Title: THE RULES
Post by: bk on July 28, 2011, 12:17:21 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes broke the rules, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently following way too many rules.

Good morning, all! I slept quite well, but I was really exhausted.

I'm going to need more vibes from you all if we're going to finish the operation. Kinko's turned out to be great, so that was one ordeal out of our way. Hopefuly, by last night all the orchestra parts have been copied, so today will consist mostly of taping and (hopefully) printng the full scores.

This morning I have a trip to the bank to take care of some financial transactions for myself and my colleague Curtis who's in Europe with Richard III, and then I will head downtown.

DR JRand60, I too am enjoying the CAMELOT stories. When is the opening night?

TOD: There's an old quote from Pablo Picasso: "Desde niño pintaba como Rafael, pero me llevó toda una vida aprender a dibujar como un niño."

“When I was a child, I painted like Raphael, but it has taken me a lifetime to learn to draw like a child."

He learned the rules and spent a lifetime learning how to break them. I have been the same way with journalism. When I read the articles I wrote before I learned the rules, I like them better than what I wrote for the first 15 years or so after school. It took me that long to learn to find and trust my voice.

I'm glad I know some of the rules, especially grammar. I wish I had never been introduced to others.

A friend from church named Bruce is facing deep brain stimulation surgery this morning to deal with his Parkinson's disease. It sounds scary to me, because the patient is conscious while the doctor has his or her hands inside the cranium trying to find the source of tremors.

Bruce was supposed to have had this more than a year ago, but he had his hair cut short without telling the doctor and that wasn't a good thing because it apparently opens the scalp up to infection. (Some other medication that he had to take then postponed things further.)

Anyway, prayers and vibes for Bruce would be greatly appreciated.

TOD: I think that's why I love the beginning of the original "Merrily We Roll Along" when the elder Franklin Shepard is shouting above the din, "Because I know the rules." And then we learn that the rules were what helped him get into the mess he's in.

But a very nice thing happened at Pret a Manger. Instead of making and eating my oatmeal I decided to go to PAM and get coffee and a Bunny Pot of yogurt, sliced almonds and julienne slices of fruit and cranberries. They open at 7am. They are usually quite on top of things but today perhaps Larry's ghost was visiting because things were not moving along. I was the first customer and it was clear they were not ready for anyone. I had my coffee and yogurt and was waiting patiently while my clerk was apologizing (PAM has GREAT customer service). Finally the manager came around and she said, "it's on the house, thanks for your business" Free breakfast! Hooray. I'll go back again.

Sorry for being E&T, but I've been spending my days with my mom who's in the hospital.  After suffering with stomach cramps all weekend, we brought her to the ER on Tuesday and found she was having a gall bladder attack.  What seemed to be a simple plan of removing the gall bladder has turned into a complex set of issues, tests and procedures.  So I'm asking for some HHW vibes to help my mom deal with it all.  Thanks!

TOD:

I've never been a believer in workshops.

You take a dozen screenwriters or musical comedy writer/composers or whatever and put them in the same room, and you get a dozen different viewpoints.

That can be very confusing to the original writer.

That's not to say that you should not listen to outside suggestions.

BUT, you should pick one or two professionals who you trust (e.g. BK's guru, Margaret) and just listen to them.

When I was writing scripts for Roger Corman, each draft I wrote would be circulated to a half-dozen people on his staff...and they would all submit notes.

I refused to read the individual notes.

Instead, I asked Roger's story editor, whose opinion I totally trusted, to go over the notes and just give me the ones that she felt were valid.

Too many cooks, as they say, can spoil the broth.

Title: Re: THE RULES

TOD:

Here's a short excerpt from my memoir that bears out BK's point-of-view:

I never really took any courses in screenwriting or read any books on
the subject, though I had read some scripts to learn the technical format.

I think my knowledge of story structure, character development, dialogue
and all the other aspects of what goes into a proper screenplay came
from having seen so many movies over the years that I just “absorbed” it.

One of my dearest friends is actress Diane McBain (Ice Palace,
Parrish), a major ingénue star of the 1960s. For many years, Diane served
as my “sounding board”. I would write several pages of a script, and then
read them to her over the phone. If she laughed at the right places, I
knew I was on the right track.

At one point, Diane decided that she wanted to do some
screenwriting, so she started reading books on the subject.

“It’s amazing,” she told me one day, “how in all of your scripts your
plot points hit on just the right pages. At least, according to these books.”

“What do you mean?” I asked.

“Your story’s ‘catalyst’ hits on page five or six, your ‘first turning
point’ occurs around page twenty-five or so…”

“Why did you tell me that?” I said.

“Huh?”

“Now, you’ve made me aware of the process, and I’m going to be
thinking about it every time I sit down to write a script.”

Being aware of “the process” did become a problem for awhile. As
I’ve said, I do my best work when I am writing “by the seat of my pants”.

In other words, once I have a story idea, my key characters and a
very general outline on how the plot will progress, I like to just sit down
and write, letting the characters “take me where they will”. Structure just
seems to take care of itself.

However, after Diane put the thought into my head, for the next
couple of scripts that I wrote, I started editing myself, saying “Oh my
God, did I hit my catalyst on page five or six, my first turning point on
page twenty five…?”

Too much knowledge can not only be dangerous. It can also be
distracting.

I've workshopped several shows, and it helped in some ways, didn't in others.  You just have to go in with a clear vision of what you want, take the advice you think is appropriate, and ignore the rest.  :)

I have only been involved in a couple of original shows.....but I think the writer has to be charge, or things get seriously damaged.

As for the "rules" - it's the reason why nothing really works and everything looks to same....too bad.

Of course too much "originality" can kill a show, too.

BK - How do you feel about the rule about perfect rhymes?

I don't ever use imperfect rhymes and haven't since I was, I think, eighteen.  That's just part of the lyric-writing craft that I enjoy and it's a challenge to do it and that's part of the fun for me.  I like songs that have imperfect rhymes (Second Avenue) but I personally would never do it.

Very nice, JMK...except that the large "back" picture isn't a picture of the back of the Blu-ray.  I don't know if you have any say in that, but I just thought that you would want to know. :)

The traffic in this city is so out of control it's pathetic.  Every street, every freeway - the freeways only because people put on their stupid suits - any "traffic at noon on any freeway (unless there's an accident) is caused by idiot drivers - that certainly was the case today - once you got beyond the three idiots, who were causing a half-mile's worth of bumper to bumper traffic, there were NO cars.  That's all it took - three idiots.

Got off at Highland and traffic was backed up all the way to the off-ramp and stayed that way.  Luckily I know a little short cut to John's apartment - it's right past the Hollywood Bowl.  If I'd tried to go down to Franklin, it would have been another thirty minutes to go a tenth of a mile.

Thanks!

Well, show biz people do have that reputation.

We're not so kinky as government employees.

DR JRand60, I missed the sign about the CAMELOT opening date; I must have been to busy texting while I drove.

I listened to that, too, and enjoyed it, which one slight exception that I won't mention until you've finished it. I have a reservation now for Patchett's new book on CD. I have to finish "The Count of Monte Cristo" first. I'm on disc 32 of 37 and I look forward to getting into the car every day, especially when the traffic is bad because the tension is wonderful.

I am not going to get sick. I am not going to get sick. I am not going to get sick.  I did go on a bike ride today, but not full out. I didn't sleep well last night. So not sure if that was part of why i was not feeling too great.   I just have no energy.

It's weird because in may i was so sick for almost a month. Then for a month and a half i've been exercising a lot. And now the past few days i feel so fatigued.

Does anyone know any things that one can take to get more energy?

We went to Dino's Pizza for dinner, and I was VERY good and only had three slices - that's 1000 calories and I'd burned 400, so not bad at all.  Rehearsal was lots of fun - a couple of things were a tad sloppy and a couple of things needed an energy boost but I think it's because we were in the rehearsal space and had a working mic, which took some getting used to.  The act is running around fifty minutes, but it was speedy tonight and I think when it slows down a hair and we have applause it will come in more around fifty-five minutes, which is fine.  I'm eating a snack now - cucumber roll - only 200 calories.  And then I'll have an apple.
