Well, you've read the notes, the notes were out of touch, and now it is time for you to post until the out of touch cows come home.
-
And the word of the day is: BELLWETHER!
-
After rushing to go to sleep last night, I'm now awake way too early.
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Good Morning!
I'm up, I'm up...

Always Remember. Never Forget.

DR JohnG - My condolences to you and your family.
-
I think I have a long day ahead of me. I say "think" because according to the schedule I'm looking at, it appears that I start at 9:00am, and then end at 8:00pm. However, that also includes a one hour lunch break, the two-hour dance call (which I don't play) and the hour and a half dinner break. Not too bad. I hope. ;)
-
And speaking of my long/not-so-long day...
Laters...
-
Good morning from sunny (for a change) Northern Virginia!
-
Condolences to DR John G.
-
Good morning, all.
-
Distracted this morning. Work and play and personal and everything else.
-
Good morning. So far, this very highly-hyped three-day downpour of rain has left me 0.00 inches of rain.
-
I love Kristin Bell!
-
It is a bright and sunny lovely fall day - the tribute ceremony is being conducted at the former site of the Towers --- they are reciting the names of the lost and the TV brings up that persons photo, name town and age
I cannot watch anymore... I must go to church
I also have a memorial service for an old friend who passed away recently it will be a day of remembrance---
my prayers today are with all that grieve that they may receive solace especially our own dear John G
-
Good morning, all! I slept well and I slept late. I will not venture too far from the apartment today, and I hop to accomplish some work here. At some point I will trn on the television but I do not want to get caught up in too much 9/11 reportage.
Last night I watched a charming, funny, very sexy adaptation of Robert Louis Stevenson's ST. IVES with a wonderful cast. I've never read the story, which was completed by Arthur Quller Couch since Stevenson died before finishing it, but the film has a lot of sass and an excellent cast.
-
Yesterday I was truly angry over the macinery problems at Toyland and I was quite vitriolic about my talented friend Curtis, whose talents as a writer, performer, and technical whiz continue to amaze me. Frustrated as I was, I do care for him enormously as a friend and wish him all the best. I hope that he and I will continue to work together for many years to come and I wish he'd get back to the States because I need his help on several projects!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Healing Vibes for all in grief today, especially the families and friends of 9/11 victims ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
-
Condolences to DR JOHNG and the family of Uncle Tom.
-
I cannot watch any of the coverage today, until I return from the 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony....it will be hard enough to get through.
-
I shall return this afternoon.
Keep the home fries burning.
-
I've been watching the 9/11 ceremonies.
Very moving, but one can only watch them for so long without getting totally depressed.
-
Continued vibes-- to everyone-- for everything.
-
And the word of the day is: BELLWETHER!
And The Song Of The Day Is: LEADER OF THE PACK
-
Good morning. I woke up much earlier than I planned, but I was awake so I got up and have watched all the 9-11 ceremonies and observed the moments of silence. I was surprised how raw my emotions still are. I had forgotten how early everything was over...well the attacks were over. Since we were all waiting to see what happens next, it seems like the attacks lasted all day.
-
I, on the other hand, am up.
-
I cannot watch coverage on TV or read coverage online - in the old days of Huntley and Brinkley I might have, but I cannot do so with any of the news people today or with the way news departments put these stories together.
-
I cannot watch anymore... I must go to church
I'm teary-eyed, too. BUT, I have returned from church where I sang Irving Berlin's "God Bless America." (and teared up there, too). We even had a piper (as in bagpiper) there as well; I haven't heard a piper since my days at CMU.
-
DR Vixmom condolences on the loss of your friend. Wishes the memorial is comforting.
-
So, where were you on that morning? I was awakened by a telephonic call from Vinnie, my engineer, telling me to turn on the TV and that it was the end of the world.
-
I was in the Maricopa County jury room.
-
The concrete trial?
-
I was on my way to work when I first heard that a plane had hit the trade center. It was on the radio, but they thought it was some small plane. When I went into the federal building where I worked I went into Senator Grassley's SC office where I knew there was a television. That was the first I saw what was going on. I watched for a few minutes and went to the elevator to go to my office. My phone rang and my secretary told me we had to evacuate.
I went home and watched the tv for awhile and then went to the blood bank where there were literally hundreds and hundreds of people lined up to give blood. The whole day was surreal, as I'm sure it was for everyone. My nephew had just gone to London the week before or so, with no planes flying we had no idea when he would be able to come home. We have a fighter wing here, so the fighter jets were flying over. Every time I heard one of the jets it made me jump a bit.
I don't remember much else except not being able to get away from watching the tv, whether I really wanted to or not
-
I was in London.
-
How long was it before you could get home, Elmore?
-
I did my laundry this morning while watching tv. Now I need to vacuum the house and then go to the office for a few hours.
-
I was at the office and my sister called from Minneapolis asking if I was OK because a plane had flown into the WTC. I thought, as many did, that it was a small commuter plane or something else. The news web sites were mobbed and I couldn't get on. I called Anthony and told him to call his mother so she wouldn't worry. We were still at work but I ran home for a few minutes to make sure all was OK. I went back and soon after that we closed for the day. Anthony and I went out and bought some groceries and I made lots of phone calls locally and to Minnesota to assure everyone that wer were OK and well removed from the carnage. We watched a lot of news that day though after a while it became the same stuff over and over so we stopped. Even if we wanted to leave we couldn't because all transportation had been shut down, no trains to Long Island or anywhere else. The subway had shut down and the streets were empty except for people walking. We went out later in the day around 5pm and walked to the river. As we arrived we say WTC Tower 7 fall.
My office was closed the next day. I slept fitfully and late not knowing what else could happen.
-
I was packing up my condo in Calabasas, preparing for our move into Los Angeles.
My wife called me and told me to turn on the television.
-
I had just stepped out of the shower and was reading rec.arts.theatre.musicals where a message appeared that the World Trade Center had been hit by a plane. I turned on The Today Show immediately, continued reading RATM, before heading into work at Sam Morgan's. We tuned all of our 13 tv screens to live coverage, and though I was only scheduled to work until 2, I stayed until 7, waiting tables and watching.
-
How long was it before you could get home, Elmore?
My return ticket was Sept 22, so the airports were open for about a week before I flew back. Rosemary Harris was stuck in London because of the canceled flights, so she came every day to the studio - Henry Wood Hall - and hung out with us.
MSNBC is broadcasting the actual news broadcast from 9/11, and I'm finding it interesting in that I'm finally hearing what was broadcast and speculated on here instead of in London. The footage on London tv was excellent but much more violent than the news footage I've seen from American networks; I remember shots of people jumping from the buildings and other frightening things. Of course, the same may have been shown here and now it's been edited out for taste.
-
Good Afternoon!
I'm done for the day, except for a brief session of callbacks at 6:30. I may venture out to dinner later, but I'm also thinking of just treating myself to room service and watching TV for a bit. The hotel's cable system has HBO and Food Network(!). :)
-
Hello, everyone.
I have not caught up on the posts, so...
-
John G, I'm very sorry to hear about your uncle. It came at an especially sorrowful time. Vibes of comfort to you and your family.
-
And, of course, vibes of healing to all Americans. Some were affected more directly than others, but we we all touched to some degree.
-
I was still in Richmond at the time. I had just flown back from SETC the day before - it was in Charlotte that year - and was sleepily watching "The Today Show" when they showed the first plane flying into the Tower...
After some frantic calls to my parents and brothers, as well as chatting via AIM with friends in NYC, Steve told me to head to the hospital (where he was working) to have some lunch and take a break from all of the coverage on TV.
On the first anniversary of 9/11, I was on a plane down to Orlando... Flying out of National Airport. Needless to say, I was a bit wary and worried that day. And it, too, was another beautiful day, sunny and blue skies.
-
...I started to watch some of the coverage of the ceremony at Ground Zero before I headed down to play auditions this morning... It took me a while to pry myself away from the verge of tears.
-
I was in the shower when I heard one siren after another after another after another. I kept thinking there must be a huge fire nearby. Well, yes. At the Pentagon, just a couple miles from where I lived. A neighbor who lived down the block from me worked there--in that wing, even. She got out safely, but many of her coworkers, of course, did not.
-
OK...
Time for a nap.
Laters...
-
Yes, Jose, the skies were as blue and sunny as it gets. An absolutely gorgeous day weatherwise. Each time we'd have another day like that--there weren't usually that many--I'd think about what had happend--with sorrow and dread.
-
As for the news media, I too have my quarrels. Coverage of an event while it is occurring is one thing, but every time someone mentions 9/11 they show those horrible shots of the towers burning. I truly believe that the news media contributed to the trauma we all suffered by repeating the visuals sooo many times, long after the event.
-
Sunday afternoon greetings! Richard and I listened to the first 45 minutes of the WTC commemoration on our way to Lima this morning. We are back now, relaxing a bit before heading to the Cincinnati 'burbs to see DR Edi's film Jews and Baseball: An American Love Story (http://nhs-cba.org/JewsInBaseball9-11-11.htm).
-
JRand, yes, I agree with you. Mother's Heartbeat is the best CD for sleeping. I especially like the sound of the ocean on the first track. Fortunately, my neighbors were spoken to--again--and so far have been quieter. Now I only need the CDs for my occasional bouts of insomnia.
-
Bruce, you mentioned redesigning the website. May I suggest that you think long and hard about this? I have seen one website after another revamped and NOT for the better. What seems like a good idea to young programmers USUALLY ISN'T a good idea in the eyes of the users. I've had to stop using more than one site because of these "improvements." In fact, I'm unhappy with Google at the moment because they make so many changes, which just get in my way.
I would suggest that you take a very targeted approach by changing only what really needs it, and not disturbing the "look" of the site. You may not realize it, but HHW has a distinctive look, which is very YOU, I think. If you change the look you'll be telling users that you've changed HHW, that it's a different animal now, whether you think so or not.
And besides, YOU'RE the one who always says how you hate change!!
10 years ago today, I was in the telephone reference center of Dayton's Main Library helping my colleagues get ready to open for the day. As DR Ben described, our computers were useless until the news outlets went to text-only and we had a manager who thought there was no need for a TV. Fortunately, someone had a radio that we kept on all day.
The library remained very quiet all day and the higher-ups kept saying, "No, we're not closing early." Then, at 5:25pm there was a very abrupt PA announcement that all Dayton Metro Library locations would be closing at 6pm. We were wondering what prompted that sudden decision when there was an explosion or something that shook the plate glass windows. As we walked to our cars, we saw fighter jets returning to Wright Patterson Air Force Base that we learned later had been part of President Bush's escort back to Washington. Apparently, the explosion was a sonic boom, but it made for a very scary drive home. When I got here, I hugged my family and sat down in front of the TV for my first glimpse of the day's visuals.
Rob had turned 16 on the 7th, but I've always felt that his childhood ended on the 11th.
-
Ah, yes, the fighter planes. I knew the sound because I used to drive by Miramar Navel Air Station in San Diego sometimes on my way to work. It came up in conversation one day a few months after the attacks. I realized that many people did not recognize the sound.
Fr. Richard incorporated this into today's liturgy:
A Prayer of Remembrance for 9/11 -Based on the Prayer of Pope Benedict XI at Ground Zero,
New York, 20 April 2008
O God of love, compassion, and healing, look on those who remember the scenes of incredible violence and pain ten years ago.
We ask you in your goodness to give eternal light and peace to all who died — the heroic first-responders:
our fire fighters, police officers, emergency service workers, and Port Authority personnel, along with all the innocent men and women who were victims of this tragedy simply because their work or service on September 11, 2001.
We ask you, in your compassion to bring healing to those who, because of being at the Trade Center that day,
suffer from injuries and illness.
Heal, too, the pain of still-grieving families and all who lost loved ones in this tragedy. Give them strength to continue their lives with courage and hope.
We are mindful as well of those who suffered death, injury, and loss on the same day at the Pentagon and in
Shanksville, Pennsylvania.
Our hearts are one with theirs as our prayer embraces their pain and suffering.
God of peace, bring your peace to our violent world: peace in the hearts of all men and women and peace among the nations of the earth. Turn to your way of love those whose hearts and minds are consumed with hatred.
God of understanding, overwhelmed by the magnitude of this tragedy, we seek your light and guidance as we confront such terrible events.
Grant that those whose lives were spared may live so that the lives lost here may not have been lost in vain.
Comfort and console us, strengthen us in hope, and give us the wisdom and courage to work tirelessly for a world where true peace and love reign among nations and in the hearts of all.
This we ask in thy Son’s Holy Name.
AMEN
-
I wish everyone here a day of peace.
Quite eloquent, Ginny.
I think what happened 10 years ago today had a lot to do with Rob's decision to become a paramedic. Fitting that he starts his new job in that field day after tomorrow.
-
My parents are on their way back from NYC today (from their cruise).
-
I am sort of happy. I tried on 3 pairs of my "small" pants not thinking that there was any chance that they would fit. But i could actually do up the zippers and buttons on all 3 pairs! They were a little snug and i probably would not be comfortable wearing them yet. But I was pretty happy they all did up!
-
It was such a nice day here today. So sunny, so warm. Well it was supposed to be high 60s in the morning. But i was boiling hot at my niece's soccer tournament. This afternoon was supposed to be 75F. But i went biking in shorts and a tank top. So it must have been warmer than that.
-
back from a very full day so far
we used a prayer very liek the one Fr Richard used and like TD's church we closed with a Patriotic song only we used My Country Tis of Thee
-
Then after church I had to meet some friends at a local cematary at the gravesite of another of our friends who passed away recently at the young age of 58
it was a nice little service - only 7 of us were there but we all shared some memories of Tom and several others who could not be there today had send memories which were read out
-
then back to my church where we had a 9/11 vigil in the chapel and our annual "Rally Day" barbeque going on in the back yard -
-
and now I am finally home and exhausted
-
Last night when we were coming home from New Jersey there were security stops on the entries to the bridges
I wouldn't have expected you to be mentioning fighter jets. I can imagine they would be a bit unnerving. Bryan planned to donate blood. Since I had read about the lines I told him not to stay if there were any & to donate later. He donates on a regular basis and they would call if they needed him.
-
I was in London.
I had local friends in Spain & said it was hard not being here. I imagine it was worse for you since it was your home town that was hit. Craig had just left NY after his summer there & a part of him was sorry he couldn't be there.
On that day 10 years ago I had a real estate closing. At that time I was still working in that other law firm 30 miles west of my house on the Queens/Nassau border, but on that morning I was scheduled for a 9 AM closing at our satellite office out in Suffolk county east of my home.
I was listening to a book on tape on my way into the office so I did not hear about the first plane on the radio - when I arrived at the office (we only rented spaced there from another law firm so we could conduct closings there as needed had no regular employees there) everyone was in the back office so I assumed that law firm was having a office meeting so I quietly went to the conference room and set out the paperwork and got the room ready - people started wandering in for my closing but everyone was late and looking very grim
I did not have a clue what was going on so I made some small stupid joke to try and break the tension and one of the attorneys looked at me and said - "You didn't hear did you?"
at that point both towers had been hit and were in flames - I immediately asked if I could excuse myself to try and make some phone call s- my husband worked only a few blocks from there then and my brother was due to be at Tower 2 at 8:30 for a meeting
Because all the phone lines were busy it took a while to reach my husband -who was safe (he was unable to get home until late that night because they had stopped all the trains and no car were allowed to enter the city so I could not go get him)
and I was able to get in touch with my parents who had had word that my brother was delayed getting to his meeting and had never made it downtown at all
It was not until the next day that I learned my cousin was due to be in the plane the crashed into the Pentagon - the meeting he was scheduled to attend had been cancelled the evening of the 10th
we were very lucky
-
I was just back from a clipper ship cruise off the coast of Maine. Any est and relaxation i had left in me evaporated that day.
My folks had left the evening before for Ireland and we didn't know really how to each them over there. As we found out later, they had missed their connection and stayed overnight in JFK. The next morning they couldn't take off. And they couldn't get out of the airport, either.
Five days later, my sister and her husband had to stage a rescue mission and drive from Richmond, Va., to JFK. Thankfully, Dad had his insulin with him and Mom had her high blood pressure medicine.
They still haven't made it to Ireland, but they certainly had an adventure they were not ready for.
Interesting.
Nice sermon by Father Richard.
My parents are on their way back from NYC today (from their cruise).
SAFE & EASY TRAVEL VIBES!
I hope they enjoyed their cruise in spite of the itinerary changes.
-
After my closing was over I had planned to go to my office regular office but the expressway had signs that all west bound traffic was forbidden except to emergency responders
I called my office and my boss told me that they were sending everyone home to be with their families any way
I decided to go to the school and sign out the then 8 year old Vixter - concerned that she would hear the news from some one else - I found the lobby full of parents with the same idea
to their credit everyone was calm and revealed nothing of what was going on in front of the children as they were coming out
In explaining to my 8 year old daughter what had happened that day I suddenly flashed back to my Daddy sitting down with the 6 year old me to explain President Kennedy's assasination
-
and has anyone heard from TCB?
-
DR Vixmom your stories of the day are very moving. I'm glad your cousin wasn't lost that day.
-
Interesting finds today at Borders, including the Tom Wopat/Harold Arlen album, Jane Krakoski (sp?) and "Fela!" And I spent too much on books, only a few of which will be Christmas/birthday presents.
-
and has anyone heard from TCB?
I checked FB & he did make one quick post a little while ago.:)
-
I probably wouldn't change the look of the site, and it would operate in much the same way it does now, but with current software that will allow us to do things we can't do, like post video and audio clips, have working links, interviews, etc.
-
Has JMK been around here? I don't think so. Surely his Bar Mitzvah thing has been over for a week now and he has been posting reviews. He's not even responded to an e-mail I sent to him two weeks ago.
-
Looks like his most recent post was August 29
-
Glad TCB is OK
I was still in bed when Keith said the early phone call was from Craig who was up early to take a friend to the San Francisco airport. Of course the flight had been canceled. He then turned the tv on for us to watch.
I was hosting my book discussion gathering that morning & had to call everyone to, first inform them of the horrible news if they hadn't heard, and then find out if they wanted to still come. I can't remember what the book was only that the discussion fit the events. A number of people came & it was helpful for us to gather. Craig & Bryan felt I should have canceled, but then Craig wasn't here & Bryan was returning to Portland that afternoon. Keith went out to work in the yard which would have left me all alone.
The phone kept ringing with updates regarding Bryan's many friends in NY. My brother called with updates regarding his daughter who was so frightened after the first crash she was on the phone with her mother when the 2nd one happened. At least we knew immediately she was ok. One of her roommates was missing all morning. All missing friends were eventually accounted for. They were all found when someone thought to call their parents. Phone service was so bad the first calls were made to worried parents.
-
I'm guessing he missed your email or meant to respond later & forgot. I would send it again if you want a response.
-
I've probably mentioned that Keith flew home on the Pennsylvania flight on September 9th. He returned from a business trip I had wanted to go on and was very disappointed not to make it happen. Had I managed the trip the plan was to return a couple of days later.
-
I was living with my sister. I was half asleep but woke up when I heard hear almost yelling, "Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god!" I got out of bed and she told me what she'd heard so far. By the time she had woken up and heard the news, the second plane had already hit. I don't remember much else about that day, but that evening, I had some meeting to go to and all we talked about was what had happened in New York.
-
I'm at my sister's right now (my Internet is still not working) and have caught up with all the posts and my e-mail. I'm about to leave to go to a Seattle Storm basketball game in Seattle. I'd heard that there was a soccer game at 1:00 and some 9/11 tributes happening this morning, so hopefully the traffic won't be too bad. The basketball game doesn't start until 6:00 pm.
-
Well, be back...whenever.
I've been ordering out of print books on Fred MacMurray and Bob Hope.
I hope I can see my barber tomorrow while I am out and about. I need to run down to Toyland and stop by the Marquis to pick up my ticket for FOLLIES.
I'm reading DAVID COPPERFIELD.
"Child bride," isn't her name Dora?, one of the worst, droopiest heroines Dickens ever created. I do love Aunt Betsy and the Micawbers.
Richard and I are back from Northern Hills Synagogue where we attended the joint meeting of their men's and women's clubs for a screening of JEWS & BASEBALL. We thoroughly enjoyed the film along with the 40 or so others who were there. Afterwards, a couple of the men and the wife of one gave us the grand tour of the building, including the Kosher kitchen.
-
Watching "Funny Lady" for the first time in decades. When I was a kid, I saw this movie on its original release and really enjoyed it. Now, it seems not as good as the soundtrack. And did Sarah Vaughn ever comment on how Barbra seems to have copied her rendition of "Great Day" right down to the "rooty-tootin'"?
It was a very nice evening, DR John G. With a 5:30am wake-up and 4 hours on the road, we usually don't go anywhere on Sunday evenings. But I wanted to see DR Edi's film, so tonight we made an exception and I'm glad we did.
I'll need to find it. The version with Ralph Richardson as Micawber is just lousy. Not the acting, so much as the editing. It was shredded to bits.
I hadn't seen it for 9 years.
Still a great movie.
I had my final ministry class today.
I decided to put together a video remembrance for 9-11.
I used Laurie Beechman's version of Beautiful City from her album No One Is Alone.
The class especially like Ms. Beechman vocal.
It's my favorite version of the song.
Life just flies when you work at Staples..... so said the guy who waited on me the other night
I have chigger bites on my ankles. I think they are from movie night
-
And yes, I'm sure they are chigger bites
I was getting ready for work and watching the KTLA morning news showing NY. Just as the 1st tower came down I called into the other room for my husband to watch this, was it real or a movie, it was all very surreal and hard to believe.
Then we went to work, school, etc.
The next day at work for me was different. I work in a machine shop that makes parts for aircraft. Everything went into this quite uncomfortable strangeness. One of our employee's wife, was part of the first wave of air strikes, and I remember him saying that in the middle of the night, 5 black suv's arrived at his house and she was gone. Only thing they could talk about by phone was the kids. My boss had to have a clearance badge to go to the companies the shop makes parts for. Stuff like that.
Is it 8:30 already. The weekend is gone.
I know I went to friends car shop Friday night and watched them drop an engine out of a car.
I know I took my car in yesterday and then went to dinner and walked Main Street.
I know I went to a meeting this morning and then to breakfast.
I know I went to listen to music this afternoon and then took a walk on the pier.
I know that i feel like i might have a new new boyfriend. Now I'm just in that strange mode of anticipation.
Time to get ready for work and the week ahead.
Mega vibes for everyone. Health and happiness. Hugs and kisses.
I hate bug bites.
Took a long time to get used to living in Ventura. Bugs and animals and things that move all day and night.
Things I never saw before, and now just avoid if I can. Eyes in the night, flashes of fast moving tails, things whizzing by in the air.
Night, sweet dreams.
Night, all.
CillaLiz, I hope the chigger bites get better soon. I have suffered from those in the past and no they are no fun.
