Well, you've read the notes, the notes told it like it was, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they won't think about coming home until I'm safely home.
-
And the word of the day is: POLYSEMOUS!
-
And now - Dino at the piano.
-
Since I was in the midst of posting when the topic was locked, I shall continue.
-
I was just telling TCB how pleased I am that he's back here.
-
Continued work vibes to JohnG.
-
Procedure and recovery vibes to MichaelS.
-
Continued work vibes to JohnG.
Thank you.
-
And I missed thank you, too, George, as the day skipped.
-
I am recovering today, myself. I must see the doctor on a semi-routine basis for treatment for some old injuries and today was the day. HHW may be an excellent place to convalesce, but these old bones don't like me to be on the computer too long.
-
JMK, thanks again for telling me about Ebates. I got a BIG FAT CHECK today for $5.64, which is $5.64 more than I had before.

As for flowers, I rather like irises. But there are many others I enjoy, too.

VIBES DR JEANNE!!!!
Thank you, Jane.

I was also glad to see that Jose is back in DC, with an UNeventful trip home.
-
And that Larry seems to be enjoying Dublin.
-
Dino may be at the piano, but I shall sign off.

I couldn't figire out why I couldn't post and finally realized BK sent the topic ot bed early
-
I also was tripped up by the early closing of yesterday's topic!
Travel vibes to BK - you'll be on your way before I get up in the morning, so I may not see you wave when you fly over Ohio.

So... how was your birthday, Vixmom?

;D

New day, ;D.

Mega vibes to everyone who needs them.
Hugs and kisses too. :-* :-* :-* :-*

Just sitting and relaxing, listening to Cole Porter, A Musical Toast, 13th annual S.T.A.G.E.
Seems like I never just sit and relax anymore.
Feels really good. Need to find more time to do this. :)
-
But again it's time to get ready for work. Oh well, the cd will keep playing, even if I fall asleep.

Goodnight everyone. Sweet dreams. Happy Wednesday. ;D

And good night, all.
Healing vibes for all of you in need.

Hi John G :)
Good night too.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good morning, all! I've had another fantastic day and I'm now killing time before I meet Joe and walk to our first piano-singer rehearsal. I am excited about meeting these folk I've only seen on youtube or heard on mp3 files.
Last night Joe and David Brophy took me to a wonderful restaurant, Hugo's, around the corner from the hotel and across the street from a famous Irish pub, O'Donaghue's(?), that calls itself 'the home of Irish music' and the place where the Chieftains got started. The dinner lasted around three hours, with wine, wonderful salmon, greens and potatoes, along with gossip and stories about casting, the singers, the orchestra personnel, and the panic attack of our harpist over the size of her part (we're recrding all of this?).
David Brophy, our conductor, is a wonderful talent, and I think he will do a fantastic job. He'd just come from a rehearsal with the piper for the recording and had some questions about parts that were not playable on the Irish pipes. My feeling is, it should be imnprovised, using Herbert's notation as a guideline. The player, whose name I could never attempt to spell or pronounce, is considered the best in Ireland, so I'm sure we'll work it out satisfactorily.
Joe's bad news was that the chorus master was finding it impossible with summer schedules to assemble a boys choir to sing the 'Ave Maria' in the Act Three Opening, so we'll record the orchestra track and dub them in later.
BK, safe fight today! Get home safely. I'm happy all went well.
DR John G, great news on the work front.
DR TCB, welcome back. I hope things improve swiftly and soon.
-
Good vibes to one and all today!
-
I'm up and ready and shall shortly be on my way to the airport and then on my way home to the City of Studio.
-
Safe home vibes for BK.
-
Hello from the airport. Got here pretty quickly. The crowds at security were unbelievable. Happily, when you purchase extra leg room seats on JetBlue they now have an express lane to check in. Funnily, as crowded as the security thing was, most people rather stupidly all got into the same lane, when there were six others you could get to if you only opened your eyes. That's what I did and I only had two people in front of me. For whatever reason, they sent my bag through again - maybe the backup hard drive caused them worries, but it literally only took an extra thirty seconds and they didn't flag it or make me open it. We board in about thirty minutes.
-
Continued healing vibes for DR TCB!
Safe traveling vibes for MR BK who must be in the air by now.
-
Congrats to DR JOHN G on permanent employee status.
-
Sounds like the shoot went very well.
We are going out to the house my sister is renting and taking her first and last month's rent. She will be home in a about a month!

Safe travel for BK.
Glad the shoot went so well.

Well, it looks like Portland may *not* meet/break a 1954 record of no 90 degree days over the summer. It's forecasted for 90 next Monday, right when we'll be at the coast, which should be yummy!!
-
Betsy is resisting the call of the slots in her Reno hotel, which she said is mammoth (the hotel, not the call).
-
Whether she will also resist the call of the quickie divorce remains to be seen.
-
Wednesday morning greetings! Today I'm going to stay home and do the things I didn't get crossed off my Tuesday to-do list.
-
Here's my Question for BK. Last night I was watching for the first time, THE SOUND & THE FURY on TCM. I suddenly recognized the haunting main theme music by Alex North and realized it was also a song I had heard. I could even remember some of the lyrics to it. I not only knew it, but was pretty sure I owned a recording of it. Sure enough, after a little internet research, I realized I had it on an old PLATTERS album of golden hits...though I don't think this was a hit for them and, in fact, was the "b" side of ENCHANTED. TCM notes said a theme song was supposed to have been written by North and Sammy Cahn, but never came about. This is, of course, inaccurate, as the Platters hit is credited to North and Cahn and definitely uses the main theme from the film. I noticed the Varese Sarabande has released the soundtrack album. Did this happen in your sojourn there, BK? Is the song, either by the Platters or anyone else, featured on the album? Do you have any further info or insights on the song, such as who else may have recorded it? It's a lovely number, perfect for a Damone or Sinatra, but apparently never made the hit parade. Any thoughts would be appreciated it.
Also watching HARPER last night, also on TCM, an instrumental version of Killing Me Softly With His Song, is threaded through the score. Was the song written for the movie or just utilized in it? Again, no lyric or sung version appears in the film.
-
Vibes for Betsy for resistance!
-
Much love to Jeanne!
-
Please take care of yourself and feel better, Michael S!

Right when we will be driving home from Portland. We are going to spend Bryan's last weekend in Portland with him.

I don't think a quickie divorce is as fast as you think. I bet she will be home before the legal time limit. ;)
-
Pogue, I believe Druxy used to rep Cahn and might have some info for you.

DR vixmom - I hope you had a wonderful birthday weekend with your family even if you had some unexpected things pop up.
-
Otherwise...
I managed to make it through last night's show without dozing off too many times. ;) -At least I never missed an entrance. ;)
We actually had another wonderful audience last night - our Tuesday night audiences have consistently been amazing responsive. And last night's audience was also quite vocal - which helped to keep me awake.
After the show, I headed right back to my brother's place, and went right to bed. And 12 hours later...
-
*The understudies did wonderful jobs last night too. :)

I have a couple of errands I need to run before tonight's show, and since I let myself sleep in quite a bit this morning, well... I don't have too many things to get done, I just don't want to rush through them. Oh, and some breakfast/brunch/lunch/food in general would be a good thing too.
Laters...

I did not have a pleasant night's sleep last night. My left leg (I can no longer tell which is the good one and which is the bad one) started doing its cramping thing again as soon as I got into bed. It came on every twenty to thirty seconds and continued to do that until I finally fell asleep a couple of hours later.

DR JMK I hope your local news is wrong about the weather. I'm finding Sunday, our one full day there, will be the hottest day at 86 degrees. I hope there is a breeze as I enjoy a lot of walking in the city & Sherlock will find it difficult in the heat. At least we should be comfortable at outdoor dining.
-
DR TCB I know about leg cramps, not fun at all. Does stretching your leg & rolling your toes & foot towards your head help? When it doesn't I can get up & walk around which I know you shouldn't be doing in the middle of the night.

It's The Oregonian, Jane--80's through Friday, 84 Saturday, 90 Sunday, 92 Monday then back to 85 Tuesday.
-
It is my understanding, DR Pogue, that the song was, indeed, written, but not used as a song in the film. Many times, songs have resulted from themes used in movies and are recorded afterward.
There is no song on the CD of "The Sound and the Fury".

In the somewhat amusing punchline department: I have been regularly selling my old DVDs/BDs to a regular customer on CL for about a year. Last night in prep for the big community garage sale Mt. Park has every year, I was going through old VHS tapes and looking to see if some of them had come out on DVD/BD so that I could retire my tapes. I found a copy of THE SECRET OF ROAN INISH on eBay for $1 and bought it, and of course it turns out to be this guy who's been buying all my old stuff for months. He's now coming on Saturday to the garage sale to get all of my old DVDs/BDs plus the kids' unwanted videogames. I love CL. :)
-
I have taken some grape iris with me to every new house I've purchased and they have done marvelously. I transplanted them too late this year and so they really didn't bloom but I'm hoping they will next year. My neighbor has some beautiful wisteria he said I could come take clipping from to start my own hedge. Does anyone know what the proper method is?

Hello, everyone.

I believe DR Druxy used to rep EVERYONE!

And why, may I ask, does Jane know so much about quickie divorces? ;)

Pogue, I believe Druxy used to rep Cahn and might have some info for you.
No, I represented Paul Francis Webster and Sammy Fain.
I never crossed paths with Mr. Cahn.

I enjoyed the irises, Ron.
There's an area in northern San Diego County where the entire side of some hills is covered in flowers. I believe there must be a commercial grower there. It's quite a lovely site from the freeway.

I am back from a wonderful rehearsal with four of our leads, all of whom deserve big careers in the opera world:
Lynda Lee: majestic, Junoesque, with a wonderful voice running from light and playful to dramatic soprano, sending out high B's like lasers
Rachel Kelly: tiny, beautiful, funny, smart, really adorable
Mary O'Sullivan: lyric coloratura soprano with a great sense of humor and a lot of intelligence
Eamonn Mulhall: much handsomer than his photos, with a bigger voice than the gorgeous lyric tenor I heard on youtube
Not only were they fantastic performers, they were all delightful people eager to jump right in and tackle this turkey. I was honored to be in their company. Tomorrow we add Andrew Ashwin and Phillip O'Reilly inh the afternoon and the chorus in the evening. I'm quite happy at the moment.

TCB, have your doctors done a mineral panel for you? Low levels of either potassium or magnesium can cause cramping and may be adding to your discomfort. Unfortunately, blood tests are not an accurate indicator of magnesium, as magnesium isn't stored in the blood, but supplementation may help. Potassium can be measured by blood work. The supplements are inexpensive.

I skipped my hiking group outing to the mountains this morning to hike my regular trails with Keith & Sherlock. We went farther than I've gone since I broke my wrist, though not as high as where I was at the time of the break. I felt good hiking today & was able to jog here & there. I still won't go there alone, not sure I ever will again.
Soon we are taking Sherlock to the new pet store for a bath. After we drop him off Keith will go to the Y. My plan was to try & swim again while Keith worked out but the pool is closed for the camp children. I guess I will go on the treadmill & see if there is any weight equipment I can use.
-
Wow! Did she get spayed before going home with them?
Nope - I'll leave that pricey chore, along with rabies shots and required licensing to them. I have complete confidence that none of this will be done.

I'll have to find the CD and check it out. As to Killing Me Softly, I'm pretty sure you're mistaking what you heard for that song - I don't think it was written yet but there are a few Andre Previn tracks and the Johnny Mandel stuff and it may have sounded similar.

Not locally. (This is the type of service the Animal Rescue League used to perform before it "went away".)

I, on the other hand, am safely home. We took off about forty-five minutes late thanks to JFK being one of the most ineptly run airports in the country. They had us taxiing for takeoff, then stopped us and we sat where we were for forty-five minutes because of the traffic buildup. If you can't handle the traffic then figure it out or have the airlines have less flights. We arrived home, however, only twenty minutes late.
-
Welcome home, BK - I'm glad your trip to NYC was so successful and fun!
-
If you can't handle the traffic then figure it out or have the airlines have less flights.
The airport can control the number of flights ("slots") but have no controll over airline scheduling; it is the pile up of numerous airlines all scheduling departures at the same key hours that causes the runway log-jams. To complicate matters, the controllers often force the planes to depart the gate on time(even if it means a long delay on the tarmac, in order to accommodate landing flights.

BK, both Julieanne and I heard KIlling Me Softly that threaded through the score, usually somewhere in the scenes with Newman and Woodward. I didn't notice who did the score and if it was the same composer of the original song, but we're both pretty sure that was the song we heard.

Julieanne's pretty sure she saw the tune listed in the end credits as well.

According to wikipedia. An instrumental version was indeed used in the drowning pool and Charles fox received credit for conductor and composer.

I thought you were talking about Harper - Harper was filmed prior to the song being written. The Drowning Pool was the sequel in the 70s.

Good Evening!
Greetings from Arena Stage!

I managed to get all of my errands done in a very timely and non-rushed manner. I also finally took this beautiful(!) suit jacket to the tailor to see how much it would cost to have the sleeves adjusted. I had to ask him to repeat the cost of the alteration twice since it was about 1/3 of what I thought it was going go cost. -Then I remembered that I wasn't in NYC. ;)

I've dumped all the footage on my main computer, save for one clip that seems to be corrupted but I was able to view it on the hard drive and it's not a take I need. It's pretty funny stuff and the actors are great. The part of the pianist that Jose was going to do was done by a one of Barry's co-stars in Baby, It's You, Brandon Uranovsky (sp?) - I keep him in the background of a lot of shots and he's really funny back there - if anyone's eye happens to wander I think it will make them laugh - plus I have close-ups of him, too.
-
thanks, all, for the vibes and congratulations.

According to wikipedia. An instrumental version was indeed used in the drowning pool and Charles fox received credit for conductor and composer.
I thought you were watching HARPER? THE DROWNING POOL is a sequel and it does contain the song.
Never mind. Shut up! Issue settled, but I am not deleting my posts.

BK, both Julieanne and I heard KIlling Me Softly that threaded through the score, usually somewhere in the scenes with Newman and Woodward. I didn't notice who did the score and if it was the same composer of the original song, but we're both pretty sure that was the song we heard.
Killing Me Softly was written for Lori Lieberman by Charles Fox and Norman Gimbel in 1971 after Lori heard Don McLean in concert one evening and told them how much he had moved her. That said, DR Pogue, Charles Fox's music bears a very marked similarity to Mandel a lot of the time.
-
There's a nice, if not especially soulful, version of Killing Me Softly on Sergio Mendes' first Bell album, featuring the sunny voiced Bonnie Bowden. Nice Lydian breaks on the Rhodes in that version.

Just had a minor email scare: Qwest divorced itself from MSN several months ago but told those of us with MSN accounts we could still access them through Hotmail. And then of course I divorced myself from Qwest, as was brilliantly documented here. ;) Today all of a sudden I got server errors for hours trying to access email and I thought I had been had. Luckily everything's back.

I'm working on a choral arrangement of The Kingdom by Icehouse in preparation for my fall Pops concert.

I never knew that was about Don McLean. I've seen him in concert....he does sort of have a gaze as if he's looking right through you as if you aren't there.....LOL...well until Samantha, who was very young and slept in the second row through most of the concert, walked up to him after the concert and told him it was the best thing she'd ever seen in her life.... he cracked up.
-
Lori's version is quite haunting and in some ways I like it better than Roberta's.
-
I always liked Charles Fox's music, though he never quite made it into that Mandel stratum of composers.
-
I hope Bryan finds a new place quickly, Jane.

DS Bryan could use some vibes. He doesn't have a place to live beginning tomorrow.
Home sweet home vibes for DS Bryan

DR's Laura & John G thanks for the vibes.
DR JMK thank you for the kind & generous offer. I just called Bryan, who really didn't have a place as of a few hours ago, & he is with a friend in Tigard where he will crash until he leaves Portland on the 26th.

One of the Ritz Bros. is now in drag. And getting hit on my his brothers. It ain't pretty.
But the song is "Slumming on Park Avenue," one of my favorite Berlin tunes, thanks to a Bobby Short recording.
-
DR Jane - I hope Bryan's housing situation is resolved soon. Rob has spent all day online looking at apartments in Cincinnati.

It turns out I know a bunch of people doing the Chicago show, so I think it will be a blast. I've booked the flight and hotel.
-
When is the Chicago show?
-
Looks like it's the beginning of Oct. I'll be in Chicago later in the month for a seminar. Too bad it isn't the same time
-
;D
-
Hi
Ben & Jerry's pistachio ice cream for dinner, yum. 8)
-
HEALTH VIBES FOR EVERYONE WHO NEEDS THEM. :) :) :) :) :) :) :)
-
Not much else going on here.
Time to go, get ready for Thursday.
Night everyone.
Sweet dreams.
;)
-
Sometimes, boring, is just nice and peaceful.
No tums, no aspirin, no stress. ;D
-
Good Evening!
Another good show. Another great(!) audience.
-
And after tonight's show, Arena hosted a "piano bar" in the lobby. It was the first time they had tried something like this, and it was quite successful. A whole bunch of audience members stayed for the open mic (and the bar). Audience members were allowed to sign up to sing during intermission, and a couple of cast members also sang. Fun!

Yep, it's October 1 and 2.
*If it was later in the month, I would try to make it out there too.

And...
Goodnight.

PAGE EIGHT DANCE!!
-
And now, after watching some TV, I'm off to bed. I need to get more sleep...and get to work earlier. I've slowly been getting to work a tiny bit later and later. I need to buckle down Winsocki and be more diligent about getting to work at a more consistent time. :-\
At least, that's the plan. :)
