Well, you've read the notes, the notes were personal and spoke of a project, and now it is time for you to post until the personal cows come home.

Good morning, all! I am caught up on sleep and ready to tackle another EILEEN score' I finished the Act One Finale around 6 pm yesterday, caught a bit of tv news, watched more of THE DUCHESS OF DUKE STREET and went to bed.

Last night was another Drama Book Shop dream. I've been having many of them, and I am not sure why. The shop was a large part of my New York for around fourteen years, but I haven't worked there since 1997!

Tuesday morning greetings!  Richard and I left after lunch yesterday for a 2:30 showing of DOUBLE HOUR, then went to Nordstrom's (dress shopping for me), and to a new deli for dinner.  We stopped at the grocery and the bank on the way home and found Rob here, fresh from his weekend in Michigan with Mary Linda and her parents.  We had a lot of catching up to do, which is why I never logged back on here.

I'll be E & T most of today, too, because it's grantwriters' day in Dayton.

I had a very long, drawn out dream last night.  I was at either an ancient history museum or some odd, spacious store and I was there to see an appearance by Mr Stephen Sondheim.  While the crowd waited, there was a monitor that was showing very short clips of plays which I didn't recognize and actors I didn't know.  I grew bored watching, so wandered around the museum/store, which had a odd mix of displays--parts of human skeletons and bright, colorful posters of old B'Way musicals.  When Mr Sondheim finally appeared, he looked like he had been a prisoner in the Bastille--he had long dirty grey hair and a long scraggly beard.  From what I could pick out of talk in the crowd, it was because he had some kind of legal problems and he was trying to alter his look so he couldn't easily be picked out of a line-up.  Anyway, I don't recall what Mr. Sondheim talked about but there was a Q&A afterwards.  I asked him what he thought about the BOOK OF MORMON score.  As he answered, I realized that he was stating my own exact opinion of the score, almost word for word.  It was at that point that I knew I was dreaming and I woke up.

I have never really been a fan of 50's schlock horror/sci-fi.  I know I've seen a few, but I could hardly say I had a favourite.  Most of them I didn't like and have never seen twice.  One I remade...but the original is hardly a good movie -- THE FLY.

Damnation! I have misplaced a Full Score for the Opening of Act One. I cannot get my prnter to print a copy since the pdf online is 8.5x17 and my printer will not accommodate it. This mans at some point I will have to print it at Toyland, and I have no urge to make a trek downtown today. If I could only recall where the fat hell the original copy is!

I found this release due to the fact that I have temporarily moved on from my fascination with the outre recordings of Enoch Light and am now working my way through the Ferrante and Teicher catalog.  I just got a really interesting import CD of their two early 50s sides with prepared pianos.  Cool stuff.  Teicher's nephew is/was an attorney with whom I worked at a Portland law firm in the 1990s.

I liked MATINEE until the ending as well.....not needed, but I guess I was less annoyed by the personal story that was taking place.

It also has one of my favorite EVER movie moments.....when the community thinks that the Russians will be over the town at any moment and there is chaos in the grocery store.....one man pleads for shredded wheat, and when the manager says there isn't any....

MAN:  Don't you have any more in the back??!!!!!!

MANAGER:  No I don't have any more in the back.  You're just going to have to face the threat of Atomic Destruction without any goddamn shredded wheat!

I really think that THEM! is the best of the bunch.

It has an excellent script, good performances and holds up quite well.

Yes, if you remade it today, you'd have better CGI ants, but what else would you want to change?

Very little, I think.

I interviewed Gordon Douglas years ago, and he was more proud of this than any film he'd ever directed.

I guess it depends on the reason--films that have not been released on DVD due to lack of demand vs cost of manufactoring could make it.  But I guess there will be those that will be forever lost in rights and contract percentage limbo.

Well, it's not like Birgitte Nielsen didn't try to steal some of the spotlight and recapture some of the notoriety she gained back when she chewed men up and spit them out.  To piggyback on the Schwarzenegger scandals is pretty typical for her "sort".

I've heard the SPIDER-MAN score before on a badly recorded ootlegbay.  But having heard this clearer version I have to say, without a doubt, that is the least theatrical musical score in the history of musical theatre.

I am back from Dayton earlier than expected because I had only enough parking meter money to get me an hour and 10 minutes.  Yes, I could have gotten more change from the Check Out desk and gone back out to feed the meter, but it's too HOT for an extra walk to and from my car.  I did get a little grant research done and visited with a couple of my favorite former co-workers.

Leaving for a very hot audition and rehearsal.  Hopefully the troublesome people will stay home and be "too tired" to come over to the theatre.

For the troublesome folks at audition, you can always call them to the stage and then say, "NEXT!"

I started with a fairly productive day, but made the mistake of watching the daily news briefing on the flood.  I think I have compassion fatigue.    I'm pretty fascinated with it all and am TOTALLY distracted by it all.   I can't seem to get my work done, and it's driving me crazy.

I am very much looking forward to going to Viroqua for a couple days to see my nephew Adam and his family (SunDee and Gabe).  I knew I really needed to get out of town when I heard about a pancake breakfast Saturday at the Greek Church and thought  "Oh, maybe I better not go, I'll miss the pancake breakfast"  LOL!!

Actually it was supposed to be Greek Fest this weekend but it's postponed due to impending disaster, so I won't miss that

The funny thing is, they don't bother me at all, they just distract me.   I mean, I know which roads are closed, I know what has been done to protect the infrastructure, I think it's fascinating that the flood may actually help the endangered birds that nest on the sand bars because there will be more sand bars and that it will help the endangered sturgeon because more nutrients will go into the river...

Post by: Cillaliz on June 07, 2011, 02:54:17 PM
Everything around here is surreal.  Imagine that you find out that the government is going to flood part of your town in 14 days.   So you have 14 days to try to figure out what to do to protect the city water, electric and sewer systems, 14 days to build levees and sandbag whatever you can, 14 days for people who want to, to evacuate and try to find other places to live, and 14 days to wake up every morning wondering when it will be bad, how bad it will be and what a mess we have to clean up....in 2 months

Then in the South Dakota portion of the area it's like the DMZ.  National Guard troops everywhere. Blac hawk helicopters moving 1 ton sandbags.  Police telling homeowners when and if they can go to their houses.   Then an order to the same people who were working night and day on their houses that as of midnight last Friday, if you leave you can't come back for 2 months or more.  If you stay, you may not have electricity and we can't guarantee you'll be able to get out.

On the Nebraska side of the river, there are severe restrictions on sand bags and even people stealing sand bags from houses that were surrounded and the owners left.   While The Dunes get the National Guard and all the free sand bags they want, across the river, where it will flood just as bad, people have to buy them.  It's insane.   Rumors that dams are breaking or  bowing or other crazy things are running rampant.   It's exhausting even if you aren't doing anything to help.

Someone said the other day that psychologically they thought a tornado would be easier.  It hits you and you know right away what damage was done and can start recovering.   The folks in the way of the flooding have the luxury of 2 weeks to prepare, but it's two weeks of this huge thing looming over you and you know it's coming and when it's coming. But you also know that once it gets here, it will be here for 2 months before it starts to go away and you can see what damage was done.   Then you can start to recover.

I think we'll all be better once the water gets here.  It's just to strange in the meantime

I haven't really done that much to help, at least not compared to others.  I've done sandbags a couple times and I've taken lots of photos and shared them with the flood group.  They do appreciate that, so I guess that's a way of helping too.

Anyway, that's my rant, my update and my whatever....gotta go to a meeting.   Glad I'm leaving town this weekend...I'll probably spend alot of time on the computer, checking up on the folks back home...

She hid under the leopard-spotted fainting couch the second I opened the carrier. I let her hide a while, then we dragged her out and held her. She hid as soon as we let go of her.  A few minutes ago, I saw her in the Baby Box, so I put the babies in with her. She is still there, and she is letting me pet her. She'll come around. Eventually.

Back from Grant's.  Barbara's book is finished and going off to the publisher.  We got giddy at some point and laughed so hard I thought we were going to die.  But the best part of the visit was when Grant played me the first of the Guy Haines tracks - he's finally begun - and it's a stunner.  I'm not going to give away the program but will only say that the track was for Wichita Lineman - cannot wait for Guy to do the vocal.
