Title: TEARING MY HAIR OUT
Post by: bk on November 17, 2010, 11:58:01 PM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes spoke of hair and frustration, not necessarily in that order, and now it is time for you to post until the frustrated and hairless cows come home.

The event gave out goodie bags; we got Jewish baseball cards (as seen in the film with the guy who makes them) and baseballs with our logo. The players all signed my ball! Mike Lieberthal has exquisite handwriting and was so funny---he should be a commentator! He and Shawn Green spent a while afterwards talking about their golf games, LOL!

Good morning, all! Another day of the McGlinnventory and then my schedule changes. My editing plans have fallen through so I'm off to the NYPL on the continual scrapbook search and I want to look at a few folksong collections.

I received a sad email from my neighbor Judy, who keeps an eye on the apartment when I'm away. The adorable boxer who barks too much in the apartment above me is dying from cancer. I doubt that's the reason the Oaf is moving, but I'm wondering if his unhappness and anger over the dog's situation isn't being directed at me.  This answers a few questions I've been formulating, like why I haven't heard him walking the dog or why I haven't heard the excited clatter of paws and claws on the floor. I'm not sorry the Oaf is leaving but I am really sorry that beautiful and friendly boxer is suffering.

DR Ginny, I've been pondering your fashion dilemma and I think that the easiest solution to your pants problem, until you have lost a little more weight, is to buy a red clown nose. It will be cheaper than clothes and suitable for any occasion.

Thursday morning greetings!  I woke up at 6am and could not go back to sleep, so I've been reading and trying to be quiet enough to allow the rest of the household to sleep in.  I have a haircut scheduled for later this morning and a gathering of my book group this evening.

DR JohnG - Ear things always take a while to clear up. In the meantime, just be careful when blowing your nose - you don't want to literally blow the infection up into your sinus cavities. (Ewww.)  Otherwise...

A friend of mine was part of the private audience for Tommy Tune's final run-thru of this new show. From all accounts, you're gonna have a great time.

I believe that may be Pamela Bellwood, stepmom to my niece's roommate at Reed.  Y'all helped me get Lucy's Dad Peter Bellwood soundboard recordings from GANTRY, his "musical."  ;)  Evidently Peter is also responsible for the HIGHLANDER films.  Since he got his start with Dudley Moore, I am assuming we simply didn't get that they were an hilarious joke.  :)

Wow - where's everybody been?  I'm back from my appointment, where Tina cut and styled my hair and waxed above my upper and below my lower lips.  That's something I used to have done every other month, but had not since I began taking all this medication that causes me to bruise.  Just removing the cardiac monitor patches has caused bruising and I really didn't want similar wounds on my face.  I got brave today and took the risk and so far, so good...

So, as it says in today's title, I've literally been "tearing my hair out."

You gals were talking about cuddleduds last night as if it was a common thing. I wonder if it is either a) an American company that doesn't sell here or b) something that was more popular in the past.

I truly had no idea what you guys were talking about. They sort of look like slinky longjohns! :)

DR Jennifer, they are very thin but very warm long johns.  They make shirts, camisoles all sorts of "under" wear.  I wear them all winter.

Hmmm, I bet something like that would be good to wear while biking.  I'm probably finished for the year since the weather has gotten much colder.  But when I went on Tuesday I had on 3 layers. And even though the bottom 2 layers of shirts are not thick I still must have looked like
a big round biker with so many layers on.

DR Cillaliz:  Thanks for getting at what I wanted to say, too -- about the butterfly.

As soon as DR Laura told us about the one wing that didn't unfold, Billy Preston's "Will It Go Round in Circles" popped into my head.

LOL!

Still...I wasn't certain the butterfly survived.  I guess it would have gone round in a circle had it not been for that willow tree!

I am happy to report that The Monarch Scientist looked at The Tiny Monarch and felt she would be able to fly. So we put her on a flower to nectar for a while, and then she flew a little wobbly into the willow tree. She said she's seen butterflies with much worse wings fly.

It's not that it didn't unfold at all -- the edge was a little curved.

Still not thrilled with the ear, but it's much better today. And that's good as the agenda is full of meetings and things ending up with a chance to see Tommy Tune tonight. A friend called with a spare ticket, which I was happy to accept.

The last time I saw him was on the last night of the brief life of "Busker Alley" when he was in a cast and two other performers, including Jeff Calhoun, did his dance numbers for him. I had seen the show the previous week and they did a great deal of good work on it, though it wasn't good enough for New York.

I'm pleased to say that Ricky's surgery went very well and the doctor reported that he is resting comfortably.   He wasn't pleased to be locked in my room last night and took quite a while to calm down.  Once he did, he cuddled up under the covers and slept for over 6 hours.   I'll pick him up at 5:00 tonight.  He'll be sleeping all day, so he'll be fine there.
Yeah on the surgery.

BK, is there a market for CDs of recordings like the "It's a Wonderful Life" that you mentioned? Or would getting the rights to a special benefit performance like that be too cost-prohibitive? I know I'd like to hear it based on what you've recorded so far, even if the show is imperfect, as you said.

DR Matthew - How was MTT and the San Francisco Symphony last night?

A-may-zing!   Elza was fantastic.  The four songs were lovely.  It was my first introduction to Richard Stauss, and it was a good one.

We had awesome seats, Orchestra Row D on the side, very nice.  I don't get to the symphony enough.  That needs to change.

I didn't get to the gift shop, but my friend and I did consume a bottle of wine - 1/2 before the concert and 1/2 during intermission.  It was a magical evening.

While Elza and "The Four Last Songs" weren't riveting enough, the second half was Strauss' "Ein Heldenleben", which was so good that it held my attention the entire time.  We were a stone's throw away from the concertmaster who played the violin solo - who was also amazing - so full of colors and images.

It used to be a parlor game amongst my college music friends to follow along on any of Strauss' gigantic orchestral scores (Heldenleben being a personal favorite), not get lost (no easy task), and then quiz each other about various aspects of the score.  Yes, we were total and absolute geeks.

Another little hiccup with Carrie, just a time-consuming hiccup because my tape transfer guy didn't provide the files already in a pro-tools session, therefore the engineer has to take the time to get them into pro-tools.  So, I won't be going over there to hear mixes today - not till Tuesday, I'm afraid.  However, he will get stuff mixed today and tonight and he'll put those on his iDisk and I'll be able to hear them.

You want to see a perfect example of how incredibly stupid people on these DVD and Blu-Ray forums are, I print this post:

"The video hiccup happens around 1:50:36 during an insert shot of a bird flying in the sky overhead.

Since Mr. Gallagher states that the hiccup is also on the previously released DVD version, this leads me to believe that whatever master Sony/Columbia has of the film has the flaw in it and that the hiccup is not an encoding error. I do not know if this hiccup is present in the original theatrical prints (I've never seen the film projected from a theatrical print, but I can only assume the prints lacked this obvious error), but I suspect that the error has somehow been formed along the way in finding source material for home video and transferring it. Unfortunately, either Sony/Columbia hasn't noticed this problem or is too lazy to fix it.

Too bad they didn't choose new source material, one without the error, for the transfer. It is annoying that such a great film has been restored so nicely and released on an awesome home video format with an obvious, startling error.

Other than the video hiccup, the blu-ray is excellent. In fact, the audio and video quality of the blu-ray is so good that it makes the video hiccup at 1:50:36 that much more disappointing.

I plan on contacting Sony/Colombia's Home Video Department to try and get information about the video hiccup and why it wasn't fixed/removed.

If anyone else has insight into this issue, I'd appreciate you posting it in this thread."

Note the accusatory tone, the use of "too lazy" "why it wasn't fixed/removed" and "obvious and startling error" -

Now, the obvious and startling "error" is a jump cut that lasts about an eighth of a second.  It has always been in the film and was done by Mr. Lean and his editor.  Someone finally pointed this out, but not before this oaf had actually written Sony asking for an answer.  Obviously this gentleman has no compunction about looking like a total twit.  I mean, if you see the jump cut and your curious, there are many ways to ask about it that aren't offensive and accusatory, especially if you're too ignorant to know about film.  And when given the correct answer, he thanked the person, but got in one last comment about not having heard back from Sony - as if they had time to deal with every dweeb who writes them an inane accusatory e-mail.

I just got off the phone with my mom.  She told me that the other night my brother went to get into bed and when he pulled back the covers, he discovered that their cat, Wicked, had killed a bird and buried it in their bed, lol.   That actually sounds like something one of the dogs would do, but just imagining going to crawl into bed and discovering that....well it made me laugh pretty hard.

Yuck!  That is what he gets for letting his cat outside. ;D

LOL<> that's what I said

:D

Cillaliz, I always pick up the kittens at 2 p.m. So no doubt Ricky had been out of anesthesia for quite some time by the time you pick him up at 5 p.m.

That time I took Joshie for some emergency surgery, he was still out when they brought him to me. It was closing time and they wanted to go home. The office gal let me sit and wait while she finished up some paperwork and kept an eye on him while he came out of it.

Well, I don't know when they did the surgery.  He was still pretty out of it.  Awake, but out of it. He wandered around for awhile, then he managed to get to the top of his roost and he's been sleeping there ever since. I'm glad he's resting

Yes, and I'm very glad.  They gave me this really cool pain medicine.  It's a gel I put on his ear and it goes into his system that way.  I'm supposed to give it to him once tomorrow and once on Saturday.  If I don't wear a glove I get the dose of pain medicine...hmmmm

Maybe the pain medicine is why he's out of it, lol

stopping by quick to say hello....

Today I delivered a letter to the university president with the help of lawyer concerning the abuse and denial of ada accomodations at the library. The lawyer is not happy with the university so we will see what happens
Vibes for all the best with regards to an ugly situation.

That might help with my ear infection.

Back from a very nice dinner.  I'm feeling a bit better now, so that's good.  Food always helps, I think.  We split some wings, and then I had a chopped Eyetalian salad - turkey, garbanzos, onions, and lettuce.

Tommy Tune was fun and the show was good, but it kinda lagged toward the end when he left the autobiography and went off into a Gershwin medley that just didn't work with the rest of the evening. It was good to hear him sing "I'm Leaving Texas" from "Whorehouse Goes Public." And he started with "Hey There, Good Times." He did a few other Cy Coleman songs that were nice ("Baby, Dream Your Dream" and "Seesaw" among them). But I kept wishing he were playing some character rather than himself for two hours. Next to nothing on "Grand Hotel," a particular favorite of mine, and the original "Whorehouse." No "Busker Alley" for obvious reasons. No "Birdie." No "Will Rogers Follies." But he did "The Uncle Sam Rag." Go figure.
