Tonight, my sister and I are going up to Seattle to Dimitriou's Jazz Alley (http://www.jazzalley.com/) to see The Manhattan Transfer!  The Manhattan Transfer are performing there from Thursday (last night) until Sunday, and they're doing two sets each night.  We're going to stay for both and will have dinner in between the sets at the club. :D

We still have things to watch. We may finish the Farmer's Daughter (with Loretta Young and Joseph Cotten). We started last Saturday and got interrupted.

Oatmeal is calling me. Cranberries (dried), walnuts and cinnamon. Oh, and coffee.

Good morning, all!  I slept very well. The Oaf Above Me came home, as usual, right after I turned off the lights around 10:15, and that was the last I heard of him. I wish I could sleep so soundly every night.

Today is our last day of recording for this round: we have mezzo-soprano Rose Sullivan this morning followed by Valerian Ruminski. It should be a short day. I'm hoping we can get one of the piano pieces finished as well, but that depends on our pianist.

I have no plans beyond that. Once the recording is over, I'll head home, check the mail, probably turn on the tv and take a nap. I've got to do some research this afternoon and tomorrow for a meeting on Sunday about turning this set of "Apalachian Carols" into a stage piece. The director gave me a CD of four carols and I'd like to find more information on them or some alternate possibilities to present.

TOD:
DVD: last disc of BONES Season Five, a couple of operas. the three blasted Netflix items stil sit here
CD: bluegrass/folk Christmas music, Guy Haines, Liz Callaway, Barber of Seville
VCR: possible holiday gifts for DR MBarnum

Very disappointed at the Pwoject Wunway wesult last night - with someone left out and two rather undeserving people left in....and the announcement of the guest judge - a reality show/recording "star" nobody - leaves me with no real desire to know the result....or at least to see the result.....next week I can find the result anywhere on the net.

Thanks for the vibes for my niece. She did not throw up again after I left her. And I don't think she cried in pain either.

But she tossed and turned all night. So my sister decided to keep her home from school. She was not happy about this.

She absolutely loves school. Is this normal?  She is only in kindergarten. But she only knew one kid before (from soccer). Although in her daycare after school she knew 2 other kids.

DR Jennifer - RE: Frozen Chocolate - That's been around for a while. There are some candies - such as Charleston Chews (which is a chocolate coated nougat bar) - which are actually preferred "frozen". -They get a nice "crack" and "snap" when they're frozen, and then as you chew them, they morph as they warm up.

Yes, chocolate should ideally be eaten at room temperature, but there is something nice about the extra chill from time to time. And if you've ever had a Dove Bar, or any sort of chocolate-coated ice cream bar, you've already had a sort of frozen chocolate (bar).  It shouldn't be that "shocking".

Yeah, that was quite a reaction.  However, I will say, even though it was sort of painful to watch, it was nice(?) to see a truly genuine, albeit heartbreaking, reaction.

On a related note... Since I happened to be walking around Lincoln Center during Fashion Week... And since I happened to spy two of the finalists walking around and posing for pictures on the Plaza, well... I guess that was sort of a spoiler for me.

I seriously think the judges made a mistake in their choice.  Two of the final three were predictably boring...one hasn't had an original idea all season that didn't look like last weekls dress.  And "granola" isn't going to look better in high heels!

For those DRs in NYC who may want to attend the staged reading of "Evening Primrose" on Monday, some tickets were released to TDF according to Jane Klain (from the Museum of Television and Radio) via the Sondheim listserv. The TDF tickets are (were?) going for $32, down from the "benefit" pricing of $275.

Last night, I watched quite a bad motion picture on the DVR entitled Dead of Winter. It’s really hard to believe that this piece of cheese was directed by the great Arthur Penn, but then I read that he replaced the original director, said original director also being the writer of the film. And the writing is the problem. It’s just dreadful and stupid beyond repair. The film seems to have been “inspired by” or is an unofficial remake of the wonderful Joseph H. Lewis film, My Name is Julia Ross. One character in Dead of Winter is called Julie Rose, and the lead character played by Jan Rubes is called Joseph Lewis. Mary Steenburgen can’t do anything with her poorly written character, and Roddy McDowell has been made to play so over the top that it’s embarrassing. In fact, the only thing that works about the film at all is its excellent musical score by Richard Einhorn – that is top-notch. The hi-def transfer looks like it was just a regular transfer turned into hi-def – in other words, it didn’t look too good.

That's from bk's NOTES back on July 3 of this year, BESERK (http://www.haineshisway.com/archives/002920.html).

Oh! And in regards to the changing release date of "Evening Primrose" - and this may have been posted here before, and if it has, I'm sorry for the redundancy - but Jane Klain of the Museum of Television and Radio, also posted this on the Sondheim listserv:

Quote
he official release date is Oct. 26.  The reason that the April
release was postponed was that I found a pristine black and white 16mm
print in the CBS vaults in March and E1 delayed the release date so
that they could use that copy instead of the one at the Paley Center
or Sondheim's copy.

They have done a handsome job of the packaging and there are wonderful
bonus features.

Project Runway's elimin-ee was very hard to watch last night.  I don't think I've ever seen a contestant on any reality show take their elimination quite so badly.  I worry for this person's mental health.

I seriously think the judges made a mistake in their choice.  Two of the final three were predictably boring...one hasn't had an original idea all season that didn't look like last weekls dress.  And "granola" isn't going to look better in high heels!

POSSIBLE "PROJECT RUNWAY" SPOILER - DR JENNIFER THAT MEANS YOU!

I do have to wonder what kind of reaction "granola" would have had had "granola" been eliminated. From all accounts, it sounded like "granola" had hit rock bottom, and had nowhere else to go at this point. ??? Maybe the producer's were worried about the mental state of "granola".  At least "effortless chic" has friends, and his family - even if "effortless chic" thinks they might not be supportive after the results.

END OF POSSIBLE SPOILER

I was probably talking about the reputation of My Name Is Julia Ross - I honestly don't think I've ever seen the film - but even if I had, calling it a wonderful film was not calling it the best thing since white bread.  But, again, I don't think I've seen it because I have no memory of it - but it's reputation is really good - so, I should have been clearer in what I wrote.

In my CD/DVD player here at work is the (playable) DVD side of a DVD-Audio disc by Cheryl Bentyne of The Manhattan Transfer, who I will be seeing tonight in Seattle!  It's called Among Friends (http://www.amazon.com/Cheryl-Bentyne-Among-Friends/dp/B00009Y3L7/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1287776188&sr=8-1) and features BK's close and personal friend, Mr. Grant Geissman on guitar!

TOD:  The London revival of "Pajama Game" with Judy Kaye and Ron Raines.

"Steam Heat"  is a great song to listen  and dance to while driving in traffic, although I pity whoever is driving behind me.

That's no London revival, simply a studio cast recording based on the City Opera performances.

Back from the session. It was a very good day!

Here is an example of the rampant idiocy on these DVD/Blu-Ray sites - the following is posted about The Rocky Horror show blu-ray - he's raving about it, which is fine.  Read and see if you can pinpoint what is not fine:

Let me just conclude by saying The Rocky
Horror Picture Show is the perfect example of
Blu-ray done right.  You take a mediocre transfer
and you do everything you can to make it shine
both visually and sonically.

Okay, he loves the disc - great.  But "you take a mediocre transfer and you do everything..."  Does this fool think that Fox used a "mediocre transfer" to make the blu-ray?  A mediocre TRANSFER?  I'll tell you what Fox used - the ELEMENTS - the negative - that's why it looks good (if it looks good - I haven't seen it yet).  They don't use a TRANSFER to make a TRANSFER, mediocre or otherwise.  They MAKE a transfer from an element - that's pretty basic.  And who is posting this?  Oh, the guy who RUNS the Home Theatre Forum.  Not only is this guy a despot he knows nothing about blu-rays or anything.  This is a guy who admitted to never having seen a classic film before the advent of DVD.

Likely you are losing fat and replacing it with muscle. Muscle weighs more. So you are getting smaller and healthier but not lighter. Don't go by the actual weight on the scales.

I had a doctor's appointment this morning that had nothing to do with my injured foot. Since I was there anyway--and there's no way she wouldn't notice--I asked her opinion about my foot. "HOW'D you do that?" she asked.  Funnily, she told me that she's broken both of her feet, and one of them in the same place that I injured mine. She didn't think she'd broken it; it was only after a week, when it wasn't healing, that she had a X-ray and learned that she had a break. But hers swelled up immediately, whereas mine didn't swell or discolor until the following day. She told me to wrap my foot in an elastic bandage when I go for my daily walk/hobble, elevate it as much as possible, and if it isn't better by Monday to get an X-ray. (It WILL be better by Monday.)

I almost ordered PRETTY MAIDS ALL IN A ROW with Angie's signature, but then I remembered how terrible a movie it was.

Brenda Sykes, who plays one of the students, was a client back then.  She told me that Vadim insisted that all the actresses playing students be on the set every day, even if they were not scheduled to work.

I'm sure that rule wouldn't have been in effect if they were actors playing male students.

DR GINNY - DR MBARNUM is correct, at a certain point everything will even out before you start showing a weight loss again.....you are replacing fat with muscle, and muscle weighs more than fat......measuring in inches will help you know that you are still losing.

Ginny, people seldom want to share what I eat, either. To his credit, BK tasted some of my Indian food last weekend. He didn't like it, but he did taste it. As for the other things I eat, well, few are interested. But I feel a LOT better when I'm careful about my diet. It has its advantages.
