Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a little tony, and now it is time for you to post until the award-winning cows come home.

And here is my rather long rant but I believe it rings true why I don't care for the Tony awards show anymore

Tony's past glory is when they paid tributes during the show.

1) Tribute to the Gershwin from the Uris Theater which was then renamed the Gershwin
2) All the shows that played the Imperial theater
3) The year Sondheim, Herman and Kander/Ebb were nominated and the evening was filled with excerpts from their shows
4) Another year Cy Coleman, Jule Styne and Lloyd Webber. At the end the composers came out and number from a future show were performed. Don't remember what Lloyd Webber did, but Coleman did Hey You In The Back Row from 13 Weeks To Broadwhich (closed on the road) Jule Styne show was Treasure Island called I believe Rainbow High or something like that. George Hearn sang and that show play somewhere in Canada and disappeared basically after that.
5) Fifty years of the Tony Awards where every year was represented even if it was just for a moment
6) 25 years of the Tonys. With many of the original performers singing show from their shows.
7) The wonderful tribute to the late Robert Preston where Barbar Cook and Bernadette Peters sang and Mary Martin talked songs from the shows they did together.
8) Jennifer Holiday and I'm Am Telling You I'm Not Going for me one of the greatest moments
9) The years that Angela Lansbury was the host. For me the last time the show had class. a great moment was her and Beatrice Arthur did Bosom Buddies together with the original choreography!
10) The years where they attempted to do moments from the Best Play nominees. It didn't always work seeing the moments taken out of context but their were valiant tries and sometimes the only chance to see something from those plays.
11) When the shows were done from Broadway house. The last show I remember was done on The Sunset Blvd mansion set. Highlights Michele Lee and Robert Morse singing a song (really a moment) from How To Succeed before presenting an award. Carol Burnett presenting an award and telling the audience that the producers wouldn't allow her to come down the staircase for her entrance.
12) The year from the Shubert theater and A Chorus Line won. They did the opening and closing number from the show which was also the opening closing number from the Broadcast.
13) The year where the 5 best musicals that were still running running on Broadway at the same time presented musical numbers. (A Chorus Line, Annie, Ain't Misbehavin, Sweeney Todd and Evita. (The last time something like this happened)
14) Any time Dorothy Loudon was on the show. (Loved her)
15) Despite being a terrible show I liked that MERLIN was represented by their opening number and I believe Merlin is the only musical nominee (for the longest time) never to receive a cast album recording. BK recorded one song from the show Beyond My Wildest Dreams (With the late and wonderful Michelle Nicastro

2004 was the last time I sat watched the show, although have little memory of (And I went on line to check) the years that  Titanic,  Fosse, Contact and Hairspray won.

And all those wonderful performers who are actual performers. With great actors and singers who were some of the best there every where. No jukebox musicals. No visible microphones. No performers to gear to the 20 something demographics.

Good morning, all! 6:30 came far too early and I am not happpy about it. In another hour I will be out the door, headed for 23rd and Park.

I had another night of peculiar dreams, one of which concerned my British friend Dominic McHugh and somne recording work - I think the wonderful Marilyn Caskey may have been it the dream as well - and one about waiting forever in a train station; my former Barnes & Noble boss Patty was in that dream.

Wen I get back from the McGlinnventory, i have to deal with some EILEEN recording issues, and NAP!

I have very little to say about last night's awards. I posted it all during the broadcast. I enjoyed it immensely and I'm happy some friends won.

I think this is a particularly poor excuse to not care about watching; you were certainly hanging on with questions after the event last night. Your rant's all about a thriving Broadway with stars that is no more and a lot of that nostalgia is for some awful moments of Tony broadcasting.  Watch and learn. You wrote a play this year? Want it to do more than get readings in your area?

Times, tastes, producers and networks change. And with those changes come demands about programming, length and other unpleasant necessities of broadcasting life. I would bet that the early Tony broadcasts lasted longer than now because of fewer commercial breaks. In your rant about things you miss, I can only respondby saying that the theatre of 20 years ago was a much healthier beast thantoday's poor commercial showing.

When I was living outside New York, I watched to catch the excerpts from shows I might like to see - the SPIDERMAN excerpt actually made me think I might want to see it - and I never particularly cared about much of what you miss from past broadcasts.

Monday morning greetings!  Up early to start getting the house ready for 1) delivery of our new chairs and 2) the arrival of my cousin from GA.  Both will occur later in the week (chairs on Thursday, cousin on Wednesday), but there's a lot to do.  And I'm having lunch today with Dear Niece/Goddaughter Lauren.

Time to head out.

Mr Wiener is all over the news again this morning. His career has crashed and burned almost as quickly as the Hindenberg.

Speaking of screwed up men, where was our DR MBarnum last night? Was he too busy sexting messages to various Tony Awards performers and winners? I knew that lube job this week would get him all worked up and put his panties in a bunch.

I always like to see the numbers from the musicals.....from the past, I guess my favorites included:

BLOOD BROTHERS - some DR's heads just exploded, I know
DREAMGIRLS
ANNIE
NINE
JCS

And seeing some of the people whose names I had read on the LP's.

DR Ginny - The Beacon is at 74th and Broadway. And, actually, it can just look like a movie theater - which it was. -It does have some ornate touches on it's facade, but most of the real beauty of the theater is on the inside. It underwent a multi-month, multi-million dollar renovation back in 2009.

Here's a brief HISTORY (http://www.beacontheatre.com/about/history.html) of the Theatre.

And here are some pictures of The Beacon BEFORE (http://www.beacontheatre.com/restoration.html) and AFTER (http://www.beacontheatre.com/restored.html) the theatre.

TOD:

Last night's broadcast was hit or miss for me, but there were more hits than misses this year.  For one thing, holding it in the Bacon was a welcome change from the Radio City Music Auditorium--I did not miss the screeching teen fans.  And NPH was a very enjoyable host.

And speaking of NPH, I was pleasantly surprised by how much I liked the COMPANY number.  NPH has become my favorite Robert since Dean Jones.  And it was nice to see the other parts cast with appropriately aged performers.  The choreography was fun (though I would have liked to have seen the duo moments with more challenging bits.)  My only major gripe was that the cityscape background was to flashy and overwhelming for the number.  I look forward to seeing the filmed NYP performance.

What I detested about last night's broadcast:  the design and Best Score awards being given out during the commercial breaks.  I hate the idea that the Theatre Wing claims that this is a night to celebrate its participants but then kowtows to the League of Producers (or whatever they're called) who demand that time is given over to performances of stinkers that were not nominated (or not even in the running like SPIDER-MAN.)

Favorite moments from the past:

Jennifer Holiday's "And I'm Telling You I'm Not Going"
Little Daisy Eagan tearful acceptance of her Best Actress award for SECRET GARDEN
Whatever year it was when Linda Lavin won for Broadway Bound and it seemed that every winner gave absolutely wonderful acceptance speeches

There's a lot more that I'm not thinking of right now...

I was in the Beacon in the 80s as well before the restoration. Vito Russo, a great Gay historian wrote a book called The Celluloid Closet (a history of LGBT people in the movies) and he did presentations around the country based on the book. He did one in the Beacon and I was there. He was great friends with Lily Tomlin. He died from complications of AIDS in 1990. He is missed.

Loved the opening number last night and also the Jackman/Harris duet.

Overall, I thought it was a much more entertaining show than they've had the last few years.

As far as past shows are concerned, there is a 3-disc set DVD (Broadway's Lost Treasures) available of musical numbers from past Tony Shows, which is a "must have" for everybody on this forum.

In regard to the merits of Tony Award presentations of the past, I sometimes allow my own nostalgia to think they were better than they actually were.  I've managed over the years to record every single broadcast since 1983 and to acquire copies of just about every other showing since '68.  When I occasionally pull these out for a viewing I'm surprised by what I see.  What I usually recall as a well-behaved audience full of decorum was actually a crowd of grumpy people who look resentful at being forced to come into the theatre district on a Sunday night.  There were hosts such as Henry Fonda in full conservative mode.  Run-on acceptance speeches that make you fully understand the implementation of the 90 second rule. Years when CBS began forcing producer Alex Cohen to use performers from its stable of TV stars.  Performances of Best Musical nominees that were little more than filmed collages of bits from the shows.  It definitely was not always magical back then.

But yeah, there were moments like Angela Lansbury and Bea Arthur doing "Bosom Buddies".

DR Michael S - As for your "rant". Well...

"4) Another year Cy Coleman, Jule Styne and Lloyd Webber. George Hearn sang and that show play somewhere in Canada and disappeared basically after that."

I think I got the gist of this "point", but since it's all composed of too many sentence fragments and missing punctuation, well... By the way:
-The title of the Cy Coleman song is "You There in the Back Row".
-"Rainbow High" is from Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber's Evita.
-The Jule Styne/Susan Birkenhead musical based on "Treasure Island" was called Pieces of Eight. Yes, it did star George Hearn, and it played The Citadel Theatre in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada at the end of 1985.

*****

10) The years where they attempted to do moments from the Best Play nominees. It didn't always work seeing the moments taken out of context but their were valiant tries and sometimes the only chance to see something from those plays.

-So, you liked seeing those Best Play segments not work?

******

And all those wonderful performers who are actual performers. With great actors and singers who were some of the best there every where. No jukebox musicals. No visible microphones. No performers to gear to the 20 something demographics.

-When was the last time you saw a Broadway show on Broadway? You can't properly judge and gauge the current crop of Broadway Actors if you haven't seen any of them. Being exposed to some of them via bk's recordings is not the same thing.
-I bet a good chunk of your favorite Tony moments took place when you were a "20 something".

I still cringe when I think of the Into to Woods segment. -Which was made a bit more cringe-worthy since they did not let Bernadette Peters (very briefly) reprise her role as The Witch for the ceremony. Instead we got Mrs. Huxtable. ::)

BK, it's funny, in the notes you say that you thought the shows chose good numbers. But yet you still tear them apart. :)

I actually think that for the most part the shows DID NOT choose the right numbers.  I think that the Book of Mormon song was great. And have not seen the show. But I would have liked to see a group number.

Why didn't Catch Me If you Can do a number with the lead? I found that so odd.

Also i think it's important to showcase those actors who are nominated for awards. I think that Anything Goes did that best with Sutton Foster. She was nominated. She was the star of that number. She won. So people could see why.

DR Jennifer - Most of the groups numbers in The Book of Mormon would have ended up being bleeped-out left and right. And it was nice that they featured Andrew - who was nominated.

And the number from Catch Me If You Can did feature a lead, Norbert Leo Butz - who was nominated and won. -And they even opened with Aaron Tveit - the main lead - who was not nominated.

And when Signature Theatre presented their bit of Into the Woods at the Helen Hayes Awards back in 1995, it was based on that clip/montage. However, it was done without the aid of any pre-recorded clips. And since it was live, I still remember some of the outrageous keyboard programming I had to deal with due to the way the it was edited musically.

I, too have memories of past Tony Awards (and Oscarcasts, for that matter) which are likely more gilded than they actually were.  But "OH!"...what memories!

I saw Preston and Martin do a number from "I Do! I Do!"  Perhaps it would look archaic today, but it was magical then.  I remember seeing Lansbury win her Tonys for "Dear World" and "Sweeney Todd" and being happy she won.

My favorite moment, like DR Michael Shayne, was the absolutely electrifying "And I Am Telling You" by Jennifer Holliday.  I had no expectations when I watched that Tony show.  I'd heard of the nominees but knew nothing about "Dream Girls".   I remember standing up well before it was over and my entire body was covered with chillblains.   I've never had a more electrifying TV moment.

Our good memories are golden because they brought us pleasure.   Because we have those memories, they color our perceptions of things we see today...and many times, the newer things come up somewhat "lacking" in the memory-making department.  Of course, a single number on a Tony show does not represent an entire work...and I'm certain we all realize that.  Still, it's the lasting impression many of us get about that show.

Vacuuming - Done!
Packing - Done... Almost! ;)

*I actually don't have much to pack here in the apartment. I sort of mis-judged and planned when and how to take down my "stuff", so I'll be back up this weekend and next for basically a day to fetch more of said "stuff" out of my storage unit.

If you'd ever seen the late Geraldine Page in public, you'd have taken her for a dirty, smelly homeless bag lady. Trust me. She'd arrive at the theatre looking like she was there to clean the bathrooms.

Performances of Best Musical nominees that were little more than filmed collages of bits from the shows.  It definitely was not always magical back then.

I still cringe when I think of the Into to Woods segment. -Which was made a bit more cringe-worthy since they did not let Bernadette Peters (very briefly) reprise her role as The Witch for the ceremony. Instead we got Mrs. Huxtable. ::)

Yep--that was one of the clip jobs I was thinking of when I wrote that.

Mr Schaffer srikes again. When I was scoring ASSASSINS for Signature, I had to deviate from the published score and follow thngs on the cast recording. Neither the brightest bulb in the lamp nor a possessor of great ingenuity.

Favorite Tony moments of course include the already mentioned "Grand Hotel" and "On the 20th Century" numbers. But I also remember loving, for the sheer weirdness of it all, a scene from "Nicholas Nickleby" as presented by Susan Anton, Dorothy Loudon, Sandy Duncan and Tom Wopat!

DR Ron Pulliam - Very well said.

-And where were what did you do this past weekend?

I slept in on Saturday!  I had a nice long telephone conversation with an old friend.   I watched some Warner Archive discs..."A Stolen Life" and "Fog Over Frisco".

I fired up my newly refurbished (new heating element) electric grill and cooked a rib-eye steak, grilled a potato and two ears of corn, and later BBQ'ed a rack of ribs for my Sunday munching.

Yesterday, I chatted with my mom, watched the season finale of "Glee" on my DVR, and, because of a brief (an hour or so) power outage, began reading a new book -- Armistead Maupin's "Mary Ann in Autumn."   The book was so engrossing, I read it through to the end, a couple of hours after power was restored.

Happily, Maupin has left the door open (WIDE open) for a sequel.   I think it demands a sequel, actually.  Lots of true "Tales of the City" moments with surprising twists and turns, including one very upsetting one.

I recorded the Tony show...flipping back and forth between it and a mini-Frasier marathon on another channel, but one featuring a few favorite episodes.    I'll watch the complete Tony show when I transfer it to my HDD recorder.

I also putzed around ironing some shirts and getting ready for work today.

And you?

I only knew Vito well the last couple of years of his life and during that period, when he was working on the Men's Chorus concert, he was a little pissed at Ms Tomlin for her refusal to come out. We had asked him if she might do a guest appearance. I think at the time she was being difficult about the film of CELLULOID CLOSET. Their friendship went back some ways, and I wouldn't be surprised if he isn't the referenced Vito.

Vito also had the filmed footage of Bette Midler's act at the Continental Baths, and I wonder where tha is now. When he got too ill to leave his apartment, we'd talk on the phone. My last memory of him is getting him free house seats for the Rosemary Harris revival of HAY FEVER.

I see there's a documentary being made about him.

Jennifer: I did think the numbers were well chosen, which is not always the case - and they were shown complete, which is not always the case.  That doesn't mean I liked all the numbers and that is what I wrote about.  I didn't knock all of them - I liked The Scottsboro Boys a LOT and it was as good as many of the classic numbers that have been presented on the Tonys over the years.  It's all one person's opinion - some like, some don't.

As to past broadcasts - none of them are perfect, but many contain astonishing moments.  Prior to last night, I remember few astonishing moments in the last decade - I'm sure there may have been one or two but I don't remember what they might have been.

One friend of mine loved the Blood Brothers CD (I forget which version) and another hated the CD.  In 1993, they went to NYC with a group and they both went to see Blood Brothers.  The one who loved the CD hated the show and the one who hated the CD loved the show.

Go figure.

He's playing on Facebook today. I think he's posting deep thoughts from the Dalai Lama or swooning over Bollywood; I don't see much change in his expression.

I also enjoyed the Tony party last night.  It would be nice if everybody could see the broadcast at the same time, but we managed.  Now I have some curiosity about the Beacon - how have I managed not even to notice it on my many bus and cab rides along that stretch of Broadway?

What a gorgeous theater.

Another Monday morning without a Tony win for me.  And I was sure I would get one this year.  Oh well.

I voted for you! Best Mayor Shinn I've seen in years; the actor in the Strohman revival was terrible.

That was the problem!  I voted for you in the "Play" category for NEVER TOO LATE.  Sorry, Jrand, it looks like we split your votes.

TOD

And here is my rather long rant but I believe it rings true why I don't care for the Tony awards show anymore

Tony's past glory is when they paid tributes during the show.

1) Tribute to the Gershwin from the Uris Theater which was then renamed the Gershwin
2) All the shows that played the Imperial theater
3) The year Sondheim, Herman and Kander/Ebb were nominated and the evening was filled with excerpts from their shows
4) Another year Cy Coleman, Jule Styne and Lloyd Webber. At the end the composers came out and number from a future show were performed. Don't remember what Lloyd Webber did, but Coleman did Hey You In The Back Row....

Didn't Patti LuPone sing that one?

I missed both the Tonys and the HHW bash last night.

I got involved working on a project that I have been  very lax in moving forward on, and I didn't want to stop. Normally when I begin working on this, or other projects I need to be working on, I get distracted by ther inerweb or the television machine. This time I just couldn't let that happen.

And if you should not hear or see much of me in the future, it is only because I am actully getting down to seriously working on these  things.

That said, I do always enjoy the Tonys. I only began watching  them after joining up with HHW, and I have never found a thing to complain about with regards to the program...same goes with the Emmys and the Oscars.

Oh, wait...one complaint about all 3 (especially the Oscars) is that they have begun, over the last  several years, to do a pretty poor job on the "in memorium." The Oscars, at least, used to show many more dead people then they do now. I mean, people I knew were even included back some years ago, rather then just the "best knowns."

DR Druxy mentioned those Broadway's Lost Treasures dvds and I always wondered if the rumor was true that the initial shipments of Volume One (supposedly recalled) actually did contain Holliday's "And I'm Not Telling You" and "Turkey Lurkey Time".

And Florence Henderson's Fanny.

Well...

Somehow, when I booked my travel last night, I ended up booking a 3:00 Bolt Bus from DC to NYC instead of the other way around. Of course, I didn't realize that until I called Bolt Bus at 3:30 asking about the status of the 3:00 bus, only to be told there was no 3:00 bus scheduled. Then when I checked my confirmation email... SPOO!! -And that the next available Bolt Bus would not be until 5:30.

Thankfully, there are a couple of bus lines that pick-up and drop-off on this same corner, so I was able to book myself on the DC2NY  - going from NY to DC -bus at 4:30, which is where I'm posting this post from now.

*And since I had used Bolt Bus Rewards to book that original ticket, I'm not out any money either (even thought I did forfeit that awards trip). All's well that ends well, I guess.

I saw it once (Blood Brothers), and as predicted, my head exploded. I will say that the friend who was with me LOVED, LOVED, LOVED IT and cried and cried. I cried also, but not for the same reasons.

One friend of mine loved the Blood Brothers CD (I forget which version) and another hated the CD.  In 1993, they went to NYC with a group and they both went to see Blood Brothers.  The one who loved the CD hated the show and the one who hated the CD loved the show.

Go figure.

;)

I was obsessed with the cd and when I saw the show in toronto I was definitely not as impressed.

BK, in all fairness to Daniel Radcliffe, I don't think you can hold it against him that he was cast as  Harry Potter.  And he seems to be trying to pay his dues in the business.  He did EQUUS both in the West End and on Broadway, before he ever took the stage in HOW TO SUCCEED.  He got some very nice reviews for EQUUS, and my friends who saw it, thought he was terrific.  Also, if I am going to shell out $100.00 to see one of my lesser favorite musicals; I would certainly prefer to see Mr Radcliffe than Matthew Broderick.

I'd much rather see Matthew Broderick (and I did).

I went swimming this morning for the first time in a month. Thankfully there were some pretty slow swimmers in the fast lane. When i got to the pool there were 3 people in the fast lane. And they were all way slower than me ... even not feeling perfect.

The sad thing is that with me not feeling 100% and swimming breast stroke, I was still faster than all 3 of the swimmers doing front crawl. These people were really way too slow for the fast lane.

Then 2 other men came. One is older and he can swim a bit faster than me/almost the same. But he only does 2 lengths and then stops. The other man, who was probably a bit faster than me said he was tired just doing 2 lengths. So i wasn't holding him back.

After 10 minutes i was pretty tired. And after 30 minutes i was more tired than i usually am after 1 hour. But surprisingly after the 30 minutes it became easier. And i did 50 minutes. And i was less tired after 50 minutes than i was after 10 minutes!

It will  certainly be handy when I go to Los Angeles....first thing I will say to my phone is, "Antonio Sabato Jr." and see where it takes me.

I hope it takes you right into a stalking charge.  Isn't he about 40 years too young for you?

My entire upper left arm looks as if it has been tattooed a deep purple.  It begins just below the shoulder seem of my top all the way down to just above the crease in my elbow, the solid part anyway.  The bruising continues a little below my elbow.  Every time I look at it I'm shocked.  Craig was somewhat horrified and said I need to go back to the doctor.  Keith & I think it is to be expected.

Sorry if that is TMI but it is a post. ;)

KSL, which was the CBS affiliate in SLC when I was growing up but which has since become the NBC affiliate, and which is owned by the Mormon Church, has just announced they will not be broadcasting NBC's new series THE PLAYBOY CLUB this fall.  Strangely, they are still fully committed to broadcasting SMASH.  ;)

What is there that is offensive about SMASH, other than it starring the new Lucy?

I liked the Tonys.  I haven't seen any of the shows this year and I really enjoyed it.  I would like to go to New York sometime this year and since I no longer have the income I used to, I'll have to choose only a couple shows to see. I may pick something I wouldn't have considered after watching the show last night

I shall now be on my way to the Alex Theater to see Bat Boy.  Since I didn't really care for it much in its off-B'way version, I can't imagine I'm going to love it at the Alex.

Oy.  We may be losing our second set of tenants.  I swear to heaven these people should not be signing leases.

In better news, I got a huge package o'DVDs from a vintage TV guy MBarnum recommended to me.  I watched a couple episodes of the short-lived WAY OUT series from 1961, a TWILIGHT ZONE knockoff starring Roald Dahl, and I am currently watching the affiliate presentation from NBC for the 1960-61 season.  It's fun.

Greetings from Fairfax, Virginia!

My bus got in on time. I only had to wait 5 minutes at McPherson Square for an Orange Line train out to Vienna. And my brother stopped at Wendy's on the way back to his place. So far, so good. ;)

Is it time for your annual buffing again? ;)

Since I will be going to NYC in April, I should have watched the Tonys so that I could see what might be running at that time.

Whatever, I do hope there are some fun plays/musicals to see when I get there.

Well, by next April you'll have a whole new crop of shows to pick from. By that time, I'm guessing How To Succeed... will be closed - unless they find another major box-office draw to replace Daniel Radcliffe. And I'm suspecting that Priscilla and Sister Act may be closed by then too. Anything Goes just announced an extension into 2012. As for The Book of Mormon, well, they just raised their ticket prices.

War Horse could still be running by next April too. Alas, most of the current "hit" plays are just limited runs.

But, in the meantime, I'm sure we'll be keeping you posted. ;)

Thanks, I'm just amazed by the statistics.   They think the force of the river is cutting the channel deeper, so that may lessen the flood, but it's also spreading out.   They have closed part of I-29 and may close it all the way from Sioux City to Omaha - close to 90 miles.  We'll see. The current detour is such a bear, if I have to go to Omaha, I'll take 2 lane roads through Nebraska

We really are in the wait and see phase now.  They are still filling sandbags, but these are more of a stockpile because no one expects the levees to hold 100 percent and they'll need some to fill any holes that pop up.   A levee broke in the very southern part of the state near Missouri and one town will have 10 feet of water.  Yikes

I enjoyed the Tonys a lot last night.  Still the best Awards show on TV.  I think Elmore, Dan (the Man), and Jose all make valid points about it being a different time and different circumstances and that memory can be kind and that we can either wallow in disgruntled nostalgia for "the good old days" or we can move with the times and accept their realities and many of their own very good qualities.    And, if you confess to not having sat and watched a show since 2004, do you really have the right to complain that the quality isn't good as before?  One cannot watch because they've lost interest or "the thrill is gone", but I think it unfair to condemn something as not being as good as it once was unless one has actually watched it.
