Title: DILIGENT

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were diligent, and now it is time for you to post until the diligent cows come home.

Last night I made a post, but the inner web went wonky....and said post did not post....so here is the jist of it:

I just watched CAGED on TCM and Miss Eleanor Parker gives a very fine performance in said motion picture....although its power has been diluted by the many similar themed (and most not so good) women in prison pictures that have followed it....and continue to follow it to this day.

Also doing fine work were Hope Emerson (she and Parker both Oscar nominated in that year of 1950, the year of my birth)....and Betty Garde, Lee Patrick, and Agnes Moorehead.....all are excellent as is Gertrude Hoffman - who a couple of years after this film would create the role of Mrs. Odetts on MY LITTLE MARGIE.

Good morning, all! I am very sleepy today. I stayed up until 1:30 watching the first four parts of the Jennfer Ehle-Colin Firth PRIDE AND PREJUDICE, which I will finish today. At 1:30, even with the A/C  running, the heat was unbearable: the fans kept the side of my body in their proximity quite cool while the remainder sweated profusely. It was neither pretty nor comfortable. Once I did fall asleep, I slept quite well, but I'd rather have stayed in bed all morning.

I have no plans today and I hope it stays that way.

In other news....

During last night's second act, I could tell that I really needed to make sure to go home right after the show, hop in bed, and get some sleep. So that's what I did. -Actually, I could sort of tell that I needed to do that during the first act too. Of the matinee. ;)

Re my trip:  I think I last wrote from Newcastle.    Between rainstorms I walked around Newcastle and then Gateshead, which  you get to by one of many bridges (I think 7), all very close to each other.

I went to a modern art gallery.   I have to say I just don't get it.  When I walked into one of the rooms I was asked to be very careful since the exhibits were very fragile.    I almost mentioned that there was a big plastic garbage bag on the floor, but then I realized that that was one of the pieces of "art."

My friends arrived from Scotland in the late afternoon.  We went to dinner and then to the "Sage Gateshead" for the concert.  When I had booked the tickets the best available were in the front row, which would have been good but for the fact that there were lecterns for the vocalists in case they needed help with the lyrics.   So the show begins and I had good views of everyone but Brent, but I can tell you he had tassels on his shoes.

For the second act I moved down 3 seats to a vacant seat (that I had actually paid for --I had thought my friend from the Netherlands was coming when I bought the tickets).

The show was the same as the previous one---just great!  There was a little glitch.  Anthony Andrews read a long introduction to "They Called the Wind Maria," which all 4 singers were to perform.   I was wondering why the sheet music on the violinists' stands was for "Mimi's Waltz" ( I think that was it) from Gigi.   Well, he finished the introduction and the conductor, John Wilson, stepped up to the microphone and said, "but, before that" and then proceeded with the Gigi song.

On Wednesday I rode to Scotland with my friends, Roddy and Sandy.  They live in a nice area called Galashiels, about an hour south of Edinburgh.   We went to the supermarket and bought ingredients for mushroom risotto, which Roddy made when we got home.  It was delicious!

The weather started out nice on Thursday and there was only a little rain in the forecast, so we decided it was a good day to go for a drive.  We drove to Fife, which is the equivalent of a county, Roddy told me.   Within Fife is St Andrews.  We walked around for a while, seeing the University, where William and Kate met, as well as the famous golf course.  It really is something to see.  I know my brother-in-law, the golfer, will be jealous when he sees the pictures.

We then drove back a different way, along the coast, and stopped at a restaurant along the way.  The scenery is really spectacular.

On my last day, Friday, we decided to take it easy.  We went for more tea and scones (well, I had tea; my friends had cappucino!), the post office, the vet (one of the cats had an appointment) and then dinner at the nearby Italian restaurant.

It was a great visit.  I'm hoping my friends will come visit me next time.

DR Kevin H, it was the "Waltz at Maxim's." GIGI is one of my favorite Lerner & Loewe scores.

I'm up.  I was up at three-thirty in the morning shutting off the breaker and leaving it off.  However, my fear about doing that was that somehow it would just not work when turning it back on, that the pump would just shut down - having just turned it back on, that appears to be the case now.  We'll see if it's working after my jog.

I went to the market, and it was much cooler outside than inside my apartment. As I left the market, the rain began, and hopefully this will cool down the temperatures.

DR FJL, I don't recall any contractual obligation with Rodgers & Hammerstein that I should be mentioned on the poster. The only show that guarantees me a huge credit is JUBILEE, thanks to the Cole Porter Trust, but even that hasn't kept the Ohio Light Opera direcotrs from treating me like garbage!

Back from the four-mile jog.  I went outside and flipped the breaker switch again, to see if I could get the pump working, to no avail.  Then I switched the pump from "auto" to "manual" and it started right up.  So, I'll leave it like that for now.  I wonder if there's a short somewhere in the "auto" part?  I guess we'll see if any of the Jacuzzi things turn on today by themselves.

Sunday afternoon greetings!  We are back from Lima after having quite an adventure on the way home.  We decided to stop at Dayton Mall where Richard dropped me off at Elder-Beerman (department store) and he went on to Orvis and I was to call him when I finished shopping.  Well, by the time I called him there was a huge thunderstorm going on and the rain was coming down so fast that the parking lot near me was flooding.  You can't walk between E-B and Orvis without going outside, so he told me to stay where I was and go shopping some more and he'd call when it began to clear.  By the time he called, I'd bought a pair of slacks, 3 pairs of shorts, and a pair of shoes (possibly for Rob's wedding).  By then I was able to walk to Orvis outside, but he couldn't have driven to pick me up because of the flooding.  It wasn't as bad where he'd parked the car, but he had cracked the windows a bit, so the seats were wet and we both had to change clothes as soon as we got home.

But at least the National Weather Service has cancelled our heat advisory...

Well, Kim and four kittens (Shades, Shanti, Mink, and Feathers) are at adoptions. Purrcy is still very growly, and Sunshine is a little growly. Hopefully tomorrow.

Do you know how they are coping at adoptions?

It is very warm here today.  We took Sherlock into town for a casual walk & lunch in the shade at a Japanese restaurant.  After a short walk we stopped at Larks for dessert.  I had my favorite chocolate cake & Keith had the vanilla ice cream that goes with it.  Larks is on the sidewalk so of course Sherlock got a lot of attention.  I think half the staff also went out to visit him.

Walking along creek on the outside of the park we heard a lot of cheering & saw a young woman soaking wet & wearing a cute summer skirt & top hugging a guy in a swimsuit.  After she got out someone else went in, which in when I decided we were watching people get baptized.

DR JMK they were slightly downstream from where I found you in the wading area.

Tonight I decided to use the panko.  There was a recipe on the box for Macadamia nut/panko breaded chicken breasts.  I didn't have macadamia nuts and I only had chicken thighs in the freezer (they were on sale a while back)  So I grabbed some pecans and made pecan/panko breaded chicken thighs.   I baked it instead of frying.  I can tell you one thing, it was filling.   The jury is still out on whether I really like it or not.  It was ok.  The panko may be better fried.  Anyway, I have lots of leftovers to eat the next couple days

When I went to the humnane society and got Ricky, he was the stinkiest cat you've ever see. He had just pooped, and he was pacing around his cage.  When I got him into the room where you can play with them, he was just so sweet and wanted to cuddle.  So, I decided the poopy smelling affectionate cat was for me.  I actually played with a number of kittens, but kittens are easily adopted.  Rick wasn't full grown but he was about 11 months old.  Old enough to not be a cute kitten.  There was just something about him that made me think he woiuld be a great kitty to live with.   Best decision I've made.

DR Cillaliz - If you make that recipe again - and bake instead of fry - just sprinkle the panko on top of the chicken before baking, and use a bit less than the recipe calls for. That should make it less filling. ;)

I'm not sure if they ship. However, I do know that they offer frozen uncooked pies for sale in the store. So, I guess if you were to request an overnight package packaged in dry ice, well... ???

*They also have a "Pie Truck" that travels around DC. You can track their location HERE (https://twitter.com/#!/ThePieTruckDC). :)

We've had a DOWNTON ABBEY marathon playing here tonight.  Up through episode four.  If Maggie Smith doesn't win the Emmy, there's no justice.

And since I don't want to sleep through most of my day off tomorrow...

Goodnight.

I went to Borders today. The parking lot was packed!

Books were 10% off and CDs were 20% off. Didn't find any CDs that I couldn't live without (they had pretty much gotten rid of their world music section long ago, anyway).

Magazines were all 40% off so bought an issue of the monster movie magazine SCREEM! and I bought a new address book and a book to keep track of birthdays and anniversaries, both 10% off.

I may go back in a few weeks and stock up on greeting cards once those are marked down lower. Borders always has the best greeting cards.

And when did comic books become so expensive!!??

An ARCHIE comic book was $3.99 for goodness sake! I had thought it would be fun to pick one up for my grandniece Taylor, but no sense in getting her hooked on something so expensive.

Wow! I made the poster. That's exciting.

Congratulations, Larry!  It is a nice poster...other than the Wetcher misspelling.

The poster is cute, but someone might want to tell them it would be nice to fix the spelling of Mr. Wechter's last name.

Wasn't David's name misspelled in Olympia?

Did you have to bring that up?? :-[

What I'd really like is some PIE, but I will not succumb, oh, no, I will not succumb.

I went to my sister's today for some left-over wedding cake. :) No, not from my sister's wedding, but the son of one of her co-workers.  My sister bought a couple of Costco cakes and he had made an Oreo cake in several layers, and it had Doctor Who's Tardis on the top.  I guess that he and his new bride are quite the DW fans.

Just finished listening to the Jason Graae: Perfrect Hermany.

You have to submit it for the Grammy consideration in the Traditional Pop Vocal Album. I think it's worth the attempt. That's how good it is.

I had mine sent to my work.  I should get it tomorrow.
