Good morning, all! I sleptlater than I wished and the laundry, after a wet walk down the block, is in the washers. As DR Ben reported, it is raining out, which should teach me for not doing the laundry yesterday, but I doubt it.  I've forgotten any dreams I may have had last night, but I think I slept well.

There was a response this morning to The Email that was positive, but once again, I am left with the question did you ever read any of the ones I sent you?  A lot of my issues were not addressed, and a charge made three times now against me and my colleagues was denied; that bothers me. Who knows what will happen next?

Today, EILEEN bar counts, score checks, and a listen to the Herbert songs.

First more coffee and the laundry.

Disaster movies? Barbra Streisand's HELLO DOLLY!

There's an Ohio connection to the title of today's notes:  The Rains Came is a novel by

Louis Bromfield (http://www.ohioana-authors.org/bromfield/index.php)

I have toured his home, Malabar Farm, near Mansfield, OH.  Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall were married there.

The librarian at my library really upset me this morning.

I never really want to ask her to do anything because she usually acts like she does not like me.  But today the librarian at the front desk said I had to ask the other lady something.

A book had come in (the new Lisa Gardner book) that I had wanted since I first heard the title (I requested it at least 6 months ago). Anyhow they lost my reservation AGAIN (I keep track so i am almost positive I gave it in).

Anyhow the librarian who does not like me crossed the line. She looked at me and said, "how come this does not happen to anyone else but it keeps happening to you?" (implying I was lying).

I just couldn't believe she said that even if she thought it. I told her that whenever it has happened before and the librarian has looked really hard for it they almost always find it. Plus if I reserve 100 books a year and someone else reserves 10, isn't more likely to happen to me. Plus most people are probably too shy or not 100% sure they actually reserved the book.

She ended up ruining my swim because I was so shocked that she would say that. The other librarian told me to start photocopying my slips. I am going to do that and have the person i hand them in to sign my photocopy.

:(

Then there were 2 extremely slow people in the fast lane. And they kept going ahead of me. So i had to wait every single time I got to the end, which was annoying.

At least there was nobody in line for the shower or changing room when i got out. And nobody walked in on my shower, although i really hurried because I wasn't in the mood for anyone to walk in. :)

That is a good idea.  Too bad you can't do it all on-line like I do.  I can track where the book is (library & due date) and my spot on the queue.  It isn't perfect but over-all I'm pleased.  I can also put a hold on my spot & begin it again in the same place I left off.  Of course this extra perk can also keep me at the same number in the queue longer if someone ahead of me dropped out & returned.  A couple of times I've noticed my number go up a spot instead of down but at least I know why it happened.

Like BK, I experienced rains of epic proportions over the weekend.  Friday afternoon/evening was really something.  Thought it had played itself out by Saturday afternoon, but no.  Saturday night was a monsoon.

In a lull right now, but more rain this evening.  Another storm expected to move in tomorrow e'en.  Another on Thursday.  And more on the weekend.

Lawsy....m-o-o-n, that spells rain.

I expect the nasty librarian didn't apologize when you mentioned the slips were found.  It makes me wonder if she is trying to hide her personal incompetency.

I would report her. But I think she is very high up in the chain of command. She is in charge of acquiring all the books. She is the head reference librarian.

I don't think she's incompetent. And I don't think she dislikes her job. The system is very flawed (handing in book requests on slips of paper). They know it's flawed. If she had just said she was sorry this kept happening to me. And that she would try to look for the slip I would have been okay.

She just doesn't like me I think because I always call her on it whenever there is an error. And I am pretty sure that nobody else does.
Title: Re: THE RAINS CAME
Post by: Jennifer on March 21, 2011, 11:36:47 AM
It's sort of amazing that they don't lose more slips.

But I don't get why this keeps happening to me. IT seems to happen mostly when it's a book I really want that I have requested way in advance.

I wonder if the nasty librarian actually believes that I am making this stuff up.  I told the nicer librarian at the front desk that I don't think the lady likes me.

I don't know if I believe any of that CBS stuff, although they are such whores I wouldn't put it past them.  Rather than do the right and responsible thing, it's always about the money - but if they take him back and if he comes back he'll probably make even more obscene amounts than he's already making.  And it sends a clear message to all other actors - do whatever you want, behave like a pig, make fun of your network and producer, and be a complete jerk and we'll still take you back.  But I just don't really believe it.

The sun is out here - what else is new?  I'm not sure about the partay tonight - I'm really not in the mood to be sociable.  However, all CDs are shipped, I had a sandwich and onion rings for lunch, and got pretty good news from the dealer that he'll be sending a little more than usual this week, so that will be very helpful.

At least with my photocopying from now on I will have proof that I was not lying.

We can request any title that is in the system, except for reference and certain other library-use-only titles.  It's all electronic.  Only the staff can change the order of the holds list...for instance, holds will normally expire after a year unless you change the expiration date on your holds.  If something's been on order for more than a year, and the hold expires, staff can put the hold back on and put you back at the top of the list (however, some staff reordered the holds cues (oops) queues to put themselves at the top...but this is NOT supposed to be done for personal holds!).  Anyway, we got rid of paper requests several years ago and I've never heard of anyone's holds being dropped without someone manually deleting them for specific reasons.

:(

I suspect the reason it keeps happening to you is that you request them so far in advance of the book being available  6 months is a long time to keep track of a little piece of paper in a busy library

In those cases, it's not that the queue was that long, but the publisher or author has announced that a book will (eventually) be written.  So, we used to create a dummy bibliographic record so that patrons could put holds on the title, and then we wouldn't have to deal with ALL those paper requests.  But the problem is that some books don't get written.  The publisher will say it's still going to be written, but they don't say when.  We now have a policy that patrons can't request a title to be purchased unless it's actually published...but there are still some titles that have been in the system since before that policy was adopted, so they're essentially grandfathered in.

That is understandable.  I have a hold request on a book that has been published, only not in the US.  It is the fourth book in a series.  The last one took about half a year for me to get and then only because the library obtained a copy from the UK.  My guess it was a donation.

Speaking of libraries and waiting a long time for something and...Ishtar(!)...has anyone heard of this documentary that's supposedly going to be made?  It's called Waiting for Ishtar (http://www.waitingforishtar.com/) and it's about people who have requested it from their library and are waiting to see the movie.  It doesn't look like the website has been updated since 2008 (other than comments), so I don't know what's going on, but it sounds very interesting...if it ever happens.

DR Jennifer - Something tells me that you're not the only person who's reservation slips get lost. You just happen to be the only one at the library at the times that you are there who has to deal with a lost slip. In any case...

I would still report the reference librarian. Someone there should know just how non-service-oriented she is. -Although, I highly suspect, that they already do. :-\

As I recall, some New York Times critic, Vincent Canby, I think, loved "Ishtar." It made his best list of the year. I never thought the movie was that bad. Not that good, either, but not bad.

did you have a hot chocolate?

Yes.

Dark.

"Without".

-And it was soooo good today. As much as I love the Hot Chocolate Festival, I do like it when the hot chocolate actually gets a chance to warm up properly in their "vats". Sometimes the turnover is very fast during the HotChocFest.

On my way to work today I listened to a story on NPR about the Music Festival in Austin and thought " that's where John G was -  I wonder if Druxy ever wandered through and enjoyed any of the music"
I wish we had had a change to meet, but time slipped away.

And...

A friend of mine called me earlier this evening to cover an orchestra rehearsal for him tomorrow morning at 10:00 since he's been dealing with a cold that doesn't seem to go away.

And...

He just called me again to tell me that he's heading to the ER. He suspects he may have pneumonia. :-\

And...

I think I'm going to log off and start getting ready for bed. Hopefully, I won't have to meet my friend at the ER later.

Goodnight.

I hope your friend is ok, Jose.

I hope so too. Unfortunately, there seems to be an uptick in cases on pneumonia right now.

I have a friend in New Jersey just getting over pneumonia. That may be gone, but the residual bronchitis is now making life tough for her.

With that, health vibes for all!

Back from a fun partay - a surprise birthday bash for our very own Miss Alet Taylor.  Lots of fun people and one person I absolutely loathe - the director of the show she's currently in - I don't know what he's really like but he comes off with such an uppity vibe and he knows who I am, has met me several times (and always is completely odd) and stood there and would not acknowledge me or say hello.  I came close to seriously getting in his face and just standing there until he HAD to say something, but it was a partay and why bother.  What a peckerhead.

I had to park at Amoeba as there's absolutely no parking anywhere near where the Taylors live (it's all permit).  So, it was a brisk five block walk there and back.  I took in all the trade stuff that had accumulated and I got a really jerky guy who gave me the worst trade EVER.  I should have just packed it up and taken it home and come again with it because I probably could have gotten double what I got, but I didn't want to lug it back.
