Post by: bk on October 20, 2010, 12:16:24 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were from Hainesville, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've informed me they're definitely coming home in time for the new Guy Haines album because they like Guy's MOOsic.

Good morning, all! I slept well until 2:10 am when the Oaf Above Me returned with his usual door slam accompanied by his clomping and slamming about for around 10-15 minutes; then he left the apartment and I fell back to sleep. I have no idea if he returned after that, but I slept well. I have no memory of any dreams, and since some of them have been quite bizarre, I find that a pleasant change.

The Oaf is home and he isn't alone; I just heard a bit of a woman's voice along with a heavy tread across the ceiling.

This morning we record Metropolitan Opera bass Valerian Ruminski, followed by the formidable Met soprano Margaret Jane Wray, who will finish up her set before recording a duet with Zak Stains. The session went really well yesterday, with a lot of funny and nice folk visiting and singing: Margaret Jane, Korliss Uecker who's on a little scooter or crutches (she's traveling with both) because of ankle surgery, Rose Sullivan, George Dvorsky, Zak Stains, and our 22 year-old baby in the group, Steven LaBrie. They all got on well, we recorded our ensembles as well as four solos by Margaret Jane and one by Steven. The auditorium of the Academy of Arts and Letters, where we are recording is starting to get chilly (it will be realy cold in January), so we had to bring in space heaters to keep the hands of our talented pianist limber.

Our producer has decided he doesn't like one of our singers and he knocks her every chance he can get. It's pissing me off for several reasons: she has a lovely high soprano with a silvery and bright edge to it he calls "shrill"; she saved our asses when we needed to bring in another singer and she literally learned the music at the last minute; and he heard her record a duet on the first day she recorded and has heard nothing else she's done. I am not happy he's pulling this crap.

Great news on Guy's return. When can we expect the disc? (If it's in the notes and I didn't retain it, blame the fact that it's way too early for me to be up.)

I was watching THE H MAN last night.....and here is my question for ASK BK day....

Are the Japanese names that we see a literal translation of the symbols OR are they a phonetic translation of the way they are spoken....because the names as pronounced in those movies are not quite the way they are spelled in the subtitles.

His taste is so questionable at times, I suspect he likes Miss Grayson's chirping!

Everytime I hear "This Was Just Another Day" from the OBC of SEVENTEEN, I think it's the perfect Guy Haines song.

It was a moody train ride to Conshohocken this morning.  Even though the sun was shining in Philly, there is a thick fog hugging along the Schuylkill River and the train route--you couldn't see further than 30 or 40 feet.  It made the morning commute very atmospheric and mysterious.

Wednesday morning greetings!  In a very rare occurrence, I was the last one up this morning.  By the time I got out of bed, Richard was doing laundry, Rob was cooking oatmeal for our breakfast, and a couple of guys were replacing the window in our living room (from the outside).  Guess I needed a sleep-in.

Forgot to mention that THE SOUND OF MUSIC in HD was also a "Sing-A-Long" in which very few members of the audience actually "Sang-A-Long".

I rather liked that.

There were a wide age range of people and children who were about my age when I first saw it.

My question today is for DR Cillaliz.

Dear DR Cillaliz:
If the police are asked to do a welfare check and no one answers the door at the house, can they enter to check on the person? (Obviously, if Grandma fell and broke a hip or if someone died, said person cannot answer the door.)

If they do enter and then find something illegal or unhealthful (such as squalor) can they do anything about it, since they didn't have a search warrant? In the case of squalor, can they report it to the mental health authorities or health department?

I've been told that I can try to remove the spot. It is right under my lip and probably would not look that bad on a 4x6. But it would drive me crazy in an 8X10.  I have something called Microsoft Picture It. But I don't really know how to do anything elaborate.

I watched this all the way through.  I think it better than the critiques of the day.  Michael Redgrave is particularly great.  I now have to watch a five-hour version of the play I have with Joan Hackett, Bruce Davison, and Roberta Maxwell.

Frances would have been a great Vinnie.

I guess Nancy Coleman who played Hazel was a college chum of Frances' - she was in the class ahead of Frances who then got ALL of the leading roles that Nancy had been getting.....so there was some animosity there.

I am thinking the play version may be great......Russell just seemed too old to me, and of course with her as Lavinia, they had to cast the mother older....and Paxinou made the LOVE story between her and Leo Genn and bit ludicrous.....which may have been the point.

And, to put it politely, Paxinou was not in any sense of the word, attractive.

DR Laura:  If in your scenario, the police were alerted that there could be a problem or there are concerns from someone and that led to the welfare check, they can enter and if there are things in plain sight - drugs. squalor or whatever, yes they can report it.  To whoever.  I would think a welfare check would be worthless if they couldn't follow up on what they find.

DISCLAIMER - this isn't legal advice.....just had to do that

Welcome seven GUESTS.  It's funny that our GUESTS are the first ones to know about the Guy Haines project because our regulars are WUSSBURGERS.

First of all, Congrats to BK and Guy Haines on the new Kritzerland project!!

I wasn't Wussburgering last night.  After getting my brand new (but obviously tempermental) cable modem just the day before yesterday, I got home last night and had to turn off, then on the brand new cable modem.  It worked quite well for about an hour and then it just turned itself off.  I couldn't do anything to get it to turn on and stay on.  When I unplugged then replugged the power, the lights would blink for a few seconds, then they would all turn off.  I called Comcast customer service and was told that the best thing would be for them to send someone to my abode to look at it in person.  So, they're coming tomorrow (Thursday) sometime between 10:00 a.m., and noon.  So, I only have Internet access at work, which is where I am now. :P

In the stupid things department:
I stubbed my toe yesterday--or so I thought at the time. Apparently it wasn't just my little toe--I bruised much of my foot, as well. In any case, I'm hobbling around. I don't think I broke anything, but it still hurts and it's painful to put weight on it. A friend who has broken his foot twice said that the only thing that helps is to immobilize it. Fortunately, I have nothing that must be done today (things that maybe should be done, but nothing imperative). So it looks like it's a day of rest for me.

DR JEanne:  I once slipped on my kitchen floor (in Italy) and my foot slammed into a door.  Pain was excruciating.

I went to doctor thinking I may have broken a toe (or toes).  After examination, I was told I had probably dislocated my big toe but that it had reseated itself.  My whole foot was black and blue for a week after that.

Re:  the decks on our house.  The top one is off of the master suite.  The middle one runs the whole width of the house and is the "main" floor, the floor you come in on from the front.  There's access via two bay doors in the great room and kitchen.  The bottom deck is off of the office/party room.  I want to add steps going down from that one into the dog run so that I can let the dogs in from there as well as up above (don't think you can see it, but there are steps from the big middle deck that go down to ground level).

DR Jeanne - I'm so sorry to hear about your mishap and your sore foot.  Several years ago I got up in the middle of the night and stubbed my little toe on the corner of my dresser.  By morning my whole foot was bruised and swollen, so I went to our doctor who's also the physician for our high school football team.  He took one look at it and said, "Yup, looks broken."  There was really nothing to do for it and I hobbled around for weeks.  On the bright side, you'll be able to predict a change in the weather...

Back for a moment - the helper and I had a lot of stuff to do, including a Costco run.  Amazingly, when I opened the freezer to my refrigerator, which I rarely do, I found a whole box of M&Ms coconut candies - couldn't believe they've been here all this time and that I could have been eating them :)  We'll rectify THAT situation very soon.

My brother, a professional photographer, took this photo of Gigi Perreau and me at the book signing Sunday.

It's the only one that came out blurry.

The reason is that, walking in behind us as he snapped it (you can see her "shoulder") is June Wilkinson, and I think that shook him up a bit.

Another good recording day: Valerian Ruminski did "Belle O'Brien" with a brogue, "The Song of the Bagpipes" with a Scottish burr, and was quite touching on "Wild Oats," an unpublished somg about a rich old man wanting to be young to sow some more wild oats. Its lyric is by Glen MacDonough, who wrote BABES IN TOYLAND and I thought it might have been intended for Barnaby, but I think the song's too sad for such an evil character. Maybe it's a reject from WONDERLAND or THE ROSE OF ALGIERS.

Margaret Jane Wray recorded her last three German lieder; tomorrow morning we'll record her and Zak Stains on the Spanish American War anthem "Columbia," along with two of Zak's ZIEGFELD FOLLIES numbers and Korliss Uecker's group.

I need a nap.

DR Jeanne. One summer I decided to join a sand volleyball league.  The very first game I was playing barefoot and broke my big toe. It was awful.  I got xrays and everything. The next day the first call I had was saying it wasn't broken, so just wear a sock or soft shoes.  The next call I got was an "Oh, wait, it is broken" call telling me whatever I did, make sure it was supported and don't run around in socks or soft shoes, lol.   I walked with a cane for a while.  It was kind of fun. Much better than a crutch

I invited my parents to come to my place for Thanksgiving this year.    Mom talked to my SIL who told her who she had invited to their house for thanksgiving then after a long pause said "well, you can come too if you want to"  mom didn't exactly take that as an invitation, so they are seriously considering coming here.  I think it would be fun.  Mom wants to eat out and this way I would have plenty of time over the holiday to tear out carpet, strip wall paper and paint.   It would be great to get the whole room done over the holiday so I can just decorate it and enjoy it.

I wasn't going to have TV in here, but I think I'll call and see if they can put in a hook-up.   It would be nice to have that.  I think I'll use this room all the time in the winter.  The living room gets cold and this room is very warm.  I can't wait to get started.  But Ricky has to get better first and be introduced to the girls so I can shut them all out of this room while I work on it.  And yes, to me this sounds like a lot of fun!

BK, about Guy Haines' new album...do you know the music of John Bucchino?  He released a CD of his songs about 10 years ago (Grateful: Songs of John Bucchino (http://www.amazon.com/Grateful-Songs-Bucchino-Various-Artists/dp/B00004SBV2/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287624632&sr=1-1)) and I think his music would fit Guy Haines' voice very well.  "That Smile" is a duet sung by Liza Minnelli and Billy Stritch.  The published songbook has the solo version, but I really like the duet version on that CD.  There are several other songs that might work for Guy, as well. :)

Just a thought.

Gotta agree about Paxinou.  A bit of bizarre casting that I didn't quite fathom.
