I have been to a lot of delis in new York, including the Carnegie Deli. My favorite, just because I have eaten there the most is the Celebrity Delicatessen by the Milford Plaza. I have yet to eat at Artie's, but I hope to some day.

The Celebrity Deli is now closed due to the gut renovation of the Milford Plaza. The entire hotel is closed and based on what's posted at the Web site it doesn't look like it will re-open anytime soon

Then what are you doing indoors at 1:00 p.m in the afternoon, Bem?

Oh, I know! Watching college football.

Yeah, right!
I just came in from a couple of errands. I got a haircut and I went to the post office to get a box to mail Christmas presents to my niece and nephew in Minnesota but the box is too small so I will have to go back out or go to a UPS store for another box.

Christmas presents?
And, TCB, I saw someone mailing Christmas presents a couple weeks ago.
DR TCB, I'm sorry to hear about your director friend and his cancer.
By the way, I've got the tentative reservation booked at Artie's for you.
I guess so.
I'm listening to Beverley Humhreys on BBC Radio Wales right now.
I might be on with a review of La Cage or Memphis. I never know but she sent me an e-mail this week saying that the received the CD with the reviews.
TOD:The only Jewish rye I have been able to find is at Central Market, but I think they call it something politically correct like Bavarian Sourdough Rye or something.
Canter's: Corned Beef on Rye.
;D
They don't have Jewish Rye Bread here in Austin.
:'(
And, I think that the only Jewish deli here must be run by goyim.
;)
This week we found out that the Artistic Director of one of our local theater companies has been diagnosed with Stage 4 Liver Cancer.Sorry to hear that. I have too many friends and acquaintances who are undergoing chemo and radiation treatment right now. I'm going to have brunch with one friend and his wife tomorrow, so it will be good to catch up with him.
It is amazing to see everyone rally around him.
Ahhh, bless you John G for posting.
No review on Radio Wales.
Oh, well. I will listen next week. The day before Halloween!
That is great news.No review on Radio Wales.

That is so cool, Ben, that you are an International reviewer!
But when I woke up I could still taste one of the dessert wines. It was brackish, looked sort of like prune juice, smelled like caramels mixed with kerosene, had a gritty texture and tasted like something had crawled into the tank and died.

Ben has been doing Broadway reviews for BBC Radio Wales for several years.
Turned out to be a Port (!) and from a winery I generally like. The people who poured the wine said they were so mystified by its color/appearance that they opened another bottle and it looked exactly the same. But when I woke up I could still taste one of the dessert wines. Gee, I can't understand why they don't hire you as the official spokesperson.
Well, I saw and said hey to Garry so he knew I was there, but who knows if he even remembers I did the show - he knows I did Laverne and Shirley, but Happy Days - I was so early in the run (seasons one and two) and maybe it wasn't mentioned to anyone. It didn't bother me - whenever I see Anson or Donny or Henry they always remember like it was yesterday. Tom Bosley was that way, too.

Christmas presents?
Amazing that we're in the same apartment and both on line doing different things.
We are excited about our Dear Amy's trip to NY for Jews and Baseball.
We will get to meet her mother!

Great story, Ben. And on top of that, i envy you Christmas in Dublin.

Welcome to my world...
Finished watching the Mexican film EL GATO CON BOTAS (PUSS N BOOTS) and am now trying to decide if I want to do a load of laundry.
Was it animated?
DR Edisaurus, it was a live action film...here is the trailer for the US dubbed version:
Some may find it quite bizarre.

I think the Carnegie Deli is a tourist trap. The real Jewish deli in New York was the 2nd Avenue Deli amd that is sadly no longer in business.
As for the Topic of the Day...I went to that New York Deli in Richmond. It was unexpectedly good.
I remember planning a "Do all the typical NYC tourist things" trip a couple of years ago. The first restaurant on my list was The Carnegie Deli. Yes, I went into sticker shock when I browsed the menu, but since the sandwich was so big, I ended up with breakfast and a snack for the next day. I think I lucked out with my waitress too. Great service and she even told me not to order the pastrami that day, so I opted for the corned beef.
I also went there last year for lunch with a "regular" - who happened to be picking up the tab - and, again, we had great service. Otherwise...
Katz's in NYC's Lower East Side is my favorite NY Deli. The Pastrami-Corned Beef Combo can't be beat. I've also tried "Montreal Smoked Meat" at Mile End in Brooklyn. It's pretty good, although, not that consistent.
I also loved the original incarnation of the New York Deli in Richmond, VA. They flew their bagels and bialys in from H&H, and their house-cured corned beef in an omelet was a great way to start a Saturday.
We don't have any "real" delis in Salem, just places that call themselves delis but are really just sandwich shops whose main income comes from lottery gambling machines.
So...I would guess that the best deli I have been to is the one in NYC where I had the Beef Tongue (was it barbecued? I forget). It was good, whatever it was.

"Send a bialy to your boy in the alley!"
Has anyone heard from Der Brucer?

Sadly, it's been turned into more a "generic" restaurant with full bar service now. However, there are two decent Jewish delis in the West End by the JCC.
A very long day. Wae-Ling and I went on a butterfly walk at the arboretum. Then when I got home, a neighbor wanted to give his friend a tour of my yard to see the caterpillars. Then the butterfly scientist called and we went to a restricted area at the river with a plant biologist.
I wish I had an egg cream right now. I think that Eisenberg's will be on my agenda.
Here's a fun clip with Tony Curtis. He "got" Fellini better than most film critics.

Oh, I'm crying just thinking about what that must have been like!
Of course, I also cried at my vet's retirement party. I'm easy.
Great stories, DR Jose. That sounds like a fun day.
LOVE the Uncle Jo Jo photo!
DR Jose, what a sweet, adorable photo..of both of you!
Well, I got up way too early today and judged the wine competition. They wanted us there by 8:15 and they had us out the door by 12:30. It was really well-organized and everything went quickly. I judged 48 wines, which is light for a competition -- and really welcome. Because they had so many judges, it meant that my nose didn't get tired. There was no palate fatigue, no great struggle to discern some subtle characteristic.
There was only one bad part: Almost every single wine was atrocious. Not just bad, but aggressively bad.
I'll have more to say about Olivia's paintings in the notes. But here's an example of one of my favorites:
