Congrats, BK. It sounds like it was a lovely night.

It's 21 degrees outside right now. And the weatherman is saying that it's cold enough to snow, maybe 1-3 inches tonight. I really hope it doesn't, because these people would have no idea how to drive in it. And I don't know that I remember much how to anymore.

And the word of the day is: ECLAT!
And The Song Of The Day Is: APPLAUSE

We had a dusting of snow last night, DR John G, but that just freshened things up and will provide some traction on the ice. Now we're dealing with some after effects of the storm - a downed cable TV wire in our back yard (which doesn't seem to have interrupted our service...) and brown water (which usually indicates a water main break somewhere nearby).

I stepped out of my bank this morning, hit a patchg of ice, flew up into the air and landed on my back between my shoulder blades. My hat flew one way, my glasses another. The wonderful ladies coming in opposite directions ran to my assistance. One helped me up while the other retrieved my glasses and cap. Right now I'm very sore but happy there was no further damage.
Greetings from Toyland!

Thank you all for the good wishes! Outside of the painb in my shoulders from the fall, I feel great. My taxes are finished, and I owe the IRS around $900 and the state around $600. It could have been much worse; last year was my biggest income in some time.
I'm having a snack before Mr Skip Kennon arrives. I also have to call Joshie, who called during my tax meeting.

It sounds as if the Gardenia show was a BIG HIT!!! Congrats to MR BK and his cast and crew! Doesn't anybody ever take any PICTURES?
Probably on somebody's blog somewhere.
Actually, quite a few pics were taken that night of BK, the cast, and Mr. Sherman after the show. I'd brought a camera but was engaged in conversation at that time, so wasn't able to take any pictures myself.
It was an amazing evening of bonhomie. As Bruce said, just hearing those Sherman Brothers songs makes you feel good -- you just can't help yourself. And the songs are not kiddie songs, as some might believe. When you hear the full canon of what they've written, there is astounding depth and sophistication to them.
This was one of the few times I'd seen The Gardenia with a full dinner crowd. The place is usually half full (or less) for dinner and then the crowds come in for the show and pay the cover and 2-drink minimum. Well last night, The Gardenia was packed to the gills for dinner. Everyone was warm and friendly. Mr. Sherman made a point of going to each table and greeting the diners. He is such a warm and gracious man.
I was engaged in a long conversation with his son Greg about the documentary he and his cousin made about their fathers. I'd seen the documentary and it's a wonderful tribute to the talents of two men who are living legends. Greg himself was very kind (he takes after his father in that respect) and when his friend Jeff Marx (who co-created Avenue Q) at the table, Greg enthusiastically introduced Jeff to me and my wife. Jeff was also kind and gracious, and we talked a little bit about Avenue Q and his current project (a musical based on the comedy movie Airplane!). Greg also introduced me to his father, and I actually got to talk to him for maybe 10 minutes, during which I tried very hard not to be overawed that I was conversing with a living legend whose work I'd admired almost from the time I was aware that songwriters existed.
I don't think there's much I can say about the show that Bruce hasn't already said. My wife and I thought Alet had never sounded better. We'd only seen her at the Kritzerland shows and a benefit a few years ago, but each time we hear her, she brings new dimensions to her song interpretations. Since each performer gets to do only a few numbers in each show, we know we'll be learning new things about her capabilities for a long time to come.
And we've loved Juliana from the start, when we heard her introduce "The Happy Working Song" to the world at the Alex Theatre for Bruce's benefit for the LACCTAA a few years ago. We thought she was the quintessential Disney princess type then, but every time we've seen her since, she's shown us so much depth and subtlety in her singing that we've long since dropped the notion of seeing her as "just" a Disney princess type.
All of the other singers were new to me and the wife but they were wonderful, as Bruce stated. We're looking forward to seeing them in future shows and learning what else they can do, as we've seen with Alet and Juliana. I think my wife has a little crush on David.
Bruce was, of course, great. I always feel a touch guilty about him when I go to when of the Kritzerland shows. I feel like I should go to his table and pay my respects and I always hesitate because he's always so engaged with the people at his table. So I figure on saying hello to him later on. But he invariably beats me to the punch and comes to my table first, to greet me and the wife. Bruce is not only the prime force behind these shows, but he's also the reason the crowd is always so genial. Everyone feels comfortable, welcome and happy at these shows, and I think Bruce is the prime reason for that. I have say though, that Mr. Sherman himself kicked it up another notch last night.
My wife and I have been lucky enough to attend 3 of the 6 Kritzerland shows so far. We feel so privileged to be able to be part of them, if only as spectators. We know they're (thus far) one night only. A show comes, it's done, and then it's gone. Our lives are richer for having seen them.

Does anyone know a good way to get the smell off a new comforter?
The weird thing is that it barely smells. But for some reason it is making my eyes water. I washed it. Now I have it outside in a bag.
I really want to use it. And it really does barely smell. I don't know maybe i should wash it again with more detergent?
-
Wow DR Elmore. Hope your pain goes away. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
DR Elmore, you need to get some shoes with traction! Be careful out there!!
-
DR Laura's cat called DR Elmore during his tax meeting?
Wasn't my Joshie. He's been curled up in his basket asleep all morning.

Or rubbing against my ankles begging for canned food.

I also have to call Joshie, who called during my tax meeting.
Did he find an apartment?
Still looking. He's got another month, at least, I think.

DR VinTek, thanks for the report on the Gardenia event. I agree about the Sherman Brothers documentary. It's quite wonderful.

Did you see the email I sent you through facebook?
-
Thanks to DR VINTEK for the Gardenia Report
Ditto - sure would like to attend one of these shows!
You're both very welcome. My wife and I wish we could attend more of them ourselves. We've been able to attend exactly half (3/6) of the shows. They're a wonderful entertainment bargain ($15 cover + $20 2-drink minimum). Unfortunately the shows don't start until 9PM and since I have to be in the office at 630AM the next day (after a 45 minute commute), The shows are great for the spirit but tough on the body the next day.
We're hoping to continue to attend at least half of the shows, more if we feel up to it. And if Bruce allows it, I'll try to get some pics after the show to share with you all. I usually bail right after the show so I can get home to bed, but I'll try to get some pics to share with all of you the next time out.

A Most Merry and Happy Birthday to DR Edisaurus!

I would have loved to have seen the show last night. I'm a big fan of the Sherman Brothers, especially Richard and his wonderful wife. I had dinner with them when we were starting the Mercer project out in LA and he was such a sweetheart and funny guy. He even signed my copy of THE HAPPIEST MILLIONAIRE soundtrack! I love this guy.

Happy, happy day, Amy!

Well, the most interesting thing today is that my DH thinks he saw a chupacabra in our yard, and took a picture of it, but it may actually have been a coyote with mange.

Regarding Nicky's interest in the neighbor (which is not quite the same as my interest in the neighbor):
Nicky doesn't like people food
Nicky doesn't seem interested in food smells
Nicky does not like shrimp
I don't think the neighbor is dead, because both he and his girlfriend would have to be dead; and if so, who keeps driving their two cars?
My guess is that they may have gotten a cat.
-
DR Edisaurus, what a wonderful photo of you and Mr. Sherman!!

As for td's comment last night, I thought that was so sweet. Unless we happen to be in a horror film, in which case it is the last thing the victim says to his murderer just before he dies.

BK, about how much would it cost someone to have dinner and the show at the Gardenia? A two drink minimum would be a waste on me (HOW much for Club Soda?); but I have always wanted to go to a supper club.
-
I just saw the strangest thing out in the parking lot behind my apartment. Parked in front of the other building is an SUV. Someone (the driver or ?) has placed a large crucifix under the driver's side windshield wiper. The crucifix is about a foot long and has a three dimensional Christ figure that looks to be made of silver. Jesus is facing the driver's seat.
I have no idea who or why that was done?
-
Any ideas?

Any ideas?
Who am I asking? I am the only one here.

I have no idea, TCB.

LOL! No, he learned that in Scouts, but now he's learning how to put them out in firefighter training.

DR Edi,
Thank you, Jane! That is delightful!
I've been spending a lot of time in the mountains lately with my dad and his very large Great Pyrenese, so I understand more now how much force a big dog can wield!
Don't let the dog knock you down or pull you. Be sure to hold the lease when you walk him/her (photos?) and not loop it through your wrist. It is important you can let know if needed. Sitting down quickly is a good way to keep a dog from pulling you. Unfortunately with my shoulder injury I can't do that anymore.

Back from a very long day to find no power. 1000 homes in Studio City are sans power. A tree fell on some wires about two hours ago. Brilliant. Estimated time of restoring power, two in the morning, although it could be sooner. I'll probably go somewhere with wifi to post notes a little later. I just hope the computer and modem and router can all reset themselves without a problem.
-
Bruce at least it isn't cold there and you have water. Vibes your food stays fresh in the frig/freezer. Don't open them ;)

I'm glad you are feeling better now, DR Ron Pulliam.

So, DR Ginny, how do you and Richard feel about driving to Wooster this summer to see the Ohio Light Opera prevent present my Cole Porter show JUBILEE?
As long as it's not July 11-17, we'll be there!
-
I was abed the first three days this week...sick as a dog and not checking in! Better now. At work!

Nobody.

Hey everyone. Nothing to say, really - just "hey". The Wedding Singer is going well, fun to play, and the kids are doing a great job. Everything else is cruising along. That's all from the East Bay.
-
Well, I have no idea what that might mean.
-
I was wondering if it could be a priest's version of a Handicap Placard. I mean, "Don't tow me away, this is God's business."

I have never seen anything like it. The crucifix looked expensive.

"Wallstreet: Money Never Sleeps" arrived from NetFlix today. I told Keith to watch it while I'm out meeting Mark Salzman. I wonder if he will also be promoting a new book. I hope so.
-
I have no idea, TCB. I wondered if maybe someone was committing suicide or something. Is it strange that is my first thought?

Good grief, maybe I should go back out there and look around.

I would be interested in knowing what Keith thinks about the film. I had zero interest in seeing it.
-
Well, now that it is dark outside, it would be creepy for you to go peeking in the window.

Did you enjoy th efreedom of having your own caR AGAIN?
-
About twenty minutes after my last post I had had it trying to get my phone to connect to the Internet so I was ready to go to the Studio Cafe for the Internet - just as I was about to walk out the door, the electricity came on and thankfully it's been on ever since.
-
Yes, DR Vixmom, Rob and I both are glad to have our own cars back. My day today was kind of shot by the water main drama, but tomorrow I have a lot of errands to do.
-
Did you have any damage to your home due tothebreak?
-
Happy to hear that BK is once again electrified , connected and enlightened!
-

Good Evening!
Greeting from Memphis!
-
DR elmore - I hope you wake up tomorrow not in pain. In the meantime, it's best to take Advil if you're going to have a vodka and tonic. Tylenol and alcohol are not good for the liver.
-
DR vintek - Thanks for your Gardenia Report.
-
Thank You for all of the Travel Vibes. They really did seem to help today. My bus ride from 125th Street to LGA did take a bit longer than usual due to all the residual snow still blocking some lanes. However, once I got to the airport, it took me just under three minutes to get from the curb, through security and to my gate. My flight was relatively uneventful - I just wish the gentleman sitting next to me had taken a shower or two before boarding the plane. Thankfully, it was not a full flight, and there was seat between us.
The hotel is nice - we're at a new place this year - and I already got my fix of Gus's World Famous Hot and Spict Fried Chicken. There is also a high school band convention at this hotel this weekend, and I'm just hoping that all of the participants have good chaperones who enforce the curfews.
It is cold here in Memphis, and they're expecting some snow tonight. Hopefully we won't wake up to a surprise four inches of snow covering the roads like we did last year.
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY EDISAURUS!!!!

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
-
Even if the chaperones enforce the curfews, it won't stop the kids from swinging from one balcony to another.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha!
Well...
Apparently, this is some sort of gathering of the "Elite of the Elite" high school band members in the region... And they have their first session at 8:00am... So... We shall see...
-
Big thanks to vintek for his nice words.
-
I was wondering if it could be a priest's version of a Handicap Placard. I mean, "Don't tow me away, this is God's business."
Perhaps the SUV is possessed
-
So, DR Ginny, how do you and Richard feel about driving to Wooster this summer to see the Ohio Light Opera prevent present my Cole Porter show JUBILEE?
OH! And I know a couple of singers who will be returning to OLO this summer. I shall have to ask them which operas and roles they'll be singing.

DR Ginny - I hope things in your 'hood are fixed. Or, at the very least, not that broken.
-
Really enjoyed Seth Rudetsky and his Deconstructing Broadway show tonight. We laughed and laughed and laughed. What a fun way to spend a cold winter night

Well...
It's a very "Band Geek-y" group of kids. They're all talking about which reeds they use, what their favorite mouthpieces, solo and ensemble repertoire, etc...
Just as long as they're not running in my hallway at 2:00am... That's all that matters.
-

Did he include "Turkey Lurkey Time"? No matter how many times I see him deconstruct that clip - either live or on YouTube - it and he still makes me laugh.
-
BK, about how much would it cost someone to have dinner and the show at the Gardenia? A two drink minimum would be a waste on me (HOW much for Club Soda?); but I have always wanted to go to a supper club.
DR TCB - I've been to a couple of places with a two-drink minimum and cokes and soda waters are counted as "drinks". Of course, they charge you $5-8 for a Coke, so...

Or Cher singing all the parts in "West Side Story"?

No he didn't do that one. He did a lot of other funny stuff though. Seeing Cher's Westside Story where she plays all the parts was ...oh my
-
LOL, John G. I posted before I read yours. He showed the Brady Bunch Variety hour..lol
-
Watching "Groundhog Day" a day late. I needed something funny tonight and this is it.
-
LOL, John G. I posted before I read yours. He showed the Brady Bunch Variety hour..lol
Another great one.

Are these on Youtube?
-
Cher does all the parts in Westside Story

-
Seth is so animated, I can't remember half of what he did. There was one Streisand bit where she mispronounced the end of a word that had the audience doubled over.
-
Are these on Youtube?
You can pull some of them up on his BLOG (http://sethrudetsky.com/blog/index.php). Just click on "Deconstruction" in the right hand column. You can also just search for "Seth Rudetsky Deconstructing" on YouTube.
My favorite is his comparison of Patti LuPone's Evita v. Madonna's Evita. ;)
OH! And that great clip of Liza Minelli NOT blinking.
-
What in the world?? ?? ??
-
OH!
DR Laura - Wait till you see the carpets in the hotel. It's like Christmas in my hallway! ;D
-
What in the world?? ?? ??
Guess you watched the Cher clip, eh?
-
And now...
It's been a long day, and I have an early morning ahead of me - as well as 200 auditions to play...
Goodnight.
-
Jose, that Evita comparison is really funny, too.
-
OH!
DR Laura - Wait till you see the carpets in the hotel. It's like Christmas in my hallway! ;D
Oh! Oh! Oh! I can't wait!!!!!
-
What in the world?? ?? ??
Guess you watched the Cher clip, eh?
LOL!
-
I, too, need to turn in. I don't want to wait up for midnight to see if it snows.
-
OH!
And I also love how he deconstructs Barbra Streisand's constantly lowering keys for the song "People".
-
I logged into youtube to do a search for that, and I discovered that my video of the Indianapolis Airport has 801 views. Who searches for stuff like that?
-
I, too, need to turn in. I don't want to wait up for midnight to see if it snows.
It will be there in the morning. I think. Won't it?
-
Yes. It will be there in the morning. Ugh.
-
See, now I would wait up to see snow. But that's because the last time it snowed here was about 20 years ago.
-
I got a kick out of Seth deconstructing Barbra Streisand changing words. Like mute to mule and...I can't even remember the other one. He's just so nonstop it's hard to remember everything he did. But, it's really funny
-
Finished watching a motion picture on Blu and Ray. I'm truly tired and may write the notes early.
-
;D A SUPER HAPPY BIRTHDAY ;D
(from a very truant and errant person who has missed the last few days) (and last few birthdays)
-
It's been busy at work, and I am truly tired and must say goodnight.
Goodnight everyone.
The weekend is almost here. :)
-
Very glad bk's show was another success. Sorry I had to miss it. :'(
-
Mega vibes for everyone. ;) ;) ;) ;)
-
Before it's too late...A Very Happy Birthday to DR Edisaurus!! ;D
-
Congrats to BK and the Cast of the latest Gardenia show!! :D
-
I think I'll give the head's up for our next releases this very evening.
-
Today, I went to a local (Tacoma...only about 35 miles away) conference for users of the computer system that our library has. It was interesting, but not very useful for me. They mostly talked about circulation stuff and technical/computer services issues, but nothing about acquisitions, which is what I do. I acquire. But like I said, it was interesting. The drive up and back was quite uneventful. We had no trouble on the freeway and got a parking space right behind their courier entrance, so we only had to walk across an alley to get in the building. That was very convenient. I was able to (legitimately) put on my time sheet that I worked 10 hours. So, I get to leave work early tomorrow! That'll be different. ;)
-
I think I'll give the head's up for our next releases this very evening.
Cool!
-
Today in my mail, I received a package from Amazon.co.uk. A Region 2, PAL DVD of the new series, "Sherlock," from BBC. The least expensive on Amazon.com right now goes for $16.89 and including shipping, I paid $13.67 (that's £8.28) from England!
-
I remember when Futurama was still on, the first three seasons were available on DVD in England and in the US, only the first season was available for purchase! What's that all about??
-
I can't remember how or when I first found out about the idea of region code-free DVD players, but I remember that BK had recommended a website and I bought a player from that site. I still have it and it still works great!
-
Well, since we're so close...
