Well, you've read the notes, the notes rang twice, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently mooing twice.

TOD: I remember my mother's dressing (never called a vinaigrette, though that's what it was) like Proust remembers his madeleines. She makes it with salad oil and white vinegar, a touch of sugar and a touch of salt. Very simple, yet she always got the acid right. Too much and you pucker like mad. Maybe it was the sugar that tamed it.

I make plenty of dressings these days, usually with olive oil and lime juice, since vinegar does not go with wine. I'll add mustard, dill, herbs from the garden, whatever flavor might go with the rest of the meal or that I feel like.

When I eat out, blue cheese is likely to be the one dressing without sugar or without a lot of it, so I'll go with it. You never know what you're going to get when you order it, either. I've in in places where the blue cheese dressing is a vinaigrette, others where it's more mayonnaise than anything.

Good morning, all! I slept well until my final dream, which was turning into a nightmare as I woke: I was wrking on several Somewhere in all of this, i had had a phone call from one of the NYC Gay Men's Chorus members asking to borrow all of my Cole Porter music and I had told him to go to the library and photocopy the songs he wanted. Then I was at Carnegie Hall for a Men's Chorus concert and I went across Seventh Avenue to purchase a cola and running into our EILEEN producer who was going to the concert.  Judy, our producer and I were talking about final overdubs of something, and we were flying to Seattle to do this; DR JMK was our liaison. I remember wondering, as we drove through a very rundown Seattle looking more like Troy NY, if I would see any of our Northwest Hainsies. Then they dropped me off at my actual New York apartment building, and I noticed that I'd forgotten to lock the door. I was walking up this long narrow staircase thinking I could hear people moving around my apartment, so I slowly inched my way back downstairs and called 911, only I didn't know the address. I could see figures in white clothing and masks moving around in my apartment and I woke up.

At 11 I have an eye exam. It's long overdue. I may walk down to the Juilliard Book Store and browse. After that I have to finetune these liner notes for Mr Victor Herbert.

I think "Away from You" is the best song in REX and one of the best things Rodgers wrote late in his career.  Sheldon Harnick told me that Rodgers had a hard time at that stage in life to deal with a piano.

As for the Topic of the Day...

Italian is still my go-to salad dressing. I grew up on Good Seasons Italian Dressing. In fact, my brothers and I would usually compete to see who could get to mix it up in the cruet that had the "fill lines" on it.

I like Bleu Cheese Dressing - especially with extra bleu cheese crumbled on top. I'm not sure when Roquefort came to be passé, but I still see it every now and then. Of course, Roguefort is a "bleu cheese", so... Could just be a matter of semantics. But then there's Green Goddess made with Gorgonzola.

Anyhoo...

With all the "new" salad greens available today, it's been quite an educational experience finding - tasting - which types of salad dressings do and don't go with certain salad fixings. It's most definitely no longer "One Bottle For Everything".

DR JANE congrats on the new W/D.....I say replace!

Thanks & I am trying to convince Keith not to cancel the new machines, especially since he was the one who insisted I not have the repair guy out.

Also I am just now commenting on the "new" Doris Day CD.  Something is not quite right - sound wise, although Doris sounds okay.  As has been revealed, most of the tracks were recorded for her Doris Day and Friends television show on CBN back in the early 1980's.

I would more highly recommend (if you don't have it) - Doris Day the Singles Collection.  It's still available and a lot more enjoyable.

http://www.amazon.com/Singles-Collection-1959-1966-Doris-Day/dp/B00005YJ8S/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1318312457&sr=8-1

I appreciate the comments. I suspected there wasn't much new on there.  For now I hear plenty of DD on my satellite radio, but if I ever cancel it I know which CD to buy.

I slept a half-hour past my normal rising time this morning.  When I turned off the alarm earlier, it was because I wasn't sure I'd be coming in today.  I felt out of sorts and sorta achy.

At 10 until 7 a.m., I awoke and demanded that I get ready and get my butt in to work.  Now here I sit...partially regretting my earlier bossiness.

I simply do not know which way the wind will blow on how I feel.  I may be in flux.  Oh, yes, I may be in flux.  This could be weather/allergen related or this could be some-bug-thingie related.

I'm not sneezing or blowing my nose, so that's something.

Bonjour de Paris!  Richard and I had a smooth flight, with very little sleep, a slow bus ride to Gare Montparnasse, and an efficient taxi ride to Hotel de Lille.  Our room wasn't ready when we arrived, so we checked our luggage and took a nice walk around our environs and the outside of the Louvre for an hour or so.  Came back and took a power nap before walking to the Eiffel Tower for our 3:30 reservation (great advice from Rick Steves to buy tickets in advance instead of standing in that long line!).  We were there for a couple of hours, including a late lunch/early dinner.  We taxied back and are in early for the night.

Had a pretty interesting call from a very well-known songwriter - asking if I'd be interested in issuing a cast album that was recorded but not released.  I said of course, of course, and it's being sent to me via Fed Ex.  I'm sure I'll like it so it would be a matter of the deal we might strike - I know the songwriter has talked to others, so I'll simply ask him what they've offered and then beat it.

I'm back from a really lousy excursion: I had to run to Staples to photocopy some receipts since the scanner and photocopier at Toyland are not working. Four photocopiers there, only one costs $0.64 per copy , one was dead, and the other two making copies at $0.11 per copy were in the hands of two old ladies who had no idea of how ro uase a photocopier. After an interminable wait, I got my one copy made and headed to the post office - the one at 83rd Street is the lousiest in Manhattan. I swear! - where the line was out the door and there is only one atomated psotage machine. With another line amd the ,am in front of me had a shopping bag full of parcels. The post office at 68th Street, which seems run by san people. has three automated machines and why the fools at 83rd Street have only one is anybody's guess. I figured fuckit, I'll post it tomorrow.

I am very crabby at the moment. i don't mind waiting, but i have no tolerance for fools at the controls.

I believe I'm up to The Fertility Dance and it looks like it's struck from the same master, so they must have had a roadshow print in the archives all this time, despite their long protestations to the contrary.

It sounds like your drream was turning into EYES WIDE SHUT.  Lucky you woke up beforeTom Crusie arrived at your apartment.

OMG, THE CAPEMAN finally sees the light of day.  :)

"Christmas At Hampton Court" is the only song I can recall from the REX score.

I was thinking about too.

But there is the "ravishing" and I don't use that term often is the song "Away From You" I have one recording of it and its by Sarah Brightman on her "Songs That Got Away" Beautifully sung and orchestrated.

That's one more song from the score than I know.

I think "Away from You" is the best song in REX and one of the best things Rodgers wrote late in his career.  Sheldon Harnick told me that Rodgers had a hard time at that stage in life to deal with a piano.

I haven't heard the Broadway cast recording of this show in a long time, but I really like Sarah Brightman's recording of this song on her recording, "The Songs That Got Away (http://www.amazon.com/Songs-that-Got-Away/dp/B000005S0R/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1318354687&sr=8-3)."

Sounds like a lovely day.  It was too windy when we were in Paris to go up the Eiffel Tower.

Be sure to sample the champagne while you are there.  I found it very tasty & well priced.

Either way, I"m jealous. They are in Europe and I'm not.

DR Ben, when you posted this we were, indeed, awake and having a grand time, but we're both about to crash and sleep off the jet lag.

When our captain came on last night and announced that we were experiencing a little turbulence as we flew over the New York area, I figured it was created by all our friends there waving at the same time...

:)

Keith's aunt & cousin just returned from NY and said the weather there was better than in L.A.  I was invited to join them & regretfully had to decline.

Here is a picture of my new friend Dama who I met last night in West Hollywood. He is from Turkey and has been living in Los Angeles for 3 years, but he doesn't like it.

Dama is a fitness model/waiter/personal trainer. He modeled for several fitness magazines and was kind enough to send me one of his photos...I hope it isn't too risque for this family site.

We found a common bond in Turkish pop music and I really liked him for his brain.

Oh my my my!

I had to review FROM PRADA TO NADA.  Sad to say, I was largely unimpressed.

The songs for the STAR WARS HOLIDAY SPECIAL were by none other than Maury Yeston.

I also just reviewed a Rudy Maxa travel title where he visited HAMPTON COURT.

I'm feeling all synchronicitied out, thanks very much.

Where did you get the information that it was Maury Yeston?

It's printed on the dreadful album. I noticed that before I threw it out.

There was an album????

I am back from the 25th Anniversary production of The Phantom of the Opera.

I only saw it once before 24 years ago with the second cast leads.

I remember not liking it all that much.

BUT 24 years of been very kind and I absolutely loved. The staging is very close to the original but utilizing the space of Albert Hall complemented with projections.

The three leads were excellent.

To see it projected on a large screen in a digital format was spectacular.

I recommend it and suggest when it comes out of Bu Ray, and if you have a Blu Ray player and HD TV, that you should get it.

So...

A couple of hours ago, I buckled down my winsocki, and started some score prep and study for/of The Boys from Syracuse. I had my piano/vocal score, a PDF of some of the selections from the 1938 version, and three different recordings cued up on iTunes. Of course, the one recording I "need" - the London cast - is the one I don't have, and all the listing for new and used copies on Amazon have conflicting information. Anyhoo...

I went song by song, listening to each version one after the other, making some notes on paper and in my scores. By the time I got to the end of Act 1, I had to stop, put my shoes on, step outside and walk a few blocks to a pizza place to get some dinner... And that didn't occur until a little after 10:00pm.

I'll tackle Act 2 tomorrow.

My "waffle taco" from Waffle & Wolf was quite tasty, and my latté from Blue Bottle had to be one of the best coffee drinks I've ever had. Oh, and the cookies were killer too: Dark Chocolate Chocolate Chip, and a Snickerdoodle made with Saffron.

Back from seeing the lagoon that was used in ATTACK OF THE GIANT LEECHES and many, many other films....walked all around it with Scott and Mark. Then they took me up to see the Hollywood sign. We got as close as we could without getting arrested. They found a secret trail to it, but we did not go all the way up...it is a looooong trail.

That paragraph is rife - rife, I tell you! - with innuendo. Alas, knowing DR MBarnum, there probably wasn't any innuendo intended. ::)

The other thing I noticed about Phantom of the Opera was that the role of the Phatom is rather small.

I also noticed this for the first time that prior to the singing of the title song the Phantom is refered to as the "Opera Ghost" and even signs his name that way on his letters. The first time he is refered to as the Phantom  is in the title song.

Afterwards he is known as the Opera Ghost or The Phantom.

Yep, it's quite a small role. -It's even smaller in the actual show since there are two doubles that cover some of the physical crosses and transitions. I believe The Phantom's total "active time" is only comprised of his songs and duets.* 25 minutes or so.

And, yes... O. G.

*When Colm Wilkinson was playing "Erik" in Toronto, there were times when he would not sing a lick of the show live. They had pre-recorded and click-tracked his vocal, and because of the mask, no one could ever really see his mouth move. Or not move.

We can talk about it later, would be fun to run into you, but I understand how crazy it can be when you're only there for a couple days.

I'm going to arrive Thursday afternoon and will be at the Drake.  I'm going to a meeting. We'll have a reception of some sort on Thursday night so I'll be busy.  Friday I'm taking the Chicago Architecture Foundation highlights tour. That will take all morning.  Other than that I'll be in and out of the meeting.   It's on persuasion and I'm pretty good at that, so ....   I leave Sunday morning.

Did you mean Friday for the architecture tour? -I'm going to try to snag a rush ticket to the Chicago Symphony's concert on Friday afternoon.

My bus will be arriving back at the foundation about the same time the concert is starting, lol.  It's next door to symphony hall, so we'll be passing like ships in the night....

Back from a very nice dinner with pal Barbara Deutsch and seeing a staged benefit reading of a Terrence McNally play called Some Men - quite enjoyed the play - I really like his writing and he's very funny at times.  Cast was very good, but nowhere was a list of who they were, which was impossibly annoying.  Kevin Spirtas was in it and very good, and I knew David Pevsner and Maxwell Caulfield - wife Juliet Mills read the stage directions.

Picture trimming done. I am really very sorry about that guys. I guess it was a bit too revealing.

Another moment I enjoyed was Masquerade. It was stage with a huge chorus, bigger than the original staging. The two huge staircases and one upstage and then all the available space on stage.

But did they still use the mannequins?

???

No!  I was watching for that...live bodies, all! :D

does anyone know why Michael Crawford didn't sing?

It seemed to me that when the 4 previous  Phantoms were singing there was a point when  I expexcted him to come out and start singing and instead the current Phantom came out and sang ---- and then there was a closeupf Sir Andrew who has a look on his face like ..."what the ..."

I don't know, but I assumed that it was because he's still in Andrew Lloyd Webber's new production of The Wizard of Oz (http://www.uktickets.co.uk/event/wizard-of-oz/).

And...

In other news...

Due to a sort of "perfect storm" of circumstances, I will be heading to Chicago next week for a few days. A company I've worked for before needed a pianist to play for some auditions. A friend of mine is playing a recital. Another friend happens to be in Follies at Chicago Shakes. And since United seems to be running some sort of crazy sale right now on flights between La Guardia and O'Hare - roundtrips as low as $98! - well...

Oh, and Monkey was invited back to the Art Institute of Chicago too. :)

Jose, Congrats to you and to Monkey!
