Well, you've read the notes, the notes crowed, and now it is time for you to post until the crowing cows come home - they're currently looking for the cock, who seems to be MIA.

Morning all.
That is all.

One does wonder if shayne will ever bother responding to emails or bother to do what he said he'd do, yes one wonders, but one is getting quite bored with wondering.
-
And before he tries to say he never got the emails, perhaps he should check his spam folder. Then again, I think he's received them.
-
Sorry to have been so otherwise occupied lately. Got several days to catch up on.
And I'm off to Maryland in a couple of hours for a family gathering. Likely more travel time than actual gathering, so I'm looking forward to seeing the family, even though not looking forward to the ride getting there.

Good morning, all! I slept late and caught up on all the sleep I needed, and today is mostly a housecleaning day. I'm still putting things away - I would kill for one more room! - and the apartment needs dusting. I will walk down to the Lincoln Center library around 11:30, and that's my day.
I have little else to report at the moment. More coffee!

I think the four greatest Off-Broadway musicals were the following:
THE FANTASTICKS
THE GOLDEN APPLE
THE THREEPENNY OPERA
ONCE UPON A MATTRESS
One notch down:
EARNEST IN LOVE
OIL CITY SYMPHONY
DAMES AT SEA
LITTLE MARY SUNSHINE
PROMENADE
BIRDS OF PARADISE
HOWARD CRABTREE'A WHOOP-DE-DOO
HAIR
Revues:
DECLINE AND FALL OF THE ENTIRE WORLD
JACQUES BREL IS ALIVE AND WELL AND LIVING IN PARIS
The most mediocre ones (IMHO):
THE AMOROUS FLEA
ALL IN LOVE
Plays:
GREATER TUNA
THE HOUSE OF BLUE LEAVES
ULYSSES IN NIGHT TOWN (the one I most wish I'd seen)

I'm going to the dentist this afternoon at 5:30.

How could I have forgotten LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS? The Orpheum production was brilliant!
I also forgot TORCH SONG TRILOGY, and the original production of RECKLESS at the Circle Rep!
For the nadir of Off-Broadway, I'd have to say RUTHLESS.

Dealng with CAMELOT drama.....oh well.....not unexpected.
Why would someone TURN DOWN a role in a show they auditioned for and said they would accept "another role" other than that they listed......do they think that increases their chances of being cast in a LARGER role next time?

oh well

Tuesday morning greetings! I'm meeting today with the senior citizen center development director to share my research progress with her. Then a little grocery shopping and a lot of puttering here at home to get ready for my cousin's arrival tomorrow and the carpet cleaning/furniture delivery on Thursday.
-
Good morning. The alarm on my new cell phone doesn't always go off. Today would be an example of that.
-
TOD - haven't seen very much off-Broadway, but I did enjoy the Mint Theatre's Walking Down Broadway and Richard and I liked Irish Rep's Around the World in 80 Days.
-
There is one off-Broadway musical I have been curious about for years, and if anyone has an old soundboard recording, you'd be my favorite person. It was called SMITH and it starred Don Murray as a man whose life kept turning into a musical. The reason it has intrigued me is that IIRC it was rather successful off-Broadway and it shuttered for a few weeks with the intention of moving to Broadway (it never reopened, not sure why). I was a kid in NYC during those few weeks and one of my Uncles knew someone either in or with (as in producing) the show and I had a standing invitation to come down and see them rehearse, which like an idiot, I didn't do. I've wondered about that show ever since.
-
The cocks still crow. Even in the city, you can still hear cocks crow occasionally.
-
It looks like perhaps I misremembered--SMITH evidently was Broadway, it must have been trying to move to a bigger theater. It was at the Eden.
-
Well, I'm officially confused. The Eden is listed as being off-Bway and yet SMITH is listed on the Broadway database, not the off-Broadway database.

Check out Martin Gottfried's wonderful book A THEATRE DIVIDED and OPENING NIGHTS. He liked SMITH enormously.

The Eden was an Off-Broadway theatre. It began as part of the Yiddish Theatre and it's now a multi-plex movie theatre.

I had two big opportunities that year that I just discarded--one was going to see SMITH in rehearsals and the other was to be a go-fer on a Movie of the Week that was filming in Central Park. I was really stupid. Instead I "got" to talk to Gerry Page and Rip Torn courtesy of my insane Uncle and also went to lunch with Harrison Starr, also courtesy of my insane uncle. ;)

What I remember most about Harrison Starr was his Jewfro, which was really quite immense. As well as his advice not to go into acting, to stick to writing. He actually looked over some of my writing that day and was complimentary, but of course my insane uncle was sitting there menacingly. :)

DR JMK, glad you got your DVDs and glad that you are enjoying them. There are some on that list that I need to get...one of these days.
Right now I am contemplating buying a dvd of a 1950s Malaysian movie about a giant rock that devours people. It sounds good.
-
I saw these most of these in small local theaters.
-
Oh, no, MBarnum! We have LOTS of big rocks in the desert! That would give me nightmares!

Well, DR Jose, my hope is that Hugh Jackman, Brian D'Arcy James, and/or Tom Wopat will be appearing on stage when I am there.

TOD: Forever Plaid. And if it ever played at an off-Broadway theater, Lucky Stiff. And No Way to Treat a Lady. And How the Other Half Loves.
Three of your shows were Off-Broadway, although FOREVER PLAID, as I recall, was a cabaret show that never went into an Off-Broadwy house. Didn't it play at Palssons, triad, whatever it was called then?
How the Other Half Loves, as I recall, was on Broadway.
-
I saw these most of these in small local theaters.
Only DR MBarnum, a man of discerning taste and extreme devotion to cinematic art, would find a film about a people-eating rock interesting.
I almost vomited on the ground typing this post.

There are a couple of Castrecl posters that drive me up the wall with their stupidity. I have a difficult time suffering fools with patience. Some of these posters dealing with the Tony Awards, who don't work in the professional theatre, have all the answers. I feel it would be similar if I decided to go to a medical conference and critique methods of surgery.

Yes, I seemed to remember it was downtown. One of my Uncles lived on W. 11th between 5th and 6th and my other Uncle was up on E. 17th at the time (I think maybe I was staying with him that time).

I believe Grease and The Best Little Whorehouse In Texas also started there and were both classified as Broadway houses

Well, I'm back from Disneyland in which I waved at BK as I drove passed his 'hood on the 101 at about 11:00am yesterday.

TOD: I love most of the shows already mentioned. Did "Romance/Romance" start off Broadway? I enjoyed quite a few songs from that and found the production charming.
"Nunsense" always makes me laugh, even if the score is uneven.
The various editions of "Forbidden Broadway" are also hilarious.

I'm association the Eden with either OH, CALCUTTA or LET MY PEOPLE COME.
I just checked. It was OH, CALCUTTA. A sort-of cousin of mine was a member of the cast in the late 70's.

Was it Private Ryan?
-
Last cast member has his music and all is well, Gardenia-wise. Funnily, this fellow didn't know one of the songs I'd chosen for him - they included I Don't Remember You/Sometimes A Day Goes By, Isn't It Better, and Second Chance.
-
I don't know from DR DtM's photo.
Don't know much about Off Broadway - although we saw NUNSENSE at the Douglas Fairbanks Jr Theatre, I think....which may have been Off Broadway.
-
Well....the show is cast....and awaiting acceptances from a few people who are on vacation, but whom I am sure will accept their parts.
OTH - two dumb asses turned down roles. Even though they checked on their audition sheets that they would accept a role other than that they preferred.
One young man who is a very good singer, but a terrible actor - was offered the part of Sir Lionel....and he said no thanks, since that's a non singing part with no lines - I don't know what version of Camelot he has been reading.....and I had also planned to use him in FIE ON GOODNESS and maybe as the singing Herald at the beginning of "Guenevere" - so his part goes to someone else, and I hope he isn't planning on auditioning for me again....after all I don't do shows just so he can "work on his singing and acting" niether of which he did when he was in MAN OF LA MANCHA....too busy texting.
Another gentleman declined the role of DAP - which would have included participation in several numbers.....fine....see ya!
-
Dealng with CAMELOT drama.....oh well.....not unexpected.
Why would someone TURN DOWN a role in a show they auditioned for and said they would accept "another role" other than that they listed......do they think that increases their chances of being cast in a LARGER role next time?
Perhaps, after reading the role more thoroughly, they felt they were not right for it?
Or, maybe not.
???
What is it that Spencer Tracy said?
Paraphrasing:
"I could never be a director. I couldn't work with actors. They'd drive me crazy."
::)
-
Tracy was right. My guess DR DRUXY is neither of them ever thought of reading the script - they probably watched the movie.
-
The good news is that 4 of the 6 one-person plays that I published on Amazon a couple months ago are selling regularly and well.
Even Clara Bow, which I figured would sell the least amount of copies.
:)
The puzzling news is that the two plays that, I thought, would attract the most attention (i.e. Orson Welles and Errol Flynn) have had no action thus far at all.
???
I guess one never can tell what will/will not sell.
-
Tracy was right. My guess DR DRUXY is neither of them ever thought of reading the script - they probably watched the movie.
Which sucked!

Tracy was right. My guess DR DRUXY is neither of them ever thought of reading the script - they probably watched the movie.
Perhaps Putnam County Playhouse "board of directors" (?) should establish a policy for ALL who audition and check the box that says they'll accept parts other than those for which they've expressed a desire to perform...a policy that says, "Refusal to accept a part offered to you will bar you from auditioning for the next XX productions."
In other words, take it seriously or take your butt out of here and stop bothering serious folks.

I don't know from DR DtM's photo.
Don't know much about Off Broadway - although we saw NUNSENSE at the Douglas Fairbanks Jr Theatre, I think....which may have been Off Broadway.
The Douglas Fairbanks was, indeed, an Off-Broadway theatre at 440 W. 42nd Street. It was torn down, along with the John Houseman, in 2005. One of the original plans in 2005 was to build a permanent home for Cirque du Soleil but that did not sit well with the community who objected to the destruction of small Off-Broadway houses and rehearsal and class spaces only to have them replaced with a huge office complex/theatre subsized by the taxpayers. The developers were to receive tax credits and all sorts of options to build the theatre for a company that was (and still is) doing quite well financially. They didn't need our help to build a theatre for themselves. So the lot sat empty for quite a while until they built a 60 story building with mixed housing (80/20 meaning 80 percent market rate and 20 percent subsidized housing) and a hotel. I don't know if any performance space is in the new building.
I saw When Pigs Fly at the old Douglas Fairbanks.

It was indeed Off-Broadway at the Westside Arts, 43rd and 9th Avenue. I saw it and loved it: great projections of New York, and a wonderful 3-person cast. It was directed by Steve Sondheim's close personal friend, Jimmy Hammerstein, Oscar's son and brother of William, whom I never met. Jimmy's son Andy Hammerstein is a friend of mine and author of a new book about the family.

Topic of the Day: if you're talking about off-Broadway plays and musicals that we've actually seen off-Broadway, then I haven't. Unless you include STOMP, which I did see in Greenwich Village in 1995, but it's not really a "play" or a "musical." If you're talking about cast recordings of off-Broadway productions, then I'll say:
Dames At Sea
The Fantasticks
Forbidden Broadway (in all its iterations)
Howard Crabtree's When Pigs Fly
Howard Crabtree's Whoop-De-Doo
Little Shop of Horrors
Lucky Stiff
No Way to Treat a Lady
Nunsense
Oil City Symphony
The Threepenny Opera
Tuscaloosa's Calling Me, But I'm Not Going
and mentioned by Elmore:
Ruthless (L.A. is off-Broadway, right? ;))
And many others.
-
RUTHLESS played Off-Broadway in New York, DR George, with Sylvia Milesand Lorraine Serabian.

BK - I'm still on the bus. I'll respond once I'm not in a couple of minutes.
-
Good Morning! Good Afternoon! Good Evening!
I'm up, I'm up... And I got my key fob/security card from Arena Stage earlier today! :)
I guess you are hired!
And I picked a good day to come in: Free Staff Lunch Day!

They are now running. Last week they were still falling down when they walked.

I believe (A Book of Mormon reference) I took 27 photos to get those 6.

Awwwwwww!

My book group is having a Shakespeare roundtable this week (every reads a different work by the Bard) and my selection is AS YOU LIKE IT. I'm listening to a recording with Vanessa Redgrave as Rosalind - on to Act II!
-
Which kitten do you want, DR Elmore?
-
Which kitten do you want, DR Elmore?
Any of them. I am partial to the yellow ones, though.
-
Cute kittens, Laura!! ;D
-
The 7-11 is probably a mile from here and yet I am using their wireless.
-
And I'm off the bus.
And I've followed up with bk.
And I just discovered that Frances McDormand's Jean Jacket now his it's own TWITTER ACCOUNT (https://twitter.com/#!/McDsJeanJacket)! ;D
-
One of the 1960 shows I watched last night was THE TAB HUNTER SHOW. It started with him getting mauled by a young woman in a car, whom he ditched, walking up to another house and then picking up a relationship with Mary Tyler Moore.
-
DR Laura - Are all of those kittens from the same litter?
-
Yes.
-
In line with today's topic, are any New Yorkers (or anyone else) planning on seeing Silence, the Musical?
-
Mom is a tortie. They can have anything.
-
Yes, those kittens are adorable, DR Laura!
-
I think we've found a show I could do, Kevin!

Sounds good!

Cats?
-
I had a doctor's appointment today. My doctor moved a couple of years ago --he's now over 30 miles away. I guess I should switch doctors.
-
I think we've found a show I could do, Kevin!
Cats?
Why couldn't I have thought of that?!
-

I'm hoping I can somehow get up to see it somehow during the run of Oklahoma!. A couple members of the cast have been posting pics from the first day of rehearsal via Twitter today.
And I'm guessing you saw this photo gallery from today's Meet and Greet on Broadway.com (http://www.broadway.com/shows/silence-the-musical/photos/brent-barrett-co-make-some-noise-at-silence-the-musical-meet-and-greet/).
-
My spaghetti was quite deelish. I've got a couple of new books to read and a little tv to watch.
DR Ginny, you should have watched the BBC Shkespeare AS YOU LIKE IT with Helen Mirren. Or the one from the Globe, which I haven't seen. It's one of my least favorite Shakespeare comedies. Give me TWELFTH NIGHT!

Yes, I just saw it. And since I'm a big fan of Lucia Spina, I really have to see the show.
-
Where is TCB? I hope he's okay.
-
I thought you were kidding about "Silence, the Musical."
-
I reviewed all the Globe BDs.

DR Elmore - I picked AS YOU LIKE IT because it was the only Shakespeare audio available at the Dayton Metro Library branch that I frequent. There's a lot of build-up in the first 2 acts, but nothing much seems to have happened. On to Act III...
-
Had a lively work session with John Boswell, and he's on track with all the material for the Gardenia show. We really only had to do a handful of arranging things.
-

You can hear some of the songs and find other info about the show at this site.

Then I had a nice telephonic conversation with dear reader Jose, and I'm happy to announce that he'll be musical directing the Lost In Boston show at LACC.
-
Great news about DR Jose's LACC gig!
-
Congratulations, DR Jose! BK, I forget--when will the show take place?
-
I thought it was a joke -- you know, like it is silent in the theater for 2.5 hours.
-
Congrats to Jose for his LA gig!
-
Which kitten do you want, DR Elmore?
I was expecting more than awwww ;) The top one is a cutie.
-
Will it be one night only, BK? When will it be?
-
I thought it was a joke -- you know, like it is silent in the theater for 2.5 hours.
Does anyone remember reading that a movie theater overseas once played The Sound of Music without the songs?

LOL!!!!!!!!

Thank You, bk! -I'm already planning which food trucks and restaurants I'm going to hit while I'm out there. ;)
-
Where is TCB? I hope he's okay.
I know. The first thing I did when I opened HHW this evening was to see if he was here.
-
Thank You, DRs Ginny, KevinH, Laura and Jane!
-
I'm annoyed at my mail carrier. As I mentioned I went to the doctor, so I was home in the early afternoon. There was no mail at that time. I went down to get my mail at about 5:30 and there was a slip showing I have a package to pick up (from Kritzerland, as a matter of fact). The mailman/mailwoman obviously didn't even check to see if I were home--just assumed I wasn't, apparently.
-
For those asking, we open on November 30th and play six performances between then and December 3. A combo platter of evenings and matinees. And I'm sure we'll take Jose on a few dining adventures while he's here. Very excited to have him involved in this.
And in another Jose/BK connection, I've hired our What If choreographer Cheryl Baxter to do a little work on the LA episodes of the web series. Adam Cates is involved in the NY episodes.

I'm a fan of jean jackets & some can be rather dressy, maybe not Tony award dressy but still rather nice. I'm not sure if the dress was improved or not by that jacket. :o

I thought it was a joke -- you know, like it is silent in the theater for 2.5 hours.
One interesting tidbit about the show: It's still technically an "unauthorized" adaptation of the movie and original book.* And I'm still not sure how they're able to do it without some sort of court injunction coming down on them.
*I think.

How annoying. Have you decided to look for a doctor closer to home?

I'm thinking about it!

I hope that doesn't happen! Maybe I'd better go to one of the early shows.

It's time for me to say Goodnight... so, Goodnight!

I'm off to my parents' house for dinner...spaghetti. :)
Be back later.

T.O.D.
THE FANTASTICKS
LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS
-
I hope you had a good day, TCB.
-
Thank you George, for capturing my millstone.
-
And the word of the day is: ORISON!
I believe DR Druxy wrote a one-man play about him.
-
One does wonder if shayne will ever bother responding to emails or bother to do what he said he'd do, yes one wonders, but one is getting quite bored with wondering.
Did I miss something?
-
Hi DR TCB. Were you able to go to work today?
-
Congrats to DR Jose!! sounds like fun
-
Every time I see your quote, Cillaliz, I think, "Yeah, but they're not YOUR things."
-
Dealng with CAMELOT drama.....oh well.....not unexpected.
Why would someone TURN DOWN a role in a show they auditioned for and said they would accept "another role" other than that they listed......do they think that increases their chances of being cast in a LARGER role next time?
My biggest complaint when I direct a show. At the very beginning of auditions, I explain that I will not hold it againt them, if they are only interested in certain roles. I beg them to tell me! Still, they all say, "Oh I will take any role you offer Mr. CB. Then they turn around and drop out because they weren't cast in the role that they wanted. AAARRRRGGGGHHHHH!
-
G'night!
-
Good night, TCB. I hope you have a good day tomorrow.
-
Every time I see your quote, Cillaliz, I think, "Yeah, but they're not YOUR things."
I think - "If they are just things, why did they spend $10 million in Dakota Dunes alone trying to protect them?"
-
'night
-
Laura, do the kittens have names?
-
I changed my quote. I was tired of that one
-
I guess you can tell that we've had a LOT of foster kittens when it gets to the point we don't have names right away.
I expect we will have then named in a couple of days.
-
I have finished AS YOU LIKE IT and must agree with DR Elmore that it's not my favorite Shakespeare comedy. Just as when I was taking a Shakespeare course in college, I would not have gotten through just reading - listening helped a great deal. Forty years ago, I'd go to the listening lab in the library and use LPs and huge headsets. Tonight, I used a 2-CD version and the Sennheiser earphones that I bought at Tekserve in NYC.
-
And now, to bed - 'night!
-
Congratulations Jose
I'm Sure You Won't Be LOST IN L.A.
-
Thank You, DR Cillaliz and DR ArnoldMBrockman.
-
Congratulations Jose
I'm Sure You Won't Be LOST IN L.A.
Hmmm... But "LOST IN L.A." could be the title of a new cabaret act... Hmmm... ::)
-
And...
Since I'm already feeling a bit sleepy after all of today's events - I got up at 8:30, was out the door at 9:15, then spent seven hours at Arena Stage practicing and prepping...
And since I also think I'm a bit sleep-deprived after the past couple of days...
And since I have one of those "tired headaches"...
Well..
Goodnight.
-
Sleep well, Jose.

Great story showing the water coming out of the Gavins Point Dam. It would fill 1.1 Million Gallon Jugs every second!

;D
-
Sounds like everyone has been having a super cool time.
;)
-
Vibes :) and love :-* from this errant and truant person.
-
Spent a couple of days feeling sorry for myself. The guy and I broke up twice last week. So we are now on an extended break. We'll see if either of us calls first.
Someone with 20 yrs in AA should not be in love with a practicing drinker.
We are from the same world but from different planets in life.
I really had a good time, it will and is deeply missed. :'(
-
Aww, Sam. I'm sorry.
-
Looking forward to bk's booksigning Saturday. Will drive in from Ventura to Glendale for the day, hope it's not too hot.
It's very foggy here right now, and cool.
Starting to get to know all the regulars that hang out on Main St., I'm trying to walk everyday.
Would like to take off another 10 lbs. Get down to 115 for my small frame would be perfect.
-
Thanks Laura. :)
We had such a good time together, it was fun.
-
I was by myself from June 2002 (when my husband passed away) till March of this year. I'll be ok alone.
The bad thing about Ventura is that it really is a bar town.
The good thing about Ventura is that the AA meeting is across the street from me.
And it has a really good looking man .
-
Must go, need to get this phone call.
Mega vibes for everyone.
Lots of love.
-
Finished with my viewing for the evening.

I love As You Like It. I read it in the seventh grade and it was the play that turned me on to Shakespeare in a serious, never-look-back way. I had read Romeo and Juliet in the second grade and had no problem with the language. I grew up in a household that still reads the King James Bible, so the verbiage of a previous generation is not that far away.
Still, I picked up As You Like It a few years later and never looked back. I loved the comedy then and still thrill at the scene when all declare their misbegotten love, with Rosalind ending with "And I for no woman."
I wish I could take you back to the early 1970s and a life that has been differently lived since then so you could understand what that kind of comic mayhem would cause.
It also helped that the year I read the play, I discovered a free Shakespeare in the Park that was presenting As You Like, Macbeth (which I also read that year because it was short) and Measure for Measure, which I hadn't read. The free part intrigued my parents, and we continued to go throughout my high school and some of my college years. They loved it, but they would never go without me. Somehow that made me sad.
-
Sam, am truly sorry. Vibes for a healthier match next time.
-
Am sad to say I think I discovered the cause of the high blood sugar (after the steroid and corn-soaked medicines). It's a lack of exercise. I swam twice yesterday and had the lowest blood sugar reading I've had so far, despite breaking the diet and having some nicities like fresh pineapple and coconut water.
I swam for more than an hour today plus some time in the ocean and some time in the hot tub. Let's see what tomorrow's readings bring.
