Title: SWEET CHARITY

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were sweet and charitable, and now it is time for you to post until the charitable cows come home.

Oh, my Lord in heaven - I had no idea what ANYONE was talking about in regards to the announcement in the notes.  I wrote part one of the notes as I always do in a Word doc and then I cut and paste into the form I use.  I have no idea what happened but somehow the raw announcement, before I'd done the cutting of it for the real announcement ended up in part one of the notes.  So part one of the notes aren't even notes and I'm going in to rectify that right now.  Unbelievable!

Oh, and I realize that yesterday's topic made no sense because I talked about seeing a motion picture on Blu and Ray entitled Moon, from the director of Source Code.  I rather enjoyed Moon - a couple of poorly realized scenes, but directed in the classic style with no sops to today's "style" - and that includes using models rather than CGI - and you know what, the models are BETTER.  It's basically a one-man show - Sam Rockwell is basically the only person in the film, save for a couple of people on a computer screen and Kevin Spacey voicing the computer GERTY.  The director, Duncan Jones, is someone to watch, I think.  I don't know how many people know, but he's the son of David Bowie - he changed his name from Zowie Bowie to Duncan Jones, and no, I'm not making any of this up.  So, now yesterday's topic of discussion makes sense.

From yesterday:

Christopher and his Kind

There is an interesting Doctor Who connection with the first three actors listed on the American DVD release. Matt Smith of course is the current Doctor. Lindsay Duncan and Toby Jones have guested on the series. Jones also appeared in the "other Truman Capote bio pic" Infamous

Here is the trailer for the film. Its preceeded by an ad for Bud Light

Good morning, all! I have a trip to Toyland to check on things and an afternoon meeting with DJ, the director of the Appalachian Christmas project, which he's eager to try out in a regional theatre this holiday season. I hope he has good news.

I have little else to report. Singers' names and mp3 files are flying into my emails from Dublin right and left. So far, I've liked these folk:
Sandra Oman, lyric soprano
Sinead Campbell Wallace, soprano
Dean Power, tenor, who sounds perfect for the juvenile, but might work for our leading man
Simon Morgan, baritone, who sounds like a tenor in some of his pop work but has an opera repertoire of baritone roles; his website has some interesting soundbites: http://www.simonamorgan.com/index.html

I also heard, on a youtube excerpt from GIANNI SCHICCHI at the Royal Irish Academy of Music, a pretty young lady sing "O Mio Babbino Caro," but I cannot find her name!

DR TCB - Thank You for the Vibes yesterday.

*Next time, you may want to focus more of them on the second show of the day, in particular, the Dream Ballet. Apparently, a button on one of Dream Curly's sleeves caught on Dream Laurey's dress - the "quick release" one (it's "closed" with magnets). Everyone and everything eventually recovered, but the "pas de deux" ended up being a "pas de un" while Dream Laurey danced gracefully off-stage into the arms of a very alert dresser.

And...

Now I'm all teary-eyed. "CBS Sunday Morning" just reran a piece on the City Clerk's Office in New York City from 1998. It was basically a series of clips, glimpses of various couples waiting in line for their marriage license. They added a post-script from the past week that included some clips of same-sex marriages - along with Joel Grey singing "Marriage" from CabaretBeautiful!

I love, love, love SWEET CHARITY.  I saw the roadshow version in SLC when my family was down there for summer vacation in what I guess was 1969 (?).  I didn't get the program that day and was mortified later that I hadn't, especially when a friend of mine in Seattle (where we lived) had a brother who had one and I got to leaf through it.  Seattle actually had a Universal distributor office back in those days (I doubt it does anymore) and I called and asked if there was anyway I could get one and the guy said, "Sure, I have one right here--what's your address?"  And a few days later, I had a program--although the guy had royally screwed up writing down our address, it still got to me.  Memories, pressed between the pages of my mind.

I've never seen SWEET CHARITY on the stage, just the movie several times, which I really like.

Question:

The DVD has an alternate ending that is much more upbeat (i.e. McMartin character changes his mind and comes back to her) than the one in the theatrical release of the movie.

How does the play end?

Post by: JMK on July 31, 2011, 09:07:48 AM
There are some people who just hate DNR, I deal with them all the time on Blu-ray.com.  And to be fair, Universal especially is over aggressive with noise reduction on a lot of their catalog releases, leaving a kind of smeary, waxy look as a result.  It doesn't bother me as much as it does some, but it is noticeable.
Title: Re: SWEET CHARITY
Post by: JMK on July 31, 2011, 09:09:09 AM
The sort of haloing in SWEET CHARITY from backlighting is also not the same haloing (also called ringing and edge enhancement) you get from too much artificial sharpening.  That also doesn't drive me as crazy as it does some people (especially those with huge projection systems where it shows up more readily), but again it's very noticeable on some releases.

What I hate is aliasing and shimmer.  If we put a man on the moon, why can't we compress video so that it doesn't freak out when there are parallel lines or close-cropped patterns to resolve.  Of course, maybe we didn't actually put a man on the moon.  ;)

SMURFS is essentially a "Family" film - even though most of the people who would actually know about "The Smurfs" are no longer children. And since "children" don't buy movie tickets, well... And "Cowboys & Aliens" has two major box office draws: Daniel Craig and Harrison Ford.

I have now caught up with all the posts and must be going.  The visiting cousins want to walk around the Nisqually Valley Wildlife Refuge (http://www.fws.gov/Nisqually/), then we're all going to my parents' house for a barbecue.  After that, we'll probably play Scrabble until we all leave for the evening.

Have a good day, all!

What happened to the Space Needle lunch?

It is amazing that during the majority of the almost 50 years that the Space Needle has been in Seattle, the restaurant was basically crap.  Over priced, and sadly lacking in every area.  I suppose that the owners always figured that the main customer base was going to be tourists rather than locals - so who cares?

In the last ten years or so, the quality of the restaurant (at least the revolving one at the top) has greatly improved.  The prices are still high, but the food is wonderful

We moved to Seattle just a couple of days before my 11th birthday and I asked if we could have my birthday dinner at the Space Needle restaurant.  A very unexpected surprise came when my "rich" Uncle from New York showed up out of the blue with a business partner of his, as they were doing some sort of real estate deal in Seattle.  They came with us, and the business partner told me he had a son my age and wanted me to pick out stuff at the gift shop for his boy.  Not being quite *that* naive, I raided the gift shop and took home quite a haul.  I even managed to feign surprise when he gave it all to me.  ;)

In 1963, for my sister's 16th birthday, my mom and grandmother took my sister and me to the Space Needle for her birthday lunch.  Hoping for a possible candle on a dish of ice cream for my sister; my mom told the host that it was my sister's birthday.  At the end of lunch, the waitress brought a cake with lit sparklers on top, the manager of the place rolled a big Hurdy Gurdy over to the table, and the entire waitstaff gathered around to sing Happy Birthday to me sister.  I thought my sister was going to die of embarrassment.  Fortunately the windows of the Space Needle do not open.

DR Cillaliz, do the cats sleep in your room? Is that why they keep waking you? Or could you just close your door?

the cats sleep in my room, on my bed, where ever they want to.  If I shut the door, Ricky will scratch it and scratch it and scratch it...

I've been to dinner at Chin Chin on East 49th with my friend Bruce Pomahac, and many things were discussed and dished, from the conductor frind of Rosie O'Donnell who crashed and burned recently with the Opera Theatre of St Louis production of La Fille du Regiment to a possible job for me. We laughed a great deal and had a fantastic time. I'm now rather tipsy and ready to fall over.

Last night I started watching the BBC version of TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES with Justine Waddell, and I may watch more of that tonight.

I have just been thinking of TESS OF THE D'URBERVILLES, though of Polanski's version, as I watched the new version of JANE EYRE, which I must review tomorrow.  The cinematography and locations are very reminiscent of the Polanski film.

DR TCB - my home until tomorrow morning is my sister's house.  I've been here since Thursday and could have gone home today, but I wanted to go to church with her and her husband this morning, and take them out for a belated anniversary lunch.  We've had a relaxing Sunday and I'll be all refreshed for my 5-hour drive tomorrow.

Back from our first try in front of an audience.  Melody did a great job, an amazing job for a first time out.  A few nits to pick, but overall she had the elderly crowd in the palm of her hand.  All the little staging and button changes we did yesterday really paid off and worked brilliantly.  So, we just have to address one more staging thing and then some general energy notes and how to bring the audience back after a song's done.  That's a  surprisingly hard thing to get right, but she'll get the hang of it easily.

We went to the Burbank Barney's Beanery - don't need to go back there ever - terrible service.  Food was fine (chicken salad sandwich and a side of mac and cheese).  I had a treat, a sort of cookie ice cream sandwich that I ate about a third of.  It was good and I'm glad I had it and given the smallness of the sandwich and that Melody ate some of the mac and cheese, I think I'm more than fine.

Tess is possibly the worst 19th century novel I've ever read. I love the Hardy of "Far from the Madding Crowd" and "The Vicar of Wakefield," but loathe "Tess" and "Return of the Native" and don't much care for "Jude the Obscure." I find the only way to have any sympathy for Tess is to read her as a girl who was dropped on her head as an infant one too many times.

I had a fabulous dinner at a friend's house tonight.  She's from Japan and made a wonderful meal.  1st course, miso soup, al dente vegetables, cold shrimp (cooked) and sush with wasabi/soy saucei.  Second course, fabulous salmon. it was baked and I'm not exactly sure what the crust was or the sauce but it was absolutely delicious.  And for dessert, individual Haagan Das and coffee.   It was just wonderful.  I was the only guest as a couple other friends had other plans.  I had to drop off the dishes she left at my house for the party.  It was fun to really talk to her.  We have only spent time in groups and I've never really had a long conversation with her.  She runs a manufacturing co. here and her husband lives in Japan.  A very nice evening to end the weekend

I had a great weekend. Last night I decided to stay at the lake a little later so I called my cat sitter and had her come give Callie her early evening meds.  I think it was enough to scare the cats into being good for the evening. They let me sleep last night and I got 8 1/2 hours of sleep. It was great.
