Title: CABARET 101
Post by: bk on July 18, 2011, 12:01:15 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were a cabaret old chum, and now it is time for you to post until the cabaret cows come home.  They're currently performing at Don't Tell MooMoos.

TOD:

I used to attend a series of Cabaret shows at the Crest Theater in Delray. (Which DR Arnold Brockman also attends) and there many wonderful performers where they performed a two act version of the show. In all the years I attended I think there were many five performaners I did not care for.

I also go a few times a year to The Colony Hotel in West Palm Beach and they have a small room where performers do 70 minute or so show.

Most of them follow Cabaret 101 rules but I still enjoy the shows.

As for their names there are just too many.

We're back from Long Island. I have new glasses and I'm back at the office.

Anthony is recovering from a cold.

It's supposed to be 92 today. It's in the 70s right now.

I'm having iced coffee this morning. I know it's not as good as plain water but I love iced coffee and since it's supposed to be so hot I decided to indulge.

Good morning, all! I was having one peculiar dream involving some sort of reunion and casting a Sondheim revival, so at least two of the folk I can remember from this dream are Victoria Mallory and Stev Sondhem. Beyond that, it's all too vague.

Today, I am off to Toyland to use the office scanner as soon as I finish my coffee. Sooner done, the sooner back, and that makes me very happy.

I have little else to report at the moment, so I'll stop now and check in from Toyland.

I haven't seen as much cabaret as I would like, but nobody was better IMHO than Bobby Short.

When I lived in Sarasota, Ann Morrison from "Merrily We Roll Along" lived there and did several cabaret acts that were also quite wonderful. I remember one song in particular she did that I liked about burning bridges before we crossed them.

I would love to get rid of mosques.  They are most annoying, especially at the local drive in theatre....and on a hot night, you have to keep the windows of the car rolled up.....and outside at night it is very irritating to keep brushing them off your arms...and....

What?......oh.........

Never mind.

Well a couple of years ago, when we were doing a fund raiser for the theatre group.....I put together a cabaret type show.....it was on Valentine's Day......

So I decided to have three couples.....one young, one older, and one OLDER......and chose some lovely songs about love and marriage and relationships.....as the evening went on, each of the relationships grew, changed, and then either ended or continued.....etc.  There were also a few group numbers....including of course It's the Little Things from COMPANY.

WELL.....the director decided he would have ALL of the songs  sung by different people, so that the point of the idea was lost....and the evening was a muddled mess.....

But someday I will do it again - correctly!

I have not seen much cabaret.....but there are a couple of local performers I enjoy very much....Su Ours and David Meek.....and I always attend their show.  Miss Deb Mullins is also very good.

Miss Su Ours did a nice Dorothy Parker evening that included some songs (and readings) that was delightful.

I'm up and have been having a very frustrating morning which I need to be OVER NOW!  I went to send the eBlast only to find it's the one thing I hadn't prepped.  I was sure I had, but no.  So, I had to announce on the FSM board, then hurry and do the eBlast thing and get that out, and then I'd gotten an e-mail from amazon payments about the Kickstarter thing but I can't get into my payments account because my usual password isn't working and I can't figure out what the HELL is going on - so I called and talked to a nice guy but he couldn't help because I have to talk to someone in the payments department - he switched me over to find they don't arrive until seven - so they're supposed to call me at seven - since I doubt that will be happening, I'll probably have to call them back.  It's been like that since I arose at six.  AOL via mac mail is being retarded and won't let me respond to any e-mails, so I have to log on to AOL to do it and that's REALLY annoying.

TOD:
I admit I haven't seen too many caberet shows - mostly I've seen Jason Graae shows repeatedly and always have a perpetual smile on my face throughout the entire show. He's my fav.

Of course, Elaine Strich's show is incredible, even though she's a terrible singer, she's so funny and such a good actress that it makes you not care.

I also enjoyed Barbara Cook's show very much. Considering her age, her voice is amazing. She did one strange thing at the end - she sang the very last song without a mic. We thought she was going to belt out something really incredibly loud and show everyone she could sing without a mic, but instead she sang something really quiet, and we didn't get the POINT of that. We just felt sorry for everyone in the back row who probably couldn't hear the song at all.

Shirley Jones does a very nice one-person show, although you kind of never know what her voice is going to sound like that night. Sometimes she sounds great and other times you think it may be time for her to retire.

Yesterday's Moment of Hilarity Department:  I was taking the boys to the restaurant for dinner and that new Jarreau/Deodato song came on XM and I told the boys how I had spent the morning trying to figure out the lyric.  Gabe, ever the all knowing teenager, informed me he would be able to figure it out, no problem.  And so I asked him what Jarreau was singing.  Unfortunately, it was the intro scat section, and so of course my smart-aleck son turned to me and said, "Dibby dabby nub nub ba-da ba-da."  :)

I adore Bernard Herrmann's score for OBSESSION.  It's wonderful in the movie and on its own. It is bomabastic when it has to be, but it has some lovely melodies.  I wish it were available again.

Perhaps I should know the answer to this, but I don't.

Or, maybe I did, but I've forgotten it.

What's the difference, if any, between a nightclub and a cabaret act?

I saw Sinatra in Vegas, Durante at Melodyland and Tony Newley at Northridge,

Do they count as "cabaret acts"?

Finally got amazon payments on the phone and they reset the password for the kickstarter account and all is well.  Since I only use four passwords online, I find it weird that none of them worked when trying to log on last night.  But it's fine now.  From what I can tell they've collected all but about three hundred bucks of the total amount.  Hopefully the rest will show up today.  Then I can access it in fourteen days.

Back from the lab - very interesting lessons today about de-graining, sharpening, and the resultant artifacts.  I viewed the first twelve minutes of Nudie just to make sure I was happy with the cleanup and I was, so this transfer is now officially done.  The guy who does the grain stuff viewed it with me and he thought it was fine the way it was.

Apparently, AOL did some sort of update a week ago and naturally AOL being AOL completely screwed up their remote servers (which is what mac mail uses) so their servers have been glitching repeatedly, which is why I cannot send mail for the last four hours.  Ridiculous.  I have to log into bloody aol.com every time I need to respond to something.

It's 99 degrees here right now with a dew point of 74 degrees and a heat index of 111 degrees.  The humidity is only 44 %, so that's not bad but it's too hot.  We have an excessive heat warning. I brought some things I can do at home and am staying here.   I am also pretty exhausted and really wasn't feeling well, so being here is much better for me

Hello from rainy Newcastle.  My good weather ended Friday.  It rained a good deal Saturday, though I was inside for two shows so I missed some of that.  And yesterday it was on and off.  I checked into my hotel ---let's just say it's a budget place, but it's clean.  I decided to walk over to the "Sage Gateshead," to pick up my tickets for tomorrow night.  As I started to walk the rain came, so I hopped on a bus.

The "Sage" is a very strange looking building. I'm trying to think of how to describe it--maybe a caterpillar (with a bump on top). I picked up the tickets and took a slow walk back to the center of town (oh, and talked to my sister on the phone--from a "phone box."  I'm glad they still have those here.  My cell phone doesn't work here, so I bought a phone card that you can use overseas).   I had some photos printed at "Boots," the ubiquitous drug stores in the UK.  And I'm writing this from "Pizza Express." They have free wi-fi.  It's in a mall, so I don't know what the weather is like right now.

No show tonight.  When I'm London I'm used to having a choice of shows, but no such luck here.

I think I probably should have waited and come here tomorrow.  That way I would have had one more day in London.

I'm not never overly keen reading on the Nook, plus I'm disappointed in the library selection which the iPad doesn't have at all.  Since the Nook is now mine I put holds on a bunch of library books, most of which have long waiting lists.    Keith downloaded for free HOUSE OF MIRTH for me to begin reading today.   This is the first book downloaded for me that tells me the page I'm on out of the total pages.  I don't like not knowing how far into a book I am.

If I get the hang of this I might begin paying for large books that are heavier than the Nook.

I suppose I shouldn't complain it is only 55 degrees here.  I suppose we need the rain that is making it a cold 53 degrees.    It is better than hot, dry & smokey from wildfires.

We're at a moderate F 66 degrees right now.  The sun is burning through the fog, so it'll probably hit the upper 70s along the Bay...

That's 12 degrees below our forecast low!

We are having strange weather for July.  Tomorrow it is predicted to be about the same & should warm up by Wednesday.

I did not know about this at all! It is very humid here this week. And very hot. But sure how to compare it to the percentages you guys are giving.

On our weather forecast they just say the temperature in celsius. And then underneath it they put the new temperature with the word humidex beside it. So for example tomorrow is going to be something like 33C with a humidex making it 39C.  That is pretty hot for here (that's like 90s++).

Anyway, roasted red pepper, grilled avocado and a delicious artisan sausage made with "beef, pork and bacon," as the ingredients list them. Yeah, halve an avocado, just brush a little olive oil and a tiny bit of salt on each half, and stick them on the grill, peel side down first and then the open faced sided. Do it quickly and it adds a smoky flavor to the avocado.

Any idea who might be performing tomorrow night, Kevin?

I also enjoyed Barbara Cook's show very much. Considering her age, her voice is amazing. She did one strange thing at the end - she sang the very last song without a mic. We thought she was going to belt out something really incredibly loud and show everyone she could sing without a mic, but instead she sang something really quiet, and we didn't get the POINT of that. We just felt sorry for everyone in the back row who probably couldn't hear the song at all.

DR Amy - I love when Barbara Cook does her unamplified encore. That [/i]is[/i] the point of it! It makes people (lean in to) listen. -And if the place she was singing was designed properly, I'm betting her voice carried to the back row.

*On a related note, I still marvel at the fact that Angela Lansbury could be heard over a full orchestra in the Winter Garden during Mame. And then there's Merman, etc.

Shirley Jones does a very nice one-person show, although you kind of never know what her voice is going to sound like that night. Sometimes she sounds great and other times you think it may be time for her to retire.

I just stuck my head out the front door to put some mail out for pick-up and it's hot, humid, and smoggy out there.  Good day to stay inside in the AC!

DR Ginny - When I was Tysons earlier, I noticed that the Vera Bradley store is finally open. -The "laundry bags" are actually kind of cute. ;)

And talking of Cabaret

I've been listening to the 1993 studio recording of Cabaret.

DR ELMOORE orchestrated the four bonus tracks from the film: Mein Herr, Maybe This Time, Money, Money & Tiller Girls

No, I did not score "Maybe This Time." I believe the wonderful conductor John Owen Edwards ochestrated that.

I have not seen/heard as much cabaret as I'd like, and I do usually prefer the more "intimate" venues. That said,

Good Evening!

Well... I somehow ended up spending about six hours at the mall today. I did a lot of window-shopping, a lot of browsing, a lot of walking, some "dreaming", but not a lot of buying. I found myself fascinated(?) by how generally ugly and impractical a lot of today's clothes are. Or something like that.

I often think the same thing about today's women's clothes. I did some fashion design briefly long, long, long ago. But if the stuff in the stores today is what sells, then count me out!

I can't sleep, and this bums me out. It's screwing up both my sleeping pattern and my schedule.

Jose, you know one of the things I miss most about Northern Virginia? Dennis Owens' morning show on WGMS. I do sometimes listen to KUSC, but it's not the same.

DR Jose, that is a nice looking bunch of musicians! And seeing you all countrified ... well, it looks rather good!

I also like the look, especially on DR Jose.

Thank You, DR Jane. -I was kind of surprised at how semi-flattering that shirt (pattern) is on me.

More Brent Barrett news

Now, this one I'd love to see.

At least they're smart enough to cast a lady who dances well for Phyllis, which is more than that idiot Eric Schaefer did for his current production! Caroline's a friend, but I'm not sure she'd be my choice for the role. I do wish her well.

Alas, WGMS 103.5 ceased to exist in 2007 during the whole re-alignment and re-positioning of WETA and WTOP. WETA does use the call letters WGMS for their "repeater" out in Hagerstown, MD, while 103.5 is now the main place on the dial for WTOP (news and traffic).

Then I worked on my Bill (She Gods of Shark Reef) Cord interview.

Now I think it is time to go to bed.

Finished with my viewing - you know you're really overtired when you nod off during a Bourne movie - it only lasted ten minutes, I rewound and watched till the end.

I have no idea why I can't sleep.  I was nearly asleep when I thought that I forgot to put the garbage out...so I got up and took it to the road, garbage day isn't until Wednesday.  By that time I was wide awake.  So i've played cityville and hopefully I can sleep now.   Laters

Well, I'm off to Safeway for some Magnum Ice Cream Bars (http://www.magnumicecream.com/)! ;D

Be back later!

Well, I bought a package of Magnum Classic (http://www.magnumicecream.com/Products/classic-ice-cream-bar/default.aspx) vanilla bean ice cream with milk chocolate.  I wanted either the double caramel or the white chocolate, but the Safeway that I went to was out of both of those.  For all the hype, the classic vanilla with milk chocolate was just okay. :-\ It wasn't "special" at all...IMHO (In My Humble Opinion in Internet lingo).  I still would like to try the double caramel or the white chocolate.  I'm sure that I would enjoy either (or both) of those much more.
