Good morning, all!  Last night I dreamed of London; I was staying at Kim Criswell's, although she was not in the dream, and we were there because of an event concerning the late John McGlinn. Most of what I remember of the dream was a farewell party before I headed back to the States and we were waiting for Judy Kaye to show up. And she did, just as the alarm went off.

This morning I have to go to the McGliinventory office, install Finale 2011 on the new computer, have a meeting with paralegal Geri, and then head over to Toyland where I have an editing session with Mr Skip Kennon at 1pm. Following that, I will head back here for another round of tax tallies; I'm down to the Big 3: DVD, CD, Books/printed music. Last night I finished up promotional gifts, dinners, and purchases. I cannot believe I am so far ahead of the meeting with my accountant; I'm usually doing all of this one to two days before the meetingi. I'd like to think it's experience and maturity, but I really think it's luck.

DR TCB, I know who the singer David Adam Moore is,  but I do not know him. My friend Patrick Carfizzi is also performing in that production of BARBER OF SEVILLE in Seattle. Here's a visual aid for DR MBarnum.

Larry, do these dreams really happen as you say, or are they a little embellished for dramatic effect?  :)

I am not making any of this up. There are periods when i don't remember my dreams at all, but I am relating everything I can remember as faithfully as possible. The dreams have been very colorful lately and I remember portions of them vividly.  There was one peculiar dream I had last night that I remember little of now: I was on a bus and it was the 104 route down Broadway, but the passengers - whom I no longer remember - were insisting we were in Ipswych or Islington, somewhere in or around London.

And another peculiar thing going on: I think the neighbor above me is a vampire. I would swear that around 2 am he or she was moving things into the apartment but they have a very light tread, compared to the Oaf's stomping about. At any rate. there was someone moving lightly about the apartment above me in the middle of the night; I heard the squeaky door opening and closing.  I even got up to see if there were a moving van or truck outside.

Last night I watched THE HEART IS A LONELY HUNTER on TCM.  I remember I first saw the movie when I was about 12 years old on NBC Monday Night At The Movies and I was deeply disturbed by the ending.  It still comes across as a shocker.

I also DVR'ed THE BALLAD OF THE SAD CAFE, which I don't believe I've ever seen...

Watching a movie like that just reinforces how mediocre MANY of the films that escape to theaters now seem to be - although certainly not EVERYTHING released then was worth much anyway....PRUDENCE AND THE PILL?

The Encore freebie movie channels have been running BROADCAST NEWS for the past month.  I caught it over the holidays and enjoyed it just as much as I did back in the 80s.  I remember that I copped William Hurt's Cupid's bow gesture and used it many a time.

I think I would enjoy seeing PRUDENCE AND THE PILL again over watching tripe like this past weekend's box office champ.

Well I have only seen a couple of the films - some of them I am not interested in either because of what they are about or who stars in them......but I did like BLACK SWAN.

TRUE GRIT was better than I thought it would be.

THE KING'S SPEECH was interesting - although I really didn't like the guy who played Winston Churchill, nothing there.  I don't want an imitation, but SOMETHING of the man would have been nice.

I liked Guy Pearce and Eva Best as Edward & Wallis......but depictions of the lives of useless Royals can be tough sledding as well.

No interest in THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT, THE SOCIAL NETWORK, THE RABBIT HOLE or THE FIGHTER among others.

Well PRUDENCE did have Deborah Kerr and Dame Edith Evans -

DR ELMORE - your dream indicates that the closing of the McGlinn chore will be cause for celebration, although not ALL of those associated with him seem to agree. You seem to think that some people are not forthcoming with information or items.

The bus to Ipswich is connected with the film VILLAGE OF THE DAMNED which you must have seen at sometime - and you feel at times that all of those around you have been taken over by aliens.

No big surprises with the Oscar noms.  Some people are upset that Andrew Garfield  and Christopher Nolen were snubbed.  A lot of noms thrown to THE KING'S SPEECH which I think was my favorite film last year.

Are there normally only four song nominees?

TOD: I think Paul Giamatti was probably overlooked, since he won the Golden Globe and the reviews for his movie, "Barney's Version," have been wonderful. But the Oscar has overlooked him several times in the past, most notably for "American Splendor."

I haven't seen enough of the other movies, but I would like to see "The King's Speech" and "Black Swan."

There are usually five. I remember one recent year when three songs from "Enchanted" were nominated and all lost. To what, I couldn't tell you. Sadly, the award has little relevance any more. And how much relevance do the Oscars have when many of the movies are out on DVD by the time the awards roll around?

"Hurt Locker" was on DVD six months before the awards. "Social Network" is out already.

Mom had surgery this morning to repair a hernia. She's home, and the doctor told Dad it went well, but she's in a tremendous amount of pain and I'm sure she won't take a pain pill until the pain gets unbearable, which means waiting that much longer before the pill begins to work.

I've mentioned this before but we no longer have cable. We get over the air broadcast channels. On January 1st of this year a new channel began broadcasting called Antenna TV. It's a mix of old movies, the 3 Stooges, Benny Hill and old TV shows like Father Knows Best, Hazel, The Nanny, Three's Company, Maude, All in the Family, Good Times and the Partridge Family. They generally run the shows in series order and today they broadcast Bruce's episode where he played Marvin, the editor of the school newspaper. It was fun to see but Antenna TV has destroyed the show (not just Partridge Family but all the shows) by making cuts to fit in even more commercials. Bruce was a major plot point in this episode but they cut out EVERYTHING until near the end of the show when he comes to see Shirley to explain about having Laurie's diary. The whole Miss Dill Pickle Thing in the beginning was cut so it makes no sense that Marvin doesn't "like" Laurie because we didn't see anything! They did keep Bruce sitting at a table during the song when David Cassidy walks into the audience and sings to Bruce. I'm sure the other episodes are cut up as well. Oh, well. You looked good Bruce and you sounded so young! You were as skinny as Laurie  ;D

I spent quite a bit of time today looking for the two books about my father, which the French journalist needs, and of course they seemed to be the only two books missing from the new house.  Finally went out into the garage and discovered one last box I hadn't unpacked and lo and behold, and also behold and lo, they were in there.

Jane, tell Keith the French genealogist is having the same issues finding out anything about Jacob and Hyman.  ;)

Vibes to JohnG and Elmore.

JohnG, I think Ralph's Fourth would also suit your mood, at least the first movement.

Elmore, have you seen this great (IMHO) production of ELEKTRA from Baden Baden with Linda Watson?
That was yesterday's listening. I have this wonderful collection of Leonard Slatkin conducting all of his symphonies and a few extras. Good set.

T.O.D.

I believe I know sixteen or seventeen of the actors nominated for Oscars.  And if I don't know every film nominated is it really the Academy's fault; or is it my own fault?  Like most things in life, the Oscars, and the movie industry itself, is very cyclical.  There have been many periods over the past 50 years or so in Hollywood; where I have found myself puzzling over the question, "Who nominated this crap?"

But even during those periods when I have felt out of touch with the industry, I have always continued to watch the Oscars.  To me, they are one of the few remaining glimmers of the Hollywood that used to be.  So, I will continue to shake my head when Rob Lowe dances with Snow White or when The Theme from SHAFT wins Best Song of the year; but I will still be glued to my TV set every year.

I have not, but ELEKTRA is not an opera I'm dying to watch in various productions. Endless hogcalling, and not nearly so much fun as SALOME. The old film verson with Leonie Rysanek is the only video I have of the piece. I will check it out, though, since you like it.

Today's second semi-rhetorical question:  Why do some people try to insert their need for control when it's completely misplaced?

Case in point:  the church I work for has approximately 20 handicapped parking spaces.  Due to my chronic pain issues, I was "assigned" one by a door, despite my not having a tag, that requires a key to get in, i.e., no "visitors" would use that space anyway.  This is a private parking lot and we are able to do what we wish with all spots.  I got outside today and there was an irate lady boxing in my car.  She had a large yellow looseleaf pad and was on the SECOND page of a handwritten rant she was going to leave on my car.  She became very aggressive.  I pointed to the approximately 15 other handicapped spaces (all vacant) within view, all of which were by the only door she could have gotten into without a key.  I also explained we were a private parking lot and I was an employee with permission to park in this spot.  She was having none of it.  I went back in and spoke with our ever calm Executive Director who told me not to worry about it.

Mom had surgery this morning to repair a hernia. She's home, and the doctor told Dad it went well, but she's in a tremendous amount of pain and I'm sure she won't take a pain pill until the pain gets unbearable, which means waiting that much longer before the pill begins to work.

Your poor mother.  Tell her reducing the pain to begin with reduces the length of time the pain lasts.

You can soften the sugar in a microwave.  I suggest breaking it up first and also putting a small cup filled with water in the microwave, to help make it moist, when you heat it up.

Rehearsals are done.  Poor birthday girl Juliana has a bad flu - she showed up and we ran through her stuff and she's homeward bound for more rest.  Our MD, who is doing one of these for the first time, didn't quite get what was expected so the rehearsal was a bit rough, but he knows now and Friday he will be faboo.  Everyone is going to be wonderful, but twelve-year-old Melody Hollis is so much fun doing the nonsense words medley - she brought me brownies - she made them and their were absolutely yummilicious.

I am going to write more, but I think I'll watch the Broadcast News special features first - not sure if I'll eat anything else, but maybe a little pasta with butter might be fun.

Richard and I went on an errand today that I thought would never happen - we went to pick up Rob's restored car from the body shop!  Of course, it needs some kind of official inspection before it can be driven, so it will sit in the garage until the *first* available appointment - a week from tomorrow.  That means that it will have been 3 full months that I've been without my own car - assuming Rob's passes the inspection...

What? I do hope they're not charging you a "garage-ing" fee. You would think that they would want to free up the space. ???

The car is sitting in OUR garage, DR Jose.  Which means that the 2 drivable cars are parked on the street - hope it doesn't snow tonight, or for the next week - HA!

If you aren't permitted to drive it how did you get it home?

Richard was told by the State Highway Patrol that he was permitted to drive it from the body shop to our home and from our home to the inspection place.  This has been a whole process that we'd have been just as happy never to have to learn!

I've never heard of all this inspection stuff before you can drive.  Is this Ohio law?

DR Cillaliz - it has something to do with the fact that the car was considered "totaled" for insurance purposes and had to be retitled as a salvage.  I think the inspection is to verify that it was not rebuilt with stolen parts.  Or to make the state some extra money...

The reading of "The Absolutely True Adventures Of A Hollywood Assistant" is over. It went very well and had a very receptive audience. I was very grateful to have had a chance to do it in front of an audience. People laughed where they were supposed to, laughed where I didn't think they would (A good thing) and didn't laugh where I thought they would. And now onto getting a full production of the play.

More to come, but I'm tired and have to work tomorrow.

George how is Margo's toe?

Much better, thank you.  The doctor totally rebandaged it and took off the half-splint and gave her a Velcro-shoe-thing to wear, so walking (with crutches) is much easier...she's still in pain, but she can get around.  Four to six weeks of recovery. :P

After I dropped Margo off at home, I went to my parents' house for dinner.  My mom made meatloaf and it was pretty good.  I brought home the leftovers. :)
