As great as a director Martin Scorsese is deamed to be he's never been a favorite director of mine and looking at his directing credits there are a lot of his films I've never seen. The ones that I have seen I don't believe I've seen more than once which is unusual for me. When I really like I film from a director I admire I try to see it at least twice. It may be over a period of years and they might not hold up on the second viewing at least it is something I've done.

So these are the films I enjoyed the first time and not sure if I would like them again on the second go around

Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore
After Hours
The King Of Comedy
New York Stories (Actual no memory about anything to do with his segment)

Last night's performance of THE MUSIC MAN was fine....with a good audience.  It will be sad when it is over after tonight's performance.....but it will also be a bit of a relief.

For two nights in a row said Farmer's Wife pictured here two days ago, has taken my chair from its place and put it in front of the fan so she can sit DURING THE SHOW with the FARMER - in the flow of traffic.....THE FARMER hisseff sits in the chair that Harold Hill put there for himself for the few minutes during the show he gets to sit down....and now both of us have to stand up....most of the other extra chairs are taken up by the urchins....and they have taken SIX of our chairs for extra seating in the house!

And that's the backstage report from THE MUSIC MAN.....except that last night some of the watching mothers brought SUGAR treats and SUGAR drinks for the children.....I do not imagine ANY of them slept last night.....they were certainly on HIGH SPEED backstage!

Scorsese:
New York, New York -- a bad movie that I love, but only for the music and for the look of the thing. I can't begin to count how many times I listened to that soundtrack as a kid and I've always wanted the movie to be better, but I am content with that recording. I remember the double album set with all those great photos. I even had the piano score.
The King of Comedy
Taxi Driver
Good Fellas

Liza:
Her performance in "The King of Comedy" is quite moving (she's the cardboard cutout).
Arthur
Her work on Arrested Development was also quite funny.

Had a wonderful time at the graduation party for Noor Ismael last night. Noor and her family came from Baghdad, Iraq 3 years ago. Quite and upheaval for a teenage girl, but she graduated with straight A's and will be off to college in September to study Engineering!

I am so proud of her!!

Her brother, Ali, will graduate next year. He isn't doing quite as well in school, but is holding his own. He has moved from being water boy on the school's football team to playing guard (or something like that) and he knows that he has to keep his grades up if he is to continue playing, and he has really been working hard at it!

Ali came to America barely able to speak any English, and now he sounds like any American high schooler...it is amazing the progress he has made!

Good morning, all!  Last night I watched three more episodes of THE DUCHESS OF DUKE STREET and stayed up too late. It's very gray outside, so we're in for some rain, as DR Jose mentioned. I need to head down to Toyland, check on the office and use the scanner.

When I get back, I have to clean up this dump. So much for the glamorous life!

DR vixmom, what horrible news! I can only imagine the mess you have on your hands and I wish you and vixdad a successful and easy cleanup.

DR JRand60, I think you should push the old bitch off the chair and provide other inducements for her to never appear in another production. Your friend playing Harold Hill should do the same to the person who took his chair. Some fools should be encouraged to leave the theatre.

I was working as a word processor (is there any stupider job title in existence?) when After Hours came out, so I've always had a soft spot in my heart for that film, specifically the scene where Griffin falls to his knees in the fetid alley and screams out, "I'm just a word processor--what do you want from me?"

Had a great time at Book of Mormon last night.

It really is a wonderful show and will win most of the musical Tonys I believe.

John G. I do tend to agree, the score is not great. I think it's one of the weaker links in the show but when the numbers are performed live on stage they have electricity and joy and great humor and come alive in a way they don't on the CD.

It really is a South Park influenced show and I've always felt that when South Park was working on all cylinders it was brilliant (since we don't have cable anymore I don't see the show, not that we watched it with any regularity anyway) but there is also an element of "kaa kaa, poo poo" in both South Park and this show, meaning "I'm saying kaa kaa poo poo because I can and you can't do anything about it, ha, ha, ha and I'm brilliantly funny when I do it." That happens more in the first act than the second and it's not a major focus. They have actually tried to write a real Broadway musical and, IMHO, they have succeeded. There are major pokes at the Mormons but there is also a respect for them and what they're trying to do. People keep saying there is heart in the show and I had to see it to believe it but it's true.

I'm not as fond of Josh Gad as everyone else seems to be. He's not bad but his character is the same kind of annoying unpleasant Barfee character (from Spelling Bee, he played Barfee when he replaced Dan Fogler in the original cast) and it wears thin. He has some great moments but thank God he's not the only leading character. I don't think I would have enjoyed the show as much. I also have to admit that I found his Playbill Online Q and A responses rather puerile and unpleasant. He seems to be channeling his character and if that's what he's like in real life, then so be it, but I don't need to know him.

I think Andrew Rannells is the real star. He's great. His second act number, I Believe, is a show stopper.

Nikki M. James is also wonderful and will probably win the Tony for Best Featured Actress in a Musical.

Hasa Diga Eebowai is a number in the first act. I won't translate it. You can google and get a translation if you want (if you haven't listened to the show already) I don't know if it even has a translation or if they just made up the phrase and the translation as part of the script but it's screamingly funny especially as sung and staged by the African tribe. If you think that was over the top, then wait until the second act when they do a play about Joseph Smith and the story of the Mormons. Wow!!!

I'm very glad I got to see the show, especially now with the pre-Tony energy. Luck was with us yesterday and I'm happy.

I'm seeing Death Takes a Holiday on Wednesday evening.

Do you happen to know if Darren Criss got dragged off stage by a crazed fan there too like he was in DC (http://youtu.be/Ot6LsqqxM7k)? ::)

*Although, it's kind of of hard to see in that video. But I did love his response via Twitter to the whole situation:

"To the lady who pulled me off the stage and into the pit tonight: if I ever see you on a stage... keep your wits about ya. Love, Darren :) !"

"btw I'm lucky I didn't hit my head on the gate in front of this lady. Seriously close call tonight... Like, please don't kill me. I'm nice."

As far as Mr. Scorsese, very hit and miss with me.  The hits would certainly be Taxi Driver and The King Of Comedy (even though that one is not perfect).  The misses would be New York, New York, Cape Fear, and many others.  As to Good Fellas, I've seen it once and would not know if it was good or bad as I thought the violence was so disgusting that it automatically put it in the loathsome category for me.

Of course, those with long memories for film history will remember that the same week that New York, New York opened in New York, New York, another film, very low-budget, opened, too, and in several of the reviews for that low-budget film New York, New York was invoked and not in a good way in comparison to the low-budget film.

Quote
There was one "lady" who came up to the window of the truck. She was dressed in a very smart, black business suit, and she had a roller bag...

"Excuse me, I have to catch a train back to Philadelphia... Could I cut in line?"

The rest of the story goes downhill from there, however, at the first request i would have said fine or i'm sorry i don't have the time to spare.  I've done so many a time or offered if the person behind me seems rushed.  i have also made similar requests, though not with so many people in line.

Great choice, BK!

Well, this weekend is Olympia's Capital City Pride (http://capitalcitypride.net/) weekend!  AND the special guest performer during today's festivities is Olympia's very own Broadway baby, Shoshana Bean (http://capitalcitypride.net/schedule/main-stage-entertainment-schedule/)!

BUT I have to usher for a local production of Honk! (http://wcpa.squarespace.com/upcoming-events/2011/6/3/honk-the-ugly-duckling-musical.html) and the VERY MOMENT that Shoshana is performing. :P

I didn't specifically ask to usher at this performance.  They just assigned this time to me.  I didn't know.

Darn.

So, I have to try to find a good parking place but Honk! is playing in the theater right next to the park where Shoshana is performing, so I don't think that I'll be able to park too close.  So, I have to leave as soon as I can.

Have a good day, all!

Of course, those with long memories for film history will remember that the same week that New York, New York opened in New York, New York, another film, very low-budget, opened, too, and in several of the reviews for that low-budget film New York, New York was invoked and not in a good way in comparison to the low-budget film.

What was the movie?

We are back from a delightful family day in Dayton.  We went to the open house for paramedic grads at Sinclair Community College and were quite impressed with Rob's instructors.  From there we went to the Dayton location of one of Rob and Mary Linda's favorite restaurants - The Melting Pot.  It's a fondue place - we had the luncheon special and I ate more dessert than I've had in a long time.  We stopped at Dayton Mall, where Richard and I wanted to look at a chair Macy's had advertised and Rob needed to get a new watch battery.  Richard and I ended up buying 2 new chairs for the family room - matching mission style recliners that will coordinate nicely with the couch.  Tried to make a stop for Mary Linda at Merle Norman, but they'd closed half an hour before we got there.

DR MBarnum - Sounds like you had a great time last night. And Congrats to Noor!

Did they go out to a restaurant for the party? Or did Noor's parents prepare a homemade Iraqi feast?

It was held at a vintage home in a desireable neighborhood in south salem, the home of a lady who works at the school Noor and Ali go to. The teachers and office staff of that school have totally gone out of their way to assist and support Noor and Ali...it is just amazing. A lot of tears were shed when Noor read a speech she prepared for the party.

Noor's mom, Maisa (who was a shool teacher in Baghdad...until a Taliban goon shot someone right in front of her one day, and so she decided to call it quits), cooked the food...she should totally open her own restaurnat, I swear!! I don't think she stopped crying the entire party!!

Was out early this morning to get an oil change at Jiffy Lube...it took 2 hours...so much for the "Jiffy" part of their name.

Actually, the oil change took 1 hour (still way too long...usually I am in and out in about 20 minutes, tops)...but they also needed to change a belt, but when they got the belt off (they had to remove several other belts to get to the worn belt) they discovered they did not have that belt in stock. The computer system listed it as a different belt. So the manager guy had to go to a store to get the correct belt.

Today I went out to lunch with a friend.  I probably shouldn't have done it, because I am really suffering now, but it is over and done.  However, my sister is now very unhappy with me because i was able to go out to lunch, but that I can't go to her grandson's semi-pro football game this evening.

Now, there are two major differences in my mind.  First of all, lunch is at 12 Noon, and the football game is at 6:00 p.m.  By six p.m. I am already settled in for the night AND I have already taken my pain pill.  The second difference is that lunch is inside and I am seated in a comfortable chair.  At the game I would be outside and sitting on hard steel bleachers.

So, for the moment, I am the black sheep of the family.

I am very happy to know, lunch out or not, DR TCB is not outside at a football game sitting on cold hard bleachers.

At the same time I can understand why his sister doesn't realize & relates it to his seeing a friend today.  Instead of resting during the day when there was an important event in the evening she would run around during the day causing her to cancel.  Of course those she canceled on weren't always happy because she should have known better.

There has got to be, at least, one in every cast.  That is why I am looking for a good one-man show.  That way I have no one to blame but myself.

Speaking of crazy, I did something slightly crazy today.

There were free pony rides for the kids today. And there was this huge bouncy slide. When I saw it I wished that I could go on it. It looked fun.

Anyhow beforehand my sister had said there is no way she would let me 2 year old niece go on it. But when we got there Jadie really wanted to go on it. So I went with her (she went down on my lap).

Wow, it was fun. Although my back and legs are hurting. It is very steep. And the first 2 times I basically carried her up. I didn't think she'd be able to get up the bouncy little steps.

She loved it.I think there may even be a video. :)

Yes, slowly. I still have not gone swimming yet. But i'd say i'm at around 70%. I was able to go with my nieces and run around and i wasn't tired at all. So that is good.

Very good indeed!

a video would be fun to see. :)

It was a very steep slide. And to walk up there is this bouncy thing in the middle with tiny bouncy steps and a pulley on one side. It is very steep at the top. The first 2 times i sort of dragged my niece up. The 3rd time i let her crawl up. But she couldn't do the last 10 feet. Too steep.

I screamed the whole way down. But it wasn't as scary as the sledding!

And our guest star for the Kander and Ebb show is - Gregory Harrison.  He'll be doing a Steel Pier song, but not one he sang in that show.

Don't put that on the site, BK.  DR MBarnum will begin crawling to LA the minute he reads that post.

It's not his grandson, it's her's. That's his grandnephew. There's no reason if he's feeling poorly she should be offended.

you are missing the point which i believe tcb gets.  she feels lunch with a friend was more important than being with family, which really wasn't why he missed the game.

Touching story.

No, Jane, a touching story was that video you posted from Korea's Got Talent.

Was out early this morning to get an oil change at Jiffy Lube...it took 2 hours...so much for the "Jiffy" part of their name.

You probably should have had them look at your car while you were there.

No, the time and place of the game had been TBA, but I had warned her that I probably would not be able to make a 6:00 p.m. game.

RE: DR Elmore's question about commercials.

Do most people still watch them?  I record almost everything, so I watch very few.  And even if i'm going to watch something "live" i usually start 10 minutes late so i don't have to wait.

Jennifer, not everyone has that luxury.

As for Death Takes A Holiday...

Tonight was just their third preview, and for a third preview, the show - well, at least the physical production - is in good shape. A nice set, some sumptuous costumes, and good lighting and sound design. Otherwise...

It was definitely the third preview. There are still a few numbers that need orchestrating... Some pages of script still settling in... And some staging issues to be worked out. Otherwise...

It's all going to be about "Tone", and how the character of Death is introduced in the show - and to the audience. There are some wonderful moments in the first 15 minutes of the show. Alas, each time a new section started, it seemed like a different show was starting. More precisely, a different type of show was starting. I'm not that familiar with the original play and it's initial stage and movie incarnations, but some of the bits of humor just seem a bit too broad and/or to come out of nowhere. Otherwise...

I did like the show. It was great to see and hear Julian Ovenden in person for the first time. Jill Paice is quite wonderful, and she handles the practical marathon of material beautifully. And they're both supported by an abundantly talented ensemble - which includes Michael Siberry, Don Stephenson, Rebecca Luker, Linda Balgord, Mara Davi, Max von Essen and Matt Cavenaugh.

It's most definitely a Maury Yeston score - more in his Titanic mode with a dash of Nine here and there. And one number that could have been a trunk song from Grand Hotel - but in a good way.

If it turns out I'm able to see the show again later in the run, I'd definitely like to check it out again.

DR elmore - Larry Hochman has done some sumptuous and smart work for his pit of 10 players: Violin, Cello, Bass, two Wind players (with Bassoon!), Trumpet, French Horn, Percussion and two Keyboards (with Kevin Stites playing/conducting).

And Rebecca sends her love. :)

DR Jennifer - Aren't most slides on the "steep" side? ;) -And I'm guessing since it was a bouncy slide, it couldn't have been that steep. -Or maybe slides just seem steeper to grown-ups?

I need to get to bed. It turns out I may be going to the Tony Awards rehearsal in the morning - which means I might have to be at The Beacon Theatre by 9:30am... -I'll be getting a call at 8:00 if it all works out. So...

Goodnight.

Very nice closing night performances and an audience that responded to everything.....closing night is the night my late friend Ernie had season tickets - and his wife was sitting in the front row.....so that was difficult for me at moments here and there.....but she was laughing and applauding and in general enjoying herself.....which was nice.

Darn.

Shoshana Bean is from Beaverton, Oregon.

She was born in Olympia, Washington, then she lived in Oregon...and some of her extended family still live in the area.

Well, when I went to work concessions at Honk today, I saw on the Pride events schedule that Shoshana Bean was performing at 2:00.  Honk was starting at 2:00.  I thought that I could go see her perform for a while, since I didn't need to be at concessions while the show was going on, so I left when it started (with permission from the house manager).  I get to the park (literally, half a block from the theater) and a recent local cast of Rent was just starting to sing some songs from the show.

???

After a couple of songs, one of the actors introduced the group and said that they'd continue with the pre-show.  Pre-show??  They performed for an hour and Shoshana didn't come on until about 3:00...just when I figured that I had to get back for the intermission.  Intermission didn't actually start for another 20 minutes!  So, by the time intermission was over, the second act started and I was done, I only got to see Shoshana's last song. :P
