Title: I, FOR ONE
Post by: bk on July 22, 2011, 12:32:27 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes were one for all and all for one, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently reading all the Harry Potter books over again, so there's no telling WHEN they'll be home.

Good morning, all! Yes, indeedy, it's too freakin' hot! I have to go to Toyland this morning for another round with the scanner. Hopefully, the 2nd Entr'Acte will be waiting for me, so I'm taking the original score for that with me so I can edit it there in the A/C.

Last night's dream, which I cannot remember well, featured as its hero our DR FJL, who risked his life to ensure that a power failure provoked by the villains in the dream did not prevent a happy occurrence from happening. I neither remember what the happy event was, nor why the villans wanted to prevent its happening, but I do remember DR FJL and finding reasons to get the owner, manager of a huge hardware store out of the way so we could investigate methods of getting to the power cables, and I remember DR FJL hangign upside down from a fire escape trying to repair things. Who knew, Fred?

So, I will shortly head downtown, where I will hopefully not be too long today. Following that, I'll return here and bask in my poverty, a situation that currently has me feeling unhappy and angry at the world. I told Ron Raines last night that it was the frustration and rage that were taking up too much of my diminishing mental capacities and depressing me. I'll try working out some of that stress by working on my personal projects. God knows I'm not getting any professional projects.

BlueGobo now has a clip posted of the bell ringers from "La Plume de Ma Tante." I'd always wanted to see what the big fuss was about this number and am glad it was filmed. It's charming. No fuss, just simple charm.

In honor of Arnold M. Brockman, I listened to Patrick Williams' fantastic THRESHOLD this morning.  Still think "Side 2" is better than "Side 1" after all of these years.  Pat came out to SLC for some reason when I was in high school and played a concert culled from THRESHOLD which changed my life.  I believe it was held in the auditorium of Cottonwood High, which IIRC is the alma mater of BK's close personal acquaintance Klea Blackhurst.

Last night I watched the extremely disturbing film DESERT FLOWER in preparation for writing a review today.  It's based on the autobiography of supermodel Waris Dirie, and it is a very unsettling look at a very barbaric practice that still is in effect in Africa.

Nothing new to watch this weekend, so I'll probably pull something out of the ol' DVD library.

Actually, I've been watching some pretty good movies from my library this past week, several of which I haven't seen in a decade or more:

QUIZ SHOW
PRIZZI'S HONOR
NIGHT FALLS ON MANHATTAN
LITTLE BIG MAN
STIR OF ECHOES

Last night, I watched THE READER.

All good stuff.

It's been 2.5 hours of hell. I got here at 9am to find my co-worker Marnie, who's doing the printing, in a dither because the power was cutting out every 30-50 seconds and she could not accomplish anything. We spent several hours moving furniture because the super had told me the problem was that everything was plugged into one system of cables to the power. So, I'm now on a computer plugged into a different wiring system, and we've moved the modem to another one. This is absolutely ridiculous and horribly frustrating.

I'm up after a fitful night of sleep, which I am NOT happy about.  At one in the morning, all by its lonesome, the jets in the Jacuzzi went on.  I thought it was someone outside idling his motorcycle.  When I figured out what the sound was, I saw that "spa" was lit up on the remote control in the bedroom.  I pressed the button to turn it off and it would not turn off.  I went outside and tried to turn it off with the button that's IN the Jacuzzi.  That didn't work either.  Just before getting back into bed, I pushed the button in the house and it turned off.  For six minutes, at which point on it went and stayed on all the livelong night.  It's still on.  I woke up at five-thirty because on top of that noise, the sprinklers went on (they're supposed to) - I feel asleep at six and probably would have slept till eleven had the telephonic device not rung with a totally unnecessary call from an idiot who's been asking for one copy of Pirates for the last three days - I've told him repeatedly that if I HAVE one in the emergency stash, I have to find it and that I'd let him know.  So, I'm overtired and when I get like this the chance that I'll get sick rises a lot.  So, I have to try and get some sleep later today and tonight I'm going to bed at eleven.  The Handy Man is on his way to see what he can do about turning these damn jets off.  If he has to he'll shut the pool stuff down at the breaker, but I don't really want that, although it may reset everything and that would be good.  If not, I have to let the business managers of the owner know, and they won't do anything for weeks.  I don't know if the pool man knows about this stuff, and he doesn't come till next Wednesday.

I liked it a lot, as did my friends Sharon and Tamara.  Betty and Nita didn't care much for it and Katie and Marianne hadn't finished it.  Katie might, based on our discussion, but Marianne decided not.

We also watch the episode of MAVERICK where brother Bart made his first appearance.  It was an excellent episode.

I don't know what we shall watch tonight, MAVERICK, WAGON TRAIN, and LAWMAN or PALADIN.

DR Jane, there were 8 of us at book group last night and only 2 had not finished the book.  And, no, it doesn't bother me when not everyone has read the book because sometimes I'm one of 'em!  No one expects the discussion to avoid spoilers and, sometimes, the talk convinces someone who didn't like the book enough to finish it beforehand to do so afterwards

Well, I just spent the last three or so hours being really anal retentive about a piece of music I entered in Finale (the music layout program). Of course, after futzing and fussing, when I went to print it out, the printer ran out of paper right before the last page! I am finally home from what I can only call a morning from hell, which I posted on earlier. After we moved furniture, modems,  and computers around, most of the day went smoothly and we accomplished a lot. All except for the printer/scanner which was stuck in the lousy power system and continued to lose power every 30 seconfs to 15 minutes. It was not a good day, over all.

I am happy to be home, and I'm staying here until Monday morning when I have to go out again to Toyland.

I spent my lunch hour torturing my coworker Monica by showing her trailers for the old Mexican films LITTLE RED RIDING AND THE MONSTERS, PUSS N BOOTS and SANTO VS THE MARTIAN WOMEN.

I felt she should have a knowledge of the film history of her ancestors country of origin.

Here is one of the trailers that she watched:

DR Jane,

Diane Jergens was his wife. 1st one, I think.

Such a cutie! She is now married to singer Randy Sparks.

She was cute.  I looked her up & it seems she did ok with her second marriage.

There is a hilarious thread on JMK's bluray.com about The Egyptian.  The experts there (yeah) have figured out how to tell how many copies of the blu-ray are left by putting 1500 copies in their cart (I am not kidding here) and somehow this has told them that there are only around 1000 copies left.  Nick and I discussed it and we decided it would be a good idea to introduce a little reality into the discussion - SAE has no counters or any way for anyone to figure out what number has been sold of any limited edition.  Period.  But on these people go.  Furthermore, Nick told me it's sold around 1200 units so far.  So, I posted that info and wouldn't you know, no one wants to believe it - you could offer signed affidavits and they wouldn't believe it.  SAE doesn't HAVE 3000 units at this time, they have 2000.  Since there are approximately 800 of that 2000 left, you get a total.  I have now ascertained that it is virtually impossible for anyone on those discussion boards to actually admit they're wrong.  How hard is that?  Lord amighty.  I must jog before I vomit on the ground.

Was Mbarnum asleep on the same fire escape?

Sherlock went to a dog groomer for the first time.  The new pet store has a nice set up in the back without cages.  The dogs go at their appointed times & are picked up after they are done.  He loves to visit there and see his Bernese Mt. Dog friend who is a real sweetheart.  I hope after the bath he is just as excited to visit again.  The groomer commented a number of times, along with examples, of how good he was. :)

My paycheck today was one half my normal check.  I have had so many "stupid leave without pay " days that it worked out to a one wek check instead of one half a month.  I am not sure how I am going to explain this to my landlord, the power company, the credit union (oh I guess they know), the phone company, etc., etc., etc.

Bk, go for a big bowl of chicken soup today for your meal.  Then later have some fruit.  And go to bed early tonight!

Some have settled down and are sleeping. The rest are running around, and when they see each other they growl, yowl, and hiss. If I put one in a shut room (like a bathroom) the yowling is terrible. Sunshine has settled down, as long as no one else tries to get into the kitty hammock she is in. Purrcy is running all over growling. He won't settle down. The quieter ones get growled at and growl back.

I do know to ask, at a teaching hospital, if the doctor will be doing the procedure vs letting a resident do it, especially an unsupervised resident.

TCB is there anyway for you to change your hours so someone can help you get there & back?  I suppose working for the government they won't let you work from home.

Several parts of Social & Helath Services are allowing emplyees to work at home at least two days a week.  Especially those employees, like myself, who do not have any client contact.  Unfortunately, Children's Administration has not jumped on the work at home bandwagon.

It really isn't a problem with the hours, as much as it is my inability to withstand the pain for two days in a row.  That  is why I don't know if I can stand five more weeks of this pain, before I can even talk to the surgeon.  I know that I looked at myself in the mirror today; and I look like Hell (no comment from elmore).

I don't know how this works in the US. But is there not some sort of disability pay you can go in for now since you are in so much pain?

Tom Aldredge has died. I always enjoyed him in "The Sopranos" as well as the original cast recording of "The Nervous Set." And, of course, "Into the Woods."

Got "The Endless Summer" from the library. Don't know if it's mae for so hot a day, but I've always wanted to see this surfer documentary. So, I'm off to watch that.

Night, all

Back from Borders GOOB sale.  40% off BDs, contributed several hundred dollars to our sluggish economy.  :)  Huge line snaked all the way through the equally huge store, but moved rather quickly.

Good Evening!

Well...

I had trouble focusing tonight. Must have been the heat. Or it could have been due to the smell of rotting sewage that started to seep into the theatre midway through Act 1. One of the hazards of working down by the SW Waterfront during the summer. :-\

But...

It was a good show, and we had a great audience.

I just read that news too. :( I still remember seeing Passion the first night he was in for Doctor Tambourri - he had replaced the original actor. It was the night of their originally scheduled Opening Night.

James Marsden knows all about hot tubs.  See "Modern Family" for details.

That was a good episode. :D

She wasn't as appreciate of Mexican cinema as I thought she should be.

Some of those Martians had nice bodies.

I noticed that, too. :)

A co-worker went to the local Borders today and bought some Blu-ray titles.  She also got them at 40% off, but said that they were selling their DVDs at only a 20% discount.  What's that all about??

Alec Clayton (a local theater reviewer...and who liked "The Brain From Planet X"), wrote an article about The best of South Puget Sound theater (http://www.thenewstribune.com//2011/07/22/1754230/the-best-of-south-puget-sound.html?storylink=fb):

My annual selections for Critic’s Choice of the best in community theater in South Puget Sound are selected from performances I have reviewed in this column over the past season. My point in doing this is to acknowledge those who are commendable without making it into a winner-takes-all competition, so in many categories I have chosen more than one person or show.

Among his choices are:

Best Dramatic Actor (male): Christian Carvajal as the professor in “Oleanna,” a Theater Artists Olympia production at Olympia Little Theatre (shared honor) [I'm actually going to see this tomorrow.]

Best Comic Actor (male): Scott C. Brown as Herb in “The Last Schwartz” at Harlequin Productions. It would be a stretch to call “Schwartz” a comedy but Brown’s comic bits were hilarious. Sharing this honor is Christian Doyle as Alferd Packer in Theater Artists Olympia’s “Cannibal the Musical.”

Best Comic Actor (female): In the no-small-roles category, Christine Goode as LiAnne the horse in Theater Artists Olympia’s “Cannibal the Musical.”

Best Comedy: Theater Artists Olympia’s “Cannibal the Musical.”

;D
