Thursday morning greetings!  Last night my friend Becki came over to the hotel and we had a glass of wine and a nice visit down in the lobby.  She says HI, DR Elmore!  This morning I'm meeting another friend, Andrea, at the Starbucks across the street and then going to the clergy wives' luncheon at the Dunwoody Country Club.  I've tried to contact DR Edisaurus, but have not heard back from her...

TOD: Can't remember much of anything this morning, but I do recall enjoying the courtroom drama "Class Action" (and most anything with Gene Hackman in it) and "The Verdict" from back then. Seems sad to be saying "back then" but I work with someone who doesn't remember the '80s. He's too young. Oy.

Good morning, all! I slept very well until around 3am, when I was suddenly wide awake, pondering a review I've been asked to write, and no amount of tossing and turning wold send m back to sleep. Around 4 am, I decided to hell with it, turned on the light and read for 30 minutes. Naturally, when the 6:30 alarm went off, I had no urge to get out of bed, so I slept in until 8:30. I'll cry tomorrow.

I did have one bizarre dream that I was in the world's lousiest summer theatre program with our DR TCB, at Middletown Ohio's drive-in movie "The Dixie Cruise In,"  and a group of us - TCB, myself, and three other men - got into major trouble for  sending away a truck loaded with scenery and costumes for a production.

I still have laundry to do, and I can finish it by noon. I'd hoped to finish it by now, but such is the case.

Is anyone having problems with Facebook? Last night I got an email that Anastasia Barzee wanted to be my friend, only the friend request has not shown up on my Facebook page. Then, this morning, I was told I had a message, and I could not get the messages to load in. Oy! All I need is to buy a new Mac.

I got to the laundromat to find two women there, who between them, had tied up everyone of the 10 small washers with enormous loads of laundry. The washers were taken, and the folding tables were covered with damp laundry, so I turned around and came home. I'll go back later when these ladies have finished. If I'd used the medium washers and paid $2.00 more, I would then be competing for dryers because they'll have them tied up until they've finished. From the look of things, they're going to be there for at last another hour and a half to two hours. Pisses me off, but that will teach me to wait. My original plan was to be there by 7:30. Damn.

I have made an appt. to talk to the costumer in Indy about CAMELOT......my first choice was completely uninterested in talking to us and started making all kinds of conditions on the telephone and saying such things as: "I'm not sure we even have anything...."

So I said....'You know what, never mind.  You're making this much more complicated than it has to be....I'll go someplace else...*click*."

I then emailed the previous owner of said shop and told her about it....and she said....."Yup, that's the way they do business now....if they do any business...."  Too bad....they used to have some nice stuff.

TOD:
A co-worker of mine was complaining that she could never go to the theater and sit through an entire movie without falling asleep. It didn't matter how good the movie was or how much she'd slept the night before. I asked her if she had ever been able to stay awake for any movie, and she said, "Suspect" so I guess that says a lot for that movie. I liked it too. I was disappointed by "Philadelphia." I think it's because the courtroom dramas on television we've seen, ever since LA Law, and then Law & Order, etc., have been so good that my expectations were too high. John Grisham's "The Jury" was a book I enjoyed very much, so I was really looking forward to the movie, and it was pretty good with a very good cast: Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman, and John Cusak. Funny, it's hard to think of that many courtroom movies - either good or bad - it seems that genre has mostly been made for television.

I, too, have been down to the laundromant again and the laundry is now washing.

I'm having a frustrating day with EILEEN fixes. I don't mind editing and making corrections but I am getting sick of the copyists not checking vocal parts in the vocal score against what they enter into the computer or not looking at credits for who's singing the number according to the original published vocal score. For example. the big act Three chorus, "The Irish Have A Great Day Tonight" is written for the juvenile lead Dinny and the Male Chorus, but the copyist completely ignored this big credit on the first page of the number in the vocal score from which he took the vocal parts, made the chorus Soprano, Alto, Tenor and Bass and totally screwed up the choral writing. So, a week ago, when I sent off the first edits, I really bitched about it. On the last piece of his that I edited, he ignored every bowing mark in the strng parts, not one or two, but every single one of them.

I'm on the second edits now for "The Irish Have A Great Day" and every wrong note I caught in the first edit of the orchestra is corrected, but the vocal parts are still an uncorrected mess, meaning I will have to do a third edit before we can print up the final scores. Oy!

Nope. I'm not trying to entertain anyone, just relating what occurred in them, although I think it's funny my dream included an HHW friend I've never met face to face.

I went down to the laundromat but my clothes are still rinsing, but those damned ladies have got every sorting table piled up with what I swear is six months of cleaned laundry. Jeez!

When my dad's company started making them affluent, my insane mother, who hated, and therefore never did much, housecleaning,  decided that the more dishes, glasses, cups, etc. she prchased meant less time washing dishes. As a result, the kitchen area next to the sink was always piled high as possible with dirty dishes and pans that she would ignore for days. I spent a lot of time after college between 1973 and 1979 washing dishes. I'm surprised that my brothers and I survived our childhoods with no bouts of botulism or E. Coli or worse.

In the old, poor white trash days, when she decided the house needed cleaning - the dust was thick enough to write in or you couldn't win the battle against the roaches - she would decide she was really ill and go to bed. After a couple of days, my Aunt Lois would come down from Columbus and see that my brothers and I were off to school in clean clothes, my Aunts Jenny and Dorothy would show up, and within two-three days the house would be spotless, laundry finished, and every dish cleaned. My mother would get out of bed and decide she was well.

None of this happened when my maternal grandmother was still alive; my mother was too afraid of her mother's censure, and when my grandmother lived with us in the late 1950s and early 1960s - she died in 1962 - she kept the place clean. I still miss my grandmother, but I find I do not miss my mother at all.

My dad should have killed her around 1958 before her madness went over the top around 1970.

The stories about your mother are so sad, Elmore. It's a shame the mental health treatments we have today (though not perfect) were not available then.

I realize that a lot of my temper and inner rage today are still directed more at her than anyone else; it doesn't always help, but it's at least good to know where the short fuse was developed.

It wasn't until after she died that I came to understand and forgive my dad's limitations and to get to know and love him as a person.  I have much more sympathy for him now for marrying an unhappy, narcissistic, mentally unbalanced woman and a lot less sympathy for her for marrying a kind man for all the wrong reasons and then failing every test in marrying and raising a family. She'd always manipulated Macbeth and me to be on her side in her unhappy marriage. By the time Randy was seven or so, I was out of the house and off to college,  Macbeth was graduating from high school and flunking out of college - twice - and my dad was working all over the country to build his company to pay for our educations, and this kept him away for weeks, leaving her home alone with Randy, whom she kept in a pre-adolescent stage; if he were still her baby, I guess she felt she wasn't aging.   She had too much time, too many mental problems, and too little creative activity not to screw Randy up royally. By the time he was in high school he was a mess, and I am very proud of how he turned things around for himself.

DR elmore your grandmother was a lovely lady.  You certainly explained why Macbeth is so easily manipulated by his wife & why Randy doesn't want to make waves.  I can relate to the similar sibling & parental dynamics.  The big difference is all the love & goodness that was in my mother when she wasn't drinking.  I still miss that mother very much.

My grandmother was fantastic, and, since I was the first grandchild, I was her favorite.  Since I spent the first three years of my life living at her house, I remember her rocking me, singing to me, and sewing clothes for me, my brother Macbeth and my cousins.  Some time around the mid-1950s, my uncles and aunts decided she should leave her house and live part-time with each of them, but that proved a disaster, and she ended up living mostly with my parents. After she died in 1962, her spirit stayed at our house though the 1970s when I moved to New York. I would wake in the night to feel she was sitting on the edge of my bed, we could hear her walking about in the attic late in the night, and one night she terrified Macbeth by floating into his bedroom and sending him to sleep on the living room sofa. Thank you, grandma!

A couple nights ago I dreamt I was running outside from an attacker and came across a regional theater troupe performing "Phantom of the Opera" in the middle of a traffic intersection. Their costumes were so low-budget that the phantom was wearing some type of helmet to cover up one eye. And, no, I'm not making this up.

And while courtroom drama wasn't it's "main" purpose, "To Kill A Mockingbird".

Oy, what a morning.  At the rental I saw my yard service who were as appalled as I am at the shape of the yard, then also met with Bathfitter who quoted me what I consider an exorbitant amount to retrofit the downstairs shower, which I rejected, and then with a nice guy who quoted me a very reasonable price for refinishing the hardwoods in the master bedroom, which I approved.

TOD:  Outside of the 80s, outstanding courtroom movies include "Twelve Angry Men" (surely the jury room can be included?) and "Witness for the Prosecution".

And while courtroom drama wasn't it's "main" purpose, "To Kill A Mockingbird".

Ourside of the 80s, I'd also include "Judgment at Nuremberg."

Good Afternoon!

Hairs have been cut.

Lunch has been consumed. -I hit the in-store restaurant at the big Korean supermarket up the road. They really do serve some very fine food at truly rock-bottom prices.

And now...

Well...

I'm eating ice cream. :)

On the Sundance there a  documentary about Nick Nolte.

Interesting conceit is that he is seen interviewing himself. There are the usually talking heads with the actors and directors who have worked with him

But why or why do they interview Ben Stiller? He tries to be funny. He seems to be in all these contemporary documents.

But why or why #2: Barbara Hershey doesn't look like Barbara Hershey.

Back from lunch (BLT-A and potato salad - excellent), and the little two-hour clean-up session which we got done in ninety minutes.  We did everything from the credits to about the twelve-minute mark, so the beginning at least doesn't have many white specks or any kinds of marks - just fairly heavy grain due to smoke and lighting.  I did have a conversation about grain reduction and sharpening - and I'm going back tomorrow to see some test side-by-side comparisons - not where they remove grain, but where they lessen it, and also side-by-side subtle sharpening tests.  I'm just curious to see them.  But the guy I was talking to, who happens to be a huge fan of Nudie, said he likes the grain and the way it looks because that's how he remembers the film.  And that's good to know - but I'm just curious as to what the first twelve minutes of the film would look like with slightly less grain and a touch of sharpening.  I doubt I'll do it, because I really cannot afford to spend one more penny on this, but I'm also just not sure I want to go that route - although, if we WERE going from the lost camera negative it would not have this much grain.  But the first twelve minutes look as good as they're gonna look.  We could do that to the rest of the film, but it would take ten to twenty more hours and it's just not bad enough to spend that kind of dough.

DR CILLA LIZ - it's time for people to stop inviting that friend to ANYTHING....ANYTHING.....as long as she is allowed to do that....she will do it.  YOU have stood up to her....and GOOD FOR YOU!

You should have scratched the other lady's name out......or circled it and charged her 50 cents for her share of the card.

I was pretty shocked that she wrote her name, I think she thought it was a group card or something, but she wasn't even invited, lol.  I let that slide because Mark didn't pass it around until our side of the table had looked at it, laughed about it etc.  He knows where it came from, so it bothered me, but not enough to say something.

Which part of the MRI is giving you panic attacks? For me it was two things. 1)the closed space 2) the loud noise.

I agree with DR Jane. If it's possible get some meds. I wish i had that.

Thanks Jennifer,  It is the enclosed space that bothers me.  I still have linebacker shoudlers, so it is a pretty tight fit.  A lot of my co-workers like rap music, so I am used to loud noise.

On the news tonight, they were showing bits of videos the creepy couple who kidnapped her had made while loking for a victim; you can hear him telling her how to stand, pose, etc. while he pretends to videotape her when he's actually videotaping the kids that catch his fancy. Really gross.

Thinking about this novel keeps reminding me of this poor boy; he gets lost and walks till he asks a stranger for help. He could have asked a person who got him safely home but instead he ended up with his killer. I've just ordered a copy of the novel. I want to read it again now.

Hmmm, I may have to look for that.  I'm also going to order Jaycee Dugard's book.  I'm not interested in the gory details, but that girl went through hell and appears to have come out pretty good.  I'm happy to buy her book and hope she makes millions

I'm tempted to purchase the book for the same reason but will likely pass.  She did settle her $20 million lawsuit.

She should get that.  The parole officers were in and out of that house and never checked out the back yard.  that's outrageous

Too bad that you couldn't get her to sign her name when the check came.

DR Elmore, I once threw out a whole set of dishes rather than wash them.   I should add they were hand me downs from a friend, not a complete set and I hated them, but I did throw them out.   Ever since that time, I've had a dishwasher and it hasn't happened again.  I was young at the time

You just turned 50.  You are still young.

I am told that my DH used to put dirty dishes in a bucket to soak. He never got around to washing them, though.

The friend who invited us to dinner picked up the check for me and Mark the other birthday. That was her plan all along.   On the really bright side, I had a great walleye dinner with a nice pinot grigio

From tonight's news footage, the killer of the 9 year-old Hassidic boy in Broklyn is already having a rough time in jail with the inmates who are ready to kill him for murdering a child. I thought the plan was to pick up everyone's tab, didn't realize it was just the birthday folks.  That extra guest situation isn't as bad then.

Having seen this clip from the Jon Strwart show, it's my belief that Mr and Mrs Bachmann are basing all of their bigotry and homophobia on internal self-loathing. Seriously, Mikey, if Mr Bachmann is not gay and filled with self-denial, I am Marie of Roumania. And that idiot Michelle is Cleopatra Queen of Denial.  I can only hope he's caught cruising a men's room before Michelle's campagn for president becomes a reign of terror. Is she running on a platform of "Keep American Stupid?" Personally, I think congress should pass a "Keep America Intelligent" campaign and deport or execute her.
Aren't you Marie of Roumaina?
