George -
If you get a chance, watch Jay Leno tonight; the combination of Lady GaGa, Sofia Vergara and John Legend makes for an interesting show.

Excerpt:
Sofia - that is my son Manolo...
GaGa (quietly) - did you name him after the shoe?
And the word of the day is: INVEIGLE!
Where has Oregon? I don't know, Alaska.
What did Tennessee?
Where did Maryland?

There is much better Sondheim fodder from "We're Gonna Be All Right" from Do I Hear a Waltz": you get a clever triplet rhyme of intellectual, ineffectual and homosexual.
Thanx to Woody for the speedy lyric search.

PS Mary Rodgers insisted the songs lyrics be gutted pre-production.
Woody offers his own take:
An intellectual is often someone with an intellect that makes sure you know it!
This is out of nowhere....a faint memory of a school room exercise...circa laet 1950s?
John G., you should get Sandra to help you with your paper. She is very good at writing on and on about nothing.
The lines DR John G quoted were the ones from "Do I Hear A Waltz" and it was Dorothy Rodgers who realized the lines were about the Rodgers family. And I am privy to much more than Woody's own take. Only I cannot reveal all that I know.
Yesterday my sister put my niece's (1 yr 9 m) dinner up on the kitchen counter for a second while she went to the other room. Then she hears "uh-oh". Someone she had managed to reach the counter, reach the plate... Anyhow my sis found the dinner sitting on the floor (plastic plate). I thought it sounded funny.
Can you imagine, "uh oh" :)
How much food could have been on the plate anyways?
My sis just wonders how the kid was able to reach the counter. My guess. Her tippy toes!
Gosh, just like my almost disaster with Yogi yesterday ;)Has poor Yogi been forced to enure Tofu?
Does anyone remember the 1950s TV series SOLDIERS OF FORTUNE which starred DR DRuxy's client John Russell and Chick Chandler?
I picked up the entire series on DVD due to the fact that it has gotten such glorious reviews on certain interweb sights.
I was not familiar with the show, but after watching just one episode, I have to admit that it is quite good.
John Russell always seemed such a stoney type, but he has a lot of personality in this show. Some fun guest stars show up in future episodes, I have noticed. I think both Sally Fraser and Gloria Talbott are coming up soon, if I recall.

A. I was wrong about which Rodgers.
B. "Woody's take" was on "intellectual" not on Do I Hear A Waltz.
C. The lyrics quoted by John do not appear in the version printed in Sondheim's book "Finishing The Hat", nor are they sung on the original Broadway Cast Recording; they do, however, appear in the Kimmel recording of the Pasadena Playhouse production. The Sondheim Evening Tribute concert (1973) "was (the first presentation) with (the) original lyrics, which were never used in the stage production of Do I Hear a Waltz"* Neither the Tribute nor the Pasadena versions are exactly the same as the one published in Finishing The Hat, but are much closer than the thin version in the Broadway production.

I just heard from the hospital and I'm schedule to be admitted at 8:30. I have to fill out paperwork and then get prepped so I'm assuming it will start around 9 or 9:30 (I may be wildy optimistic here). I don't know how long it takes or how long I'll be under (I see the anesthesiologist after the paperwork). Anthony will contact Larry when things are done and he can report to you all.Vibes that all goes well.

It's funny because I did a whole frenzied search for that couplet yesterday. I checked my copy of the libretto/play and it's the whitewashed lyrics. I listened to the original cast and the Sondheim tribute. Couldn't find my copy of the BK-produced version. I was beginning to doubt my memory and/or sanity, when I Googled it and it came up on the following, which tried to sell me a ring tone. Sorry, no cell phone here, but I do appreciate the confirmation.

Lar, we got the CDs today. Thanks. I can sit and listen to Venus over the next 5 days. We're listening to the Jubilee highlights right now.
Tuesday morning greetings! I have a day of house prep today, because it's been decided that my cousin from Japan and his 7-year-old son will stay with us when they arrive tomorrow. They may eventually move into my aunt's house (my cousin's mom), but it needs some attention and I want him to see the condition in which she left it last Friday.
Well, that explains why so many people call Oregon, Oree'gone.
Oregonians pronounce it Orah'gun, and many of them get quite riled if it is pronouned any other way.
Well, this Oregonian doesn't get riled about it...I couldn't care less how it is pronounced.
And, apparently, it was a song recorded by Perry Como (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NztfOSyCCFM)
BK, you really must take a trip sometime to someplace other than New York, where you stay longer than a day or two. One day in Florida and most of it will be in a rehearsal room?

I have arrived both safe and sound and sound and safe and am ensconced in the Hampton Inn. We had a little hiccup when I checked in - when I booked the room, the reservations person said I was lucky, getting the last King. I told him that I would never take a room with double beds so that was good. But they had me in a room with double beds and told me they were sold out. Im nothing if not intractable, and when she saw that I was being very nice but very obstinate, she found me a King. So, all's well.
The second part of the flight was only about an hour and forty minutes - they gave us a turkey slice and cheese chunks for our snack.

That was speedy!
DR Ben, tomorrow I will be at City Center most of the day. I won't be able to post any information when Anthony calls me until I get home around 4pm.
TOD: I checked a volume of Richard Wilbur poems out of the library today. At the back, he included a few lyrics from "Candide" as well as one from a musical version of "The Madwoman of Chaillot" that he was writing with Michel Legrand. The lyric was "The Rag-Picker's Song" and it was thematically very similar to "Garbage" in Jerry Herman's version. Because I know the music, I think I like Herman's version better. But it would be nice to hear what Legand did in setting the lyric.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Vibes of support for DR DakotaCelt! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am a big believer that, when your world turns to crap over and over, the universe is saying to you that you are not where it means for you to be. I suspect every DR is now thinking, why are you still in NYC? I can only state that my life in Ohio was a long barrage of "move on" vibes from the universe that I ignored for a long time. My bad days in Manhattan are just general my-life-is-miserable moments. I do believe, DR DakotaCelt, that the universe is telling you to find greener pastures away from the horse's asses that shat all over you for the past several years.
They say we may get rain over the next few days. That would be welcome, indeed. We haven't had rain (other than just enough to get the sidewalk wet) since New Years.
We may not have any wildflowers this year.
My neighbor said that the City Yard Police were parked on our street for several minutes today. I guess we will see if I get cited for my wildflowers.
I have had it with area and as far as I am concerned let teh flood this spring wipe it off the map
This room has a very modern Zenith TV from the year One.
How about a PM, Larry??
;)
Here is my favorite 'state' song:
Copper comes from Arizona
Peaches come from Georgia
And lobsters come from Maine
The wheat fields
Are the sweet fields of Nebraska
And Kansas gets bonanzas from the grain
Old whiskey comes from old Kentucky
Ain't the country lucky
New Jersey gives us glue
And you, you come from Rhode Island
And little old Rhode Island
Is famous for you
Cotton comes from Lou-siana
Gophers from Montana
And spuds from Idaho
They plow land
In the cow land of Missour-a
Where most beef meant
For roast beef seems to grow
Grand canyons come from Colorad-a
Gold comes from Nevada
Divorces also do
And you, you come from Rhode Island
Little old Rhode Island
Is famous for you
Pencils come from Pennsylvania
Vest from Vest Virginia
And Tents from Tent-esee
They know mink where they grow
Mink in Wyo-mink
A camp chair in New Hamp-chair
That's for me
And minnows come Minnesota
Coats come from Dakota
But why should you be blue?
For you, you come from Rhode Island
Don't let them ride Rhode Island
It's famous for you
I LOVE this song!
~~~Continued Vibes for DR DakotaCelt!!~~~
I thought I was feeling a bit better yesterday, and I felt okay today, but I am still hugely congested and the mucous just keeps on keeping on - it just won't let go. My voice is completely shot and I need it back in two weeks for the Gardenia show. I didn't speak at all yesterday or today and still it's weak. Blechhh. Went to the diner and had a decent chicken salad sandwich and about eight french fries.

I triple that. Florida is so nice. You should have stayed a few extra days!
DR Edi - glad you were able to find the sweetness in Valentine's Day, even in the ER. So, how's your Dad?
Thanks to you all for the vibes. They are much appreciated.And vibes and prayers for a successful surgery.
I'm about to turn in for the night.
You will next hear from me perhaps in the early morning before I leave for Beth Israel or sometime on Thursday.
Love to you all, my Friends.

She's not ready to be featured on HOARDERS, but there were a few signs that assisted living might not be a bad idea.

I am so NOT cut out for a career in geriatrics...
DR Edi - glad you were able to find the sweetness in Valentine's Day, even in the ER. So, how's your Dad?
His lungs were good, his shoulder is probably a sprain or possibly a tear in the rotator cuff. He has a bed sore that gives him problems so he has to be turned on his side several times a day and that's when it might have happened. Now that he knows it's nothing too serious he will probably agree to some physical therapy. The main delay was that he gets transported there by ambulance and we had to wait for hours for one to show up. But still, nice to see him mid-week. I love my dad.
Another little problem I'm having is the ear thing. You know what happens to your ears as your landing. They normally pop after a few minutes on the ground, but mine haven't yet, so my hearing is all screwed up. Is there any way to deal with that? Anyway, just wrote liner notes, and shall now write the notes, get them posted, and get to bed - must get a really good night's sleep.
I never realized how serious bedsores can get until he got one. So we all keep an eye on it. The Dr. prescribed some kind of air mattress with pockets that is supposed to help, so we're going to try that, too. How he manages to keep his sense of humor after all he's been through this year is inspiring to me.
DR Laura - I went to the hospital to see my aunt about 5pm. She was awake and eating dinner, but wanting to know why no one from her family had been to see her and complaining about how the hospital was fouling up her medications, etc. Her nurse told me that there are no conclusive test results yet. Then, about 8pm I had a phone call from my Mom who was panicked because Aunt Jo is not on the "in the hospital" list on the retirement community's closed circuit TV station. I'm a little weary and hope that my cousin's arrival tomorrow will provide some relief.
