And I'm happy to pre-announce our new title - it's fantastic, actually.  So, check it out and if you want it you know the drill - it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (23.73) via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition double-bill soundtrack – two great scores on one CD, both making their CD debut:

DIVORCE, AMERICAN STYLE
Music Composed and Conducted by Dave Grusin

and

THE ART OF LOVE
Music Composed and Conducted by Cy Coleman

A man drives up into the hills overlooking a Los Angeles suburb.  He pulls out some legal briefs and then a baton and begins conducting as Dave Grusin’s music accompanies shots of upscale houses from which we hear sounds of the endless bickering of unhappy married couples.  Thus begins Divorce, American Style, a classic comedy from 1967 that was a huge hit with audiences and critics.  Written by Robert Kaufman and Norman Lear (who received an Academy Award nomination for their work), and directed by Bud Yorkin (the latter two gentlemen would shortly change the face of television forever with All In The Family), the film stars an incredible cast, including Dick Van Dyke, Debbie Reynolds, Jason Robards, Jr., Jean Simmons, Joe Flynn, Shelley Berman, Tom Bosley, Lee Grant, Martin Gabel, Van Johnson, Lee Grant, and a young Tim Matheson.

The film veers effortlessly between hilarious comedy and drama and tying those elements together into a cohesive whole is the utterly charming, tuneful, and great score by Dave Grusin.  The score to Divorce, American Style is instant classic Grusin right out of the gate.  We get the classical-sounding yet jazzy main title music, we get cool big-band grooves, we get gorgeous 1960s-style romantic music (the kind you always wish was accompanying you in your romantic endeavors), dramatic scoring to lend the film a bit of pathos and depth, a baroque-flavored fugue, a Herb Alpert/Baja Marimba-style Mexican-flavored tune, but all uniquely Grusin – it’s an amazing debut film score.

Divorce, American Style was released on a United Artists LP.  For this first ever CD release, we had the original album masters but happily we also found the original four-track masters and that is what was used for this release.  The sound on the four-tracks was spectacular, and there was even a little bit of music that didn’t make the LP.  Every note of what was on the four-tracks has been used and put where it belongs in the score sequence.  This is our third Dave Grusin CD (the others are A Dry White Season and Mulholland Falls), and it’s a particular thrill to bring his very first film score to CD for the first time, in stunning sound and with all music present and accounted for.

Two years prior to Divorce, American Style, Dick Van Dyke starred in another comedy, this one a frothy farce from director Norman Jewison (in the days when he made frothy farces) and screenwriter/actor Carl Reiner.  The Art Of Love also starred James Garner, Elke Sommer, Angie Dickenson, Carl Reiner, Miiko Taka, and Miss Ethel Merman as Coco La Fontaine (a role that was originally offered to Mae West).  To score the film, Jewison turned to Broadway composer Cy Coleman.  Coleman had already written several songs that had become standards, including “The Best Is Yet To Come” and “Witchcraft” (written with lyricist Carolyn Leigh), as well as two shows for Broadway, Wildcat (starring Lucille Ball), and Little Me (starring Sid Caesar), as well as scoring two films in 1964 – Theodore J. Flicker’s low-budget comedy The Troublemaker, and Universal’s big-budget comedy, Father Goose, starring Cary Grant and Leslie Caron. Coleman’s score for The Art Of Love is tuneful, fun, and filled with his typical gift of melody and rhythm.  It also features a wickedly amusing homage to Mancini’s Peter Gunn, infectious main title music set to great De Patie Freling animation, and romance and comedy in equal doses.

The Art Of Love had an album on Capitol Records, but, in the style of the then-popular Henry Mancini albums, it was a re-recording with Coleman conducting and playing piano, doing all the main themes from the film but in more pop-style arrangements.  However, three tracks on the album were very close to their film counterparts and those three tracks were orchestrated by the great Russ Garcia (The Time Machine).  Since the album was designed more as an easy listening album than a score album, we’ve slightly rearranged the sequence to play more like the film.  This is the first CD release of this delightful score and the original two-track album masters, which were housed in Capitol’s vaults were in pristine condition.

So, here are two wonderful 1960s scores by two very different but equally terrific composers.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price of the CD is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the last week of last week of August – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Now that I have new glasses I may make another change and get a short haircut. I've been thinking about it for a while. I have had the same haircut for over 30 years. I think it's time to face reality and get it cut really short. There isn't a lot on top and it would be easier to maintain if I just cut it all off. We shall see. It won't happen this weekend but maybe next weekend or the weekend after.

Last night I watched a few minutes of the repeat of the finale of SMALLVILLE which was pretty good.

I then watched a CW show called SUPERNATURAL, which I liked quite a bit.  It stars Jensen Ackles and Jared Padalecki - whose names I had only read....but they play brothers in the show, one of whom has been robbed of his soul...just the usual stuff....and they were both pretty good.  I don't know if the show has been renewed, but I may start watching it while I can....

Good morning, all! I slept late because I had the chance. There were strange dreams but I remember none of them now.

Today is a relatively quiet day. I have second edits of the EILEEN third act and appendix to work on so I can send any fixes to London tomorrow. After last week's disastrous Saturday at Toyland, I am not even attempting anything there this morning. I have to listen to the new KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY recording and follow the vocal score, so I may spend a bit of time listening to other Kurt Weill scores as well. Tonight I am meeting my friend Bruce pomahac for dinner and a catch up on his three weeks out of town with various projects.

DR JRand60, I remember our discussion on 1776 from July 4, and I'm still amazed such a wonderful show doesn't meet your approval. I saw most of the the original Broadway cast in August 1969, about five months after it opened, and I remember how stunned I was at the end of the show; I didn't want to leave my seat. I wanted to see it again; that original cast - I did not see the strident Betty Buckley, but her standby Gretchen Cryer - was pretty wonderful. A year later, I saw the national tour, with a flimsy facsimile of Jo Mielziner's original set and a cast that was nearly as wonderful. but the magic of the show at the 46th Street Theatre wasn't there. The one good thing about the film is that Pat Zipprodt got a chance to redesign Martha Jefferson's costume and it's a vast improvement over the Broadway model.

Roundabout, who had for a while a fantastic ability to revive a classic musical and destroy it, actually did a pretty good job with 1778, which I saw Off-Broadway and again in its Broadway transfer, except for the fact that Brent Spiner was no Willam Daniels, Pat Hingle as Franklin was completely unintelligible, and Michael Cumpsty was continually singing under pitch. I also saw William Daniels on Broadway as Egermann the second time I saw A LITTLE NIGHT MUSIC. He was the only really good cast replacement in that production.

So, I have to deal today with the bank; my new debit card continues to be problematic. I am not happy about this.

DR John G, most current translations of Alexandre Dumas, pere and fils, Victor Hugo, Balzac, and other French writers were made in the 19th Century, and anything that was offensive to Victoran American and British readers was expurgated. Most of the Oxford World Classics editions and other reprints of Dumas use these 19th Century editions, sometimes updating the translation but doing little to return to the authors' original text. As a result, the lesbians in THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO are usually modified to the status of just good friends.

I don't know how the 19th Century readers dealt with Zola's novel NANA, one of the great backstage novels - based on the star Hortense Schneider and Offenbach's opera bouffe company at the Theatre des Varieties - filled with such vital interests as prostitution and lesbianism. It sounds just like the original company of BABES IN TOYLAND!

Only Penguin Books, to my knowledge, has been commissioning new translations, and Robin Buss' translation of THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO is really, really excellent. So is the new translation of THE THREE MUSKETEERS.

TOD:  I don't watch a lot of American comedies or comics much these days.  Of the Americans, I really like Patton Oswalt and Ron White.   Now that I've got a region-free DVD player, I've been importing a lot of British comedy, which I love: I've several complete seasons of a show called QI (Quite Interesting), essentially a British panel quiz show that is really just a format (like so many British panel quizzes) for the moderator, in this case, Stephen Fry and a panel of four comedians (Alan Davies being the one constant panelist) to riff on various subjects for a half hour.  It is terribly witty, quick, and smart.  On YouTube I can watch bits of QI also, as well as Mock The Week and Have I Got News For You.  On the BBC, I listen religiously to The News Quiz, The Now Show, Just A Minute, The Unbelieveable Truth, and Sorry, I Haven't A Clue which all feature a host of comics and wits I've come to enjoy like Paul Merton David Mitchell, Sue Perkins, Andy Hamilton, Jack Dee, Fred MacCauley, Jo Brand Graham Norton, Barry Cryer, Tim Brooke-Taylor, and on and on.  David Mitchell is also part of a comedy team that does a sketch show called That Mitchell and Webb Sound on radio and That Mitchell and Webb Look on telly.  I'm also a fan of a British comedian called Al Murray, particularly in his guise as The Pub Landlord.  His show is the only live stand-up show I've ever attended.

From John G:
Quote
I told the waiter I was diabetic and couldn't have the dessert, which was included in the three-course meal. The chef came out, asked about various items on the menu and I ended up with a meal that had no potatoes, polenta or flour, all of which were part of the regular meal. And instead of dessert, a local  cheese platter with five excellent cheeses from Texas.

I can't tell you how good that treatment made me feel.

A few times we have had similar treatment after mentioning we are vegetarians, very rarely though including adjustments for my food allergies.  I can appreciate how nice it felt.

DR Barnum did the storm head your way?  Shortly after I signed off last night we lost our power for several hours.

Yogi was not happy with the thunder, especially with Craig gone.  He didn't eat all his breakfast this morning.  Usually I feed him & leave the room until he is done (he is kind of food aggressive).  This morning when I went back to let him out he wouldn't come & had me follow him to his food.  He hadn't eaten & seemed to want me in the room while he ate half of it.

I hope Craig didn't have a storm last night.

It will be nice when BK wakes up and fixes the posting problems: totday's posts, as DR Ben announced earlier, are showing up as yesterday's on the contents of the "Daily Discussions" page.

I've been listening to the new KNICKERBOCKER HOLIDAY with the vocal score and I am amazed at the number of cuts, 40 bars here, 2 bars there.

Isn't this supposed to be the first complete recording?

I thought the Weill Foundation had control on how his scores are recorded

Jon Cypher, who played Thomas Jefferson in the 1776 national company, used to be my marriage counselor.

My first wife and I were going to a counselor and, at one session, the therapist asked if he could bring in an intern.

That intern was Jon Cypher, who I had actually met 3-4 months before through Howard Keel.

I guess he was going back to school just in case his acting career petered out.

Whether he ever got his counseling certificate, I don't know, because a few months later, he was playing "Peron" in EVITA at the Shubert...and then his film/TV career really took off with HILL STREET BLUES and lots of other stuff.

He also did a very good western with Burt Lancaster, VALDEZ IS COMING.

Anybody know what Jon is doing these days?

Blanche managed to escape the dog run yesterday while I was gone to a gig.  Zach luckily noticed right away and he and Gabe corraled her.  She really is a little troublemaker at times.  We then realized we don't have current address/phone name tags for either of the dogs, so I'll make those today at Freddy's.

Make sure to include at least one cell number.

I'm pleased to hear that Larry's debit card problem has been resolved.

I lost my new Discover card about a week ago. I rarely lose anything, but since it's a credit card I felt I'd better cancel it. I will say that their customer service was very good and I had my new card in just a few days. I was also told that they offer zero liability protection. Given the decline of customer service in general in the past few years, I was pleased and impressed.

Although I like comedies, I find most of them rather lame. I did enjoy AT HOME WITH THE BRAITHWAITES. I also enjoyed THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X.

I appreciate DR Pogue's recommendations. I will certainly try QI, and perhaps some of the others, as well.

I could use some of Cillaliz's tornado energy today. My little apartment could use a THOROUGH cleaning, and I had hoped to do some of that today, as well as some tossing. We'll see. I had trouble getting to sleep again last night, so mega cleaning isn't really in the cards.

Party vibes to Cillaliz. May you have a lovely time.

Jane, look at their registry and see if you can order something off of Amazon.

I might save a little (I've compared a few thing) but then they could end up with duplicates they can't return.  I'm comparing shipping for various items & it doesn't seem as bad as I expected.  I'm not keen on the china options, not that it should matter but I kind of like giving something I like.  I might go with it anyway or a combination of the heavier items.

They are registered at Target & Bed Bath & Beyond.  The china is with Bed, Bath, etc.   I don't see anything at Amazon-oh well.  The shipping isn't bad at $27.97.  I hate that you have to fill in the billing info to find out what the tax is.  I'm surprised I found out the shipping cost up front.

Wow, tax is more than shipping.

Good evening all!   I worked SOOO hard today getting ready for the party.  I had a lot more to do than I realized but it all paid off.  It was a great party. Lots of good food, everyone loved my house and everyone really had a good time.  It was a different kind of party.  Most of the people sat out in the extreme heat.  I had a fan and a guest had a fan so we plugged them in and that helped, but they all wanted to be out there.  There was another group that was having nothing to do with the hot weather, so they all stayed inside.  It was like two different parties and both were fun.

The food was great.   My group of friends all like to cook so pot lucks are great.  The pulled pork went over very well.  The home made cole slaw is almost gone and I have a lot of left overs.  I got the meat and a few other things in the refrigerator right away, so they should all be good

One of my friends helped me do dishes and everything is picked up.  I still have to deal with the coolers that have ice and left over beer, but that will be easy.  All the empties are gone.  I gave the left over wine to some friends who drink lots of wine.  They were thrilled to have it and I won't drink it.  I did keep the unopened bottles.  I can take them to parties.

Everyone genuinely loved my house.  I think the best compliment I got was that it seems comfortable from the minute you walk in the house.
