coming down, too.
It's nice to listen to. :)
-
Happy Birthday to Dear Larry!!!
Have Eggs, Bacon, Hash Browns, Buttered Toast and Jam and cups of coffee with real cream for breakfast!
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, ELMORE!
-
Thanks for the condolences re: my friend, columnist James Bacon.
Frankly, I was really surprised that none of the obituaries that I read mentioned that he was once the lead columnist for The Hollywood Reporter. They didn't even mention that in their obit.
As I recall, he took over the spot when Mike Connolly died.
That's when I first met Jim, when he was working at the HR...a long time ago.
-
And the word of the day is: ASSIDUOUS!
And The Song Of The Day Is: I'M WALKING BEHIND YOU
-
HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY ELMORE

I watched the new Criterion version of THE THIN RED LINE last night. I'd seen it previously in a theater when it first came out, then later on DVD.
I know that a lot of people think that this is the greatest war move ever made, but I'm not one of them.
Yes, visually it is absolutely stunning and it has some powerful scenes and terrific performances (e.g. Nick Nolte, John Savage).
But, if any movie could afford to lose 30-45 minutes of its running time, this is it.
The storytelling in this picture is almost non-existent.
Yes, I know the movie is about the battle for Guadalcanal, just like GONE WITH THE WIND was like the Civil War.
But, what's THE THIN RED LINE really about?
Who is its protagonist?
So many characters appear, then disappear (sometimes without explanation), throughout the film, which makes that a difficult question to answer.
-
If anybody on this board listens to Gregg Hunter's radio show, The World of Entertainment, I'm going to be interviewed on it tonight (19)...right after composer Charles Fox.
I've no idea where the show might air in your area, but I'm scheduled for 9:30 pm (Pacific Coast Time).
That's 11:30 here in Austin, about an hour past my bedtime.
I'd better take a nap this afternoon.
-
Happy Birthday to DR Elmore.
[shadow
Maybe you could leave a note for the oaf inviting him to a party telling him to be quiet today on your birthday.
-
I must get moving. It's my niece's miniature golf birthday party. I don't have to go till 10am. But I need to shower, dry my hair (which takes a long time), find something to wear, and eat.
And after all that I won't even get to play golf! Apparently my job is to run around with my 16 month old niece Jadie. Hopefully she takes her morning nap or she'll be crabby!
-
Good morning, all! Today I turn 64, but I don't think my mental age is much older than 10 or 12; it's the bags under my eyes, the wattles, the bald pate and the inability to move that give me away. I have put the laundry into the washers and mopped the floors. After the clothes go into the dryers, I'll vacuum the apartment and tidy. Then, I'll bathe, have some breakfast and read the birthday cards that have been arriving since Thursday.
This morning, I had 64 emails! Usually, it's about 20, all of them ads, but most of today were birthday greetings or Facebook announcements that my wall is getting lots of posts. It will be fun to read them later. At 4 pm, the foundation producing the Victor Herbert recordings is throwing a small bash for me and 8-10 friends. Selecting a few was difficult because there were so many I wanted to invite. And that's my birthday.
So, to the following HHW family members from last night, DRs vixmom, cillaliz and George, and from this morning, DRs Ben, Druxy, ArnoldMBrockman, and Jennifer, thank you all so much for the birthday felicitations! I hope I haven't missed anyone so far!
In spring, 1980, just a little over 30 years ago, I saw at the long-gone Thaiia on West 95th Street THE FIRST NUDIE MUSICAL with a composer friend, Thom Heinrichs, from the Drama Book Shop. We laughed all the way back to the subway, said goodnight, and two hours later I went back for the final showing of the movie. The next day, everyone at the Book Shop had to suffer through our praises and I said, Bruce Kimmel is insane and I want to work with him. The wish took me another fourteen years to achieve, and in the past sixteen years I'm sure both Bruce and I have had moments to regret that wish and to rejoice that such a partnership happened. I know that BK saved a career when it was at its nadir and I owe much to him, including this fantastic site and the dysfunctional but highly erudite and entertaining nuclear family that we've all made from it. Thanks! I do love you all.
Now, if we could just sell that damned property!
-
Happy Birthday, DR elmore! Hope you have a great time!

Sunday morning greetings! After whining again on Facebook about not being able to connect here, we went downstairs for breakfast and - VOILA! - now HHW opens for me! It's a mystery.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO DEAR ELMORE
I hope the year ahead brings you good health, financial security, professional fulfillment, joy, love and a quiet upstairs neighbor!!!
Thank you, dearest vixmom! Outside of love, which I will never be good at or lucky in, and the mystery of what's happening with the Oaf and parent above me, I hope that everything else you wish for me comes true. Love would be nice, and occasionally I stumble and think I've found "the one" but at this age I think it will never happen. Some days I'm full of self-pity over this circumstance and some days I'm happy I'm not involved. I certainly function better when I'm not miserable over it.

I am sick I need to use the restroom here at HHW it's an emergency and you cannot deny me my rights.....it's in the Constitution....
Whaddaya mean NO? What is this YUMYUM DONUTS?
-
The closing night performance of NEVER TOO LATE went very well. The cough did NOT return during stage time thanks to Satori, a product I am sure others here at HHW are familiar with. I can't recommend it highly enough.
Audience was most attentive and receptive.....lots of laughs.... Then we struck the set and put everything away and had some pizza and conversation. It was a long night - but now our 49th season is history....on to #50!

Did you enjoy the GOLDILOCKS dances?

We had a nice turnout last night for the Rosses and they did some really nice stuff. I frankly wasn't a huge fan of their most famous chart topping aggregation, but as a duo last night they really were awesome.
-
Happiest of happies, DR Elmore. I hope this year is your best yet and the start of even better years to come.
-
DR Druxy, I remember enjoying Thin Red Line when it came out. But that said, I saw the same director's movie about John Smith and Pocahontas and finding it about an hour and a half too long. Great nature shots in both. Sort of a "the birds don't care if there's a war going on" comment or a "why have war in the midst of all this beauty" comment, which shows that even the comment is muddled.
-
Congrats to DR JMK as for the Rave in the Nave

As to any elmore regrets in our working relationship - not a one. Frustrations, of course. Regrets, none, because in the end the work is so good that that's all that matters. Sometimes art isn't easy, but when you're working with people who know their stuff, one deals with it and then years later all that's left is the wonderful art.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY DEAR DEAR FRIEND AND DR ELMORE!

I just had a very depressing morning. I had to turn down, not one, not two, but three TV commercials from my agency. All of them were for political ads, and as a State Employee, I am not allowed to participate in political activities of any kind - even as paid talent.

We are back from the Cathedral, where Fr. Richard got to observe not only the celebration of the mass, but afterwards the baptism of infant twins, Gabriella and John. We went to First Watch for brunch, which I'm letting digest before doing my cardio walk for the day.

Thank you, DR TCB! The church business part is now completed and vacation can begin. After I take my walk, we're going to Cocoa Beach Pier to look at the ocean and have dinner. Tomorrow, EPCOT and dinner with friends and Tuesday, Kennedy Space Center. Wednesday, we'll just chill here at the hotel until check-out time, find someplace nice for lunch, and then head to the airport for our 4pm flight home.

Definitely, he got the singing genes -- and I'm not sure from where since neither of the parental units can sing worth a darn -- perhaps the milk man? (Just teasing... about the milk man, I really can't sing...)

TCB,
Bruce and I will be having a late lunch.
And, although I understand your disappointment at having to turn away lucrative work, it's still great to get the offers, yes?

Do we ever have a problem with the alignment of Pluto?
Pluto was downgraded, you know. Apparently, the PTB (powers that be) didn't think Pluto was very important. :(
-
Off to lunch soon.
TTFN.

I also did a two-mile jog, and I'm going to do my best to only eat a salad for lunch.

Just had an e-mail from a customer asking me why he hadn't received his copy of Sugar yet - he'd ordered it on 9/5. It is so hard for me not to be sharp with these sorts of e-mails, because the official ship date for Sugar, clearly stated on the order page, is middle of October. Can people simply not read?

Pluto got kicked out of the solar system....or downgraded and is no longer a planet. He'll always be a planet to me...

Poor squirrel. You are lucky you didn't lose power.

The other side of the street lost their power. I felt bad for a realtor who was just starting an open house down the street. We all offered flashlights, but she didn't seem too amused

Love the clip DR td.

DR ELMORE - Facebook is full of positive comments about the ISO show last night.....Scott Robinson posted a couple of photos. I think he is in your friends list as well.....he directed THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X earlier this year.
For you:
-
And the ladies themselves! ;D
-
The girls need some sun - they look white as sheets :)
-
So, last night I realized that it was my turn to tell the children's story at church this morning. I hate when that happens.
-
We are back from a delightful late afternooon/early evening excursion to Cocoa Beach. We stood at the end of the pier and watched the tide come in and 3 cruise ships go out from Port Canaveral. The surf was especially high, courtesy of Hurricane Igor. We had a lovely dinner at Atlantic Ocean Grille and then went back out to the end of the pier for more wave-watching.
-
That sounds like a lovely evening, Ginny.
-
Yes it does. :)
-
A GREAT BIG HAPPY BIRTHDAY WISH TO DR ELMORE!
I wish you a year full of lots of pleasant surprises--some small, some big, but lots of them!
Thank you, DR Jeanne!
I'm back from a festive bash at Rosa Mexicana at 62nd and 9th Avenue and I'm a little tipsy at the moment.
-
DRs Jane and Laura - it was a lovely evening and the glass of wine at dinner enhanced it immensely.
-
DR JRand60, thatnks for posting the photos. I have to go thank a lot of posters on Facebook!
It's been a great birthday. Maybe the best ever.

After my accident it was months before I dared to have any wine. I waited until I was basically off the pain meds and then substituted the wine for the pill. The wine was far more enjoyable.

What story did you end up telling the children?
-
Is vixmom very close to a posting milestone?
-
Well, I pulled up some photos and printed up some "nature cards" and told them about the God's beautiful miracle: the monarchs and their migration.
Coincidentally, Marilyn made some butterfly cookies for the coffee hour, so it looked like we coordinated it.

Ooooooooooooooohhh YES! (he types as he falls to floor) It was a fantastic meal and fabulous folk! I'm sleepy.

I'd love to stay and chat, but it's been a long day and I'm about to fall asleep - 'night!

Maybe she baked them knowing you were reading today's storyteller. When I see butterflies now I think of you.

It's 9:18 pm here in Austin, and I have to stay up until 11:30 to do Gregg Hunter's The World Of Entertainment radio show, which will air on the Pacific Coast at 9:30.
Now, if I can just stay awake.

The installation service was extremely nice - I was so proud of the Vixter we have any number of assisting ministers, deacons, communion assistants, council members- the Vixter was the only lay person asked to read - everyone else was an ordained minister - and she was as poised and clear and articulate as any of them!
One particularly nice thing -- the Vixter actually attends the youth group at a different church than our own - (the Presbyterians).... the minister there is a wonderful man and has taken an active interest in our search for a minister - he attended the installation this afternoon - it was such a pleasant surprise to see him there
I have been mentioning the Prebyterian minister to our new Pastor and suggested that they should meet and I am so pleased thah they now have plans to meet and discuss ways our churches can work moe closely together - we already work together on free community dinner once a week and now the two youth groups are getting togther next week
for the first time in years I'm feeling excited and happy about the direction my church is taking

I am so glad you had such a nice day Elmore -- it was nice to come home to your voice on our machine tonight as well!
-
It's exciting to feel excited about church, Vixmom. :)
-
Our minister was out of town, so our speaker today was the district moderator. I see him a lot at all these district meetings I go to. I have no idea what he thought about my story.
-
I am soooooo loving tonight's episode of "Mad Men". :) :) :)
-
I just read that Cammie King died earlier this month. She only did two movies of note and one was just a voice performance.
-
Good Evening!
And which Food Truck are you rooting for? ;)
The one that won!
-
Although I would like to try the food of the truck that came in second
-
I'm not looking forward to tomorrow. The audit will be fine, I just hate this sort of stuff. Then I have a full day and 2 meetings after work so it's going to be a long day.
-
Glad you had a good day Elmore!
-
As to any elmore regrets in our working relationship - not a one. Frustrations, of course. Regrets, none, because in the end the work is so good that that's all that matters. Sometimes art isn't easy, but when you're working with people who know their stuff, one deals with it and then years later all that's left is the wonderful art.
I wish a world full of people would realize this and get their overinflated egos out of their work relationships.
-
I just had a very depressing morning. I had to turn down, not one, not two, but three TV commercials from my agency. All of them were for political ads, and as a State Employee, I am not allowed to participate in political activities of any kind - even as paid talent.
I didn't know that. That's too bad.
-
John G., I guess I also missed the fact that you were traveling. Continued travel vibes.
Thank you.

I really wish I could say the same. My church has become so political that sometimes it feels as if I'm going to a Tea Party meeting rather than a service. I am probably going to have to search for a new church home when I return from vacation, which bothers me because I have so many good friends there. Yet I don't go to church to hear jingoistic blather about the country.
-
I could use one of those margaritas right now, DR Elmore.
-
Interview Vibes for Druxy
Ditto!
-
Sorry about the acting gigs, DR TCB. That's a shame, but I understand where the gov is coming from on this one. When I worked for newspapers, we couldn't even put a campaign sticker on our cars or in our front lawns. All we could do was vote, and some papers really don't want their reporters to do that.
-
10:20...and I'm still awake.
::)
Most nights, I turn off my lights right after Jay Leno's monologue...and he comes on at 10:30 here in Texas.

Just saw a job posting for a Red Bull marketing person. One of the requirements: "Lives and represents the Red Bull brand." Now that's asking a little much, isn't it? Or is that why I don't have a job, because I refuse to "live" the brand.

Ah...but she was just a young little squirrel. I felt really bad for her.

Last night we watched King Lear with Ian Holmes - I am afraid I was very dissapointed with the production which I understood had been "critically acclaimed" when performed in London...too much shouting and screaming - the Fool was played witha thick Yorkshire accent - even my British husband had troublre making out what he was saying
-
Dang! I have my first Friends of the Library Board meeting at the same time as the first Dancing with the Stars. Oh Well. I have a DVR
-
Jane - I finished The Thirteenth Tale- I would recommend it for your book discussin group - in fact I wish I belonged to a group with whom I could discuss this book

I tried watching that several times on video and never could get into it, even though "Lear" is a favorite of mine. I prefer the Russian version, which, as I understand it, doesn't have a single line of Shakespeare's in the movie.

Congrats!

Druxy, don't read this!
Am off to bed. Night, all.

Congratulations, DR vixmom!!!

And congrats to DR the vixter for being selected to read at today's Installation.

And since the handyman is supposed to be here at 9:00 tomorrow morning to finally fix the shower... And since he will have to turn off the water to the building at that time... So, if I want to take a shower and make breakfast in the morning... Well...
Goodnight.

Congratulations, DR vixmom!!!
And Congrats to Jose! (sorry that it's a bit late)

A parody thought about PROMISES PROMISES closing in January
in which Fran Kubelik appears to the PROMISES PROMISES producers in a dream.
KNOWING WHEN TO CLOSE
tune of KNOWING WHEN TO LEAVE
Go while the grosses are good
Knowing when to close
May be the hardest thing the money folk can learn.
Go!
Don’t recast these parts,
Listen though it smarts
Fly while you’re all in the black
Knowing when to close
Should let you give a hundred-plus percent return.
Fly!
Payback helps assure
Funding for a tour
Though you keep hoping,
week after week, as you think of each star you know,
Hope upon hope that you’ll find your own “Peters and Stritch”
Though you pray that
Lightning would strike if you only got so-and-so
Chances of lightning like that twice in one season are a b*tch
Keep all your
eyes on the signs, don’t become the show that ignores
Dollars and sense as recoupment goes up in a flame
And the season's
got a March hit with the same basic theme as yours
Not only that, it stars maybe the street’s biggest B.O. name
Radcliffe and HOW TO SUCCEED
Them’s all the tea leaves you need.
Should you close?

I had a very nice and long meeting with the singer, and we'll be working together on an act for her. We got all the details worked out and are already batting around ideas. She may also join our merry troupe here.
