Well, you've read the notes, the notes were all about Nips, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently sucking on their Nips.

As promised, here's the new Kritzerland release.  This is absolutely fantastic music and great value for money.  You know the drill - it's 19.98 plus shipping (total: 23.73) payable via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

“ARE YOU THERE?”

Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack release – two great scores on one great CD:

The Whisperers
Music Composed and Conducted by John Barry

Equus
Music Composed by Richard Rodney Bennett

Bryan Forbes’ 1967 film of The Whisperers is, sadly, barely remembered today.  But it contains one of the finest performances ever committed to celluloid – Dame Edith Evans, who, at the time, was seventy-nine years of age.  As the New York Daily News said, “Here’s not merely the performance of the year, it is one of the few truly great performances by an actress in film history.”  Evans’ performance of an elderly, lonely woman with a fantasy life, who hears voices (the “whisperers” of the title), lives in seedy squalor, and who barely can exist on what she receives from the National Assistance, is so haunting and touching and magical – the emotions that play across her face at any given moment for any given reason, the way she carries herself and cocks her head and asks “Are you there?” – well, it’s simply not possible to offer enough praise .

The film itself is bleak and downbeat, and it didn’t catch on with audiences (it was a very strong year for film, with The Graduate, Bonnie and Clyde, Guess Who’s Coming To Dinner, Wait Until Dark, Cool Hand Luke, The Dirty Dozen and more), but was a hit with critics.  Apparently enough Academy voters saw it, because Evans received a Best Actress nomination.  She was in very good company – Audrey Hepburn, Katherine Hepburn, Anne Bancroft, and Faye Dunaway – but the award went to Katherine Hepburn.  Evans did win the Silver Bear at the Berlin Festival as well as a Golden Globe and BAFTA award.

For the score, Forbes used John Barry – they’d already done several pictures together, including Séance On A Wet Afternoon, King Rat, and The Wrong Box. By 1967, Barry had already become a legend, thanks to his iconic scores for the James Bond films.  Whatever alchemy sometimes happens between director, composer, and subject matter, happened repeatedly with Forbes and Barry and Barry’s score for The Whisperers is not only one of his best, but a perfect marriage of film and music.

“I AM YOURS AND YOU ARE MINE”

Peter Shaffer’s 1973 play Equus was a sensation from the minute the curtain went up on its original production at the Royal National Theatre at the Old Vic in London.  Shaffer based his play on an incident he’d heard about involving a seventeen-year-old who’d blinded six horses.  Instead of reading about the actual incident, Shaffer concocted his own tale about what might have caused the young man to do such a thing.  It was compelling theater, and filled with Shaffer’s incredible wordplay, anguished characters, and innate theatricality.   The play mesmerized audiences – it had a very long run in London, and ran for 1209 performances on Broadway.  It has been revived many times since, most recently starring Richard Griffiths and Daniel Radcliffe.

For the 1977 film, Sidney Lumet was engaged to direct, with Shaffer adapting the play for the screen.  Richard Burton, who’d played the role of psychiatrist Martin Dysart for a brief time on Broadway, starred, alongside the original Alan Strang, Peter Firth.  The film version had a fantastic supporting cast, including Colin Blakely as Alan Strang’s father (Blakely also played Dysart during the original London run), Joan Plowright, Harry Andrews, Eileen Atkins, and Jenny Agutter.  Burton, Firth, and Shaffer all received well-deserved Oscar nominations.

To score the film, Lumet turned to Richard Rodney Bennett, with whom he’d worked on Murder On The Orient Express.  Bennett, born in 1936, began scoring films in 1957, and had already become an amazing film composer, turning in wonderful scores for films in just about every genre – Far From The Madding Crowd, Billy Liar, The Wrong Arm Of The Law, The Mark, The Nanny, Billion Dollar Brain, Secret Ceremony, Nicholas and Alexandra, Lady Caroline Lamb and many others.

Bennett wrote a sparse but extremely effective score, using a very unusual orchestration for an ensemble of lower string instruments – ten violas, eight cellos, and six basses.   Bennett’s ravishing underscore compliments Lumet’s visuals and Shaffer’s dialogue perfectly.

The Whisperers was originally issued on a United Artists LP and had a prior CD release on Ryko.  That release, as was the case with several Ryko issues, had dialogue tracks added between the score tracks, which, for most people, completely interrupted the wonderful flow of Barry’s original LP sequence.  For this release, we have removed the added dialogue tracks and remastered the sound.

The original United Artists LP of Equus, along with its prior CD release (also on Ryko – now long out of print), interspersed five of Burton’s monologues (and a scene with Firth) among the score cues.  Some of the monologues retained their own track and had no underscore, and some were bookended with musical cues.  The result was a very nice listen for the first couple of times – after that, one wished that the score could simply be listened to as a score, on its own.  So, for this release, we’ve done exactly that for the first time.  We present Bennett’s score first, and then the six dialogue tracks – a couple of which have underscore repeated from the score tracks.  Listening to the score on its own is a fantastic experience and since the prior CD preserved the original sequence of the LP, we felt justified in presenting this in a new light.  As with The Whisperers, we have also remastered the sound.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98 plus shipping.

CD will ship by the end of November – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Good morning, all!

I slept late, not by choice but because of the Oaf Above Me, who had very noisy sex at 4:42 this morning. I wanted to break down the door and pil the damned sofa bed he unfolds nightly between 11pm and 2am with loud thuds.

Today I have some music to transpose for a friend and then I will check out discs 4 and 5 of the BONES 5th season.

DR FJL thanks for the link yesterday to the Barbara Billiingsley interview.  Most entertaining and informative.

My favorite moment was when the interviewer said:  "Tell us about the set on the show."

Barbara jumped a bit and said after a pause:  "Well....there wasn't any...."

The interviewer asked again....and Barbara said again.... "We never had any.....huh....OH the set......I thought you said sex."

Good morning. Last night I did something stupid that may not have turned out to be so stupid.  I've been using tea tree oil soap I bought from an Amish stand while taking care of Ricky because of the anti-fungal properties.   Well I decided to use a little to clean Ricky's arm before putting on his medicine.  I put it on a rag wiped in on then immediately rinsed it off with a wet rag.  Then I got on the computer and discovered tea tree oil is toxic to cats!!!!!    I ran upstairs and grabbed him and poured water on his leg  (with accompanying howling climbing up my back etc.

I didn't put another dose of his medicine on it and stayed with him for a couple hours.  he seemed fine, so I went to bed.  Then I got up about 5:30 and went in a slept with him for a couple hours.  Then back to my room and slept a couple more hours.  When i checked on him this morning his leg looks a lot better than yesterday.  I did put his medicine on it today.

The next show was Promises, Promises, which I have to say I enjoyed very much.  Of course I didn't see the original version  :) so I have nothing to compare it to.  Sean Hayes was very appealing, and Kristin Chenoweth, though maybe not the best fit for the role, sang beautifully.  Kate Finneran, who won the Tony, had just begun her maternity leave, so we saw Molly Shannon in the role.   She was funny, but I think she needs time to polish her performance.

Thanks, DR Jrand60!   Here's more:

On Thursday we went to Central Park.  Paul wanted to see the Bethesda Fountain, the boathouse and other points of interest.   Later we went to see La Cage aux Folles.  We had front row mezzanine seats--great view.  The show was very enjoyable.  Douglas Hodge really was great in the role of Albin.  And Kelsey Grammer as (can't think of the name!).    I was glad to see Christine Andreas but only wished she could have sung more.   After the show we took pictures (as we did with Promises, Promises).

We took a tour of Radio City Music Hall on Friday.   It was a lot of fun.  While I've been there before (the first time was in 1969), it's been quite a while.  One of the Rockettes gave a little talk and posed for pictures.  And I found out that "Rockette" has nothing to do with Rockefeller Center.  The name is a derivation of the original name for the troupe, which was the Rockets --they were from the midwest , I think.

Friday's show was A Little Night Music.  It was interesting to see a different take (I saw Angela Lansbury and Catherine Zeta-Jones last year).  Elaine Stritch did her schtick, which is funny.  And Bernadette Peters sounded great. She was very gracious after the show.    Paul and I were in the back of the line and one of the theatre employees offered to take our playbills up to her to sign--that was a first!

On my last day I said goodbye to Paul-he's starting his train journey back to California (he's stopping in Chicago for a few days).

I got a great bargain on a ticket for La Bete.  The theatre has same day rush seats for $27 and I was lucky to get one.    My seat was in the third row on the side.

I enjoyed the show very much.  Mark Rylance has basically a  monologue for almost 30 minutes.  He's really incredible!  And David Hyde Pierce and Joanna Lumley were great too.

I went to the stage door and got a picture with Ms. Lumley, who couldn't have been nicer.  And Mr Pierce (or is it Hyde Pierce?) graciously signed my playbills ( I had two, but didn't really expect him to sign both, but he did).   The stage door man said that he doubted that Mr Rylance would be coming out since he had guests, so I went on my way.

Coincidentally, my nephew and his wife were in town for their first year anniverary.  I met them in Little Italy for some delicious pizza.

Then it was back to midtown.  I had found out that our own Mr Barrett was back in Chicago (the musical), so that was my final show.  I was  little worried I wouldn't make it since I was still at the TKTS booth at 7:40.

Brent was great as always, as were the female leads (Charlotte D'Amboise and Leigh Zimmerman).  I had a nice chat with Brent after the show and went back to my hotel.

So that's it.  Back to reality and work (not until Tuesday, thank goodness)!

I made it through the first two Mexican Red Riding hood movies...they were both swell! LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD AND HER FRIENDS was better then the first film, I thought.

I then watched LITTLE RED RIDING HOOD AND THE MONSTERS (1962)...well this movie would have scared the bejesus out of me as a little tike, but as an adult I loved it! It not only had Red, Stinky the skunk, and Ferocious Wolf but it had Tom Thumb and the ogre (both from a previous film titled TOM THUMB).

The monsters included a siamese twin monster, a vampire, and Frankenstein monster, a dragon, a dumb witch...and all are led by the witch from the snow white story (looking exactly like the witch in Disney's Snow White).

Oh, and there was the Morning Fairy added into the mix. What a fun film.

I am pretty sure I saw one of these movies at a Saturday matinee back in the early 1970s, but I don't know which one it was.

I remember when I saw Lily Tomlin's Search... - during her "revival" at The Booth - her assistant collected The Playbills and other memorabilia that people wanted signed at the stage door, and brought them up to her dressing room to sign. It actually turned out to be a nice system. When Miss Tomlin came out the stage door, her assistant distributed all the signed items, and Miss Tomlin took some time to pose for pictures and chat with her fans - without having to deal with people shoving Playbills in her face.

HA! ;D

And that reminds me of when I was doing A Chorus Line in Houston with Baayork Lee (the original Connie) and Fran Liebergall (the original pianist and eventual Musical Supervisor)...

During the middle of the run, we attended an event at a "special interest" establishment. Not only did they show that crazy(!) version of "At the Ballet" with Julie Andrews singing all three parts, but they also played clips from the movie version of "A Chorus Line".  -Neither Baayork nor Frannie had really seen those clips before.  The looks of "horror" on their faces during the Opening Combination are still etched in my brain. ::)

On Wednesday my friend Paul and I went to the Times Square Visitors' Center for Seth Rudetsky's radio show.  He interviewed singer/actress Julia Murney who performed "All That Jazz" splendidly.  His other guest was a composer--I think his name was David Friedman (sound familiar, Jose and elmore?).  He was very entertaining.

Ah, yes, David Friedman: "Help Is On The Way", "My Simple Christmas Wish", "Listen To My Heart", etc.  -Plus a bunch of stuff for Disney.  He's currently one of Kathie Lee Gifford's writing partners. He writes the "Everyone Has A Story" songs for "The Today Show" with her.

He was the primary composer for the Late Great Singer  Nancy LaMott

Has it ever been "settled" as to whom he wrote "Listen to My Heart" for "first"? It's just sad - and a but "weird" (that's so not the exact word I'm looking for) - that both Laurie Beechman and Nancy LaMott are no longer with us.

I sent a letter of complaint to the landlord about the Oaf. If I'm found dead, start with him. I didn't mention my suspicions that he's dealing drugs at night in the clubs or coming home coked up.

My high school drama group took the backstage tour of RCMH (when I was in high school). Since Liberace was doing his show there at the time, the usual itinerary of the tour ended up getting adjusted. We didn't end up coming face to face with the Maestro himself, but we did get to spend some extra time touring the rehearsal rooms - I still remember the aqua-sequined grand piano (I think it was from a Peter Allen show). We also got to stand in the back of the hall to watch the closing minutes of Liberace's show, before we headed onto the stage to watch the changeover for the next show that day. Very cool to say the least, especially for a bunch of 16 and 17-year old theatre geeks.

Am enjoying most of "South Pacific" despite its flaws, which I could go on and on about and yet somehow they don't seem to matter. Danny Burstein may be the best performer in the show. The Lt. Cable is good wrong for the part. Too much swagger, too little that is ingratiating. So "Younger Than Springtime" doesn't sound right coming from him.

Back from a nice lunch with dear reader Jeanne - first time eating Indian food since the bad business back in 1972.  I played it safe and had tandoori chicken tikka - after a little salt it was very tasty.  I tasted Jeanne's curry, which was not to my liking.  But, even though I'm full, it was really only a chicken breast, onions, and some kind of Indian pita-like bread.

In the insanely small world department:  I just recently heard from a fantastic vocalist who did a bunch of sessions for me years ago, one of which won me the Jazziz Magazine Award.  She lives in Austin (in fact I think I've recommended that Druxy go hear her), and it turns out she is now married to Robert Rodriguez' main orchestrator.  Robert Rodriguez of course filmed BK's and David Wechter's THE FACULTY, though this gentleman did not orchestrate that film.

For my sister's birthday last month, my gift to her was a day of handymanning (without me complaining about it ;)).  Today was the day that she chose.  I went over there at about 10:30 and we took down a wire shelf, moved a set of shelves to where the wire shelf was, moved another set of shelves, we went to The Home Depot and my sister bought some new toilet seats (finally!), I installed the new toilet seats (very easy), and then I put up a hanging ironing board that my sister had gotten several years ago.  That all took about five hours.

Good Evening!

After doing two loads of laundry earlier, I went ahead and headed up to Ft. Tryon Park for the 75th Anniversary Party of Ft. Tryon Park.  Apparently, they had jousting(!) earlier, but when I got there, there was a great little bossa nova band playing.  And then to round out the festivities they had the Calexico Cart (Mexican food) and the Souvlaki Truck (Greek food), serving the masses.  -And, apparently, there was a lot of "mass". The Souvlaki Truck actually ended up selling out. In fact, they did the same amount of business in four hours today that they usually do in eight when they're down in their regular spot in Chelsea. At least I got some of their yummilicious Greek Fries.

After that, I went to my parents' house for some dinner.  I then came home and tried to get on-line, but I've been having problems.  I tried powering down my modem and turning it back on, but that didn't help.  I called Comcast customer service and the guy said to try powering down the modem and turning it back on.  Again, it didn't help.  He did some tests and found that the problem is with my modem.  It's an older model and I should get a new one.  Right after we hung up, I tried again and was able to get back on-line. :)

It's too bad that they couldn't have brought back all of the original cast for the broadcast - including the ensemble members.  There really was something very special about the original company.  -And, yes, the Lt. Cable... Well... 'Nuff said.

I, too, had some quibbles with the production. Alas, I also think it was not videotaped to it's best advantage, but I'm not sure a constant wide shot of that very wide stage would have been ideal either.

*And, yes, Danny Burstein should have won the Tony that year for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. Although, I was happy for Boyd Gaines even though I preferred his "Herbie" at City Center over the one at the St. James.

Watched the season finale of Mad Men.  The most amusing thing about it are the AMCs promos, trumpeting the finale as if it was going to be some huge, amazing, fantabulous, life-altering thing, like a season finale of Lost or something - when what you get is really just another episode - and I kind of like that the producer has the courage to do that.  Yes, there was one major surprise and that was fun and involved a character I've really been enjoying, but basically there were no earth-shattering cliffhangers here.

I love Indian food, but I do meet a lot of resistance to it. Yet who could a bowl of makhani dahl, buttery lentils? Or egg curry? Our Indian restaurants in San Antonio vary all the time, good one visit, oddly bad the next. But we have a Pakistani place that is outrageously good. The tawa fish with slabs of potato are out of this world. I'm now hungry all over again.
