Post by: bk on September 21, 2011, 12:27:27 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes will now be turned into a musical, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently turning several MOOvies into MOOsicals.

I'm up and announcing.  Here's our new release - you can just go to the site to order.

Kritzerland is proud to present a limited edition soundtrack release – world premiere of the complete score:

THELMA & LOUISE
Music Composed by Hans Zimmer

Sometimes the right people come together at the right time to make the right movie for the right audience.  Certainly it happened in 1991 with Thelma & Louise, a film where each of its creative elements came together and resulted in a film that truly struck a chord with audiences and critics.  A road movie, a buddy movie, a comedy, a tragedy, Thelma & Louise became an instant classic.  Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis are perfection as Thelma and Louise, both delivering multi-layered and iconic performances.  Harvey Keitel is their equal as Detective Hal Slocumb, and Michael Madsen, Christopher McDonald, and Brad Pitt are all excellent in supporting roles.

Every creative component of the film is masterful – from direction, writing, acting, editing, photography, art direction, costuming – it’s all of a piece and that includes the great score by Hans Zimmer.  Zimmer, born in 1957, had begun scoring films on his own in the 1980s, with projects such as A World Apart, Paperhouse, and others.  But it was in 1988 that he got his big break, scoring the Barry Levinson film Rain Man.  Rain Man was a smash, and Zimmer received his first Oscar nomination.  Then came Twister, Black Rain, and Driving Miss Daisy, and since then he has been one of the most successful film composers in history, composing scores for such hits as Days Of Thunder, A League Of Their Own, The Lion King, As Good As It Gets, Crimson Tide, The Rock, The Prince Of Egypt, Gladiator, Hannibal, Pearl Harbor, Black Hawk Down, Batman Begins, The Da Vinci Code, Pirates of the Caribbean 2 and 3, Kung Fu Panda, Sherlock Holmes, Inception, and many, many others.  He has been nominated for eight Academy Awards and taken home the prize once – for The Lion King.

Zimmer’s score for Thelma & Louise captures Scott’s visuals and the tone of the film perfectly.  While there are a fair number of pop songs used in the movie, it’s Zimmer’s twangy, mournful, exciting, hard-driving, bluesy music that really propels the film and helps give it its distinctive feel – and it features the absolutely mind-bending guitar work of the great Pete Haycock.

Thelma & Louise had a soundtrack release on MCA that was all songs save for one four-minute track, “Thunderbird.”   That track was assembled specifically for that album and was not used in the film in that form ever.  It basically pieced together parts of three different cues to make the one four-minute track.  For this first ever release of the film score, we present all the music as Zimmer recorded it for its use in the film.   As sometimes happens, a few of the cues were shortened for the movie, but we left them in their entirety for the CD.  As a bonus, we also include the “Main Title” cue exactly as it is edited in the movie (it’s comprised of two score cues).  It’s a real pleasure to finally bring Zimmer’s wonderful score to CD – it’s been way too long in coming.

This release is limited to 1200 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the last week of October – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I am up much, much, much (that's three muches) too darned early...well, for me. ;)

Today is our All Staff Training Day (ASTD, in Timberland lingo).  Years ago, it used to just be All Staff Day, but then they added the word "Training" to it...and then they started using the letters ASTD...and now all I ever think of when I see that is "A Sexually Transmitted Disease." ::)

See?  I did learn something in high school!

I also liked the second half of GLEE better - Darren Criss plays one of my favorite characters on the show.  I also liked the girl from the GLEE PROJECT.

Chris Colfer is just so bad that I can't even watch or listen to him - there were some interesting developments to be explored although the device of Quinn and her new friends seems very forced....

I liked NEW GIRL - but most of the jokes in the first show had been shown repeatedly in promos since July, that a lot of the humor was gone from them....we shall see.....and I think Coach has been recast since the pilot, so Wayans Jr is off the show - he is in something else....

Regarding movies into musicals:

I don't think that the source of a musical is as important as what the creators do with it.

I know that some people disagree, but I love RAGTIME.  It's one of my all time favorite musicals.

On the other hand, I thought that SUNSET BOULEVARD, aside from a couple of terrific songs, was a bore.  Like BK, says, "It's like watching the movie on stage".  [We saw it in London with Petula Clark, who was great.]

Personally, a good musical is one where I leave the theater humming most of the songs.  These days, you're lucky to find one memorable song in a stage musical.

I guess that's why they keep reviving Rogers and Hammerstein.

As for last night's season premiere of "Glee": it is what it is. (Or was what it was.) It's not a perfect show, but I still find it entertaining. -And I'm happy for my friends who have picked up some very gainful from being cast in the series.

2 ASK BK QUESTIONS

1) Are the webisodes standalones or do they have an "arc"?

Not sure if I ever asked the question before, but.......

2) You used Mark Rutland for your director credit on the film Prime Suspect. Did you "borrow" the name from Sean Connery's character in Marnie?

I don't like "arcs" so no, at least not now.  They have one recurring character, only heard, never seen.

And yes, Mark Rutland was cadged from Marnie.

So, I finished reading a biography of Sal (WHO KILLED TEDDY BEAR?) Mineo. . .who knew that he an Bobby (HERE COME THE BRIDES) Sherman were an item?!?!?!

You, if you'd hung out here a little more in the past year! ;D

DR JRand61 and I discussed it, much to DR Druxy's disbelief, as I recall.

I am sorry I missed that discussion!  :(

To go from white-bread Bobby Sherman to bad-boy Don Johnson (though, according to DJ, never consummated) just shows what a versatile player Sal Mineo was.  ;)

Now, I must get around to seeing CHEYENNE AUTUMN. . .

JRand, sigh. I was in the audience at many tapings. I know that several of them were for THE LUCY SHOW, as Lucy was my dad's "boss" at the time (Desilu). IIRC (and I may not), I was also there for THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW and THE DANNY THOMAS SHOW. But I cannot tell you which seasons or give any details about the shows. Sorry. And I do not have a loud or distinctive laugh (thankfully).

Ginny, if it bothers you that others know what's on your Kindle, how about this:

I recently received an email from a retailer, advertising a sale. I briefly looked at their merchandise (through the email), but chose not to purchase anything. A day or two later I received a second email from them, saying that they saw that I'd looked at their merchandise but didn't purchase. Then they asked me why I wasn't buying from them!! I can understand why they'd want to know, but it did strike me as pushy!!

How about "Thelma and Louise: The Musical"? Big car goes sailing off the stage at the end of the show as the orchestra swells and our Thelma and Louise sing one of those "Take off and let's go flying" songs that "Will Rogers Follies" and "Take Flight" were all about. They sharpened the edges of the cookie cutter. We just have to cut it out!

Seriously it was fun.  The attitude is really great, everyone just wants to play and enjoy music.  I realized it's been 30 years since I was actively a flute performance major.  Several of the members said "Don't worry, it will all come back"  Everyone is supportive.  The first chair flute is a very young band director at a local school.  She said she's only first chair because no one else wanted it.  Now that's the attitude I need.  We have a lot of music and our first concert is October 23.  I'm going to be practicing a lot between now and next Wednesday.  Tonight i did way too much watching the notes go by

Thanks Laura, I really did.  I tried to join a group like this in Mesa when I lived there.  The flute section was not at all welcoming or friendly and I only went for a couple weeks before quitting.   I was a bit concerned I'd find the same thing here, but it's the opposite.  If you're interested, here's the band website

Oh and re: Glee what did anyone who watched think of Lindsay (from the Glee Project)?  I thought she was unbelievable.

I didn't watch The Glee Project, so I didn't know who she was.

In case anybody doesn't know who Lindsay was on Glee. She was the girl who starred in the "Anything Goes" number that made Rachel feel so sad!

It's a cool organization.  100% corporate sponsorship so what they do is play concerts only for qualifying non-profit organizations and 100% of all ticket sales go to the nonprofit.  Pretty cool. I guess they get a number of applications from nonprofits each year asking to be beneficiaries of the band concerts

I joined a community chorus once, but I found the people were unfriendly. I didn't have any fun. No reason to continue.

There's a community choruse in my home town called Many Voices.   We called it many vices as the events at the local pub after practice resulted in a few divorces and new marriages

Oh dear DR MBARNUM I was looking forward to the musical version of VIKING WOMEN AND THE SEA SERPENT.....

I think Sunja's solo song could become an anthem......

I however will continue to work on my stage musical version of ATTACK OF THE 50 FOOT WOMAN - the finale featuring the song:

"Harry - I Know Where He Is - He's With that Woman!" will have the audience members out of their seats.

Vibes for good food for DR GEORGE at the ASTD.

DR George - have fun at ASTD!  I used to enjoy those days when I worked at Dayton Metro.

Thanks Jack and Ginny!  I survived ASTD.  It was actually pretty fun.  The keynote speaker was Garth Stein, who wrote (among others) "The Art of Racing In the Rain (http://www.amazon.com/Art-Racing-Rain-Novel/dp/0061537969/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1316663257&sr=1-1)," a novel told from the point of view of a dog.  Not really spoilers here but he dies at the beginning of the book and I think it's about him telling about his life with his owners and something about dog reincarnation.  I bought a copy, but I missed getting his autograph.  Oh, well.  It does sound like a very good book, so I think I'll read it anyway. ;)

For the lunch, they had make-your-own burritos or taco salads.  It was all quite good, but I think I got too much of the beans...if you know what I'm sayin'. :o Fortunately, the side effects of too much beans didn't start appearing until I got home...which is where I am now.

I almost forgot, Garth Stein also mentioned that the movie rights to "The Art of Racing in the Rain" have been sold, so people were kind of excited about that.

AND every other year, Timberland Library does Timberland Reads Together (http://www.trl.org/ProgramsResources/Pages/TRT11/TRT.aspx), and "The Art of Racing in the Rain" is this year's book.

Hey...if they can make Disney's "101 Dalmatians" into a musical, anything can happen. ;)

As for last night's season premiere of "Glee": it is what it is. (Or was what it was.) It's not a perfect show, but I still find it entertaining. -And I'm happy for my friends who have picked up some very gainful from being cast in the series.

Also, in the lunch jam scene, the blond guy playing the guitar in the band is from Olympia!  His name is Derik and I was in a couple of shows with him!  But that was a long time ago.

Richard just tried to borrow the Kindle version of a book from Dayton Metro Library and was told that he already has that content on his e-reader.  I find that a little creepy.

They just announced at our All Staff Training Day today that the Kindle format was live on the library's website!  We thought that it wouldn't be ready until closer to the end of the year.  I've already checked out a downloadable library book for my Kindle!

Both Thelma AND Louise are now sold out at Kritzerland.  Our next release, as some know, will be our Very Very Special Special Edition of Chitty, Chitty, Bang, Bang - which now looks like it will be a two CD set.

Hoo and Ray!! ;D

Cillaliz, it sounds like a lot of fun!  Hope you enjoy the whole experience!

I don't have a problem with turning a movie into a musical.  Loved HAIRSPRAY, loved LEGALLY BLONDE...I'm sure there are others.  I think it's worse to try to turn a musical into a movie..like Mama Mia,

...or "The Producers." ::)
