Title: OCTOBERFEST

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were festive and October-like, and now it is time for you to post until the festive cows come home.

TOD: I have been blessed to have interviewed a number of celebrities over the years. Cloris Leachman stands out as the funniest and possibly the filthiest. But I think the three that meant the most to me were Lena Horne, Harold Nicholas of the Nicholas Brothers and Bobby Short.

As for the Topic of the Day...

The one celebrity I've met who still makes me nervous each time I re-meet him: Stephen Sondheim
-And I still remember the one rehearsal of Sweeney Todd at The Kennedy Center I had to play with him sitting five feet from me. "Excited and scared!!!!!!!!!!!" However, my "fears" were eased when I asked him about a particular chord in "The Letter". There was a discrepancy between the manuscript score and the published score. I asked him which one was correct. His answer: "I don't know." :)

The one surprise celebrity - well, celebrities - meeting: Mel Brooks and Carl Reiner at What If?

I've also been very fortunate to play for various celebrities at auditions.

OH!

And playing for and singing along with Vanessa Williams when she came down to the Kennedy Center for Carmen Jones, well, that was quite wonderful.  -I believe I was more nervous around here, than I was around the conductor: Placido Domingo.

Well, yesterday was a day...a day of good things and a day of not so good things.  The not so good thing was that I discovered that the odometer in my car doesn't work!  I filled my gas tank and reset my trip meter (so I can check the gas mileage), but after driving down the road for a while, I noticed that the trip meter hadn't moved.  I was on the freeway by this time and I noticed that my odometer wasn't changing, either!  Crapballs (a TPunk reference!).  I don't know if that can be fixed or how much it would cost. :P

A good thing that happened was I picked up my new contact lenses at lunch.  I'm also getting new lenses for my eye glasses, but since I no longer have an older, spare pair, I only have the contacts.  It should take a week to 10 days to get my glasses back with the new lenses...that'll be interesting at night or in the mornings, when I like to watch TV just before going to bed. :-\

The very, Very, VERY (that's three verys) good thing was getting to see Lorna Luft's, "Songs My Mother Taught Me."  WOW!  She can sing and belt it out with the best of 'em.  She does sound older than when she was in "Jerry Herman's Broadway at the Hollywood Bowl," but that was almost 20 years ago.  Anyway, the show was about an hour and 45 minutes long and she was fabulous.  It was real, live singing...and NO AUTOTUNE!  And only one "keyboard."  And a six-piece brass section.  And all live musicians!  She only left the stage once, about an hour in, to change her outfit.  She walked off stage, the band played for just a couple of minutes and then all of a sudden, she came back on in a new outfit.  The house was not completely sold out, but still fairly full.  But they all loved the show.  She got the best applause after "Time Heals Everything" (who knew?) and "The Man That Got Away" (not a surprise).  She also got a very well deserved standing ovation at the end of the show.

Highly recommended by the likes of me! ;D

Instead of actually ushering, I helped to sell her CD before and after the show and I bought one myself.  Shortly after I started selling the "merch" before the show, I bought one and asked if it could be sent backstage for her autograph.  I didn't know if she was going to come out to the lobby after the show, so I asked if the CD could be sent backstage...and she did sign it!  It turns out that she did come out afterward, so it would've been signed anyway.  We sold 25 CDs (at $20 each) and but not as many as they would've expected.

Anyway, here it is!

Michael York
Geneviève Bujold
Angela Lansbury
Christopher Reeve

John Hillerman

*The film was called Rainbow. Although it was never released in Canada (except in a French dubbed version) or the US

Rainbow does have one distinguish credit to its name.

The first live-action theatrical motion picture originated on digital high definition video for distribution and exhibition in 35mm film.

George Lucas was the next person to use it for Star Wars Episode 1

It's lightly raining on Long Island so I can't be out on the patio with my coffee and oatmeal. I'm in the basement now after I read the papers.

I'm due back in the city tomorrow afternoon.

Hello, all DR's... FOLLIES was GREAT!!! Wow, every detail... the Bursting into Tears moment for me: the great Metropolitan Opera mezzo soprano Rosalind Elias unleashing her still-lustrous torrent of vocal splendor from an 80+-year-old throat. She did bring down the house. All those great old-timers, not the least of which was a fragile and haunting Bernadette Peters - oh, m'gawsh. A 40-year-old show with lotsa geezers - tore up the joint.

And the COSTUMES!! and sets... lighting effects... huge cast, of course. Showgirls in Vegas headdresses on 5-inch heels... a truly great evening. And all night long, the music ran through my head, until I finally had to turn to the Shopping Channel to get some sleep.

New subject - Jose - YES, let's get together. Elmo - late lunch? Early dinner tomorrow?? I'm yours.

TOD - Working at NY City Opera all those long years ago, I was totally blown away farirly constantly, working opposite
Beverly Sills (La Loca, her last performances as a singer!)
Sam Ramey (Carmen, Count Ory, Marriage of Figaro, lots of stuff)
VICTORIA DE LOS ANGELES!! (Carmen - her last performance as a singer of opera)
Enrico di Giuseppe (Rigoletto, some other random operas)
So many great singers..
George Balanchine - choreographer for Dido and Aeneas
Peter Martins, who assisted Balanchine on that show
Nuryev, who danced in the companion piece to Dido on the double bill...

Joel Grey - Silverlake, directed by Hal Prince
George Hearn!! on A Doll's Life
Peter Gallagher - A Doll's Life
Wallace Shawn, on The Music Teacher at the Public Theatre
Joe Papp, may he rest in peace...

Laurie Anderson, Patti LuPone, Bill Irwin, Phillip Glass, and other amazing and quirky avant garde artists on a show we all did at the Public
HAL PRINCE - Silverlake and A Doll's Life
Comden and Green! same show!! Holy moley!

Placido Domingo, lots of times, always took my breath away
Luciano Pavarotti - backstage at the Met - unbelievable charisma

the royal family of Holland, at the apartment of Princess Christina, when I sang at the private birthday party for her mother, Queen Juliana -

Alexander Calder - I sang at a small party in his honor in Scarsdale, 3 days before he went into the hospital for an annual checkup, and died there...

GianCarlo Menotti - who directed a Donizetti opera I was in; and, of course, Samuel Barber was there a lot...

Jeez, what memories this particular TOD brings back...

Good morning, all! I've been awake since 7:45 dealing with emails; I had two long ones to write. Last night was another Drama Book Shop dream: what is this all about? I'm wondering if the dead owner who hired me in 1979 is haunting me!

So, this morning, I need to make a trip to Toyland to use the scanner and check on the place before I head to DC. As for the remainder of the day, it's prep work on ROBERTA by Mr Jerome Kern.

BK, I love you much, but you can still let Mr Rothman know that his crappy behavior over HHW and his blog was disruptive and alienating, and that some of your DRs will not forgive his ugliness at the time.

Dearest darlingest PennyO, why don't we say 5:00pm, Arties, 82nd and Broadway?

George, I am glad that you enjoyed Lorna's performance.  I saw her nightclub debut back in 1972(?) in San Francisco at the Top of the Mark, or the Bottom of the Phillip, or someplace like that.  Little brother, Joey Luft was sitting at a table near us, but Liza was absent.  At the time, she never mentioned her mother by name.  I think the only reference was for her encore she did MAMA A RAINBOW (from MINNIE'S BOYS).  As she was holding the last note and the spotlight was beginning to fade; the piano started to play OVER THE RAINBOW..  This was only a couple of years after Judy had died, and it was San Francisco; so the audience went crazy.

Highly recommended by the likes of me! ;D

I worked with her on the GIRL CRAZY recording and she was not the brightest bulb in the lamp. Friendly, but dim. I think that others were unhappy that we had to lower Merman's keys for her as well. I won't mention who cast her; I'll only say I didn't.

Today is barbecue and movie with my guy.   He's so sweet.  Really got lucky.

I think the movie i'm taking over will be  Fifth Element.

I also take at least 2 cd's every week, getting him used to music being on, especially when he's alone at home.

He made the mistake of saying he needed something to do when the house is quite and alone, the only word out of my mouth was "music".

It's what keeps me sane.  ;)

Oh yea, almost forgot,  i had my second accident at the same corner going home from work on Thursday.  Had to have the car towed to the repair shop, could not drive it home.  The other driver took off my front end when he turned in front of me.  I was stopped at the corner, so i'm ok, just the car parts went flying into the street.  Everything is plastic these days and just pulls off.

I think something is trying to tell me it's time to slow down my life.

So i'm taking this as a positive thing.  8)

Good morning!

I'm hoping a computer-savvy DR can help me with my laptop (I'm writing this on my netbook).  The cursor (arrow) will not move.  At first it disappeared completely.  I turned the computer off and on a couple of times.  I hit F8 (based on what I read some where).  I don't know what else to do.  Any suggestions?

I don't now what kind of computer you have, but if you have a Toshiba, there is a little button under the spacebar that turns the cursor on and off.  Maybe you hit it by mistake.

I was a little tired late this morning  and took a nap and I woke from a very strange dream.

It was a "Little House On the Prairie" type setting. The main character was twentyish bitter Librarian. The dream was populate with people I've never seen before except my dream had a "Very Special Guest Star" Buffy St. Marie. She played a character who comes to town as the (unnamed) state first Native American politician. She meets the Liberian and it turns out that she is White Buffalo Calf Woman.*

White Buffalo Calf Woma takes the Librarian on a spiritual journey and she is able to find peace and love within herself. She wakes up and is alone in the library thinking it might be a dream. The woman in her Politician guise comes to say goodbye  to the Liberian and she has a cathartic moment and cries. (Emmy type crying)

Librarian  alone goes back to her counter and knocks over some books. One book falls to floor and it is a book about White Buffalo Calf Woman with a picture very special guest star Buffy St Marie on the cover. Something startles her and she wakes up in modern times in a library picking up the same book off the floor.

Did she dream it or did she embark on a spiritual journey. (Roll end credits)

* For those that may not know who White Buffalo Calf Woman is; she is a sacred woman of supernatural origin, is treated as a prophet or a messiah and is central to the Lakota religion. (So I guess the dream had to take place in one of the Dakotas or Minnesota

TOD:

I have luckily managed to meet quite a number of celebrities over the last 15 years.

Laurie Mitchell (ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, QUEEN OF OUTER SPACE, RUNAWAY GIRL) is likely one of my top favorites. I had no idea that when I telephoned her several years back that we would become such dear chums. She is funny and delightful and so much fun to gossip with! I adore her and consider her one of my greatest friends. Can't wait to see her in another week!

Kenny Miller (ATTACK OF THE PUPPET PEOPLE, I WAS A TEENAGE WEREWOLF, SENIOR PROM). Another truly wonderful person who is very dear to me...we will even be roomies next weekend in Burbank as he will be staying with my at the Marriott.

Scotty Morrow (THE COSMIC MAN, PEYTON PLACE) has also become a very good buddy.

Other favorite celeb meetings were Tom Wopat, Edith Fellows, Kathleen Hughes, Rex Reason, Rhodes Reason, Peter Lupus, of gosh there have been so many that I was very excited about meeting, and truly enjoyed getting to know.

And of course, as mentioned by Vixmom, lots of fantastic HHW celebs, also! All of whom are very important and dear to me!

Just finished watching the 1961 Bollywood movie SON OF INDIA.

I had always read that this film was terrible, the reviews certainly were not kind, but I rather enjoyed it, despite the fact that the DVD copy I was watching was missing a lot of footage...scenes would suddenly end or start mid-scene. It was beautifully filmed in color and cinemascope, which is quite unusual for an Indian film of that era, especially one with no "big" stars in it.

The kid in the film, played by Sajid Khan, did grow up to be a pretty big star when he was cast in the US tv series MAYA with Jay North. Quite a good little actor.

Tomorrow I have a visit from someone from Comcast cable. I bought a new DVD/VHS recorder and have had no luck in figuring out how to hook it up to my DVR box so that I can record things onto DVD.

I hooked it up as my old DVD/VHS machine was hooked up and as the instruction booklet suggested, but nada.

There are 50 million cables and it all drives me crazy, so I finally called Comcast. The told me that different machines might need to be hooked up differently. Hopefully the technician will be able to figure it out. I also hope the technician is the same cable guy that I am friendly with, because that would be nice. He works on Sundays.

I covered theater and a lot of the arts in college and for about a decade or so afterward. I Interviewed Cloris Leachman when she was doing her Grandma Moses show. I met Lena Horne on tour with her one-woman show. Harold Nicholas played the role of the grandfather in "The Tap Dance Kid" national tour with Dule Hill of "The West Wing" as the boy. And Bobby Short did a couple of shows in Albany when I was living up in Catskill.

A few other faves to interview over the years were Lily Tomlin, Rosemary Clooney, Charles Strouse, Lillian Gish and Pat Carroll, plus a string of writers such as Terry McMillan, Michael Connelly, and James W. Hall (and a ton of mystery writers like him that live in Florida).

Paul Newman didn't make your list? or Stephen Schwartz?

Oh... Well...

Paul Newman merely visited us once or twice in the green room at Westport, mainly to drop off more cookies and salad dressing. ;) -However, his wife was there a bit more.

-And I guess I should have included Eartha Kitt then too.

As for Mr. Schwartz, well... I have worked with his son, Scott... ('nuff said). And the one time I had the opportunity to spend some quality time with "pére" Schwartz, I was practically deathly sick, so I wasn't able to hang out with him.

I did not know you had done such things, DR John! Where these food involved interviews?

DR John G even called me in 1985 and I had to have the interview/article suppressed!

I did apologize for that, I hope, DR John G!

My friend Ian Kahn is on a LAW & ORDER  rerun at the moment. He was a Drama Book Shop employee the summer he graduated from high shool.
That's how we got to meet. Nothing to apologize for.

T.O.D.

I have been very fortunate in meeting a great many famous people in my lifetime....

Bruce Kimmel, Ray Bolger, Zsa Zsa Gabor, Ed McMahon, Mark Linn-Baker, Loni Anderson, Peter Nero, Sandy Duncan, Cathy Rigby, Brent Barrett, Buzz Aldrin, Eileen Brennan, Susan Sarandon, Linda Evans and a lot of others who I am too tired to remember on a Saturday afternoon.

However, my favorites were Colleen Dewhurst and Shirley Jones; probably because I got kissed my both of them.

Back from day one of the Ray Courts show.  The first and only downside to our room is that Clint Walker had a very long line for two or three hours, and it completely blocked our tables (Druxy, Bridget, and I) from anyone entering the room.  Once his line cleared (he talks to everyone and is very slow in signing and people had multiple items) then we actually got some folks.  Bridget did very well.  I sold some books and a couple of Blu and Rays and a surprising number of photographs.  I do think I would have done even more had I been closer to Cindy.  Their area was hugely crowded for the first three hours - so much so that I probably would have had claustrophobia.  I said hey to Cindy, waved at Penny, said hi to Henry Winkler, and actually talked to Eddie Mekka for quite a while.  Also saw my old pal Leslie Eastabrook - she was in my musical Start At The Top.  Seka, the former porn star, said hi to me.  That was exciting.  Diane Baker smiled, Millie Perkins waved, James Darren came by and shook hands, Barry Bostwick nodded, and Paul Carafotes, who was across the way, and I had some funny looks and exchanges and discussed our Joe Brooks connection (he was in Joe's Headin' To Broadway movie with Rex Smith, and Joe was an investor in Nudie Musical).  I must now go eat.  Most of the celebs are doing the limo to the movie theater thing tonight, including Cindy and Penny, but that's just not for me.  I'll have a nice dinner, maybe do the treadmill if I can get up the energy, and then just relax.

I met King and Imogen after a dinner theater production. She was all taken with the vocal score for "On the Twentieth Century" that I had brought with me for her to autograph. She had never seen the photos from the production that were in the book (which featured Judy Kaye and not Ms. Kahn). While she was looking, her full-size poodles were running through the dining area licking things that the evening crowd would be eating from. I found it all hilarious and daffy.

DR John G - That "Pink Cake" looks suspiciously like the cherry/strawberry Duncan Hines cake. ;)

Although, I think the main flavoring - and coloring - for Pink Cake is a jar of maraschino cherries with their juice/syrup.

I think something is trying to tell me it's time to slow down my life.

I was a little tired late this morning  and took a nap and I woke from a very strange dream.

It was a "Little House On the Prairie" type setting. The main character was twentyish bitter Liberian. The dream was populate with people I've never seen before except my dream had a "Very Special Guest Star" Buffy St. Marie. She played a character who comes to town as the (unnamed) state first Native American politician. She meets the Liberian and it turns out that she is White Buffalo Calf Woman.*

White Buffalo Calf Woma takes the Liberian on a spiritual journey and she is able to find peace and love within herself. She wakes up and is alone in the library thinking it might be a dream. The woman in her Politician guise comes to say goodbye  to the Liberian and she has a cathartic moment and cries. (Emmy type crying)

Liberian alone goes back to her counter and knocks over some books.

1. Delete this immediately and write the screen play sounds like a Hallmark very special event  special

and 2
(being a lousy typist as we all know, I need to ask this)

Is the embittered person an emigrant from Liberia or a person who works in a library (Librarian)

librarian :-)

I must have mistyped it originalyl and it self corrected to Liberian. Thanks
