Title: CREDULITY DEFIED
Post by: bk on October 19, 2011, 12:32:27 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had credulity and said credulity was defied, and now it is time to post until the credulous cows come home.

And since I got here early...

And since they kept making announcements saying that if any Chicago-bound passengers wanted to take an earlier flight...

Well...

I am. :)

At first I was just going to stick with my original 7:30am flight, but then they kept making the announcement over the PA...

And when I checked in at the gate, the gate agent said they were waiving the change fees due to weather...

Whew!

I had a long, weird dream about the recording of ROBERTA that will happen next year: I seemed to be living in a commune in an office building next to the Sorg Opera House in Middletown, OH, with the Man from Philadelphia, our paralegal Geri, several actors I'm thinking about for the seven roles of the California Collegians, and several tech kids from the New York State Theatre Institute. I remember sending one of the tech kids, whose grlfriend had brought tons of fresh vegetables and was making soup, off to Sorg Park to bring an investor back to a meeting and a backyard picnic. Therewas a shooting by a crazed grandmother, who shot someone - her son, I think - over custody of her grandson. It was all very hippie like.

Today, I will leave here around 9:15 for Encores! I have to be home by 5:00, so I'll leave there around 4:30. I need to finish the prep work on THE RED MILL, so next week I can work on ROBERTA.

DR John G, I want to hear THE CRADLE WILL ROCK with Marc Blitzstein's orchestration, but I must admit I'm not agreat fan of the score. I think Marc's greatest productons are JUNO and THE THREEPENNY OPERA, which - though antiquated by now after 67 years - is still the best singing translation of the piece. And the funniest. Selfishly speaking, I want Encores! to do JUBILEE, because I think they might assemble a really good cast and I know that Rob Berman will do a great job with the score. I'd also like to see them do, for the 2013 centennial of Moross' birth, THE GOLDEN APPLE.

BK,

I certainly can't disagree with you on either SHOWGIRLS or BURLESQUE.

On the other hand, I would be willing to label them "guilty pleasures".

Also, I thought that RETURN OF THE JEDI was 2nd rate when I first saw it in the theater.

 :o

Something must be wrong.

We're starting to agree on some films.

The Open Space Cafe Theatre will be presenting six performances of my one-person play, JOLSON with Richard Gang playing Al Jolson.

Dates are: November 10, 11, 12, 18, 19 and 20.

Mittwoch afternoon greetings from Miltenberg, where we just docked.  We're leaving in about 15 minutes for a walk through town, but I thought I'd pop in while the internet is working.  It's very sporadic on the boat, which is why I've been so E & T.  Yesterday was a full day, touring Wurzburg in the morning and Rothenberg ob der Tauber in the afternoon.  This morning I elected to stay on the boat for a lovely cruise while Richard went on the shore journey to Wertheim.

Good Morning!  Here's my update on my stay in NYC so far: My friends and (who are all here from California) went to Tony's di Napoli for dinner Monday.  They serve family-style --they serve a dish on a huge platter with enough food for 2 or 3 people.  We had ravioli and the meat eaters had some chicken-eggplant dish. It was very good.

Then it was off to Priscilla, Queen of the Desert.  It was a lot of fun, with a mostly familiar songs.

Yesterday, as DR Ben mentioned, we met him and Anthony for lunch.  We had a great time (and the food was delicious)!  Ben had to go back to work, but Anthony kindly showed us how to get to Washington Square Park and then led us to 7th Avenue so we could see the Village Vanguard.  My fellow Streisand fan, Paul, wanted to see where Barbr had performed a couple of years ago (I was one of the crazies waiting outside for hours that day, just for a glimpse of her majesty).

We then went to the Lion, where Barbra had first performed in 1961.  Then it was to a bar for a drink.

We really didn't have time for dinner, but I wasn't hungry anyway.  We had a 7 pm curtain for Anything Goes.

Unfortunately, Joel Grey was out (actually, the insert in the playbill said that the role of Moonface Martin is " NOW  being played by Robert Creighton," so I guess Mr. Grey is gone for good.  Frankly, I don't know he could have been better than Mr. Creighton.  Sutton Foster was amazing!  How she could still sing after that demanding tap routine in the title song, I can't imagine.  She didn't seem to be out of breath at all.    The other actors were all great too.

So, it was a fun day!   It was so great seeing DR Ben and Anthony!

It's supposed to rain all day today, I guess.  If there had to be a rainy day, I'm glad it's today since we'll be at 2 shows: Spiderman and Follies.

Only two of us are seeing Follies, so all 4 of us are going to enter the lottery for Book of Mormon, to better our chances of winning.  So, here's our dilemma:  thought it's very unlikely, what if 2 of us win the lottery  (we'd have 4 tickets then).  Do we refuse 2 of them and see Follies or take them and try to get rid of the Follies tickets?

If you really want to see MORMON, THEN go see MORMON.  I'm not sure how easy it would be to re-sell your tickets to FOLLIES, but I know a few people who would like to see the show. ;)

And if you do want to stick with FOLLIES, just don't respond when they call the second name in your group.

Back from a brisk walk through Miltenberg with our wonderful guide Claudy.  She told us a lot about the town, using fairy tales as her frame of reference and had a wonderfully animated delivery.  Richard and I stopped in a textile shop on the way back to the boat and bought a woven Christmas runner for our dining room table.

If BK's release is what I think it is, I saw the star in their (gender neutral if grammatically incorrect) Tony winning Sondheim performance.  Let me just say it was not the show to go see after the deaths of my father and his brother.  But I did get to sit next to Mary Tyler Moore.

The Rivalry between Portland and Seattle Hits New Highs (or Lows) Department:  I have been meaning to share this somewhat funny (to me, anyway) anecdote about that Seattle friend who sent the e-card I quoted.  When she and her husband were down here for dinner they mentioned they had had problems with ant infestations in their home, and we shared that we had, too, and that we had been told in no uncertain terms that you must not kill the ants you see, but leave out ant bait which they will take back to the hive/nest, thereby killing them.  We were told if you kill the ones you see, the Queen just sends out more scouts to find food.

So, anyhoo, Pamela hears this and immediately states that they killed the ants they saw and didn't see any more for a while, and she felt that was because (and I'm not making this up) Seattle had a higher order of ants than Portland, ones who sensed that their kin were being killed and knew not to come out anymore.

I finally received my DVD-R of "Lost Horizon" from Warner Archives in yesterday afternoon's mail.

Nothing would do but that I put it into my BD player and see how it looked.

It looked pretty good, actually.  And there is some very good storytelling going into the first 20 minutes or so.   Of course, the payoff is what comes after the first 20 minutes and Boy, oh Boy! Is that a mixed bag!

The generous walk onto the Shangri-la (nee Camelot) set was lovely.  It was a bit faux pretty, too.  John Gielgud, at this stage of his career, could do no wrong in my book.   Even when, in a later scene, wearing a ridiculous red cap (courtesy of Jean Louis??) while giving Peter Finch a walking tour of the city, he was the essence of a noble character.   There are glimpses of non-musical scenes where it looks like a truly wonderful color remake of Capra's classic was in the offing, but then those glimpses fall apart with some mind-numbing musical number occurring that adds nothing to the narrative flow of the film.   Mind you, I think some of those songs are really good and could have added greatly to the impact of the film had they been done correctly (paraphrasing BK's observations).    Sally Kellerman fared well with "The Things I Will Not Miss", but "Reflections" did her no favors.

Everyone has some good moments and everyone has some bad moments.  The film's main weakness is that it's treated as two different TYPES of film - a fantasy-drama and a light-hearted comedy - both musicalized.  A uniform fantasy-drama approach is what it required.

The film could have used an actor's director, too.  Finch has some appallingly awful moments in reaction shots.  Seemingly, the Camelot set requires the male leads to mug mercilessly for comic effect.  It didn't work for Harris and it didn't work for Finch whose first encounter with Liv Ullman seems like a high school encounter between two freshmen.  And the reaction shots of Finch and Gielgud smiling -- BEAMINGLY -- at the end of "The World is a Circle" belies the truth that they were not watching what we had just seen...unless those smiles were intended to denote polite horror.

It was Bobby Van who was a revelation to me.  He should have made more films at this point in his career.  He was funny and appealing, if a bit schticky (which is what his role required).  I am not a fan of the "Question Me An Answer" number because Van's dancing talents are poorly used throughout.  Van was a phenomenal dancer and he was hardly at a point in his life when he could not dazzle us.

I think that, of all the actors, George Kennedy probably comes off best in the "fewest" bad moments category.  Kellerman would be next, then Finch.

Michael York needed some restraints to keep him from chewing the scenery, IMO.  I've always liked York, but he required a directorial tether to keep him from being too over-the-top.  That includes his last scene in the film, which I considered a mercy from all that had gone before.

Bless her heart, Olivia Hussey was hardly a femme fatale, and I think one was needed in her role.   She's not as awful as I remembered her being, however.

I loved all the music that accompanied the dramatic scenes, such as the processionals.  Finch had one truly great song, IMO, that fared better as underscore than it did as a vocal -- If I Could Go Back.  It's totally a Bacharach song...no mistaking its bones, but it's gorgeous.  And he and Ullman share "I Might Frighten Her Away", which is also a very good number.  Presentation might have been exquisite in the proper hands.

And that title song sung by Shawn Phillips....why is it that it really moves me?

As I recall, we had very smart ants in Seattle.

No it is not, it is a man who is able to turn himself into a VAPOR - he then robs banks so that he can give the money to a dancer so that she can have a recital.....after she first buys her self a BLACK 1961 Dodge four door sedan.

And in the English subtitles he is not referred to as Vapor.....but as The Gas Man.

Yep, those new-fangled washers have built in "scales" and sensors that can tell how many clothes you're putting in (by weight), as well as the heft of the fabric.

Reading the reviews most complaints were that there wasn't enough water.  Some people do all loads with an extra rinse, other set the load as if it were heavier which I don't think I can do on my machine.

I read your comment & realized I forgot to check if my extra large load, suited to my new machine, had enough water.  Oh well.

I think I've finally unwound.   I didn't realize how stressed I was as of late until I tried to take Monday and Tuesday off and was feeling really panicked over things I didn't need to panic about.  So I decided instead of heading back to work, I needed to really take the week off instead of pretending I took it off and working at the office by myself, so I didn't go to work today.  It took me a couple days to unwind.  Now I'm very excited about Chicago.  I need to be sure to charge my camera tonight as I will want to take many photos.

Be glad you are safe and snug on your cruise ship, Ginny, and not in the dangerous state of Ohio where many exotic animals escaped last night from a habitat in Zanesville.   It seems it was a suicide gesture by the keeper/owner of the animals...he freed them, many of them wild and dangerous, and then took his own life.

I know they were being rounded up...but who knows where some of them might have gotten to.

I've been watching, for the first time, the animated film 'The Illusionist' made from Jacques Tati's script. What a wonderful, bittersweet yet life-enhancing film. Such a change to see traditional animation being used as well.

I finally received my DVD-R of "Lost Horizon" from Warner Archives in yesterday afternoon's mail.

Nothing would do but that I put it into my BD player and see how it looked.

And that title song sung by Shawn Phillips....why is it that it really moves me?

I agree, Ron, I love the title song.  I wonder why they selected Shawn Phillips to sing the title song.  I think that Bobby Van might have done a nice version of the song - as would Guy Haines.

JRand, The Human Vapor sounds interesting. Very intriguing title. Especially if it's a story of alcoholism. And I doubt that.

No it is not, it is a man who is able to turn himself into a VAPOR - he then robs banks so that he can give the money to a dancer so that she can have a recital.....

After watching her perform ANYTHING GOES on the TODAY SHOW, someone, here, mentioned that it seemed strange that Sutton Foster turned upstage in the middle of the dance break.  I think that was the only chance she had to gasp for breath in the whole number.

Depends on where the actor was in his career.  Sometimes if they couldn't get the position they wanted up front, they'd do the And as thing at the end.  Adding the character name makes it seem more important.

And I also just finished watching the musical version of Lost Horizon including the fertility dance. The only thing I thought of while watching it was all the barefoot dancers leaping and jumping and hitting the cement ground. I wondered if they did any damage to their feet and legs.
Wow, did they ever explain where the cement factories were in the Himalayas so they could make Shangri-La?

Thank you all for the vibes and prayers on behalf of my friend Joan. She died yesterday. I don't have any other word from church about what will happen other than there will a service but not a funeral as she had chosen to be cremated.

Looks like the first three chapters of the book are about finished and a fourth is well under way with bits and pieces of the rest coming together. there is not daylight yet and there won't be a for a few weeks, but it's progressing, even if school work is not.

Good evening all, I really should pack.  I've been sitting around after getting home from band practice.   I stopped and got cat food on the way to rehearsal, so we're stocked up. Checked in with the house/cat sitter, she's all ready to come over tomorrow, got my materials for the seminar all downloaded into my lap top, now I just need to pack.

I am going to see if I can figure out how to get downtown from Ohare on the train.  I know I won't end up right next to the hotel, but it's got to be a lot cheaper to cab from the train stop than to cab from Ohare.

So, it's going to take a train, a bus and a walk if I go public transport.

Finished with my viewing.  All I've eaten all day is a turkey sandwich and some onion rings.  I'm thinking I should probably hie myself to Jerry's and have their chopped salad - almost no calories when you just use the red wine vinegar and a drop or two of oil.  Or maybe I won't, since it's a little late.

I am making deviled eggs.

are you using Skip's spectacular deviled egg recipe?

I don't have his recipe. I would be happy to try it, though.

This time it was the cocktail meatballs and the deviled eggs that were most popular.

Back from having a chopped salad - just what I needed.
