Title: PORTLAND STORIES
Post by: bk on November 13, 2010, 12:12:54 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were live from Portland and had stories, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently having electrolysis and will be home soon thereafter.

And now, as promised, the new Kritzerland release, which I'm posting here a day earlier than usual to give everyone a good head start on it.  You know the routine - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (23.73) via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

IF YOU’VE GOT A TASTE FOR TERROR… TAKE CARRIE TO THE PROM

Kritzerland is proud to present a very special and historic 2 CD limited edition soundtrack release – for the first time ever, the complete score to:

Carrie
Music Composed and Conducted by Pino Donaggio

In 1976, director Brian De Palma had already established a reputation as a cult director of such films as Greetings, Hi, Mom, and more importantly, Sisters, Phantom of the Paradise, and Obsession.   But it was his film of Stephen King’s classic, best-selling first novel, Carrie, that would catapult him into major director status.  Many directors have tackled Stephen King, including King himself, all to varying degrees of success, but Carrie is the film that leads the pack.

De Palma got everything right – the casting (an amazing group of actors, including Sissy Spacek, Piper Laurie, Amy Irving, William Katt, John Travolta, Nancy Allen, P.J. Soles, and Betty Buckley), the adaptation by Lawrence D. Cohen, the art direction (Jack Fisk and Bill Kenney), camerawork (Mario Tosi), editing (Paul Hirsch) – everything just came together magically and perfectly.  The film works so well because there is not only great horror (as to be expected), but also a large helping of emotion and pathos (thanks to Sissy Spacek’s affecting and brilliant performance as Carrie).  There is a depth to the characterizations that elevate the film way beyond a simple scary movie.  The film also has a sly sense of humor and it’s just fun in a way horror films seldom are – thrills, chills, laughs, and one of the most amazing jump-out-of-your seat scares in the history of cinema.

Horror films are rarely nominated for Academy Awards, but Carrie was one of the exceptions with Sissy Spacek getting a Best Actress nod and Piper Laurie getting one for Best Supporting Actress.   Over the years, the film has never lost on iota of its popularity, thanks to numerous releases on every home video format, most recently on blu-ray.

Of all the decisions De Palma made, one of the most important was choosing Pino Donaggio as composer.  De Palma had used Bernard Herrmann on two of his films – Sisters and Obsession, but Herrmann had passed away in 1975.  In 1976, Donaggio only had one major film to his credit, but his score to that film was masterful – Nicholas Roeg’s Don’t Look Now.  However De Palma came to choose Donaggio, it was a perfect marriage of composer and film.  Donaggio’s score hits all the right notes – he brings out every emotion and all the subtext, with great suspense and horror music, plaintive and yearning music for the character of Carrie, two songs for the prom sequence (with lyrics by Merritt Malloy) that help make that sequence so magical and memorable, and light and infectious music for the calisthenics sequence and the scene at the tux shop.  It is, in fact, a perfect score, a masterpiece of film scoring, with unforgettable themes that capture every nuance of the film.

United Artists released the soundtrack album on LP.  It was an odd presentation in that almost all of the music was from the film’s second half, save for the main title sequence (which was repeated verbatim at the end of the album).  The album ran thirty-five minutes.  That LP was released twice on CD – first by Ryko (with dialogue snippets included to pad out the running time), and then by Varese Sarabande (with the dialogue snippets gone).  Ryko used the album master, and the Varese was a clone of the Ryko release (the pop songs used in the film were not available to them or to us).

For this very special release, we are pleased to say that our detective work paid off in spades – we found 13 reels of the original four-track session masters and they included the entire score, about twenty-five minutes of never-before-released score cues.  Since both film and score are iconic, it was the greatest kind of discovery we could have made.  This is a completely different mix than the original album, as groups of instruments were put on separate tracks to give the film mixers options for balance.  We’ve created a stereo mix from the four tracks, and the fidelity on the tapes was really incredible.

So, it is with great pleasure that we offer for the first time the complete score to Carrie in film order. We also found two instrumentals of the songs, which we’ve included as bonus tracks.  Additionally, on CD 2 we offer the original album sequence and mix, newly remastered for this release.

This release is limited to 1200 copies only.  The price of this special 2 CD set is our usual one CD price – $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the third week of December – however, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Good morning, al! I slept late, until around 8:15, and I am showered, dressed and ready for my second cup of coffee. At 2 I have a meeting about this Appalachian Christmas project, so I'll spend the morning typing lyrics to Victor Herbert songs for the recording's print work.

Beyond that, I have next to no plans. When I return from the meeting, I may watch a DVD, perhaps LET THE RIGHT ONE IN, since the topic is scary movies today.

Last night's gathering looks like fun. I was surprised, though, there were no ham chunks next to the pineapple in one of the photos.

CARRIE ordered.

Scattered in there are lots of birthdays among friends and extended family and the 10th wedding anniversary of our niece Rev. Amy and her DH Ken.

And 7 weeks from today it will be 2011 - but who's counting?

The Oaf was up at 6am, tromping about with quite a lot of endless shuffling. Then, around 10am, he was dropping heavy objects onto the floor. It could be trunks or cartons, if he's really beginning to pack up things, but I still think it's cases of drugs and lethal weapons.

I'm up, I'm up... And it looks like someone tried to break in to our building last night.  The glass on the security door is broken, and there are shards of glass in the foyer. -And since there was an "incident" two nights ago just two blocks from here, well... :-\

I left my apartment yesterday some time around 12:15pm.  Due to various appointments and detours, I did not get back to my apartment until 12:15am. And by that time, I was feeling a bit run, so I went right to bed... And eight and a half hours later...  -Which probably explains why I slept through the glass being broken. ???

Jane looks even younger and prettier than when I met her.

Jane also deserves a Tony nomination for Best Actress.  I knew she was going to Portland, but  she had me convinced from her posts that she wasn't going.

Had a fun morning and early afternoon.  JMK and I went to Powell's and some music store, while Betsy and Jane went to meet a friend of Jane's at Nordstrom.   I made a little purchase at Powell's and JMK made a little purchase at the music store.  We all convened there and had some tea.  I bought a couple of really nice sweaters - the kind I haven't been able to find in LA, so that's nice.

I went shopping today. They were having a big sale event at Coldwater Creek (my favorite store).  There was a jacket I really liked the last time I was in there, but decided not to spend the money.  Today I got it for just about half price!  I got another jacket that wasn't on sale and 2 turtleneck sweaters that were also on sale just about as much off.  I smiled a lot about that.   Then it was off to Sam's club to look at tvs for my new room.  I also got a few things I had been thinking about when I was at Sams in SF with mom.   I got her a couple presents too.  She is a self professed Snickers-aholic so I got her a plastic container with 90 mini bars in it!

I'm having fun watching the cats today.  They all three follow me wherever I go. Ricky is just cruising for a bruising everywhere he goes.  He taunts them and they smack him, then he dances past them.  He is SOOO like a jr. high school boy teasing his sisters.  It really makes me laugh

I've shaved.  Next stop: Shower, but not for an hour - I always leave an hour before I shower.  I was thinking of wearing one of my new sweaters this very evening but then I'd have to go back to the store and buy a shirt.  They had one Armani shirt that I absolutely loved, but it was three hundred dollars or something like that, which I found more than a little nutty.

I wonder how many Halloween smarties make one real chocolate bar. I was going to ask anyone if they knew how many smarties there were in a regular size packet. But then I just realized that nobody here probably even knows what smarties are.  Which is very weird to me because it is one of the most popular chocolates in Canada. It's basically like M+Ms, except all different colors and not as round. I love these.

The little Halloween packs have 10-11 in each one. So I figure if I eat 3 or4 it must be similar to a regular size box. :)

Vibes of safety and comfort to DR JOSE! My impression was that they didn't actually succeed in getting inside. Is that right?

DR Jeanne - I hope not. It looks like they might have broken the glass in order to reach inside and open the door. ??? However, the landlord checked with everyone in the building, and no one reported anything suspicious last night. Frankly, I think it might have been one of the teenage kids of the tenant on the fourth floor.  They tend to really "like" their weekends, if you get my drift.

I spent the evening watching the Swedsh film Let The Right One In, which I enjoyed, but not so much as the book. The film is stylish and elegant with jabs of violence and blood, but it also omitted completely one of the book's sequences involving a major character's becoming a vampire and the situation's relationship to a police detective investigating the murders. In fact, the police detective is completely missing from the film.

Still, the cast is excellent and I found it interesting putting people and places into th context of what I'd read.

I had the greatest time at Comic Con today.

I sold more books in one day than I have ever sold anywhere.

And, not just the memoir.  I had 5 different titles with me and sold 2 of them out completely.

I am a very happy camper.

 :)
Glad to learn that since I stood you up.

We had a large and appreciative audience for BK, many laughs were had, and BK sold a lot of books.  :)

Jane and I have returned, as Jane has an early flight and I am still sick as a dog from this friggin' cold.  BK, Mike and George are continuing the party with various and sundried others.

They are having a One Creek event today. 35% off your total order.  And there were a lot of mark downs.  I was amazed at how much I saved.  Man, I LOVE a sale!! :D

I love that store, too. Maybe I should get some Do-Mi-Do duds for our LA opening next week!

Oh Ginny!  I'd love to go to a Coldwater outlet store

Well, it's about halfway between here and Columbus.  In fact, I just had to discard a blazer that I bought there 10 years ago on my way to a library conference.  I remember when it was because I'd sit in my hotel room and watch the 2000 election fiasco unfold during lunch breaks and in the evenings.

Ginny, if you feel the urge to drive to Columbus tomorrow, you can see JEWS AND BASEBALL!

We have Smarties here in the states, but they're different; more like a roll of little Sweet Tarts:

Back from the event and the pre and post dinners.  I had planned to eat very lightly at the pre dinner, so I had a BLTA, fries (small amount) but then had to try their peanut butter pie, which was yummilicious.  But this place had so many things that I love and I'm afraid at the post show dinner I ate an obscene amount of food and I shan't eat anything over 1000 calories for the next week so I can get rid of this.  I had biscuits and gravy (2), two eggs, hashed brown potatoes loaded with sour cream and cheese, and bacon.

The event could not have gone better.  We had a really nice crowd.  JMK was a perfect moderator - we started out by showing the acting clip reel and boy did that go over well - lots o' laughs and really fun.  Then they introduced me.  It was very relaxed - the first thing out of my mouth was "It's really hard to follow yourself forty years later."  There were lots o' stories, a lot of nice, big laughs, and the Opening Numbers song went as good as it's ever gone.  What a wonderful audience we had.  The second clip reel just went on way too long (I'd been told two ten-minute clip reels, which is exactly what I delivered) - the acting one was fine, but the writing/directing one was five minutes too long.  But the best thing about the second clip reel was that it began with three scenes from The Creature Wasn't Nice, and the laughs were so huge - it was really gratifying, especially I Want To Eat Your Face.  We could have stopped right there.  We never had time for the second song or questions, which was too bad, but we were just having way too much fun.

After, I sold a lot of books, which was also fun.  In fact, I wished I'd brought the Kritzer books, too, as we would have done well with them.  All in all, a perfect evening.
