Good morning, all! Last night's remembered dream was a murder mystery, but there were also in it a seedy motel, an amusement park, and a lot of college kids. I can't put the thig together now, but it was clear as day when I awoke around 5:30.

Congrats on a successful performance, BK! I hope there were some DRs there and that they will post about it.

Today is my visit with my accountant to complete my 2010 tax returns. Oy! Because of the McGlinnventory and the Herbert recording, I made almost twice what I made the year before. I'm hoping I have plenty of deductions to bring the taxable income down, but I believe I will end up paying out more money than I'd like. It's good to know early how much I might owe so I can begin saving the funds.

It's 21 degrees outside right now. And the weatherman is saying that it's cold enough to snow, maybe 1-3 inches tonight. I really hope it doesn't, because these people would have no idea how to drive in it. And I don't know that I remember much how to anymore.

We had a dusting of snow last night, DR John G, but that just freshened things up and will provide some traction on the ice.  Now we're dealing with some after effects of the storm - a downed cable TV wire in our back yard (which doesn't seem to have interrupted our service...) and brown water (which usually indicates a water main break somewhere nearby).

I stepped out of my bank this morning, hit a patchg of ice, flew up into the air and landed on my back between my shoulder blades. My hat flew one way, my glasses another. The wonderful ladies coming in opposite directions ran to my assistance. One helped me up while the other retrieved my glasses and cap. Right now I'm very sore but happy there was no further damage.

Greetings from Toyland!

It sounds as if the Gardenia show was a BIG HIT!!!  Congrats to MR BK and his cast and crew! Doesn't anybody ever take any PICTURES?

Probably on somebody's blog somewhere.

Actually, quite a few pics were taken that night of BK, the cast, and Mr. Sherman after the show.  I'd brought a camera but was engaged in conversation at that time, so wasn't able to take any pictures myself.

It was an amazing evening of bonhomie.  As Bruce said, just hearing those Sherman Brothers songs makes you feel good -- you just can't help yourself.  And the songs are not kiddie songs, as some might believe.  When you hear the full canon of what they've written, there is astounding depth and sophistication to them.

This was one of the few times I'd seen The Gardenia with a full dinner crowd.  The place is usually half full (or less) for dinner and then the crowds come in for the show and pay the cover and 2-drink minimum.  Well last night, The Gardenia was packed to the gills for dinner.  Everyone was warm and friendly.  Mr. Sherman made a point of going to each table and greeting the diners.  He is such a warm and gracious man.

I was engaged in a long conversation with his son Greg about the documentary he and his cousin made about their fathers.  I'd seen the documentary and it's a wonderful tribute to the talents of two men who are living legends.  Greg himself was very kind (he takes after his father in that respect) and when his friend Jeff Marx (who co-created Avenue Q) at the table, Greg enthusiastically introduced Jeff to me and my wife.  Jeff was also kind and gracious, and we talked a little bit about Avenue Q and his current project (a musical based on the comedy movie Airplane!).   Greg also introduced me to his father, and I actually got to talk to him for maybe 10 minutes, during which I tried very hard not to be overawed that I was conversing with a living legend whose work I'd admired almost from the time I was aware that songwriters existed.

I don't think there's much I can say about the show that Bruce hasn't already said.  My wife and I thought Alet had never sounded better.  We'd only seen her at the Kritzerland shows and a benefit a few years ago, but each time we hear her, she brings new dimensions to her song interpretations.  Since each performer gets to do only a few numbers in each show, we know we'll be learning new things about her capabilities for a long time to come.

And we've loved Juliana from the start, when we heard her introduce "The Happy Working Song" to the world at the Alex Theatre for Bruce's benefit for the LACCTAA a few years ago.  We thought she was the quintessential Disney princess type then, but every time we've seen her since, she's shown us so much depth and subtlety in her singing that we've long since dropped the notion of seeing her as "just" a Disney princess type.

All of the other singers were new to me and the wife but they were wonderful, as Bruce stated.  We're looking forward to seeing them in future shows and learning what else they can do, as we've seen with Alet and Juliana.  I think my wife has a little crush on David.

Bruce was, of course, great.  I always feel a touch guilty about him when I go to when of the Kritzerland shows.  I feel like I should go to his table and pay my respects and I always hesitate because he's always so engaged with the people at his table.  So I figure on saying hello to him later on.  But he invariably beats me to the punch and comes to my table first, to greet me and the wife.  Bruce is not only the prime force behind these shows, but he's also the reason the crowd is always so genial.  Everyone feels comfortable, welcome and happy at these shows, and I think Bruce is the prime reason for that.  I have say though, that Mr. Sherman himself kicked it up another notch last night.

My wife and I have been lucky enough to attend 3 of the 6 Kritzerland shows so far.  We feel so privileged to be able to be part of them, if only as spectators.  We know they're (thus far) one night only.  A show comes, it's done, and then it's gone.  Our lives are richer for having seen them.

Does anyone know a good way to get the smell off a new comforter?

The weird thing is that it barely smells. But for some reason it is making my eyes water. I washed it.  Now I have it outside in a bag.

I really want to use it. And it really does barely smell. I don't know maybe i should wash it again with more detergent?

I also have to call Joshie, who called during my tax meeting.

Did he find an apartment?

Still looking. He's got another month, at least, I think.

Did you see the email I sent you through facebook?

Thanks to DR VINTEK for the Gardenia Report

Ditto - sure would like to attend one of these shows!

You're both very welcome.  My wife and I wish we could attend more of them ourselves.  We've been able to attend exactly half (3/6) of the shows. They're a wonderful entertainment bargain ($15 cover + $20 2-drink minimum).  Unfortunately the shows don't start until 9PM and since I have to be in the office at 630AM the next day (after a 45 minute commute),  The shows are great for the spirit but tough on the body the next day.

We're hoping to continue to attend at least half of the shows, more if we feel up to it.  And if Bruce allows it, I'll try to get some pics after the show to share with you all.  I usually bail right after the show so I can get home to bed, but I'll try to get some pics to share with all of you the next time out.

I would have loved to have seen the show last night. I'm a big fan of the Sherman Brothers, especially Richard and his wonderful wife. I had dinner with them when we were starting the Mercer project out in LA and he was such a sweetheart and funny guy. He even signed my copy of THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE soundtrack! I love this guy.

Regarding Nicky's interest in the neighbor (which is not quite the same as my interest in the neighbor):

Nicky doesn't like people food
Nicky doesn't seem interested in food smells
Nicky does not like shrimp
I don't think the neighbor is dead, because both he and his girlfriend would have to be dead; and if so, who keeps driving their two cars?

My guess is that they may have gotten a cat.

I just saw the strangest thing out in the parking lot behind my apartment.  Parked in front of the other building is an SUV.  Someone (the driver or ?) has placed a large crucifix under the driver's side windshield wiper. The crucifix is about a foot long and has a three dimensional Christ figure that looks to be made of silver.  Jesus is facing the driver's seat.

I have no idea who or why that was done?

I've been spending a lot of time in the mountains lately with my dad and his very large Great Pyrenese, so I understand more now how much force a big dog can wield!

Don't let the dog knock you down or pull you.  Be sure to hold the lease when you walk him/her (photos?) and not loop it through your wrist.  It is important you can let know if needed.  Sitting down quickly is a good way to keep a dog from pulling you.  Unfortunately with my shoulder injury I can't do that anymore.

Back from a very long day to find no power. 1000 homes in Studio City are sans power. A tree fell on some wires about two hours ago. Brilliant. Estimated time of restoring power, two in the morning, although it could be sooner. I'll probably go somewhere with wifi to post notes a little later. I just hope the computer and modem and router can all reset themselves without a problem.

Hey everyone.  Nothing to say, really - just "hey".  The Wedding Singer is going well, fun to play, and the kids are doing a great job.  Everything else is cruising along.  That's all from the East Bay.

"Wallstreet: Money Never Sleeps" arrived from NetFlix today.  I told Keith to watch it while I'm out meeting Mark Salzman.  I wonder if he will also be promoting a new book.  I hope so.

I have no idea, TCB. I wondered if maybe someone was committing suicide or something. Is it strange that is my first thought?

I would be interested in knowing what Keith thinks about the film.  I had zero interest in seeing it.

Thank You for all of the Travel Vibes. They really did seem to help today. My bus ride from 125th Street to LGA did take a bit longer than usual due to all the residual snow still blocking some lanes. However, once I got to the airport, it took me just under three minutes to get from the curb, through security and to my gate. My flight was relatively uneventful - I just wish the gentleman sitting next to me had taken a shower or two before boarding the plane. Thankfully, it was not a full flight, and there was seat between us.

The hotel is nice - we're at a new place this year - and I already got my fix of Gus's World Famous Hot and Spict Fried Chicken. There is also a high school band convention at this hotel this weekend, and I'm just hoping that all of the participants have good chaperones who enforce the curfews.

It is cold here in Memphis, and they're expecting some snow tonight. Hopefully we won't wake up to a surprise four inches of snow covering the roads like we did last year.

BK, about how much would it cost someone to have dinner and the show at the Gardenia?  A two drink minimum would be a waste on me (HOW much for Club Soda?); but I have always wanted to go to a supper club.

DR TCB - I've been to a couple of places with a two-drink minimum and cokes and soda waters are counted as "drinks".  Of course, they charge you $5-8 for a Coke, so...

You can pull some of them up on his BLOG (http://sethrudetsky.com/blog/index.php). Just click on "Deconstruction" in the right hand column.  You can also just search for "Seth Rudetsky Deconstructing" on YouTube.

My favorite is his comparison of Patti LuPone's Evita v. Madonna's Evita. ;)

Today, I went to a local (Tacoma...only about 35 miles away) conference for users of the computer system that our library has.  It was interesting, but not very useful for me.  They mostly talked about circulation stuff and technical/computer services issues, but nothing about acquisitions, which is what I do.  I acquire.  But like I said, it was interesting.  The drive up and back was quite uneventful.  We had no trouble on the freeway and got a parking space right behind their courier entrance, so we only had to walk across an alley to get in the building.  That was very convenient.  I was able to (legitimately) put on my time sheet that I worked 10 hours.  So, I get to leave work early tomorrow!  That'll be different. ;)
