Good morning, all! I think i am still a bit hung over and I'm going back to the sudio around noon for piano solos and piano & cello duets. Last night's party was a lot of fun: much guacamole and chips for the first two hours - Dona was coming late from a master class on opera production at the Met and Rob Berman was late from helping his partner move a dance studio - and I really couldn't tell you what each guest had. Zak Stains and I both had the most wonderful chicken pie. And pomegranate frozen margaritas.

I have to run to the market this morning for bread, and I need to compile a list of violin-piano duets by Herbert; our funder is now thinking of adding them to the mix. I thought, if we do them, that our first choice should be the concert master of the Met, since our cellist is the principal cellist for the Met, or I'd ask my friend Bob Zubrycki.

DR Sam, thank you for the birthday wishes.

BK, if your stocks are like the ones my mother left me, they might have been worth something until 2008!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Safe Travel Vibes & Xylophones for our BK on Thursday!  And some good weather, too! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
TOD: I bought my first shares of stock when I was a teenager and my parents were trying to instill in me a desire to be frugal and save for tomorrow. The shares were in an electric company that was later sold and when that happened, trying to get the shares cashed out was something of a nightmare as I wasn't living at home anymore and had no idea where the stocks actually were.
I now have shares in the New York Times, which came about from working at one of their papers. Back then, the company matched a certain amount that you bought. They were worth something then, because the stocks actually split at one time and I bought a new car by cashing in the new stocks. I still have some, but they haven't paid a dividend in the past two years (go figure!).
And that concludes the tales of my trivial excursions into the stock market.
I've been thinking about my trip to the Inn at Little Washington last night. It was quite an experience when taken as a whole. This is one of the most highly regarded restaurants in the nation. The setting was elaborate and quite chichi. The service was good but not overbearing. The people were actually quite cordial and had good answers to our questions.
If you sense a but in all this, there is. I am finding that chefs are investing far too much creativity in their appetizers and starter courses than they are in the main courses. I loved the spicy sashimi-style tuna salad with avocado and a touch of sesame oil that started out the evening and that was followed by an even better plate of macaroni and cheese with country ham and shavings of fresh black truffle. But the pecan-crusted lamb was undersalted before cooking and no amount of salt added could make it sing quite as wonderfully. The other entree I tasted was similarly underwhelming in comparison with the starters.
I should have made do with a series of small plates. Yet it was still great to have been there.
TOD:
I'm not savvy or learned enough to dabble in stocks, though through various circumstances I do own an odd lot of them.
I guess my most interesting stock is Disney, which started out as two shares that my sister gave to me as a Christmas gift.  Over the years, Disney split its stocks again and again and again and today those two shares have multiplied into 56 shares (though judging from the annual dividend they pay, it's not worth a heck of a lot.)
TOD, I have my Thrift Savings Plan that I had when I had my cushy federal job.   I took out 1/2 of it right before the market went down, so I was lucky - but there still isn't much in it.  I don't look at it very often.  it's growing slowly but surely.  I no longer can add to it and everything else I make is going back into the business. So....I guess I'll just keep on working forever
bk - I think you should be asking for NON-TRAFFIC AND NON-STOPPED PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION VIBES for your upcoming visit. Over the past week there has been some more "emergency work" on the NJ Turnpike, George Washington Bridge and in the Lincoln Tunnel. And the 1 Train will not be operating again this weekend. And now the Harlem River Bridge is currently closed due to a massive fire on the piers underneath the bridge. -There's no Metro-North service in or out of Grand Central until further notice. In any case...
What I think of is "smooches."
"Hey!  Give me some sugar, Sugar!"
Except down South, it's "Gimme some shugah, Shugah!"
When I was really little, my mom and one of her lady friends would have fun with me.  My mom would say, "Give Jean (or Mary or whomever) some sugar."  And I would. And then she would say, "I'm jealous. Give me some sugar!"  And I would.  And then her friend would say, "I'm jealous."  And back and forth I'd go,  very frustrated at making everyone jealous.
I remember it to this day!  And THAT's what I think of when I read or hear about "Sugar"!.
Then I went to the engineer's house.  The authors of the show were there, we discussed the nature of how things will proceed from here and what I thought was necessary to make this sound good rather than the muddy mess it currently sounds like.  They then left, and I spent forty-five minutes just working on the band sound - especially the piano and drums - and through some very careful EQ work we got it to sound so much better.  Also, I nuked the guitar tracks completely because they were the culprit in terms of muddying everything up including the vocals.  The guitarist was just playing fuzz pad constantly and it was just awful.  Once that was removed suddenly we had blessed clarity.  Now Grant Geissman will be coming in to lay down some selective guitar passes on certain tracks only, and we're also bringing in a reed player to play on about three or four tracks that will really benefit from some extra color.
Go up to the Bronx to get the new valve... Come back and replace the valve... Then turn the water back on.  ??? ??? ???
Needless to say, I don't want to be here for any of it.
Laters...
Why doesn't he get the valve first, come back turn the water off, replace the valve, turn the water on again. My way sounds easier :-)
T.O.D.
I have never purchased individual stocks, but I have had money invested in various stocks thourgh our Deffered Compensation Program at work.  I usually followed the adivice of several different co-workers who know far more than I do.  I was doing very well until the big stock market fluctuation.  I try not to think too much about how much I lost, since as my friends tell me all of my losses are just on paper.  Unfortunately, paper is our form of currency, so paper losses are very painful
Now the majority of my deffered comp is resting quietly in the Savings Pool, where very little ever happens to it.
I don't remember who had the obsession with hotel carpeting, but I was at the Hyatt in Burlingame on Saturday and just knew I had to take a picture of the carpet for HHW.. Here it is!!!
I don't think that obsession is a very nice way of describing Laura's Hobby!
BRAINEX Indiana Style earned 14 Encore Nominations.......and that may go up to 16, I can't imagine that Scott, the Director, and the choreographer, and maybe the lighting designer will also get nominations (announced at the awards dinner).....
Two of the numbers "Brain Tap" and "I Need an Earthman" were nominated in the Best Musical Number category.
Full list here......you can scroll down to MUSICALS to see them all.
Anybody gonna watch any of the new or returning show premieres tonight?
I heard that The Event and Lone Star are supposed to be quite good. So i will give them each a chance (although The Event is gonna repeat on Saturday night which is when i'm gonna record it).
Tonight is the premiere of Chuck, Dancing With the Stars, House, Castle, Hawaii Five-O...
I'm looking forward to the return of Castle.  I've set Hawaii 5-0 to record.  The reviews seemed good but the preview we saw isn't as promising.  It looks a bit like Miami Vice.  We are also recording Chase.  The Event looks intriguing.    In the past I've had trouble staying with this kind of show.  I might set it to record and decide later.
How did the audit turn out, Cilla?
The auditor gave up looking for the $5.21 cents that my client ledgers are off.  I have to update him in the next 2 months when I find it.   Good grief!   Anyway, my books are just fine but I'm still going to meet with the accountant tomorrow to see if we can get the whole system computerized.  I use Quickbooks to balance the checking accounts. I can't figure out the trust account part of Quickbooks, so I just haven't used it for my client ledgers.  That's part of what I want the accountant to help me with.
It will also take a step out of the current process we're using and make billing a lot easier.
Title: Re: TWO SMART WOMEN
Post by: Cillaliz on September 20, 2010, 04:15:23 PM
Anyway, I'm really glad I'm done with that.  It'll be years before they come back. The auditor was really nice.  He said they've been in town for a week and still have at least 3 weeks left.  So that's 2 auditors, and 1 month to audit the lawyers in town.  That's a lot of auditing
That's a completely different issue. ::)
There have been so many shows (like FlashForward, Invasion and Surface) that never even make it past the first season and the big, giant question of the series never gets answered.  This would just be one more. :P
I spent an hour with a prospective immigration client today. We discussed how we would proceed in trying again after the consulate in Vietnam denied his wife's visa.   At the end he was shocked that I gave no guarantee that this time she would be granted the visa, asked me to give him all the money back he had just given me and left.   I have no problem with this, but how can people expect to get a guarantee about what a government official will do?  especially after a denial.  Sheesh!
They've all got way too much shopping for things besides wine, and there's no real information about the size of the wineries, the number of acres planted to grapes, the agricultural approaches or really much of anything. it's just: pour the wine, then buy the something and get out.
Only one of the three wineries was still locally owned and perhaps that's why it was the most fun.
Managed to take a stroll along a nature trail and I guess someone before me was just doing what comes naturally.
Anybody gonna watch any of the new or returning show premieres tonight?
I heard that The Event and Lone Star are supposed to be quite good. So i will give them each a chance (although The Event is gonna repeat on Saturday night which is when i'm gonna record it).
Tonight is the premiere of Chuck, Dancing With the Stars, House, Castle, Hawaii Five-O...
I'm looking forward to the return of Castle.  I've set Hawaii 5-0 to record.  The reviews seemed good but the preview we saw isn't as promising.  It looks a bit like Miami Vice.  We are also recording Chase.  The Event looks intriguing.    In the past I've had trouble staying with this kind of show.  I might set it to record and decide later.
I'll probably record Th Event when it repeats on Saturday. Those are my favorite kinds of shows (the complex ones that are very intricate to follow). I hope this is one is good.
I spent an hour with a prospective immigration client today. We discussed how we would proceed in trying again after the consulate in Vietnam denied his wife's visa.   At the end he was shocked that I gave no guarantee that this time she would be granted the visa, asked me to give him all the money back he had just given me and left.   I have no problem with this, but how can people expect to get a guarantee about what a government official will do?  especially after a denial.  Sheesh!
That does sound odd. Maybe he would have been satisfied to just have you explain what you thought the chances were if you do what you do. But how could he expect a guarantee?
DR Cillaliz did you watch Dancing With The Stars?
I think my favs were kyle and lacey. And Derek and Jennifer.
I thought Florence and Corky were funny. And I think they were too hard on Audrina. And way too easy on Bristol (who I thought was the worst).  Even though I'm not a fan, I think they were also too hard on The Situation.
We are back from a fun afternoon and evening at EPCOT.  We got there about 1:15 and did a lot of the rides and attractions up front before finding our way to the Beach resort hotel to meet our friends at the Cape May Restaurant for dinner.  It was a fantastic seafood buffet.  After dinner, they walked us to a boat dock where we embarked back to the park to walk around the World Showcase and find a good place to watch the fabulous fireworks show over the lagoon.  We just skimmed the international pavilions and agreed that someday we'd like to come back and do those in detail.
Yesterday, I went back to the local Sunday afternoon 3PM live music corner club and realized I do not belong in a group of middle age surfers.   I was really out of place.  I listened to Broadway all morning and really do not like all that 1960's rock n roll let's have a beer and get loaded music at all. ???
Anyway, I think that's what they were playing.    ???
I watched both THE EVENT and LONE STAR this evening.
Both of them held my interest, but I think that both of them, plot wise, are going to turn into one big muddle.
These are the kind of stories that would work better in a single motion picture or a limited series format, rather than 22 episodes and (possibly) multiple seasons.
In other news...
I went to MoMA today to check out their current Matisse exhibit, "Matisse: Radical Invention, 1913-1917" (http://moma.org/visit/calendar/exhibitions/969).  Alas, I have to agree with most of the critics of the show.  It is a good exhibit, but it's almost a little too focused for its own good.  It also covers a very transitional period in Matisse's work, which is truly transitional. There are some "major" canvasses, but there's also a whole lot of filler.  I felt it could have been pared down to three galleries, focusing on four or five major works.  When I exited the exhibition, I felt both under- and overwhelmed.
Title: Re: TWO SMART WOMEN
Post by: JoseSPiano on September 20, 2010, 10:24:38 PM
And then I made a pass through "Counter Space: Design and The Modern Kitchen (http://moma.org/interactives/exhibitions/2010/counter_space).  It was quite interesting until two of the guards "challenged" my taking of pictures in the gallery with Monkey. I told them that I've been taking pictures with Monkey for almost two years in the galleries MoMA - at least in the galleries where photography is allowed - and that some of my Monkey pictures are even on their website. -"Well, you need a press pass to do that." I even passed on the name of one of their curators as well as their Director of Public Relations.  "Do you have a letter from one of them giving you permission?"...
And that's when I left...
And as I was leaving, I tweeted MoMA and their PR person... They will be talking to the guards on Wednesday. (The museum is closed tomorrow.)  :)
...And then I went to tonight's Times Talks (http://nytimes.whsites.net/timestalks/) "A Conversation with James Earl Jones".
What a wonderful way to spend 90 minutes! The Times' TV and Theater reporter, Patrick Healy, was the interviewer for the evening, and he and Mr. Jones did indeed have a great conversation. There was even one point where Mr. Jones asked to turn the tables for a bit, and he asked Mr. Healy about his time in Afghanistan and Iraq as a reporter and the effect that had on him.
The event was taped for later broadcast on their website, but there were a few things that stuck in my head:
"If you love words, you must find a way to say them out loud properly." -This was in reference to one of Mr. Jones' high school teachers, and how he learned to deal with his stuttering.
"If you fall in love with the sound of your own voice, no one will want to listen to you."
I teared up a few times when he was talking about his teachers and his acting roles (which he calls "his children"). His Passion for his Craft is so natural and passionate, so real and heartfelt.
I also got a kick out of Partrick Healy confessing that he's a major "Star Wars" fan, geek!  -And it was also interesting to learn that James Earl Jones only worked for one day on the original "Star Wars" movie since he was only doing voice-overs for Darth Vader.  He only worked two days on the second "Star Wars" movie.
DR Matthew - I hope you had a wonderful first rehearsal of Sunset Boulevard.
*Btw, what is the official title: Sunset Blvd. or Sunset Boulevard?
I think it's Sunset Blvd.  I have never really seen it spelled out.
Rehearsal was challenging.  "Let's Have Lunch" is a bear (and not the good kind).  No matter how much prep I did, it's still really challenging.  I really should have had a rehearsal pianist.  We got about 3/4 of the way through the number and will finish it tomorrow.  Of course, more than half of the cast doesn't read music, so while the notes are easy, the timing is not.  The orchestration doesn't help anyone, either.  Reality is it's the most difficult number in the show, so when it's learned, it's all downhill from there.
So, tomorrow we'll dive back in.
One thing that our library system does is after books have gone to book sales (each library friend's group has its own sales with discarded books take from the book sale shelves at the Service Center) and anything that's been sent out to several sales and not sold is sent to this dealer who sells them on Amazon.  A certain percentage of those sales comes back to the library.  The seller keeps the books and we don't get them back if they don't sell, so we don't have to store ALL those book nor do we have to pay to have them sent to recycling.
Jose, the musical director, Tom Griep, was in drag.  I'll write more about the show in the notes.  Doug Haverty and I went out after to eat.  I hadn't eaten since noon when I had my sandwich and no fries so I was starving.  But we decided to split nachos and that was just incredibly stupid of me - way too heavy and I'm really annoyed at myself.  Tomorrow will be a heavy jog and a one-sandwich day as will Wednesday.
