Well, you've read the notes, the notes were rather nice, and now it is time for you to post until the rather nice cows come home.

Sounds like the show was fun last night for MR BK - or the before the show was, anyway.  Gross oversight that not EVERYONE who appeared in the original tv show was NOT mentioned.....who was in charge of that, and did they KNOW three people were coming?

Today is a work day.

And then I am traveling 40 miles to my cousin's house to do readings for a list of people.....who knows how long that will take!

Whew.

We don't have any "real" delis in Salem, just places that call themselves delis but are really just sandwich shops whose main income comes from lottery gambling machines.

So...I would guess that the best deli I have been to is the one in NYC where I had the Beef Tongue (was it barbecued? I forget). It was good, whatever it was.

Good morning, all! I slept very late and I clearly needed the sleep. Yesterday we had a good - but short - session, which began with the very wonderful and very funny Rose Sullivan, who recorded three German lieder and did some fixes from her last session. Valerian Ruminski was running late, so we recorded the remainder of the piano solo "La coquette," which didn't go well on Monday morning because the hall was so chilly the pianist's hands were too cold to cooperate. Valerian arrived and we did his two Big Numbers. We had recorded five of his solos on Wednesday, but he wanted to hold the hge ones till today. Since our coloratura soprano is suffering from strep throat, she's off the schedule until November 7, so our day was over.

Today, I may have to make a run to the NYPL for some Herbert research as well as a look at Appalachian Mountain song collections. I want to be on top of this meeting tomorrow.

More coffee!

Well, I saw and said hey to Garry so he knew I was there, but who knows if he even remembers I did the show - he knows I did Laverne and Shirley, but Happy Days - I was so early in the run (seasons one and two) and maybe it wasn't mentioned to anyone.  It didn't bother me - whenever I see Anson or Donny or Henry they always remember like it was yesterday.  Tom Bosley was that way, too.

T.O.D.

Growing up in Tacoma, Washington in the 1950s meant that I had never seen an actual deli.  In the Seventies, we had the chain of Hoagy's Corner, which was basically 7-11 with sliced meat. I never knew what a real deli meant until I moved to New Jersey.

I have been to a lot of delis in new York, including the Carnegie Deli.  My favorite, just because I have eaten there the most is the Celebrity Delicatessen by the Milford Plaza.  I have yet to eat at Artie's, but I hope to some day.

The Celebrity Deli is now closed due to the gut renovation of the Milford Plaza. The entire hotel is closed and based on what's posted at the Web site it doesn't look like it will re-open anytime soon

I have no news.

I will comment, though, on Netflix. Their servers were down the other day, for most of the day, at least when I checked in. I received an email from them yesterday, apologizing for that and allowing their members to request a 2% refund from their next bill. 2% for me is less than a dollar, but I like the idea. I do use their streaming video and I could not that day. They were upfront about the inconvenience and provided some compensation. I'd like to see more of this sort of thing from Corporate America.

Well, I got up way too early today and judged the wine competition. They wanted us there by 8:15 and they had us out the door by 12:30. It was really well-organized and everything went quickly. I judged 48 wines, which is light for a competition -- and really welcome. Because they had so many judges, it meant that my nose didn't get tired. There was no palate fatigue, no great struggle to discern some subtle characteristic.

There was only one bad part: Almost every single wine was atrocious. Not just bad, but aggressively bad.

No review on Radio Wales.

Oh, well. I will listen next week. The day before Halloween!

That is so cool, Ben, that you are an International reviewer!
That is great news.

Ben has been doing Broadway reviews for BBC Radio Wales for several years.
I'll have to find that online and give it a listen.

But when I woke up I could still taste one of the dessert wines. It was brackish, looked sort of like prune juice, smelled like caramels mixed with kerosene, had a gritty texture and tasted like something had crawled into the tank and died.

Gee, I can't understand why they don't hire you as the official spokesperson.
Turned out to be a Port (!) and from a winery I generally like. The people who poured the wine said they were so mystified by its color/appearance that they opened another bottle and it looked exactly the same.

For about a year, after college, I was employed by a great deli: Aunt Fanny's Nosheria.  It's defunct, but, while it was around it was the best thing in town as far as deli was concerned.  I worked the line in the evenings - one of the few times I held an evening job other than theater- and it was always packed until closing time.  We had great pastrami, latkes and, my personal favorites of Reubens and Rachels.
Other than the food, my strongest memory of Aunt Fanny's was that it was there that I found out that Elvis Presley had died.  One of my co-workers, who had also directed me in my first onstage appearance at Pitt, brought me the news.

I've been downloading CDs into my iTunes so I can clear out some of these CDs by shipping them off to Miami University Library. I've got to get some dinner, take my meds, and settle down to watch some tv. Last night I watched LEAP YEAR with Amy Adams. I wanted to like it, but I didn't much care for it. I don't know what I'll be watching tonight.

I've eaten a delicious seafood salad and greens, pulled a ton of CDs, and I have the tv on in the background. I'm on Bravo and I keep wondering what language is that ugly supermodel Iman speaking? Half the time it sounds as if she's farting and the other half as  if she's waiting for her next sentence from the prompter.

We are back from a fun football day in Oxford, OH.  The game was ugly for Miami, not so much because their opponents were that great, but they must have brought their own officials with them.  A beautiful 82-yard Miami TD run was invalidated with a bad call and, at another point, Miami was penalized for roughing the kicker, who must be an acting major.

It was fun, though, to get in on the Football Families' pre-game tailgate and to be there for the homecoming hoopla.  We saw Lauren in action on the field and I'll post some pictures tomorrow.  After the game we went to Lauren's apartment for a soup & salad supper prepared by her Mom.

Hey, John G., here's a little background about BBC Radio Wales.

I listen to LOTS of BBC Radio via the Internet. One show in particular is Showtime on Radio Wales. It's hosted by Beverley Humphreys, a former opera singer. One day in 2003 when I was listening, the show opened with the overture from Gypsy. Bernadette Peters was doing Gypsy here in New York at the time. I sent an e-mail to Beverley just saying that I was about to see the show and how much I loved that overture. She was very excited to hear she had a listener in New York and wrote back asking if the producer could call me and get my thoughts on the show. I said of course. I saw the show on Thursday. That next Monday the producer called from Wales and I talked about Gypsy. That Wednesday Beverley played my clip on her show and that's how it started. I used to be on the air more frequently but it's slowed down recently. I had segments in June, July and September. I haven't been on since then but I just sent her reviews of Memphis and La Cage so I should be on sometime in the next few weeks.

Each segment is 90 seconds so it's hard to write a complete review but I do my best. It's taught me how to write concise pieces. I also record each segment and over the years I put together CDs of my segments so I have a copy of the work.

I also appeared on Beverley's show in 2005 when Anthony and I went to Dublin for Christmas. We took a side trip to Cardiff and I assumed I was just going to meet Beverley and we would have lunch or dinner but she asked me to be on the show. How could I refuse :) We talked for an hour and I was able to get a copy of the interview. It was quite special to appear on the BBC. I always thought I was born in the wrong era since I love radio and for the most part, radio in the U.S. is not much more than talk and bad music. There are exceptions but it's hard to find the kind of radio they do in England. That's why it's so special to do this for Beverley's show.

Anyway, that's the background and how it's been going on for the past 7 years.

When I saw Henry in Marietta last weekend, I wanted to talk to him and mention that I knew you (and maybe that Ron Howard is in our baseball film) but he was so mobbed by people that I didn't...

Then what are you doing indoors at 1:00 p.m in the afternoon, Bem?

Oh, I know!  Watching college football.

Yeah, right!

I just came in from a couple of errands. I got a haircut and I went to the post office to get a box to mail Christmas presents to my niece and nephew in Minnesota but the box is too small so I will have to go back out or go to a UPS store for another box.

The portions

I ate at the Carnegie Deli the last time I was in New York.

The food didn't make that much of an impression.

What did was how close the tables were together.

You couldn't talk to the person across from you without the guy at the next table butting in.

I love Ben's reviews on Radio Wales, and if anyone hasn't heard Beverly Humphries, they're in for a treat. She has the warmest, most inviting voice and make you feel like she is talking directly to you. It really makes you want to settle in and enjoy the show. She also answers emails and takes requests, and it's fun to hear her say your name on the air and comment on what you wrote. I still have several of her comments on my computer, courtesy of "Ben in NY"!

I went to the Carnegie during my first working trip to NY. It was my first meal after I arrived, and although the sandwiches were absurdly huge, it still struck me as very expensive. It was across the street form the hotel where I was living (The Wellington) and very convenient but I never went there again.

I have to say I'm not a fan of the Carnegie Deli. As has been said, the sandwiches are stupidly huge (OK I said that), they are stupidly expensive and I also find the service appalling! The waiters are rude and mean and not in a cute way. They are cranky, unpleasant people who shouldn't be waiting on the public. The either don't like their jobs and they take it out on the customers or they are so obnoxious that they couldn't get jobs anywhere else. Can you tell I have had bad waiters over the years? I've been to the Carnegie more than once (though I haven't been in years because of the lousy service) and each time the waiters were as unpleasant as many New York City bank tellers are rumored to be.

End of rant on the Carnegie Deli

I think I've lucked into a place to stay in NY. I had reservations at The Distrikt, which looked very nice and is certified bedbug free. It was cheaper than the Wellington or the Edison, but still $2300 for 2 rooms for 3 nights!

But it looks like we may be able to stay at my friend John's apartment, since he's been in Woodstock for months editing the new Bruce Beresford film. (He's the editor who has done the last 4 Merchant Ivory films.)
He has an apartment in the gigantic London Terrace in Chelsea. Oh dear...it's near Madeline's Patisserie with the amazing macarons. I ma have to introduce my mom and Naz, her better half, to these babies!

As for the Topic of the Day...

I remember planning a "Do all the typical NYC tourist things" trip a couple of years ago.  The first restaurant on my list was The Carnegie Deli.  Yes, I went into sticker shock when I browsed the menu, but since the sandwich was so big, I ended up with breakfast and a snack for the next day.  I think I lucked out with my waitress too.  Great service and she even told me not to order the pastrami that day, so I opted for the corned beef.

I also went there last year for lunch with a "regular" - who happened to be picking up the tab - and, again, we had great service.  Otherwise...

Katz's in NYC's Lower East Side is my favorite NY Deli.  The Pastrami-Corned Beef Combo can't be beat.  I've also tried "Montreal Smoked Meat" at Mile End in Brooklyn.  It's pretty good, although, not that consistent.

I also loved the original incarnation of the New York Deli in Richmond, VA.  They flew their bagels and bialys in from H&H, and their house-cured corned beef in an omelet was a great way to start a Saturday.

Every year they have a big gathering, and he does some sort of parody song to invite everyone to register. I thought some of you might like this. I think I enjoyed it more than the current show running on Broadway. Besides writing the lyrics and playing the instruments, Brian is also singing. Enjoy!

DR MBarnum - Since you were sitting next to me at the time...  The deli was Artie's Deli (http://www.arties.com/index.asp).  And you have the Tongue with Sweet and Sour Sauce.

Here's the article from Playbill (http://www.playbill.com/news/article/144213-Arena-Stage-Opens-Its-Doors-to-the-World-at-Oct-23-Homecoming-With-Alumni-Stars) about today's events.

In my own words... (see next post)

A very long day. Wae-Ling and I went on a butterfly walk at the arboretum. Then when I got home, a neighbor wanted to give his friend a tour of my yard to see the caterpillars. Then the butterfly scientist called and we went to a restricted area at the river with a plant biologist.

Did you see the game warden?

The last time I had worked at Arena Stage was back in 2006 when I worked on Cabaret and She Loves Me back-to-back. -My first show there was Sunday in the Park with George in 1997.  So, since I am/was an alumnus, I was invited to today's "Alumni Brunch"...

Lots of old friends.  Lots of hugs.  Some tears.  Smiles. Laughs.

There was so much HISTORY in that theater this morning!  There were actors and crew from the first five decades of Arena's existence in attendance!

All three of Arena Stage's Artistic Directors were also there: Zelda Fichlander, Doug Wager and Molly Smith.  All three of them spoke in "reverse" order with Molly starting off, then handing it off to Doug, with Zelda bringing the opening hour to a close.  They all shared some great stories, and basically gave an oral history of Arena.  When Zelda started listing some of the people who were not there today, well... All of us started crying.

*One of the things that Zelda said was that she hates the word "closure".  To paraphrase her, we should never bring the memory of a loved one to "closure", they should always be with us.  -And, yes, that was one of the moments I started to cry.

*One other quote from today that moved me was shared by Doug Wager, who was Arena's second Artistic Director - and it was something "Yoda-ish" that Zelda Fichlander said to him:

Maybe you can't pass the torch, maybe you can only pass the flame.

-Most definitely food for thought.

Here's a fun clip with Tony Curtis. He "got" Fellini better than most film critics.

Actually, the Good Stuff diner, where I've had several nice breakfasts with Elmore, Jose, Ben and Anthony is very near The Quad where our film will open on Nov. 5th. Peter and I will be at the early and late shows, so maybe we'll go there between. They have egg cream!

Of course, I also cried at my vet's retirement party. I'm easy.

My first cry of the day came when I went up to hug Susan White - a.k.a. "The Best Stage Manager In The World".  Sue was battling cancer a few years ago, and she came close to losing that battle.  Thankfully, she beat the Big C. As she hugged me, she whispered in my ear, "You are missed, and you are loved. And you should know that."  -I lost it.

Great stories, DR Jose. That sounds like a fun day.

It really was a great day!

First of all, I got down there early so that I could walk around and take pictures of the new building - which was essentially built over the existing buildings. Beautiful!  I did take some pictures, but I believe this PHOTO TOUR (http://www.arenastage.org/plan-your-visit/the-mead-center/photo-tour/) from Arena's site will give you a better idea.

After the brunch - which was quite good - and the speeches, the rest of the day was filled with various performances in each of the theatre spaces, as well as an outdoor stage.  I ended up attending Brad Oscar's mini-concert, as well as the "preview" of their upcoming production of Oklahoma!.  Brad did a great set of songs including a show-stopping "When Yuba Plays The Rhumba On His Tuba (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S5B2F1VYqbA)*, and he finished off with a nod to his Tony-nominated performance in The Producers by performing "Haben Sie Gehört Das Deutsche Band?".

Alas, I wasn't able to attend some of the other mini-concerts, but I did see the wonderful Kate Baldwin and her wonderful husband, Graham Rowat.  -Kate was my Nellie Forbush when I did South Pacific at Arena.  I also got to spend some time talking with the talented-and-handsome-as-ever Matt Bogart.  -DR elmore, be sure to keep an eye out for him and Jess and their son in your 'hood.  They finally moved in a few weeks ago.  -Oh, and he also shared some quite wonderful news of his own: there will be another little Bogart come next March! :)

*That's a clip of Rudy Vallee, not Brad.

Then since I was nearby, I decided to check out "Top Chef" Spike's new-ish place, We, The Pizza (http://www.wethepizza.com/).

I tried a slice of their special BBQ Pork Pizza, and a slice of their Roasted Potato and Pancetta Pizza, and their "Good Morning Vietnam Coffee" Soda.

ALL YUM!!

And then I headed back out to Virginia to join the rest of my family to celebrate the birthday of my brother, Mike.  His birthday is actually next weekend, Halloween, in fact, but since my youngest brother, Jay, is in town this weekend, my Mom wanted to go ahead and celebrate tonight since all four Simbulan boys were together.  -Basically, she wanted a "photo op" with her whole family. ;)

We ended up at Joe's Crab Shack. We ate. We used a lot of Wet-Naps. And we took a lot of pictures.  :)

I had a really really fun night at the Symphony tonight. It was a night at the movies and they added some banter between the conductor and our local film critic.  The banter was funny, entertaining and short.  It really added some spice to the evening.  They had a costume contest.  I did dress up in my black bead and sequins dress.  ( I discovered I didn't give it away after all).  I even wore strappy little sandles .  Eveyone had a character, so I just said I was a seat warmer for the Academy Awards.   I didn't win (didn't expect to) but I did get a laugh from the crowd watching the contest, so that was a good thing.

Anyway, it was really fun

I talked to a friend today who said I'm becoming a cat lady...as in crazy cat lady.   I don't think she intended it as a compliment, but my cats told me to take it that way ;)   seriously, I only have 3 cats in a big house.  I don't think that qualifies yet.

Dinner was faboo - Olivia (the daughter) made a chicken/pasta with pesto dish that was yummilicious - I ate way too much of it - a nice salad and for an appetizer, fried cheese with a slice of avocado on top.  After we looked at Olivia's latest paintings, we went to a nearby place called Dish - I had a slice of chocolate mousse pie.

Hi everyone - as usual, I'm alive.  Have been very E&T - but I'll try and catch up tomorrow.  The show is taking all of my energies at the moment, so much drama off stage that I could write a book.  But like Elmore, I'm saving it for the memoirs.  We had our orchestra read through today, and it was great.  Some holes in the orchestration that need fixing, but nothing worth losing sleep over.  They sound great and could follow my 5's and 7's without a problem.

more tomorrow...

So, I have been errant and truant for the last couple of days...with good reason!  Last night, my sister and I went to Seattle and attended the two different sets that The Manhattan Transfer performed at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley (http://www.jazzalley.com/)!  We left Olympia at about 4:15 and got there a little before 6:00 p.m.  The first set didn't start until 7:30, so we went to our seats at the bar and had a great view of the stage.  The stools weren't very comfortable, but they were worth the view.  The Manhattan Transfer have been together for almost 40 years and they've still got it.  They sounded wonderful...and I was paying attention. ;) The first set was about an hour and 20 minutes and the second set, which didn't start until 10:00 p.m., was about an hour and a half.
Title: Re: THE RATHER NICE DAY
Post by: George on October 23, 2010, 11:58:55 PM
After the first set, we were seated at a table much closer to the stage, but off to the side...and still a great view.  We had dinner just before the second show started.  For dinner, my sister had "Jumbo Wild Mushroom Ravioli tossed with sautéed shitake and oyster mushrooms in a rich Marsala sauce" and I had "Jazz Alley Ceasar Entree - hearts of romaine chilled and tossed in a traditional Caesar dressing with roasted croutons and grated Parmesan."  My sister really liked the ravioli, but my salad was just a Caesar salad.  It did, however, have a lot of chicken, so that was good.

Post by: George on October 23, 2010, 11:59:15 PM
The second show was just as good as the first.  There were only three or four songs shared between sets, so it's really like having a first act, dinner, then a second act.  This is the third time that I've seen them at Jazz Alley and if when they come back, I'll go again!

At least you know what's supposed to be good.  I drink the "good stuff" and it's still seems bad to me. :P

(FYI...I don't drink at all. ;))
