Title: A SOW'S EAR
Post by: bk on July 08, 2011, 12:21:57 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were both a silk purse and a sow's ear, as well as a sheep's eye and a licorice tooth, and now it's time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to make a silk purse out of a cow's ear and a licorice tooth and are not having much luck.

Good morning, all! I am back to the weird dreams; last night's biggie was a cross between "Last Train from Gunn Hill" and "Tale of Two Cities," which began on a subway in Manhattan and ended up in the French Revolution and a search. I honestly couldn't tell you if the subway ran from Manhattan to France, or if I boarded in London, On the plus side, there were no guillotines and no bloodshed.

In another hour I leave for my barber appointment and I'll stop at the Post office in Radio City on my way back. After that, I've got more proofreading, and that's my day.

TOD:
DVD:  Duchess of Duke Street, discs 2&3, Catch Me If You Can, which I've never seen
CD: Knickerbocker Holiday, Guy Haines, Catch Me If You Can, Tales of Hoffmann, La Cocarde de Mimi Pinson
  VCR: cheap trash

DR FJL, thanks for the reading.

It was a very strange dream. One thing I forgot to mention was that I (think I was!) in Paris to find someone, but I have no idea to what end. It was certainly no Sydney Carton-Charless Darnay rescue.

I have returned from the barber and it's nice to have short hair again. I no longer look like an aging Bozo the Clown. The Radio City post office has two automated postal machines, and the one I used was clearly on its last legs. By the time I had obtained and paid for postage to mail two of my three packages, three customers had successfully used the other one.

It's good to be home!

TOD:

DVD:
THE FREEDOM RIDERS, which is a fascinating documetary about a group of black and white "agitators," as the Gov. of Alabama referred to them, who pursued a nonviolent act of civil disobedience by travelling on interstate busses from the north on down through the south. Once the busses were in the south each bus was required by state laws to separate black and white riders. However those in these groups continued to sit all mixed together in both the "colored" and "whites only" sections of the busses, as well as congregating in the "white race only" sections of the bus terminals.

They were met by brutal beatings wherein the KKK and others literally beat the heck out of both men and women who were on the busses and by months end over 300 Freedom Riders were jailed, despite the fact that they not once fought back, as this was to be a totally nonviolent protest.

It was amazing. And the documentary had interviews with many of the participants, witnesses, and newsmen who were coving the story at the time.

Some people just feel better if they have someone or some  group to hate, or they are just so fearful of those who believe, look, or worship differently.

What really gets me are the amount of Gay friends I have who are very prejudiced against Hispanics and I have Jewish friends who constantly show hate towards Muslims or anyone Arabic.

You would think that those who are part of an oft discriminated against class would show more compassion, but evidently that is not the case.

The hate literature on Obama from what I consider the extreme crazy side of the Republican Party during the last election was horrifying; it was encouraging some fool who believed their bullshit to pull an assassination attempt.

I just don't get it.  How can people feel and act that violently against others, just because they're different? :'(

What really gets me are the amount of Gay friends I have who are very prejudiced against Hispanics and I have Jewish friends who constantly show hate towards Muslims or anyone Arabic.

You would think that those who are part of an oft discriminated against class would show more compassion, but evidently that is not the case.

Knowing what it felt like to be discriminated against there was a time Jews were known for defending the rights of blacks.  Have you asked why your friends show hate towards anyone Arabic?  Is it that they feel discriminated against first?  I know how that feels.

It is a shame the opportunities for understanding & friendships that are missed by not meeting each new person as an individual vs identifying them with an entire group of people.

More  BIG BROTHER spoilage........................

Ah yes, DR RLP, BIG BROTHER is starting out to be quite fun this season! Interesting that Dick and his daughter still do not speak to each other. Dick is so gross....of course, Danielle does not look so good either, with that black hair, but she is nice enough, I guess. Actually, I think I like her simply because she does not seem to like her father at all.

Very glad that Brendon is back (too bad it has to  be with Rachel in tow) as well as Jeff and Jordan who I can NEVER get too much of....they just make me smile so much. I honestly would watch a show that was just the two of them.

As for the newbies...so far Lawon seems interesting, but the heavy metal guy drove me crazy...I guess the model girl might be intersting, also and that the amazingly horny youth minister should prove to be entertaining.

In honor of DR Jose's opening tonight, I listened to the Christine Andreas OKLAHOMA! in the car this afternoon.

DR Jose - do you have a banjo in your orchestra?  I love it in "The Farmer and the Cowman" and "Oklahoma!" on this recording!

DR Ginny - Yes, we do have a banjo in our orchestra. His name is Phil.

I have not asked them, DR Jane, as they are not close friends...more like aquaintences. It is almost like they are thrilled that Muslims are now the target group to hate in American, and the heat is off Jews for the time being...so they are happy to throw fuel on the Islam fire, so to speak.

My gay friends I have asked, and they just seem to be way to stuck in their prejudices, which is maddening to me. Either that or they are just fooling with me in order to drive me crazy, thinking that it is a very short drive.

But now onto pleasant things.

It is Friday and I will have a private session with an extremely handsome personal trainer this evening. I am certain that it will help me attain some of my goals.

DR MBarnum - Just make sure you're not concentrating too hard on one of your goals during a training session, or, well... You get my drift. ::)

BK, what if the lettering was in silver...like a silver foil overlay?  I would think that the silver color would go well with the blue.  Just a(nother) suggestion.

I was thinking silver (or gold) would work well too. Or maybe something flesh-toned. ;)

Did the four-mile jog and came home to an e-mail that the clean-up phase of Nudie Musical begins this evening.  Apparently they do this on their own, but I told them not to start until I either go there to chat with whoever's doing it, or chat on the phone with him.  That will happen in about an hour, I'm told.

I have a lot to do between now and Sunday.   I'm going back to England and Scotland.  I had been emailing my friends in Scotland about visiting and then heard about a couple of concerts in England----one in Liverpool and one in Gateshead.  I was fortunate to be able to use frequent flyer miles for the flight over, so how could I not go?

If by any chance I had won that meet-Barbra contest, I would have had to have changed my itinerary considerably. But I would have done it!

Just had a nice chat with the boys who'll be doing the clean-up - they sound great and are doing it all the right way - not just turning on some software program, but dealing with each separate problem on a case by case basis.  I told them the most important clean-up is to get rid of the two cue marks at the end of each reel, and to try and clean up the end credits as best as possible.  I think they'll find that most of the light marks are at the heads and tales of the reels.  Their plan is to be done on Monday morning, and then I go in, they put me in a QC room where I watch all the way through on a big plasma TV.  That should be fun.  Anything I see that I may not like, we can then fix - everything they'll have done and that we've done thus far is all saved in a computer.

I was E and T because I was finishing up staining the garage.  Got the last side done, whew!   Now I have to get the deck done.  It's really bad and that's where I want to have the party.  The forecast literally every day between now and the party is rain.  RAIN!  How can I paint a deck in the rain? Tomorrow it's not supposed to rain until evening so I'm going to get up really early and try to tackle the thing in the morning.  It will probably need two coats, but if I can at least get one on I'll be happy

I invited about 35 people to my party next saturday.  I wasn't thinking, just clicking and not really counting all the clicks on names on the email as 2 people, which most of them are.   I've only had a total of 4 people say no. SO, I really have to clean up the back yard and pray that it doesn't rain.   I  also need to really clean the rest of the house, in case it does rain....YIKES!!

I've been pacing myself, actually.  Instead of a marathon staining session, I did one side of the garage every other day.  It was much easier on my body and was only 1 1/2 hours a night.  I would take tomorrow off from working, but the rain forecast really has me worried about getting the deck done.  I never sit out there, so it's dirty, the paint is peeling and I still haven't painted the boards that were replaced last summer.  I also have to figure out how to plug up the knot holes that have fallen out...or the knots have fallen out?  Anyway, a heel could easily get caught and I have friends who always wear heels.

I've gotten about nine pages written and I keep rewriting it. It's more the paper the professor wants than the paper I want to write. What I've gotten out of all this work, however, is a renewed appreciation for Cole Porter's musical gifts. Kern may be the better melodist, and Rodgers, too, but Porter excites in some gut-level way that keeps me going back for more.

Finished with my viewing for the evening.  I wonder how the clean-up session is going.  It's a little unnerving not being there, even if just to see and learn how they do all that, but I gather that this is fairly routine.  I found out today that this same lab did the new West Side Story hi-def transfer for blu-ray, so I think I'm probably in good hands.
