CD ordered.

Yes DR TCB - Miss June Kenney was recently found in Arizona and there was an interview (with special acknowledgement to DR MBARNUM) in one of the sci fi magazines - NOT Scarlet - I forget the name of it.

It was a nice interview with lots of information about the elusive Ms. Kenney, who does local radio work and is happy that people remember her movies.

Good morning, all! I have a day to myself, and I need it after the sturm und drang of last week's library work, which I believe was tripled by all of the machinery problems. Yesterday afternoon, around 2pm, the building's internet service dropped out and came back after a 20 minute or so wait while we rebooted modems, unplugged everything and searched for possible reasons within the office. We've had the days where the power kept cutting out. Outside of the printer burning up or actually dying on us, everything else has happened. Next week I'll need all the vibes I can get to insure the parts and scores arrive safely in Dublin. With the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if everything never got there.

So, I planned to sleep an hour later, but at 6:30 I was ready to crawl out of bed and begin the laundry, which is now in the dryers. I have about an hour now to tidy the apartment before I have to return to the laundromat to retrieve everything. After that, I will return to the personal project I've been working on, and I think that will be my day.

I have no idea if I've seen any Sci Fi movie since 2011. While Charlotte was living at home, all I saw were teen movies and chick flicks. And Harry Potter!

The laundry is finished, and a frenzy of emails have passed between me, the director of Chapter Productions in Dublin, and recording producer, and our financial producer concerning casting this recording. I've watched several wonderful youtube clips of various Irish opera productions, from the Royal Irish Academy of Music to the Opera Theatre Company. I've listened to mp3 files of a good baritone Gavan Ring, a good Carmen whom I cannot cast in EILEEN, and watched on youtube a good tenor named Dean Power in Handel's ACIS AND GALATEA and a wonderful young lady who sang "O Mio Babbino Caro" slung over the shoulder of the young man carrying her offstage in GIANNI SCHICCHI. I think this casting will occupy most of my day.

Boy is there ever a difference in vinyl quality between standard Liberty LPs and their old "Premiere" line.  Their premiere line is about as good as Enoch Light stuff, which I consider a real compliment, but their standard issue stuff is really noisy.

Sorry, I was so tired last night I forgot to post the announcement, so here it is.  You know the drill - if you want it it's 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (23.73) paid via paypal to kritzerland at adelphia dot net.

Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition world premiere soundtrack release:

ADVENTURES OF CASANOVA
Music Composed by Hugo Friedhofer

ADVENTURE! ROMANCE!

Adventures Of Casanova presents the legendary womanizer as not only a legendary womanizer but an expert with the blade (sword, that is), champion of the oppressed, and hero for the ages.  In other words, Eagle-Lion’s 1948 release is a standard-issue programmer, one of about fifty titles they released that year.  Adventures of Casanova stars Arturo de Cordova as Casanova, Turhan Bey as his friend Lorenzo, John Sutton as his enemy, the Count de Brissac, and fetching Lucille Bremer as Lady Bianca and Noreen Nash, as Zanetta, her servant.   The film is a swashbuckler, filled with swords flashing, intrigues, double-crosses, switched identities, cowards, an oily villain, and a hero who can out-duel and out-love anyone.  But what really makes the film come to life and even occasionally lifts it from its B-movie roots, is the superb score by Hugo Friedhofer.

Friedhofer had spent years as an orchestrator for Max Steiner and Erich Wolfgang Korngold, so he knew this type of film scoring intimately.  By 1948, he’d been composing for films for years and had already won the Academy Award for his brilliant score to William Wyler’s The Best Years Of Our Lives.  How Eagle-Lion could afford him after he’d won his Oscar is anyone’s guess, but they could and they did and Friedhofer provided the film with a lusty, full-bodied, and wonderful score, very much in the Korngold mold, but unmistakably Friedhofer.   This is music in the classic adventure tradition, with sweeping themes for fighting and romancing, intrigue, and villains and heroes.

This is the world-premiere release of Adventures of Casanova.  All that existed from this film were a set of acetates that Friedhofer had.  Our mastering engineer, James Nelson, has done as much as possible in cleaning up the sound and the result is a classic Friedhofer score finally available for all to hear.  Most of the acetates were in really good condition, but acetates are acetates and there is no way around some of the anomalies that are inherent in them – only a couple of cues were in really problematic condition, but we’ve done our best to make those sound as good as they can sound.  It is an archival release, but an important one, as have been several other releases from acetates from the Golden Age issued by other labels.   We have put the cues in film order, which makes for the best listening experience.

This release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.   Additionally, we are offering a special deal with the purchase of this release.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the second week of September – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I have never heard of this artist... or group... or band.  I guess they probably don't expect me to buy tickets either.

I think it would be so exciting to see her first performance of her act in front of an audience.

You have made that point before, elmore. Sometimes, though, I just like to indulge in pure trash, much like your video collection.

One of the stars of that movie used to be a regular on this site.
Oh, so I join and the stars leave? Is that what you're saying? LOL

Actually, this person left several years ago.  And you, John G., you are a star e-magazine editor.

Sounds impressive to me.

If his distribution is chronic
And his writing's pointed and keen
Though his magazine's electronic
And it's only read on a screen

Though he's mainly been read by fans online so far
The chances are
The guy is a star

Back from the four-mile jog, errands and whatnot, and a little plate of matzo brei, which is surprisingly very calorie-friendly at under 300.

Notice to Kevin
(Next time he checks in to HHW)

I see that e-Bay currently has an original poster of Reba McEntire (and some actor I have enver heard of) in ANNIE GET YOUR GUN.  Sadly, it is not a sgined poster.  And it is also $125.00.  Of course I know that Kevin is crazy about Reba.

Back from a lovely party in Lansing where Mary Linda was showered with many lovely gifts and Rob received a chest full of tools from my brother-in-law.  Rob showed up at the end to be oohed and aahed over and to help clean up.  My sister and I have been home almost an hour and DN/Goddaughter Lauren is on her way to stay overnight here before heading back to Ohio tomorrow.  I'll stay until Monday.

I was just channel surfing and caught a few minutes of something called (I think) "Just Can't Get Enough," which had DR MBarnum's name all over it: Chippendale's dancers, undressed body builders, and atrocious acting. There are enough seminude actors to keep Mikey intersted in their careers for the next 30 years, by which time they'll be old enough for him to consider dating.

I'm watching Lydia's Kitchen now. Anything was better than watching the Chippendale movie. I really like Lydia and I would love to go to her restaurant.

BK:

I have a question (I know its not Wednesday, but if I don't ask it now I'll forget by Wednesday) I am watching the "Roadshow" version of South Pacific. (DVD release)  only haThe restored footage is a lot "paler" than the "General Release" version. Perhaps you know the answer to this:

I was wondering why couldn't they fix the color to match the balance of the film. According to the commentary they only had a postive print. Couldn't they have fix the color through the same process you did with The First Nudie Musical?

The additional roadshow footage came from a print, Michael.  I don't think it could have been color corrected to the point where it would match the standard release stuff, which I think was taken off of an internegative (I might be misremembering that).

I will tell you one DVD that really burned *me* up in that same regard, though, was HAWAII.  The roadshow edition of the VHS showed no appreciable difference in quality between the restored footage and the edited, standard release version.  The DVD still didn't include it.  I love that movie and would love for Criterion to release the full roadshow version of it.  And such a lovely Elmer Bernstein score, one of my all time favorites of his.

In an attempt to fend off withdrawal from DOWNTON ABBEY, we're rewatching GOSFORD PARK.  I had forgotten how funny Bob Balaban is in this movie.  "Alan Mowbray's a good idea--these people look like Alan Mowbray, plus he speaks with a British accent.  These people talk like they're from England.  Is Claudette Colbert available?  She's British isn't she, or is she just affected?"  ;)

I believe Bob's Uncle Barney is the man who fired Miss Frances Farmer in 1942 from Paramount.

Yes I also believe this is correct.....although not with the same panache as Jack Warner and Bette Davis later on in 1948....

Bette:  Jack, this director is crucifying me.  I cannot work with him.  Jack - it's him or me.

Jack:  (short pause)  Okay, Bette.  It's you.

And then of course ten years later when Davis was out on the tent circuit, a man stopped by and told Bette that Warner's was doing THE HELEN MORGAN STORY and wanted her to play Helen's mother.  Bette was taken aback - but work is work.  She wired Jack Warner:  "Hear you are interested in me for mother in Helen Morgan Story."

Jack wired back:  "No Bette.  We never even thought of you."

DR JMK I love the Si Zentor Premiere Liberty albums.....especially the Big Band one and the Trombones and Johnny Mann Singers LP.

And the design was great.  And they discussed at length the recording process.....all live with singers and orchestra.....no one singing to tracks ....  all done live....

Whoops, just realized I had skipped the notes and the annoucement was there--did BK really mean to do that?  He's never done that before as far as I can recall.

I was about to ask the same thing.

Is this the first time that he did not start the Notes with "Well, dear readers..."?!?!?

And I'm wondering if the official announcement is now starting off with the first part of today's Notes. ::)

I was quite surprised about not seeing "Well, dear readers...".  I remember BK posting some time ago about how proud he was about his unending streak of having started his posts with "Well, dear readers..." more times than anyone in the world. :-\

Oh, my Lord in heaven - I had no idea what ANYONE was talking about in regards to the announcement in the notes.  I wrote part one of the notes as I always do in a Word doc and then I cut and paste into the form I use.  I have no idea what happened but somehow the raw announcement, before I'd done the cutting of it for the real announcement ended up in part one of the notes.  So part one of the notes aren't even notes and I'm going in to rectify that right now.  Unbelievable!
