Title: CRAFT

Well, you've read the notes, the notes had craft, and now it is time for you to post until the crafty cows come home - they're currently having some Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, which is their favorite kind of Kraft.

Good morning, all! I slept well until around 3:30am, when the Bartender Above Me returned home. I dont know if he was moving furniture, having sex or having a party, but there was a lot of noise coming from the celing above me. He's usually pretty quiet, so I'm not going to kick up a storm or rage to the landlord, but at 4:11 when i checked the time, i was not happy.

This morning, I have another meeting at the McGlinnventory to pick up some music. Following that, I'm back here for more writing and a phone call to the Man From Philadelphia. We've gpt to get these liner notes coordinated.

I looked up the new musical, "South Street." I was amazed that the otchestrator gets top billing on the ad! I should have been so lucky!

Just a hypothesis, because i couldn't "slant rhyme" effectively for an entire song; it's just not something I have the ability to do   - With New York City still being the ultimate goal of almost every American theater lyricist, and with the Tony voters and New York City critics as a body caring not a whit (or wit) about true vs. slant rhyming, isn't the battle over and the anti-slant folks seem to have lost?

Seems to me doing REALLY EFFECTIVE slant rhyming, as the Book of Mormon writers do, is an art that requires talent and instinct and a strong narrative and book, and effective music, to make work.  I wouldn't be surprised if we start seeing a proliferation of slant-rhyming dictionaries to rival the real-rhyming dictionaries.  I don't have to like it, none of us have to like it, but the NYC critics and Tony voters and audiences seem to "has spoken" - if the book works, and the music works, and the slant rhyming is effective and doesn't draw you out of what's onstage, at least for now true rhyming doesn't matter to them.

So people are finding items that are worth $100 or more at the tables at the Flea market for like $1 or less - on the one hand, some may argue why shouldn't BCEFA be getting the real value for those items, but it seems the prospect of prospecting for such things is part of what makes the Flea market such an attraction and great success.  So likely more attention and money is made overall by a loss of some money on a stray item here and there.

False rhymes or slant rhymes, as DR FJL says, don't necessarily take me out of the show or song.....but I think sometimes it makes the singer sound dumb.

Disney movie songs.....most of mine are from the classic era......

Summer Magic and many other songs from that movie......

Most of the more recent ones seem to be manufactured rather than written.....I HATE THE LION KING, thank you....and especially MULAN and HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME or whatever it was called.  My not caring started at about the time of JUNGLE BOOK and SWORD IN THE STONE......

Some of the songs from THE LITTLE MERMAID are nice.....but not as choreographed by Debbie Allen.

DR Jane, re: your comments about eating before exercising.

Have you ever tried eating 1-2 hours before?  I didn't mean to say i could just eat and exercise right after. No i usually wait at least an hour.

But i could not exercise in the morning without eating first. Like i said i would not have enough energy to do it.

If i swim i eat 2 hours before. Biking at least 1 hour.

DR Jane when you exercise is it first thing in the morning without any food in your body? Or do you just mean that you don't eat right before but that you've eaten something that day?

Like i said i could not exercise without anything in my stomach. Also it probably depends on how hard you work out. Just to do some minor exercises might not take that much energy.   But also i can't imagine that it could be good for a person to exercise without anything in their body. I did actually try to bike once first thing in the morning on no food. ANd it was impossible. I was sluggish. And couldn't go very fast. It was not good!

I am up.  I got a call at eight-forty from the printer - he asked if he could wait to print our 100th release's packaging until next week - I said that was fine.  And I think I'm going to make life much easier by saying that Nudie's CD will be our 99th release rather than Chitty, because then I'm two releases ahead and Chitty can come in six weeks or so, which will just make things easier rather than having to rush today and tomorrow doing everything for it - editing road map, liner notes and all that stuff.  And since we're announcing the Nudie CD this week it makes sense.

Listening to the master of our 100th release - I've alluded to this before as I've listened to all the source material as it came in - I'll be writing about the journey this album has been on the Kritzerland site, but it sounds so good now - gorgeous music and one of the composer's best scores.
Title: Re: CRAFT
Post by: bk on September 26, 2011, 09:22:38 AM
And isn't it funny that another label, knowing this was coming and would be our 100th release, moved up a release of their own by the same composer from the same era so they could get theirs out before ours.  When I say glutting the market, this is precisely what I'm talking about.  They have, oh, say maybe twenty other releases ready to go any one of which they could have done rather than doing this.  Two labels have been playing this game with each other recently, with each trying to best the other with any number of Jerry Goldsmith reissues and you know what - as much as I love Mr. Goldsmith - enough.

LOL Jennifer I know, there was a time I never imagined going without breakfast.  Exercising slightly fatigued or feeling like you might throw up, which would you prefer?

I have had by 1/4 piece of matzo and I'm off to the gym to use some weights & go 3-4 miles on the treadmill.  I think it is a decent, not great, workout.

A frustrating day because my spectacles needed repairing, after the screw holding one of the arms fell off (naturally the tiny screw completely disappeared). So it was off to the opticians at the shopping mall. Whilst there I had a small but tasty lunch of chicken caesar in artisan bread. Back home found my washing machine was overflowing at the waste output. Is that a job for the washing machine manufacturer or a plumber I wonder?

I liked their stores in NYC. Yes, some of the items were priced higher there than at Tower Records, however... Their Classical section normally carried lots of EMI imports, and their main store always had some great "Top 20" and "New Release" sales in each category. I would always walk the couple extra blocks past Tower up to 72nd Street to check the sale prices at HMV first.

All is good, so far, today: I've ordered a couple of used books on 19th Century Romantic Piano Music and Chamber Music, settled on the title for the Herbert piano and cello music recordings, and bound my scores and librettos for EILEEN, ROBERTA and THE RED MILL. I'm arranging a piano-vocal score today, so I'll work on that for the next xouple of hours.

The only dilemma is what happens on Monday, when I'm supposed to be at the Library of Congress. I have just received word that they "don't yet have a continuing resolution for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1st, so don't buy any expensive tickets until it's definite we'll be open."

So, DRs, the Library of Congress needs some vibes!

This morning I had a Facebook internet chat with a gal who played one of the background dancers in this marvelous nightclub scene from GUMNAAM (1965).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoqWOOtlIbM (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KoqWOOtlIbM)

She and her brother, Terence, were dancers in a ton of 1960s Bollywood movies, those that required more modern forms of dancing.

If I recall, the actor playing the singer is her brother-in-law Harman.

Jose - Since an outside producer is named, isn't it possible this is very prudent for the Pasadena Playhouse?  Maybe there's some enhancement money?

Oh, that's a possibility too. But couldn't their image as a "host" producer end up getting tarnished?

Only if the reviews are of the "What were they thinking?" type as opposed to "this is fun" or the "respectable failure" type - but isn't that a risk a theater takes with any new musical?

The only dilemma is what happens on Monday, when I'm supposed to be at the Library of Congress. I have just received word that they "don't yet have a continuing resolution for the fiscal year that starts Oct. 1st, so don't buy any expensive tickets until it's definite we'll be open."

So, DRs, the Library of Congress needs some vibes!

Oy!

OY! is right. -Is this related to the next possible government shut-down?

I think so!

I guess what I really mean to ask is:

Why premiere a musical about "The Philly Sound" in Pasadena?

Especially for you JRand, here is a dance contest clip from the Bollywood film CHA, CHA, CHA where that gal can be seen. She (Edwina is her name) is shown shortly after the music gets going. She has very long hair and the camera catches them just as she and her dance partner twirl.

Her brother is in there dancing also. Just find the tallest, lankiest man.

From bk -

Quote
Back from the Michelle Nicastro event - some of which was very touching.  Guy Haines was a no-show so I had to sing When You Wish Upon A Star - it went very well - I get really nervous in public these days when singing (except at the Kritzerland shows, where I feel completely at ease and comfy whether speaking or singing), but I got through it with no mishaps and got a very nice hand.  When they announced Guy, I got up and went to the stage and said I'd just gotten a text from him and that he was down on Olympic doing the triathlon - which he thought meant three blocks.  He was lying on the sidewalk and unable to get to Hollywood.

Sounds like it was a beautiful service for a beautiful person.

I love, Love, LOVE (that's three LOVEs) the score to HUNCHBACK...AND especially the German cast recording.  I've only actually seen the movie once.

-I'm just wondering why, after all of their recent major financial issues, that Pasadena Playhouse would risk taking on such a venture. Yes, it's good to support new writers and talent, but someone with absolutely no previous track record in musicals? ???

No risk at all, save to their reputation - they put no money into it - fully funded by the apparently deep-pocketed producer.

Well, the point is that they'd get to Cindy there so she could also sign, but yes, I will have an order form or at least a flyer that tells them how to get to the site.  I shipped about twenty-five of them (can't imagine selling more than that, along with fourteen books (I've never sold over three or four books at any of these shows - this one is different, of course), and all the photographs.  The two photos I have that have Cindy in them I only had twenty-five of each - I could conceivably sell out of those but if it's like the Hollywood show someone will be there who can print up more.

A coworker and a fellow actor came to me last year and said that he was adapting a film into a play.  He asked my opinion about it, but not having read any of his original work I had no idea how he would do with "work."  So, I told him to make sure that he let lots of people read the play, write out there comments, and then go through them and figure out which ones are valid changes or corrections.  And I told him that whatever he did, he should not direct the first production.

Well, he said that he had lots of people read the play (I was not included) and they all loved the play as is.  Also, everyone saidthat he should direct the show himself.  I don't know why he bothered to ask me, if he didn't want my opinion.  The show is opening this week or next, and I haven't decided whether or not to go and see it.

DR Laura funny that your photo should remind me of my scare on the treadmill today.

I began slowly so I could program my weight & also make sure my shoulder was going to be ok.  I don't like to go too fast until the pain eases up.  I was slowing pressing the up button when suddenly the speed went racing up.  I began pressing the down button only to see the numbers go up.  As it was speeding past 6.3 I pressed the emergency stop button.  Fortunately I had been watching the speed and quickly began jogging without losing my step.

I got back on the treadmill and gingerly began moving the up button, except it refused to move and was stuck at 2.5.  I got off and found a different treadmill to use, after reporting the problem, one I have avoided as the control buttons are higher up and difficult for me to reach with my shoulder problems.  I like to change the speed & incline every once in awhile & couldn't really do so today.  I didn't dare jog as in case I found it too difficult to slow down.  I only went 2 3/4 miles today.

The entire time I was on the 2nd treadmill I kept watching for someone to check the 1st treadmill.  On my way out I stopped and spoke to someone else and stressed the danger of what had happened.  Had I not been capable of jogging, many people at the gym are not, I could have been seriously hurt.  As I walked out two people were heading to the treadmill.  It turns out I'm not the first person to report a problem.

Did the four-mile jog, continuing to listen to our new master and we've already made two little adjustments to it that helped - minor on two tracks but now everything sounds great.  And look what we made - those with good eyesight will now know what our very special 100th release is:

My eyes aren't that good, so I can't tell. :P

But really, that's great, BK!  Congratulations!

So, how may people have gotten every single CD...besides me? ::)

That Saturday I will spend with Laurie Mitchell and Kenny Miller, stars of ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE.

We will attend the Hollywood show and stare at the celebrities. Then we will have lunch. Then maybe visit with some celebrities. Then dinner.

Mary Jane Croft will be there, by the way. That will be someone wonderful to see!

When are we seeing each other?

I don't know BK, because you have not answered my e-mail from a couple of weeks back asking when we can get together.

However, we must at least get together for breakfast, lunch, or dinner while I am there (Oct 7th through Oct. 14th).

I think if i were in your position i would eat at whatever time i was able to eat at. And then exercise 1-2 hours after.  Are you walking the 3-4 miles? (which would take less energy).  It just doesn't feel good to me to exercise feeling drained or fatigued.

I had a nice time at the Flea Market.   I enjoyed seeing DR Ben and catching up with him.  Later I met my friend Robin and her mother after they arrived from Florida.   We walked around the Flea Market and watched a lot of the auction and had an early dinner at Carmine's.  It was great!

And which celebs did you see, KevinH?

I didn't even go to the photo booth this year.  There was really no one I was interested in having a photo with.  At the auction, Broadway starts Anthony Rapp and Julia Murney each performed a song for the highest bidder.  And Debra Monk had her own table, where she sold signed scripts and other things.

Does the world really need another remake of THE THING?

Probably. Paranoia never goes out of style and the story gives a new director a chance to "improve" the work and show off what their CGI can do. I liked John Carpenter's version a lot more than the original.

Plumber

What makes this the Holy Grail for you?

What makes it a Holy Grail for me is that it's one of Elmer's most beautiful scores - and it's a score I have loved since the LP came out.  And its theme is one of my top 5 favorite movie themes ever.  When I was a wee sprig of a twig of a tad of a lad of a youth, even before I had the LP, I had an RCA 45rpm version of the theme played by Peter Nero - I still have it.  I used to put it on my RCA 45rpm record player and just let it repeat over and over and over again.

I try to exercise early before I feel the need for food.  Do coffee candies before I exercise count ;)

You know what happened when I ran on the trails.  I walk at a good clip and jog short stretches when possible.  I tend to jog more on the treadmill, though it hurts more than on the trails, while I watch the time & distance.  On the treadmill I'm averaging a 14 minute mile.  On a good day I do it in less time.

When I'm done exercising I drink water for my muscles & to reduce fatigue.  Truth be told, I suffer from chronic fatigue to begin with & really don't feel worse for not eating & if I don't eat I have more energy.  I know it doesn't make sense but it is the way it works for me.

In short, Parade was good. Well cast - Euan Morton is near-pefect as Leo Frank - and well sung. Alas, the production is not so well-served by the director nor their sound designer and board op. -But it was nice seeing the "new" Ford's Theatre. And now...another remake:  NBC to Adapt ‘Valley of the Dolls’ for TV (http://xfinitytv.comcast.net/blogs/2011/tv-news/nbc-to-adapt-valley-of-the-dolls-for-tv/).

Quote
It’s the latest incarnation of the storied tale: Jacqueline Susann’s novel has sold 30 million copies and went on to become the classic guilty pleasure 1967 film “Valley of the Dolls” starring Patty Duke, Sharon Tate and Susan Hayward. Then there are the more forgettable versions of the “Dolls” – a 1981 TV miniseries and a 1994 late-night syndicated soap opera starring Sally Kirkland.

But they're going to try it again, anyway.
