Well, you've read the notes, the notes are hopefully not to jejune in June, and now it is time to bust out all over and post until the cows come home.

(From last week's Globe and Mail - The Producers to Close Early)

In a surprise announcement, impresario David Mirvish said [The Producers] is closing after only nine months (331 performances) - the apparent victim of sluggish tourist traffic from the U.S. and a widely noted change in how consumers spend their dollars.

The show at the Canon Theatre had originally been expected to run for at least a year.

But whereas theatregoers once booked tickets months in advance, they increasingly tend to make buying decisions within a much shorter time frame. The result is that the show's advance ticket sales for the next few months have been looking frighteningly soft.

But sources close to the Mirvish organization maintain the central problem in Toronto has been a noticeable shrinkage of American tourists - a critically important part of building a successful show. Of the 70 million people who live within a six-hour drive of Toronto, some 58 million are Americans. Their presence or absence is even more noticeable during the summer months.

Sorry about pooping out last night. I had fallen asleep in my chair at some point before 9 p.m. and woke up at 11:10. I was so exhausted, I just dragged myself to bed and didn't even get back on the internet all night. I had looked forward to chat since it was going to be my first in many weeks, but the Sandman came calling first.

Omigod!

It's the day of DR KEITH AND JANE'S Anniversary! ? ! ? !

THIRTY-FIVE YEARS, you say! ? ! ? ! ? ! ?

Most excellent news!

I hope that this day is full of fond memories, happy, sad, joyful and tearful - - 'cos that is what marriage is all about, right?

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]HAPPY HAPPY HAPPY ANNIVERSARY![/move]

. . .and not to take anything away from THIRTY-FIVE YEARS of marriage, but, TOMORROW, June 2nd, marks my parents' anniversary:

They will have been married for FIFTY YEARS!
(which is one of the main reasons I may or not make it to festivities on HHW).
On Sunday, there is a humongous, catered event here at the house; one hundred and seventy five invitations were sent out from my folks' address book alone!
But, enough about me. . . .

JANE, KEITH - - any marriage that has lasted as long as yours is truly inspirational!  Keep up the great work together!

A CHORUS LINE:

Zach - Michael Douglas (oops, someone beat me to it)
           the ever reliable Mickey Rooney

Cassie - Elaine Stritch
Sheila - Julie Andrews
Diana - Sarah Jessica Parker
Val - Audrey Hepburn

Mike - Drew Carey
Bobby - B. D. Wong
Paul - Tom Selleck
Greg - Robert Conrad
Richie - Matthew Broderick
Don - Dame Edna out of drag (Barry Humphries)

I've played both Greg and Don in different productions of A CHORUS LINE so those parts remain dear to me even if the parts aren't as busy in the show as Mike, Paul, and Bobby. I've always wished I could have played Bobby.

I am back from the Isle of Long, having spent the entire time from Friday afternoon to this morning being E&T. I just finished reading the Notes and the posts (have to do both) and now I want to wish Jane and Keith the happiest of anniversaries! Look forward to meeting DR Jane during her fall visit to New York. Elmore and the rest of us will treat you well.

I am also looking forward to this late afternoon soiree w/DR Penny O, Jason and Elmore at the fabled Joe Allen's. BK will be there in spirit.

5:30. Be there or be round.

And now, back to work.

SPeaking of A CHORUS LINE, I have never understood why Marvin Hamlisch's score didn't receive greater acclaim. Yes, he won the Tony, of course, but I remember reviews at the time saying the music let down the rest of the production, and I simply don't understand those criticisms. On the basis of the "Hello, Twelve" montage that goes on for fifteen or twenty minutes and includes all of the characters who don't get their own individual songs or monologues in the score (which is why "Surprise, Surprise" is such a dismal letdown in the film; it doesn't address those people in the line), the score should be considered innovative.

MGM is releasing on September 7th some wonderful films on DVD: Judgment at Nuremberg, Blithe Spirit, Brief Encounter, the 1946 version of Great Expectations, In Which We Serve, Madeleine, 1948's Oliver Twist, The Passionate Friends and This Happy Breed.

I have the Criterion releases of GREAT EXPECTATIONS and OLIVER TWIST, and they look so good, I'm not sure they can be bettered.

JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG will not be anamorphic in MGM's usual lazy fashion, but will include some extras (interview with Abby Mann and Max Schell; tribute to Stanley Kramer), and all of these will retail for $14.95 which means you can probably find them discounted somewhere on the net for less than $10. I'm sure I'll get NUREMBERG because the laserdisc is full frame, and DVD will be a more convenient way of watching it without swapping out discs.

I hate to admit it, but I don't really know the characters from A Chorus Line.  I've listened to the recordings (record and both CD issues) for years, but I've only seen the movie once (forgive me) and a live production at a high school that was, shall we say...not the best of all possible productions (almost a Candide reference).

I found that until I actually did A CHORUS LINE, I couldn't remember the names of the characters very well having seen it twice before I got to do it. And reading the names of the characters in the CD booklet isn't much help since some of them are the characters who get cut after the opening number, and others (like Don) have very few solo moments on the CD cast album, even the newly remastered one.

What I'll be watching tonight. (From today's Globe and Mail)

Prom Queen: The Marc Hall Story (CTV, 9 p.m.) is a scintillating TV-movie version of the story of Hall, the Oshawa, Ont., teenager who fought for the right to take his boyfriend to the school prom.

The story is well-known by now. Hall, a lively, cheerful, gay teenager, submitted the name of his boyfriend to the school principal (played by Dave Foley here) for approval, as required. Then he was told that because he was attending a Catholic school, his male partner could not be approved for attendance at the prom. Marc petitioned the school authorities and got nowhere, but he started to get a lot of media attention, and was dubbed "Cinderfella" by one newspaper. Eventually he sued, with the help of a shrewd lawyer, and he got to go to the prom with his boyfriend.

As Marc, young Aaron Ashmore is marvelous, a happy kid until he runs into the stonewall of Catholic authority. (The entire cast is great and Tamara Hope as Marc's best friend is excellent as a shrewd, feisty youngster.) There's a marvellous early scene where he tells his parents that he's gay. His mom and dad (Marie Tifo and Jean Pierre Bergeron) look a tad embarrassed that he's brought up the obvious. Marc says, "The thing is, I'm gay." And his mother gently replies, "Your hair. It's blue. And you have a poster of Celine Dion on your wall. We know."

As the battle for Marc's rights progresses, his dad gets some grief at work. A union rep steps in. Then there is a marvellous Canadian moment during a confrontation with school officials. The CAW guy appears, puts his hand on the dad's shoulder and says, "My name is Mike Shields, and I'm with the Canadian Auto Workers. Listen, you have an obligation to this young man and to the members of this community to do the right thing. This is a community of inclusion. We are not a bunch of rednecks."

Soon, along comes Scott Thompson in a flashy car. Thompson is playing the lawyer who's anxious to fight for Marc in the courts. Things get even livelier from there.

This is an outstanding TV movie, a saucy, smart and entertaining work that celebrates a kind of Canadian triumph that we all want to see. It makes you glad to be Canadian, and that's worth cheering.

Thank you Jason.  Have a nice day at work

Td, yea we have all of those memories.  Today I just feel very fortunate to have had them all with Keith.  Please wish your parents a very happy 50th.   We look forward to celebrating our own special 50th.  Have a good day with your parents tomorrow.

Matt H almost 52 years is really something.  Thank you for the wishes and congratulations.

Ben, thanks and have fun tonight.  Last year Penny arrived in Ashland the evening of our anniversary and this year she will be with you.

Yea Emily, wow!  I think we are just in shock a bit ourselves, not because we are still together-but time really does fly by.

Michael the happy faces hug-we have been doing lots of that today.  They are so cute-thank you.

Dan (the man) our first song was “Somewhere My Love”  I know, an odd choice to have as a song.  Today it would be “As Time Goes By”
Oh, and thank you for the wishes.

George, thank you for the pretty wishes.  How do you do two colors?  It never works when I try it.

Noel-Thanks & LOL.  When Keith & I started dating we were constantly told it would never last.  When I worked & but Keith through school I was constantly told he would leave me as soon as he graduated.  As he got close to getting his masters degree he began counting down the days until he would be leaving me.  I thought he was hysterical but you should have seen some of the looks he got. ;D

Dan (the man) our first song was “Somewhere My Love”  I know, an odd choice to have as a song.  Today it would be “As Time Goes By”
Oh, and thank you for the wishes.

I'm having a brain wedgie...Is "Somewhere My Love" the same song as "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago?

For DR Elmore: Not sure who DR Noel is dining with.  But didn't he say that it was the songwriter who should win the Tony this year?  Wouldn't that make it either Stephen Schwartz or the Avenue Q guys?

Re: DR Danise's opinions on the shows she saw.  It's funny but when I saw Donna Murphy in Wonderful Town I was mesmerized. I thought it was one of the best things I had ever seen.

But when I saw Aida, I could not stop laughing. I mean I loved Sherie Rene Scott. But I thought so much of it was lacking.  And most of the choreography was so bad I actually had to stop myself from laughing out loud.

Jane and Keith:

Happy Anniversary.

Here are the lyrics to the "Anniversary Song" by Al Jolson and Saul Chaplin:

Oh, how we danced on the night we were wed.
We vowed our true love, though a word wasn't said.
The world was in bloom, there were stars in the skies,
Except for the few that were there in your eyes.

Dear as I held you so close in my arms,
Angels were singing a hymn to your charms.
Two hearts gently beating were murmuring low,
"My darling, I love you so!"

The night seemed to fade into blossoming dawn,
The sun shown anew but the dance lingered on.
Could we but relive that sweet moment sublime,
We'd find that our love is unaltered by time.

May you always relive ALL the sweet moments sublime!

Dear Friend BK, sort of.  Glenn Young, who owns Applause, is the man I've been trying to reach about your doing a reading.  I know that Applause Books are being published by Hal Leonard in Milwaukee these days, so there's probably some arrangement with Mr Young and Hal Leonard.  Are you looking for a theatrical books publisher?

I'd think the obvious Kristine would be Audra McDonald.

But the problem with CL is that the characters aren't really associated with their names, they're associated with their songs.  Assuming they have them.  (Paul, for example, doesn't.)

Aargh.  Tough list to put together.

God spelled backwards is dog
Or: How I ended up singing a solo on a Broadway stage
[/b]

My band - a guitarist and a drummer, were chosen by my actors, which was fine with me because I don't know any guitarists or drummers.  It also helped the feeling that we were a company, which, if you've read the author's notes, is what the show's all about.

The song, On the Willows, must be sung by the band, because everyone else in the show has to say a very individual goodbye to Jesus, moving out of the Last Supper.  I asked the two musicians who had more experience singing harmony, and the drummer had.  Although he speaks in a really deep voice, he had no trouble with the F#s the harmony part required.  So the guitarist learned the melody line.  The song is in three parts: the first part is to be sung as a solo, the second part is two-part harmony and then the bridge is in three-part harmony, so I knew I'd be joining for that.

The guitarist has a voice that's made for rock and roll.  It's got a certain twanginess and bad intonation that you hear on the radio all the time.  It wasn't what I'd envisioned for On the Willows, but Godspell is, after all, a rock musical, and nobody else was singing like that.

The show had two stage directors and a choreographer who did more of the work than the two directors combined.  At the rehearsal (Friday, I think it was) when the band first sang, both directors whispered in my ear that they thought we sounded awful.  I said I'd need to find some rehearsal time to work with them.  The time I found was Saturday after the run-through.  So that meant that on Saturday, the directors heard the same thing - we'd not yet had a chance to work on it.  Again, the whispering: Can't you do it?  The guitarist sounds awful.  I said that I could do it, but that would be cheating.  And let's see how they sound after a rehearsal.

The final dress, the band showed a marked improvement in their singing abilities.  Their instrument playing abilities - what they'd been hired for - were beyond reporach, by the way.  We didn't get a note.  Sunday's opening went very well.  People laughed at all the creative things: the Donald Trump bit I'd suggested, The Lord of the Rings (for the servant of two masters parable), our commedia Good Samaritan, etc.  The next day, the director and choreographer said "We know you're the musical director and we know you want the guitarist to do it.  But we're overruling you.  You must sing that song."

And so, the decision taken out of my hands, ten minutes before the show began, I told the guitarist I his solo was being taken away from him.  I'd sing the first section, then the two of them would sing the second section.  And the part for all three would be done by all three.  At last, the audience could focus on the extremely moving on-stage action and not the caterwauling coming from the band.

I try never to miss the ASCAP workshop, which starts at 7.  Then, straight home, because it's the first night with my dear wife since Wednesday.

I think the worst cast to do A Chorus Line with would be the cast of Avenue Q.  Rod would do Paul's monologue too awkwardly.  And Trekkie Monster would have an inappropriate reaction to "Tits!  When am I going to grow tits?"

Can I say "tits" here?  Do I have to use "This and That."  When Howard Shore had his all-girl band, do you think they ever did a titsprobe?

Enough

Good Afternoon!

HAPPY 35TH WEDDING ANNIVERSAY JANE AND KEITH!!!

DR MBarnum - I, too, can't seem to get enough of those Deluxe Mixed Nuts!  -Especially when they're on sale on Target.  -For an extra special treat, place them on a paper plate - or any other plate - and microwave them for a couple of seconds.  Yum!!!  -Or you can also warm them up the traditional way in a small skillet on the stove top.  -Or you could give them the full Martha Stewart treatment and add some herbs (pronounce the "h") such as rosemary and thyme... and a dash or two of cayenne for some kick... with some good oil (olive or whatever you prefer) to help the herbs stick... place on a shallow roasting pan...  and after a few minutes in a warm oven... hmmm..

-Yes, that was quite the ramble, but I'm in a rambling mode and mood right now.

It was nice sleeping in my own bed last night - instead of driving back up to DC.  And even though I had planned on getting up early, I did let myself laze around until around 11:00, but I was still on the road by 1:00.  And what a wonderful afternoon it was for a drive!  Next to no traffic, and it was bright and sunny - and not humid.  And I made very good time back up to Arlington too!  And I beat the big thunderstorm that came through shortly after I pulled into the garage.  *Some pretty high gusts of wind - people were losing chairs and BBQ grill covers from their balconies - it took me a while to figure out exactly had landed in the street.  Ohh...

I'm looking forward to finally meeting DRs SWW and DerBrucer tomorrow night when they come to see SPAWN OF EDEN.  :-)

Well, I still need to get some stuff put away, and I also need to make sure I paid all my bills from last month too... Oops.. So...

Laters...

I have just returned from a glorious and sparkling dinner with DRs Penny O, Elmore and Jason. We went to Joe Allen's (Joe says hello BTW). First of all, DR Jay, I'm sorry to report that between the four of us, we had no camera so there will be no pictures. There will, however, be plenty of witty repartee about the event. I will post, Penny will post, Elmore will post, Jason will post. We will be our own frenzy!

Dirt was dished, reputations were sullied and I won't be able to think of certain DRs again without a smile on my face. Modesty forbids me from naming names. Suffice it to say that we laughed and laughed, (as Bruce said about chat) and then we laughed some more. I had a delicious Seven Grain Salad (very healthy) and a glass of fresh brewed Iced Tea. DR Elmore had a gargantuan piece of meatloaf with fresh spinach and whipped potatoes (whatever did the potatoes do to make Mr. Allen whip them???). DR. Penny had a small dinner salad the size of a large child with a wonderful gorganzola dressing (on the side, of course) and our Dear Jason had le bifteck avec des pommes frites. Tres delicious (I can't remember the French spelling and I don't have the French dictionary handy, so sue me).

We do have to thank Mr. Pacino for picking up the tab. He was very gracious. When we mentioned Bruce, he perked up and said "Any friends of Bruce are friends of mine. Consider it paid for". Well, after modest protestations, we we acquiesed. Then, to our surprise, the lovely and charming Miss Frances Sternhagen offered to pay for our dessert. As Penny was about to leave for a performance of Phantom of the Opera (it's Tuesday at 7 here in New York so the performance began an hour earlier tonight) we declined her kind offer, but we did thank her and told her we would send our best regards to Bruce from her.

The funny thing is, Frances and Al were really there, and may still be for all we know.

I hope this is a good interim report until the others have a chance to chime in. Penny will report after the theatre, Elmore after his mission to 66th Street and West End Avenue (a Magic Show reference) and Jason when he returns to Brooklyn via the E train.

Au revoir mes amis.

Back from an East Coast HHW gathering at Joe Allen. Much fun was had...much merriment and mirth and legs. And, I swear on my collection of cast recordings (and you KNOW I'm not kidding now)--Al Pacino ran in the door as we were coming out. No joke. Much dirt was dished and many secrets revealed. My steak was DELICIOUS, though almost a bit too pink for my taste. Nonetheless, it was loverly and I'm glad I went. DR PennyO got her ticket to PHANTOM OF THE OPERA, so that's where she is right now, and apparently her audition went well, too. I'll let her tell you about all of that.

'Twas lovely to meet new people and reconnect with Ben...wish more of you could have been there.

Well, it was a celebrity filled event, and no paparazzi, so I'm afraid no photos will be posted on this site from Joe Allen's.  My two new favorite celebrities are DRs Jason and Ben, both true gentlemen and sparkling guests.  I think a jolly time was had by all.  What do Joe Allen's, Liza Minelli, and Bruce Kimmel all have in common?  It's a secret we can't divulge here!  Let's discuss the menu:  I had the meatloaf, and even though I don't like cooked spinach, I didn't vomit on the floor, Miss PennyO had a small salad and a sour apple martini, Ben had seven-grain salad which looked very good, and if you've followed today's board you know Jason had sirloin.

At her audition, my other favorite celebrity, Miss PennyO, sang her high E-flat as well as a high B in "Vilia" and seemed pleased with the results. Now she's off to see PHANTOM.

To continue the festivities, I spoke briefly to Frances Sternhagen, whose son Paul is in WHERE'S CHARLEY?, and at Lincoln Center I ran into David Caruso.
Such a night!

Al is always at Joe Allen.  Long ago he found out it was my hangout, and always being a follower, he just started showing up like the joint was his.  Skammen.

I will be going out soon, about which more in tomorrow's notes, but be sure to keep the home fries burning until my returning, for which you'll be yearning.

When is DR Der Brucer going to resume posting? That is what I want to know!!!
He's been quite busy with work, and feels guilty if he's on the computer and not working.  He's got a couple of projects that he's owed friends of his for some time.  He's doing well, though, and I keep him updated on the goings on.

Tonight, he surprised me at work when he came to pick me up.  He brought Bonnie with him.  She was practically prancing, she was so thrilled to be out on her own.  She was nice to Tim, my co-worker tonight, but her heart was into giving me her loving.

Maybe der B will bring the others to pick me up on other nights!  I'll be closing most nights, as far as I can tell.

(Dinner tonight: steaks, baked potatoes, and zucchini drizzled with olive oil, seasoned with pepper and a topping of fresh grated Parmesan, which I'll put in the oven while the steaks are cooking and the 'taters rest.

Yup, it's going to be tape delayed and be broadcast 8:00 p.m. PDT.
This will allow them to edit anything from Elaine Strich, so they can bring the show in on time.

JoseSPiano thank you.  Your suggestions for Deluxe Mixed Nuts sounds good.  Unfortunately, with my allergies to selected nuts, I can’t eat mixed nuts.  Have fun tomorrow night.

As I have promised, here is the last installment of my NYC trip.

After doing all of that walking down and through Central Park,  my hips were positively humming.  Stephanie was going to meet me at five so I didn’t have much time.

I still managed to have a nice hot soak/shower and got a small cat nap of about 20 minutes. Little did I know how badly I was going to need it.

I had phoned the airport van to arrange the time I was to be picked up the next day to go to the airport.  Even though my flight left at 1:45 PM, I was told to be ready to be picked up no later than 9:20 AM.  I had already started my pre-packing by putting everything that could be into my suitcase.

Stephanie phoned me, right on time, and we arranged to meet in lobby at five.  When the time came I had the pleasure of not only meeting her but her Mother as well.  Believe it or not we meet at almost the exact same spot were Elmore and I had met.

Her Mom couldn’t stay so we found her a cab and off she went.

Stephanie and I headed over to the restaurant, Barrymores and I must say I liked the way she was greeted by the waiters there.  Everyone seemed to know her and it seemed so nice and friendly.  Since it was my last night in NYC, I decided to let out all of the stops and ordered a NY Strip steak, mashed potatoes (a big no-no on my diet), carrots were the veggie of the day (but I don’t like them even on a good day and did not eat them)  and a glass of ice tea.

The steak was wonderful, cooked just the way I like it.  Medium rare.  Yum!

We soon discovered that we both had a lot in common.  Widowed mother, some of the same medical problems and a wicked sense of humor.  We were laughing and joking like old friends in no time.

We still had time after our dinner so I offered to show Stephanie my Michael Ball pictures.  We went back to the hotel.  She was shocked when she saw the size of the room.  I showed her the “closet” and the bathroom I had fought for with the tub.  I was told I could have gotten a much better room someplace else and I do tend to believe that.  If there ever is a next time, I will NOT be staying at the Milford Plaza, believe me.

We left for our front row seats at “Boy From Oz”.  Stephanie told me as luck would have it, another friend of hers would be at the show and would be sitting in the seat directly behind us.  Worked for me.

As it turned out I met three other very nice ladies and we all laughed and talked before the show.

So how was the show and Mr. Jackman?  Well, I enjoyed the interaction between him and the audience.  I had never been to a play where one of the actors pulled people from the audience into the play.  He picked on a Marine and had him move down to better seats nearer the stage then had him do a dance.  It as great fun.  Can’t say I was in love with his singing voice, however.  All in all it was a good time but once was enough for me.  Some had been to see the show over a hundred times and as much as I love Michael Crawford and Michael Ball, I can’t see myself going to see them that many times.  Even if I did have the time/money.

It seemed that Stephanie knew some of the people who were in the show.  They gave her little smiles and waves when they were on our side of the stage which was nice to see.

I’m not into hanging out at stage doors but the others wanted pictures so when the play was over, out we went.  I tried taking a picture or two since I as there but I think I only managed to get a wonderful shot of the back of Mr. Jackmans head.  I’m sure a true fan would know it was him instantly.  Oy.

After that, the five of us walked back over to Barrymores for coffee (hot tea in my case) and something good to eat.  I had the Mississippi Mud pie.  It was my last night of vacation and I was going to enjoy every bite of it.  I only ate half before I had to stop. Way to rich for me.  I’m not used to eating such things anymore.

We laughed and chatted until about 1 o’clock AM when we had to part company.  The pity of it was that they thought I was in the city until Sunday and wanted to go out to lunch and or dinner on both Friday and Saturday, go to a museum,  as well as go to a few more plays.  I had to sadly tell them I was leaving on the morrow which was a shame.  I would have enjoyed that very much.  It was why I had come to the city in the first place, hoping to spend time in the company of new friends.

We said our farewells and I went back to my hotel room, quickly went to bed and promptly fell asleep.  I was up by 6:00 AM, finished my packing and went for one last quick walk around Times Square.  I watched part of  the Today Show be filmed.  Called Mom to tell her I might be on TV is she would only turn it on but she didn’t answer the phone (to early for her, I guess).

I ate breakfast at McD’s in Time Square, bought a few T-shirts as gifts for the gang at work and a few pastries to take home with me.

I walked by the Minskoff Theater and put my hand on the window–Jane, you know why I had to do that but the magic didn’t work.  I think it was the timing.  Oh, well.

I tryed to get a sense of Mr. Crawford there but it was like radio static.  To many people had walked the same steps and to much time had gone by for me to home in on anything.  Still it was nice to close my eyes and picture him at the door.

Then it was back to the hotel.  I got a porter and checked out of my room, saying “Farewell” to it and closing the door for the final time.

I was lucky that I was ready when I was.  A van was already downstairs to go to JFK so I quickly checked out.  I tried to look down the streets as we rode through the city to get last glimpses of the theaters I had been at and Times Square.  It was another rainy/ cloudy day.  I couldn’t see any of the skyscrapers or the Empire State Build when we crossed the bridge.  It was like it as all hiding from me.

I arrived at the airport, way, way early for my flight .  It turned out my one bag was overweight so I had to pay an extra $25.00 for it.  They said I had more then enough time to go through both bags and transfer some stuff to the lighter bag but I was so tired, I didn’t care.  I was just burning with tiredness at that point.   I just paid the fee and let it go at that.

I settled in a seat by the terminal and played my mp3s while I did a Circle A Word Puzzle or two or three or four.  I lost count.  At some point, I called Elmore to thank him once again and let him know I was at the airport soon to be heading home.

I would like to say at this point that both Jane and Elmore called me a number of times while I was in the city and I deeply appreciated both their time and caring to see that I was alright.  It was more than I could have hoped for or deserved.

The wait for my flight was finely over and I boarded the plane .  Oddly I felt myself crying when the plane took off but if it was relief, sadness at leaving, or just plain tiredness, I honestly can’t say.  I tried to keep my face towards the window so I wouldn’t bother the kid next to me.  I didn’t want him to see me cry but I’m sure he knew what I was doing.  Then (to my great amazement)  I nodded off for about forty five minutes.  Fell dead asleep without even giving it a thought.   I was so startled when I woke up–I didn’t know where I was for a moment or two.

Soon the plane was touching down in Tampa and my trip to NYC was at an end.

They say that traveling is a great teacher.  I would say I have to agree.  I did learn a lot.  About NYC, about friendship, about myself.  I did it.  I got myself to NYC and back.  Something to be proud of, I think.  Will I ever go to NYC again?  Who knows.  I would have said “no” but perhaps now that I’ve had some time to think about it, I find I might.  Not for the reasons that lead me there the first time.  No, never, ever for them again but someday there might be other, better reasons to go.  And I will know the place next time.  I will do some things better, I think.  I will go to Joe Allens and Barrymores.

And who knows, maybe, if there is a next time, I might even try to ride a subway by myself.

Tomovoz we did have a wonderful day.  The weather is perfect.  We woke up to the wonderful aroma of the flowers our younger son sent us, which arrived last night.

To also answer Jennifer’s question:

We went to a matinee of COMEDY OF ERROR.  The two leads had an incredible amount of energy and were very good.  All in all we had a good time.  The sets and staging were well done. The show was modernized a bit, to the thirties (?) and set in a Vegas type location.  We don’t normally enjoy Shakespeare out of the traditional settings but this was fun and the tough guy accents were a hoot.

Following the show we walked around town a bit, shopped a bit, and then went for an early dinner, or late lunch.  Now we are stuffed.  We had homemade potato chips and a creamy sauce to dip them in.  Our second appetizer was a pastry with a caramelized leek and brie filling.  For dinner we each had the eggplant “sandwich”.  Extremely thin slices of eggplant fried in Panko made up the outside of the “sandwich”.  The inside of the sandwich consisted of caramelized onions and French goats cheese.  The meal was excellent.

DRJane, I knew you'd have a good time!  O excellent day!  The COMEDY OF ERRORS has one of my favorite Shakespeare lines "I to the world am like a drop of water That in the ocean seeks another drop, Who, falling there to find his fellow forth, Unseen, inquisitive, confounds himself.  So I, to find a mother and a brother, In quest of them, unhappy, lose myself."

DRDanise, what a lovely saga!  I think it turned into a pretty decent trip.  I'm thrilled about the friendships that developed at the last minute with your friends at BOY FROM OZ.  You found a lot of positive things about making the trek, and I think anyone who comes to New York alone has to be a brave and resourceful person.  I'd like to give you a little gold star to reward you and to thank you for your kind words about me.  I can't speak for DRJane (well, I could but it's her day today and I'll let her), but meeting you, as well as my new friends from today, have been highlights to my time here.  I couldn't let a friend hang out here without checking in on them, could I?

Maybe a group of Hainsies will ride the first subway trip with you!  Count me in.

Thank you Michael Shayne-WE DID! :) :) :)

Danise, very clever and close enough.  The wedding began at twelve noon.  I’m not sure at what time after that we were pronounced husband and wife.  I was having too much fun to look at my watch.  I enjoyed your story very much.  London is easy, you can spend days walking around by yourself and taking the train to the charming towns outside of the city.

I just love when Keith has Echo, or any dog we have ever had, in the car when he picks me up from someplace.  Our Medford airport is rather small and most often we exit the plane outside.  Last winter it was great fun to get off the plane and hear Echo bark at me from the fence. :D

Elmore, yes it is a good line.

DR Danise, I completely loved reading your stories about NYC!  I especially liked reading about how you took the town and went walking around and taking buses by yourself as a first-timer in the city.  In one of your stories, I must have missed a line or two because I thought you took your stroll through Central Park immediately after you had seen Wicked--I thought, "Damn, that's one gutsy gal!"

Yo! Here I am, once again in my tiny luxurious bedsit-with kitchenette at 73rd and Broadway. Oh, whatta day I've had!

Awoke at about 6 ayem to begin the coffee ritual that would get me the $%#@&^%$ outa here in time for the 9 ayem lineup at Equity. I got a good time: after lunch in the first wave. Scurry, scurry, Little Pen! Back to the apartment to get all fahrpitzed, thence to the studios one can rent cheaply, on 72nd St, just around the corner, to scream my bloody head off with impunity, crank up ye olde voix. Kids, it cranked beautifully, I must say, for such an antique!

Then, catch the train down to the office again, hand in the (years-old) headshot and res, and get in line. Adrenaline! Thank you; NEXT! and Little Pen swoops evah so graciously into the inner sanctum, smilingWAAYYYY too happily at the trio seated on the other side of the table. Plunk the Lucia score in front of the terrified kid at the piano - "just the end of the Mad Scene from Lucia... give me two bars from here..." and away we go. I held the high E-flat at the end with a vengeance, friends, a vengeance.

"Wow, that was a high note..." Ms. Blodgett (one of the conductors of Phantom) sez. "Yup," sez I. "E-flat. Yer show has an E, but I'll spare you."

They were kind enough to laugh. "Thanks," they said. "Dontcha wanna hear some of Vilia?" "yeah, okay, sure." Another high note, this one so floaty it musta had helium. "Thank you; NEXT!"

And then the crash. Oy, I should just go back to the cabin and weed the garden in the rain for the rest of my pathetic life! But halfway home, a jolt of Feel-Good, and by the time I was outa my fancy duds and wearing jeans and tennies and on my way to meet my Lads, well, I was one joyous little woodsprite, i can tell you.

So - Joe Allen's: what can I say? the gents have already described the ambience, the food, the (ssshhhhh!) banter. We toasted old friends and new, and were regaled with hilarious riffs by that wicked raconteur, Monsieur Elmore. It was like Old Times, even if it was the first time - something about having exchanged so much of life for months on the site here means no formality, no breaking-in stuff. We're already friends. It was swell. Made me sorry I had bought a ticket to Phantom tonight. Ah, well, other evenings, other conversations...

Phantom: what can I say??? I walked home whistling the scenery! Yowza! Sixty jillion dollars, and you can see every dime up there on stage! Whatta show! I sure hope i get to play Carlotta - cuz her costumes are outrageous! Good performances, packed house. Go figure, after 16 years...

Thanks, gents, for such a lovely visit. See you soon.

The Cary Grant documentary was fine, but the stories of his life in New York before he went west were curiously glossed over. Still, it went into some detail over his marriages without delving too much. I don't think he ever let many people into his life who KNEW too much about him.

PennyO: Glad you enjoyed PHANTOM. The old show still holds up, even after 16 years.

Perhaps I am a bit slow on the uptake, but was PennyO's audition today for the role of Carlotta in Phantom?

I'm new but I love hearing about people's New York adventures since I still haven't had any yet! (hmmm maybe not the best way to introduce myself but oh well.) That's refering to whomever George is talking to. SORRY! Just give me sometime to get a handle on how this site works and I'll be better! :-)

Welcome to the madhouse, Joey.  We have fun here, and unlike other theater chat boards there are no flamewars, everyone is respectful and it's all quite addictive.  Best way to start each new day is to read BK's Notes (just click the link that says "Today's Column" so you're in the know, and then at the end of each day's notes you can click the link and come directly to this here discussion board.

I'm back and to prove it, I'm here.  Thanks to all for keeping the home fries burning.

I believe it is a new trilogy of fims by George Lucas.

Neve mind (an Emily Litella reference!) - I just looked it up. I'm glad it has nothing to do with throwing burning home fries at each other.

Welcome Joey!!  Tell us a bit about yourself!  We're really very friendly people around these here parts, and we like to get the scoop on newcomers.

And one for Mahler.

Benvenuto, Joey!

Perhaps I am a bit slow on the uptake, but was PennyO's audition today for the role of Carlotta in Phantom?

Yes. Today they had a 6-month Required Equity Replacement Call for PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. She sang for the role of Carlotta. Move over, Judy Kaye...here comes PennyO!

In honor of our newest member, Joey, here's a song for Jed:

Joey, Joey, Joey
Joey, Joey, Joe
You've been too long
In one place
And it's time to go...
Time to go!

Speaking of times to go...it's past my bedtime...and I haven't even showered yet!

Has anyone noticed how dangerously close I am to becoming a god? DANGEROUSLY close, I tell you... I expect party hats and pantaloons...cheese slices and ham chunks. And chocolate chip cookies. :D

Wait a minute - they were auditioning for Carlotta?  Where was I?  I've always wanted to play Carlotta.  Mad Carlotta (oh - a Vertigo reference).

Haha ok umm I'm a college student and I haven't been lucky enought to make it to New York yet. (hopefully in October) I am VERY passionate about theatre in general. I am trying to decide on a major. I am currently thinking about declaring music ed in the fall with a minor in theatre, and a minor in digital media but that could change. I can't decide. I am also Catholic which is a big part of my life. (Don't let that scare you!) I'm not one of those "You're going to hell" people. I am a firm believer in spreading love and understanding and NOT judgement. I also love to sing. I just can't stop myself there are times where I just have to burst into song. My family tries to get me to sing in public more but I only seem to be able to sing and act on stage . (I think its because I can't really see the audience that well and I don't get nervous.) I post on another messageboard some of you might recognize me as son/gunn but this is much more my style. I hate flame wars. Ummm what else oh yeah Laura II inspired me to join, if it wasn't for her I would not have found this lovely site! :-)  I'm not sure if I fulfilled all the scoops though so if you have any other questions feel free to ask!

Welcome, Joey!

Der Brucer and I will be having our own NYC adventure on Friday.  Tomorrow, however, it's to DC we will go.  I've just realized: Der B is going to be seeing Spawn of Eden cold!  I'm familiar with the score from the Paper Mill recording (re-listened to the first act tonight).  So this will be fun, watching him watch the show, while I'm watching the show, and we're both watching Jose.

If we're lucky, we'll be able to get a pic of Jose with members of the chorus who are dressed like felines.  Then we can post it and call it "Jose and the Pussycats!"

Good Evening!

DR Danise - Let me add my Thank You for your sharing of your NYC experience.  And NYC can truly be an "experience", especially your first time there.  You truly are one of those "half-full" people!

-Of course, reading of your recent adventures, as well as of today's HHW-East get-together... I really want to get back to NYC soon.  Real soon!!!

-And, as luck would have it, I may now have a place in SoHo for the summer!!!!  -The Chelsea apartment fell-through - bad for me, but great news for my friend, John.  But, SoHo... hmm.. Could be fun!  I'll keep you posted!

RE: MAMMA MIA! - As others have mentioned, if you go expecting a great night of theatre... you won't get it.  What you will get is a very high-energy show, with lots of lights and loud music - in the good, rock concert sense.  -And some pretty nice bodies - usually without shirts - at least for the men.  *Oh, and I think Dave is still playing drums in the pit for that tour - he's very nice to look at - and just a great guy period.  And being familiar with the ABBA repertoire does help.  Some of the songs are purposely shoe-horned in some places - it's kind of fun guessing what song will come next.  *They just list the songs in the program - not the order.

Well, I better his Post before I'm locked out...

And as for A CHORUS LINE casting... I, too, agree that the movie version set the bar... although, I felt really bad for Gregg Burge having to sing that "Surprise" number.  UGH!

But I won't have a chance to bake between now and Friday!  Damn them, damn them all to...wait, that's someone else's line!
