Topic of the Day:  I don't actually know a lot of Kurt Weill songs, I mainly know of his shows.  Anyway, here are most of my favorite songs that he's written:

I'm a Stranger Here Myself
It Never Was You
Lost in the Stars
Mack the Knife
The Saga of Jenny
Speak Low
Surabaya Johnny
Tchaikovsky

Good morning, all! DR TCB, thank you for saving yesterday's number of posts. It was an Olympian feat and you were in the right neck of the woods to accomplish that,

Last night's weird dream was about army shows to boost morale and I was in charge; I had a staff including Howard McGillin (no, Fred, I am not making this up!) and most of the dream was about looking for comedy writers.

Today, back to Toyland for more edits with Mr Kennon. I look forward to it.

In 1983, I worked on a fantastic concert of ONE TOUCH OF VENUS for the New Amsterdam Theatre Co,, produced by the late wonderful Bill Tynes. Paula Laurence, who played the comedy lead role of Molly, played the role again, and she was very funny ("If anyone needs me, I'll be down at the corner having my tongue torn out."). Paige O'Hara, whose then-husband had an option on the show for a revival, was a Venus much like Mary Martin, Leroy Reams was the barber and object of her affection Rodney Hatch, Ron Raines was the art collector Savory Whitelaw, Susan Lucci was the bitchy fiancee and Peggy Cass was her mother. It was quite good and very very funny. Encores! did it several years later with Melissa Errico as Venus, but I don't fnd the rest of the cast nearly as good. There's been a complete recordng of the show with Errico under construction from John Yap for around ten years now, and I dount it will ever be released.

John McGlinn did a complete performance with Paige O'Hara and Kim Criswell as Molly for the BBC radio series of complete musicals and I have the whole performance on CD if anyone would like a copy.

TOD:
I wish the Metropolitan Opera broadcast of THE RISE AND FALL OF THE CITY OF MAHAGONNY with Teresa Stratas would be released on single DVD (it's in a $200+ set of Levine performances); Weill's score is amazing, with two of my favorite songs "Havanna Song" and "Alabama Song."
"Mandalay Song," "Surabaya Johnny" from HAPPY END
"J'attends un navire" and "Le roi d/Aquitaine" from MARIE GALANTE.
"One Life To Live" from LADY IN THE DARK, although the three complete dream sequences are fantastic mini-operas
"Ballad of the Robbers" and "It Never Was You" from KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY; I cannot wait for the new recording!
We still need a complete recording of the unexpurgated Marc Blitzstein version of THREEPENNY OPERA.

A major Kurt Weill disaster was the day EMI pulled the plug on the John McGlinn recording of a complete LOVE LIFE, which was cast and set to go. In EMI's defense, dealing with McGlinn must have been horrible, no matter how many diva conductors were on their roster.

Since time immemorial music publishers have found lots of methods to ring up sales on their composers' music. This album is a plethora of the dance band arrangements made from Weill's scores from the 1920s through the early 1950s. Weill died in 1950. It's a lot of fun.

Hello, all! Sorry I've been so E&T lately; I have a job that's sucking all my energy but it will be over with soon. And our Jews and Baseball premiere is tonight at The Fox Theatre, a 5,000 seat movie palace, so it's been taking a lot of energy using all my skills to get as many people and as much publicity as possible.

Now I'm very tired!

Weill's ballet THE SEVEN DEADLY SINS OF THE MIDDLE CLASS gets its only English recording with Marianne Faithfull, whose voice is a bit ragged these days and she uses the transpositions made for Lenya in the 1950s, but it's a great score and she finishes the recording with a group of Weill songs.

In songs, I love the two Stratas albums, who's an amazing performer. I much prefer her to the over-rated Ute Lemper, whose ego shines through everything she sings - I suspect it's a form of Brechtian alienation and she sure alienated me! - and I find her steely invulnerability hard to take. I do admire Lemper's fluency with German, English and French but I listen to her grudgingly.

TOD: September Song, Ballad of Mack the Knife, and Van Dyke Park's contributions to the LOST IN THE STARS CD that Hal Willner produced.

We just interviewed Hal last week for our new film. I wish I could have been there for that, but he did autograph a copy of his Disney tribute: STAY AWAKE, one of my favorite albums ever.

I'm glad to learn more about Kurt Weill; I listened to THREEPENNY OPERA a lot on college and haven't heard much else!

I have no idea what do-mi-do duds to wear to this, but the reception looks pretty cool; celebrity chefs presenting dishes with wine pairings. I should definitely wear something dark!

The reception tickets are $250 apiece  so needless to say, none of MY friends will be there. The producer, director and I each got a pair of tickets. I insisted that the owner of the post house get a pair, too, but couldn't get them for my asst. editor, online editor or sound mixer. So it feels sort of elitist and I don't even know if they're roping off a special VIP section for these people or what, since they'll be up there at the live auction when most people are finding seats. I think I'll skip my chance to win a trip to NY for Regis and Kelly and find my peeps downstairs!

I did win tickets for the reception at a silent auction last year, so I am able to at least take my mom and Naz. $50 for both---I thought that was a deal!

In Stratas' defense, since I saw RAGS, she should have thrown the chair at Strouse: the score was fantastic at moments, but the second act was a mess, and that mighty cast worked their butts off. A friend of mine in the show said that after the original director was fired in Boston, Strouse and Schwartz wasted time doing little (how about fixing a few bad lyrics or the second act?). By the time Gene Saks(?) was hired, there was little time for fixes and the show came in with a pretty good first act and a horrible second act. Stratas was amazing, but so were Marcia Lewis, Terence Mann and Lonny Price.  Larry Kert didn't want to play the villain and should have been replaced, and Judy Kuhn has never given a better performance.

I agree down the line on "Rags." Strouse has written his own books and lyrics for shows, so he should have been working along with the rest of them. Still, in his defense, outside of the performances (I still remember Judy Kuhn's haunted eyes as she sang the title song on the Tonys), Strouse's music is the best thing about the show.

Reading the "Spider-Man" reviews on www.BroadwayStars.com. I love this review from something called TheCraptacular:

"It sucks.

"It sucked after the first preview and after the 30th. It will suck after its first official performance, and after its last, and on its 4,000th, which I’m sure it will play, undoubtedly to a packed house. It sucks worse than anything you’ve seen in ages, and maybe anything you’ve seen in your life. "

Not to say I only like bad reviews. I'm sorry any show received such a notice, but the writing is funny.

The book was by Joseph Stein, and there were a couple of clinker numbers:
    Hard to be a Prince
    Yankee Boy
    Wanting

The second act stumbled along, but the "Four Sunny Rooms" duet was delightful. In the first act, "Brand New World" which should have become a huge production number was still delightful enough to make you think the show would be a hit.

Rags is an important show for me for many reasons.  I played it in 1995 at a local high school.  I fell in love with the score, and with my first ever love.  The relationship lasted a mere 6 weeks because of some immaturity on my part and after the break-up, Rags was difficult to listen to for the past 15 years.  (there's a book in here somewhere) - anyway... recently, that person has appeared in my life again and miraculously, Rags is easier to listen to again, and I'm glad of that because I've missed it.  No - nothing will ever happen again with the first love, but the fact that they have returned to my life is enough.  I happen to love the song "Wanting", it may be crappy, but I love the haunting strings.  Yeah, there's a book here somewhere....

That's the worst review I've ever seen.

As I recall it read: "God did not intend for John Wayne to be a director."

Done.

As to Mr Yap, I've provided him with Appendix orchestrations for the unreleased complete projects of THE MUSIC MAN, SEVEN BRIDES FOR SEVEN BROTHERS, and 42nd STREET (there may be more). I could be wrong, but I believe they're unreleased becasue he doesn't have the money to finish them, and I doubt he's finished recording ANYONE CAN WHISTLE, ONE TOUCH OF VENUS or FIDDLER ON THE ROOF either.

I would certainly like to have them all, but who knows if they will ever be released?

-But at least I like the song.

Jose,

Will you be around for

this? (http://hot-chocolate-festival.com/)

Ummm....

YES!!

In fact, I already started last week. :)

-And, Maury Rubin, the owner and their resident Hot Chocolate Magician, even told me that he would make up a batch of any of the flavors I missed while I was in Memphis.  Thankfully(?), since some of the flavors repeat later in the month, I've only missed three - although the "Superbowl Hot Chocolate" is just a variation of the "Stout" and "Beer". He made a batch with Old Milwaukee and another one with a Pittsburgh beer. ;)

I also believe Maury may be granting me a "Free-for-All" on the final day again. :)

As for the Topic of the Day...

I run hot and cold on Weill.  It really depends on the performers, interpretation and my mood.  I do have a fondness for the score to Street Scene since I sang Mr. Maurrant in college - and I was/am not a baritone.  Alas, I've heard "Lonely House" and "What Good Would The Moon Be" massacred one too many times in auditions, so.. Ah, well...

And speaking of Weill...

My friend Jennifer Peterson will be presenting two evenings of Weill songs at the Gershwin Hotel in New York City, this Friday and next Friday.  She's basically doing a "chronology" of his songs.  She has two singers, a soprano and tenor, who will be covering most of the material, but she will also be bringing in special guests each night too.

You can view the special guests and get a peek at the program here:

kurt weill uncovered (http://operamission.org/)

*I may be even putting in a special guest appearance. We shall see...

**Both night will also be Ustream'd, so you can watch it via the interwebs.

As for last night's Liver and Onions discussion...

My mom and dad would occasionally make Liver and Onions for dinner while we were growing up. And there's actually an "official" Filipino version of liver and onions - I think it's just the addition of garlic and some vinegar. However, I can't remember the last time I had calf's liver and onions.  Hmm... Chicken livers, however, are a different story.

DR elmore - Word from one of the clerks at The Met Gift Shop is that MAHAGONNY will be released as an individual title next fall. <fingers crossed>

And as for last night...

Well...

We had dinner in the hotel's restaurant. The Food and Beverage Manager took very good care of our table of 12. He even brought out a bunch of appetizers "on the house". In fact, he brought out so many appetizers, that we all could have feasted on those instead of ordering our own appetizers and entrees: steak and vegetable kabobs, chicken empanadas, a cheese plate, artichoke hearts stuffed with goat cheese, mini-Beef Wellingtons, chicken spring rolls, and even two plates of petit fours. Needless to say, there were plenty of leftovers. Thankfully, we were able to box all of those up, and put them out on a table outside the bar for all the "starving actors" to enjoy. I think all but the cheese plate was gone in under 30 minutes.

And I have to say, for hotel food, it was a pretty good meal. -Although, I'm guessing that the Food and Beverage Manager was also showing his appreciation for the "record-breaking" business they did at the hotel bar on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and last night. -In fact, they had their highest-grossing Monday night by 9:00 last night. ;)

Larry, I don't know if I've mentioned this before, but...I LOVE KIM CRISWELL!!  And I'd LOVE a copy of the recording (if you haven't already sent one to me and I've forgotten that you have).

I think this is hilarious. I have no idea if it is true.

Well, she has seen three -- out of how many we don't know. They were not all tagged. All the desert milkweed survived just fine, but it didn't have any new growth. I had some in pots that had new growth, so we planted those. The tiny caterpillars need the new growth to chew on.

Home again! No check again. This asshole running the finances of the foundation in Philadelphia continues to work my last nerve, and I am not amused.

He must also work for the IRS.

That reminds me. Sunday I asked the church treasurer about the W2 for taxes, and she didn't know what I was talking about.

Seventy-three hours into the movie "Star" and Richard Crenna arrives. That must mean a few more days to go before this one ends. Or does it ever end? It hasn't really started yet. Well, nothing terribly interesting.

They totally ignore Gertrude's affair with Daphne duMaurier or her early attempts to get into Noel's pants, as well as Richard Aldrich's sexuality. That might have spiced the movie up!
It might have. So might a script, a director, a choreographer and a costume designer.

"The Saga of Jenny" is the nadir for me; it looks nothing like LADY IN THE DARK. I did like some of the numbers although I've really repressed most of the film. I remember I liked it better than FUNNY GIRL and HELLO DOLLY!
I liked abdominal surgery better than the kidney stone.

Well, I must be leaving.  I'm working for concessions (not ushering...darn) for the national touring company of A Chorus Line (http://wcpa.squarespace.com/upcoming-events/2011/2/8/the-national-broadway-tour-of-a-chorus-line.html)!  I'm sure that it'll be fabulous!

Why don't they remake "A Chorus Line" and make it better, instead of remaking a classic and making it worse?

Other than the fact that it's in the campus of General Theological Seminary on 21st Street in very West Chelsea, no I don't know much about it.

Are you planning a trip to NY and thinking of staying there?

Well, I am always thinking of a New York trip, Ben.  They sent me an e-mail with rates at $135.00 per night, but once I started checking, I couldn't find any nights that were actually at that price (unless I could get there today).

I ordered ANGLE OF REPOSE from the library & it has already been shipped, except I don't want to read it yet.  I had planned to read this as a possible pick for my next book.  Today the woman hosting the June gathering said it is her favorite book & I suggested she take it.  Over the weekend I gave a gem of a book, THE CELLIST OF SARAJEVO, to the person who needed to make a decision for March and she loved it.  Now I need to continue my search.  I only have seven months to make a decision.

If only we didn't have the paperback rule I think I would go with UNBROKEN.  I put that on my library queue & there are only 70 people ahead of me.  By the time it is available it just might be out in paperback.

Why do you have a paperback rule? Do most people buy the books and not take them out from the library?  Or does everybody live so close to each other in your group that they would all be from the same library!

We all use the same library system.  Our town has a number of used book store.  The main book store gives us a 25% discount on any discussion book we purchase & books can be ordered on-line at good prices.  It was suggested today we drop the paperback rule & one person protested.  I agreed along with only one other person.  We have broken the rule to or three times in all the years I've been in the group.  We also share as someone is always asking to borrow from others.

A good number of times a book was chose only to realize later it wasn't out in paperback yet.

With my former book club, the rule was that the library had to have the correct number of copies available. though at least one member bought hers each time.

We have anywhere between 12 & 14 members at a time.  How many were in your group?

As for last night's Liver and Onions discussion...

My mom and dad would occasionally make Liver and Onions for dinner while we were growing up. And there's actually an "official" Filipino version of liver and onions - I think it's just the addition of garlic and some vinegar. However, I can't remember the last time I had calf's liver and onions.  Hmm... Chicken livers, however, are a different story.

The 13 Coins Restaurant in Seattle has a wonderful sauté of chicken livers, mushrooms and onions.

And for my late-ish dinner, I happened to have a pasta dish that consisted of Cavatelli with Chicken Livers, Bacon and Caramelized Onions.  YUM!

-Oh, and some Milk Chocolate Ice Cream and Green Apple Sorbet. YUM too!
