Chest issue update --- everything seems fine, I believe the strained muscle has passed.

Tonight was opening night for Working.  It was a great show, but with a young cast.  There are some "older" folks in the show, but the majority are younger people.  I'm amazed that the orchestra parts are still a mess and haven't been "Finale-ized" since there are changes made all the time to this show.  But we're having fun nonetheless!!

I too enjoyed Mr Robert Downey Jr as CHAPLIN.....

TOD:  LIMELIGHT

I have seen some of the short films, but I do not know their titles.  I am not a great fan of GOLD RUSH or MODERN TIMES, but I do also like THE GREAT DICTATOR.

too many shorts to mention, but my fav chaplin film is City Lights. The final shot always has me in tears.

For me its up there in the top five.

Others are:

Gone With The Wind: The pull back crane shot of Scarlett moving through the trainyard with all the wounded soldiers. The further it goes the more wounded you see until it finally stops on the tattered confederate flag.

Sound of Music. The camera moving into Julie Andrews on the top of the hill and her twirl.

ET: ET's lit finger pointing to Elliot's head

Touch of Evil. The opening tracking shot. Repeated and stolen many times since. But the first is always the best

any others?

Good morning, all!  I am tired, but I wil continue to be so until next weekend, after the Encores! orchestra reading. Today and tomorrow are Toyland days since this week and next are mostly about finishing the orchestra parts for Thursday.

When I return from downtown, I have to do more work on "Once In Love With Amy." The orchestra parts for the show are a mess. When Frank Loesser began Msic Theatre International in the early 1950s, he put Don Walker and Mathilde Pincus in charge of the music. In 1954, Walker notified Loesser that the WHERE'S CHARLEY? materials were in terrible shape and getting lots of complaints. This is because they were sending out the original parts, which had been through a tryout, two Broadway runs, which may have affected further orchestra changes, a tour, and a few stock productions. The parts, if they're like other original orchestra parts from the 1930s and 1940s, were  most likely a mess of pasted and taped over cuts, pencil corrections and changes, and not easily legible. So, Walker and Pincus redid everything. They didn't work from the original full scores because those have vanished - I think they're buried in some Warner Brothers archive for the film version -so they worked from photostat copies of the materials from the Feuer and Martin (producers) office.  And they simplified things. There are no doubles at all in the score now, although Jonathan Tunick remembers seeing the show for his birthday in 1949 and watching the bassoon player switch to a clarinet.

Mathilde did a piano-vocal score based on the parts, wherein she refers to Clarinet 3 and Harp, although there are no harp and clarinet 3 parts in the current rental materials. Also, in 1948, the show had vocal arrangements by Gerry Dolan, but on its Broadway return in 1951, the vocal arrangements were new and by Herb Greene. So the issue of chorus parts becomes another can of worms.

In 1998, I put the score back together from the orchestra parts and, working quickly, noted a lot of errors and suggestions. In "Once In Love With Amy," the flute part is clearly the old clarinet, so at Thursday's reading we'll hear the number played with flute and then the number again with my suggested clarinet fixes.
So, I have to write the clarinet part this weekend.

I need a day to myself to sleep late, do nothing and regenerate.

Out of the blue, I received a package from my sister yesterday that included the second volume of Busby Berkeley movies. That coupled with DR Elmore's "One Touch of Venus" and sundry other musical goodies really has made it seem like Christmas all over again.

Regeneration vibes for DR Elmore, as FJL so eloquently phrased it.

But I have a question. I realize Tunick was interested in orchestrations, but how could he have seen the bassoonist grab a clarinet? Was his seat in the orchestra pit? Or was it staged like the most recent "Gypsy" with the band on the stage?

Greetings from Toyland!

Jonathan has never told me where he sat with his family in 1949, only the story about the player changing instruments. Perhaps they sat in a box from which he could see the stage into the wings and into the pit. He was a clarinetist, so perhaps the seats were chosen so he could keep an eye on the orchestra?

In other news, I went to the foreclosure sale yesterday expecting to witness Turner's business going up on the block.   It didn't happen even though I looked at the court docket the  night before to make sure it was still there.   There were many others that were canceled so I thought it was a "go".

Anyway, I sat though the entire thing waiting for a chance to go up and ask what happened.  It seems that Mr. Turner has filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy and it must have happened within the past day.  I was heartbroken at first because I thought that meant the end of any chance of my collecting my money.

Since I was across the street from the law library, I went in and asked for books on chapter 7 and what it means to someone like me.  While it isn't all good news, there is a very good chance that I can get the judge to not forgive my part of Mr. Turners debt.   If I understood what I read correctly, a person who files to get out of paying for fraud won't be granted his/her bankruptcy.

Since my civil judgement paperwork clearly states "This is an action for damages for breach of contract and fraudulent inducement." as well as the print outs of the times not only I was on TV but 2 others for money Mr. Turner took (proving he has a pattern of taking money), I believe I have a case.

I'm just going to have to find out when his court date is and make sure I show up to present these facts.  As a lien holder, I believe I should receive some type of paperwork regarding the where and when this will happen.

I can't imagine that a judge would let him get away with not paying his victim what the courts have already said he owes.

And the saga continues.......

All I can do is try.

So, I'm down but I'm not out.   Yet.  Lord only knows how long this is going to take.

On a lighter note...

I brought home the Valentines balloon they used at work as a decoration because they were just going to pop it.  I wanted to see what the dogs would think about it.

Well, last night both Sheena and Toby ran from it and went out side.  They wouldn't come back in until I put it Mom's room and were still very ify about the whole thing.

Today Toby has spent his morning barking at it from the safety of the hall.  I'd die laughing if it would only catch some type of breeze and head towards him.  :)  It's a safe bet he wouldn't be able to get away from it fast enough!

I guess I'm a mean Mom.

Had a fun work session with the twelve-year-old and have finished the song choices - too many, and now we'll narrow it down to twelve or thirteen.  Then we went to Casa Vega for a late lunch - at three-thirty it was jammed with people and it got worse.  By the time we left at five there were about thirty people waiting to get in.  This, someone can explain to me, because it defies all logic.

I have oatmeal every day at work.  It's instant and not the best but I don't have time to make the real kind.

I also have to eat it with water instead of milk and no sugar.  It's really yucky but I have to have something to eat when I get to work because there are meds I have to take that you need to eat with.

I also have meds that you can't have food with so I take those before I leave home.

matthew - this mother would be so much happier if you would go get that chest pain checked out - even if it has passed......

Thanks, vixmom, for the concern.  However, it really wasn't a pain more like a muscle ache.  It was definitely a muscle issue and not a "pain" if that make sense :)

not to be a nag or a gloomy gus - but I would just like to point out  that the heart is a muscle....

I agree with you, vixmom.

You have Girl Scout cookies already?  I tried to buy Camp Fire mints from the young ladies and gentlemen, but they were SOLD! OUT! OF! MINTS! {Sorry, I have been keeping that in all afternoon.}   So I had to buy their Almond Caramel Clusters instead.  I am guessing that there may be four clusters in this $5.00 box.

Hello, all!

Well, I found out earlier today that I'm officially cast in TAO's remounting of Cannibal! The Musical!  I will be playing the part of Nutter.  I don't remember which part that is, so I'll find out Monday.  We were supposed to have a read-through and potluck tomorrow night (when I would be working concessions for Kathy Najimy and the Seattle Women's Chorus), but Sunday's read-through/potluck has been cancelled.  We'll be having the read-through (but no potluck) on Monday.  I won't have to miss the read-through and I won't have to feel guilty about seeing Kathy Najimy and the Seattle Women's Chorus!

Until later!

Had a great dinner at tiny little Italian restaurant tonight, which, as it turns out, is run by old friends. Started with smoked salmon with a great olive oil, followed by a risotto filled with mascarpone and green peppercorns. Main course was an aged fillet with a Barolo sauce and sauteed mushrooms. Dessert was an almond roll with an almond cream filling. Very nice. Friends loved it.
