Title: SPOT DAY
Post by: bk on June 04, 2004, 12:00:09 AM
Well, you've read the notes, you've learned all sorts of new details, and now it is time to do a spot of posting.  To it, I say. 8)

And just to carry through on a post from late Thursday...

I'm going to start a new daily feature...

"YOU'D NEVER GUESS THEY WERE HUNGARIAN..."

Our first Magyar is the ulitmate British gentleman. [DRUM ROLL]
LESLIE HOWARD - (b. 4/3/1893, London, d. 6/1/1943),
"Born Lászlo Steiner to Hungarian parents, Lilian and Frank Steiner, in London. Frank worked as a stockbroker. Leslie's younger years were spent in Vienna.  After school, Leslie worked as a bank clerk until the outbreak of World War I. In 1917, diagnosed as shell shocked, he was advised to take up acting as therapy. In a few years, his name was known on the stages of London and New York. He became known as the perfect Englishman, slim, tall, intellectual and sensitive, a part that he would play in many movies."

And a Jew who, in Gone With the Wind, played Ashley Wilkes, a Southern gentleman of the Civil War era, with a British accent.  Go know.

Let me just say that I love eBay.  "I love eBay."  There, I've said it and I'm proud.  Why do I love eBay?  I love eBay because I just got the first three seasons of "Queer As Folk" on DVD from China (okay, there is Chinese lettering all over the packaging...which is different than the US packaging...and all the discs are in individual thin plastic sleeves and not the individual fold-out holders), but the discs themselves are supposed to be the US releases.  And what, you may ask, is otherwise so special about the Chinese releases of "Queer As Folk" that I got on eBay?  Well, I realize that I got a deal from a specific seller, but instead of paying as much as $350 for all three seasons (which is the full, list price), or even amazon.com's $245 discounted price (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B0001F6KLC/qid=1086336559/sr=8-3/ref=pd_ka_3/102-9499049-9840956?v=glance&s=dvd&n=507846), I paid (not including shipping) $40.95!  I won three different auctions from the same seller and was able to combine the shipping for $20 (instead of $12 each, if I had gotten them individually).  That's a total of $60.95 for all three seasons of "Queer As Folk!"  And they arrived Thursday (yesterday)!!  That's why I love eBay.  Thank you.  And that's what's in my DVD player. ;D ;) ;D

In my CD player:  Nellie McKay's "Get Away From Me."  I love this CD (actually it's a two-CD set, but the full price is not more than $11 to $13 dollars--and I checked it out from my local library).  I highly recommend this CD.  She's only 19 years old, she wrote and produced all of the songs and she's so unusual (a Cyndi Lauper reference) and the songs are so diverse that you can't help but love it...well, I can't.  I first listened to it this past weekend and I liked it then, but I love it now.  She has two websites, www.nelliemckay.com and www.nelliemckay.net.  Check them both out!

Interesting.
Read an article about Shirley Jones that says her last Broadway stage appearance was 35 years ago in Maggie May.

Yet her Playbill bio says it was 40 years ago in a revival of South Pacific with Jack Cassidy. And her bio doesn't even mention Maggie May.

And she is still married to Marty Ingels. Didn't they get a divorce because of all the strange this Mr. Ingels does?

Michael, It was Maggie Flynn (she co-starred with Jack Cassidy) in 1968. I remember hearing an interview with Shirley Jones in which she compared that score with Rodgers and Hammerstein at their finest.

And, after yesterday's talk of the new biopic, the CD currently playing is Susannah McCorkle - Songs of Cole Porter.

DR MS - they were separated, but Marty camped out on the lawn until she took him back....literally camped out - in a tent!  And Shirley and Jack missed so many performances of MAGGIE MAY, she might have forgotten she did it.   :D

DR GEORGE thanks for the Tony Tally yesterday - and DRJOSE's late votes, but in under the wire.  Interesting.  And ONLY ten voters?   Oh well.

Here in Indiana (and I thought JASON wrote Jewish Acres Theatre - until I looked again Amish Acres....) we have a tape delay as well, and so our show will not start until 9 pm Eastern time, but it will be 8 pm here....we are on Chicago time right now.  It's so Hungarian!

CD Player - South Pacific soundtrack
VCR - Born to Be Bad - Joan Fontaine is so born to be bad.....
DVD - The Day the Earth Stood Still - Gort, Klaatu barada nikto!
Phonograph - BONANZA - Ponderosa Party Time!

Miss Julie Harris has the most Tonys as a performer (mentioned yesterday by Matt H) with 5 and Mr. Hal Prince has the most of all with 20 and Mr. Mike Nichols (married to Ms. Diane Sawyer) has 5 Tonys for Dramatic Direction (distinction made at the official Tony Web site). They are as follows:

Barefoot in the Park (1964), Luv and The Odd Couple (1965), Plaza Suite (1968), The Prisoner of Second Avenue (1972) and The Real Thing (1984).

I don't know what I'm listening to at the office today. Anthony got home from Dance class yesterday and we decided to watch Two's Company last night instead of some time this weekend. We have a few things waiting to be viewed on the VCR but I can't remember what they are.

Iwill be going to my own annual Tony party on Sunday. It's just my two theatre buddies, Anthony and neighbors of one of my theatre buds from across the hall. We order take out and watch from the New York One (our local all news channel and the one good thing that Time-Warner Cable of New York City has ever done IMHO) Red Carpet arrivals at Radio City, then switch to the on-line distribution of the technical awards at 7ish and then switch to CBS for the big enchilada. I miss the first hour being on PBS but at least CBS has given 3 hours over to the show.

Jason, are you going to Arizona? Or Kerry, are you coming here?

Is there any controversy over the name "Amish Acres Dinner Theatre"? I did a double-take when I first read it.

Speaking of the Amish (Mennonites, in Ontario), in "Betrayed," on The Producers CD, when Max sees someone else's life flashing before him he says, "I'm not a hillbilly. I grew up in the Bronx." But in the Toronto production, it's, "I'm not Amish. I grew up in the Bronx." It couldn't be a regional thing, since Canadians would understand "hillbilly" as much as "Amish." So why the change?

[move=left,scroll,6,transparent,100%]Why can't it be TONY DALE weekend? ? ? ?[/move]

i've got media in all the players

cd:  Original Australia Cast:  ONLY HEAVEN KNOWS.  catchy tunes.  gorgeous title ballad, too.  I might want to take the ferry to the zoo after listening to this more and more.

dvd:  EURO TRIP, which, surprisingly enough, I found endearing: it is first and foremost,  a "Teen Comedy;" but it has something which most other ones don't have, a heart.
BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER: Season Six:  omigod! i was completely and totally shocked (in a good way) in the paths that Joss Whedon has had his characters go on in this season!  Strange that I should be finishing this season, which deals graphically with *addiction,* at the same time that i had viewed Danny Boyle's remarkable TRAINSPOTTING.  For those DRs who have followed BUFFY, I just finished the episode titled, "Seeing Red;" in which Buffy (the heavenly Sarah Michelle Geller) finally came face to face with "The Troika," smashing Warren's orbs.
VCR:  CRUISING w/Al Pacino.

CD - The Re-Mastered and extended A STAR IS BORN '54

DVD - Now that the deluge of new releases is over I'll catch up on some of the recent titles I bought but have not watched

VHS - A 90 minute (with commercials) 1967 tv production of KISMET done like a Vegas Tab show with 2 songs cut, other songs shortened and the basic outline of the plot retained with some dialogue changes and cuts.  It stars Jose Ferrar (who can act but not sing), Anna Maria Albregetti (who can sing but not act), Barbara Eden (who doesn't understand her character but is finally allowed to show her navel), George Chakiris (with a bubble haircut that would make Annette envious) and Hans Conreid (excellent as always).  Bob Mackie did the costumes and it shows.

I'm confused.  Did it get to be MBarnum weekend all of a sudden?

Someone burned me a Bette Midler CD, but I can't get it to play.  The other CDs are William Finn: Infinite Joy and Falsettoland

I'm off to give another of my relentless walking tours (to the www.WeddingMusical.com stage director and Maid of Honor).  Today, it's Lower Manhattan.  "At the Fulton Market now he yells fish"  "the Woolworth Tower" "the Battery's down" ...ah, the Comden & Green references abound.

Nothing DVD or CD or the like.  It's a live theater week.

From the Ford Theater to Assassins.  There's a link here.

My co-worker Chris liked when I discribed the poster for Assassins as a guy sticking out his finger, like he's about to say "Pull it!"

JRand53, I wondered about a possible controversy because "Jewish Acres Dinner Theatre" sounds inappropriate (not to mention that the brisket, cabbage rolls, matzah balls and strudel would put everyone to sleep before the show), so why wouldn't "Amish Acres"? I guess the Amish are okay with (or just ignore) the idea of a tourist spot named after them.

Hiya, gang!

Is this really my last day??? Am I really leaving New York tomorrow??? How time do fly. I just don't want to leave.

I've had such a lovely visit - I saw many old friends, and at least 3 new ones: Elmore, Jason and Ben who took me to dinner on Tuesday at Joe Allen, and made me laugh, and I'll be back, fellas. And I've seen 4-count 'em-4 shows: the incredibly great Assassins on Sunday, Phantom on Tuesday (came outa there whistling the scenery- whatta show!), The Producers on Wednesday (gosh, I LOVE that show!!!) and Barbara Cook's new concert show last night at Lincoln Center. Oh, my - do yourself a favor and go hear that one. She and Wally are just sublime. The finale is - I kid you not - Glitter and Be Gay! And Ms. Cook's splendid voice sings ALL THE NOTES.

I went back after, to say hi to Wally (he played a concert for me back in 1974!) and reminisce; and to hug Barbara, whom I have known and loved for the 30 years since I first met her in Los Angeles. When I grow up, I wanna be Barbara Cook.

Oh, the girl can still sing better than anyone out there. The audience were alternately convulsed with laughter and awash in tears. She plays us like a violin.

Anyway, a year and a half ago when I saw her Mostly Sondheim show here and in Seattle, I showed her my manuscript and several working titles : Cheap Trills, A Little Trouper, etc- and she is the one who said, "It HAS to be Jewish Thighs on Broadway!" So, when I finally handed her a copy last night, she crowed, "You did it!" Just to be in her presence is to be energized and restored. She is very like the sun - a truly radiant Being.

So, Pen, what are we gonna do today? Whatever it turns out to be, I know I'm moving back here in the near future. I'm coming home.

Post by: Ben on June 04, 2004, 06:52:29 AM
Penny, so glad you liked Barbara! I saw the first run before she went across the pond to England. She is sublime. I can't gush over her enough. Her finale was hysterical and wonderful at the same time. She is a wonderful human being. My theatre buddies and I saw Mostly Sondheim two years ago and waited like Stage Door Johnnies afterwards and spoke to both Wally Harper and her. There were about 10 people waiting for her, all strangers but fans, and she spoke to each person individually for a few minutes each. She is CLASS. If you're in New York I urge you to see the show. It's not on TDF E-tix right now but I have seen the show posted on TKTS. She's downstairs at the Mitzi Newhouse this time. It's a smaller theatre so the show should be even more wonderful and intimate.

The media check of me:

CD Player (at home):  Dave Matthews Band -- On These Crowded Streets

CD Player (at work):  Two Gentlemen of Verona OCR .  This show still works for me, but if you listen to this recording enough times, you come to realize how sloppy it is.  Lots of lazy vocals and meandering production.

DVD Player:  The next-to-final disc of the Lost In Space First Season set.

VCR:  The Willie Nelson concert that was broadcast Monday night.

Last night I watched Tarzan the Ape Man on TCM.  That was a pretty disturbing movie, much more violent than I would have expected and very backwards in its views on society and nature.  On the other hand, it does have Maureen O'Sullivan and Johnny Weissmuller, neither of which are hard on the eyes.

Speaking of Tarzan, the BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW THEY WERE HUNGARIAN for today is...[DRUM ROLL]

JOHNNY WEISSMULLER (b. 6/2/1904, Szabadfalu (Freisdorf), Hungary, [awarded to Rumania after WWI], d. 1/20/1984, Acapulco, Mexico.
"Johnny was born Janos Weiszmueller in Szabadfulu (Freetown or in German, Freidorf), near Temesvar [now Timisoara after Rumanian annexation] in the Banat region of Hungary where many "Schwabians" / "Donauschwaben" / "Danube Swabians" or ethnic Germans had settled after the pullout of the Ottoman Turks in the 17th century. His parents were Peter Weiszmueller, a day worker from Varjas, and Erzsebet Kersch, of Szabadfalu (the name for Freidorf at the time). His Godparents were Janos Borstner and Katharina Erbesz. The Weissmuller family arrived in New York on the S.S. Rotterdam on Jan 26, 1905 when Johnny was three. [NOTE FROM PANNI: THIS DOES NOT ADD UP, NOT IF HE WAS BORN IN 1904 - SO ONE OF THE DATES IS WRONG.]

Johnny often claimed he was born in Windber, PA because of Olympic eligibility issues."

DR Panni, do you get to nominate in all categories or only in the writing categories? I have some suggestions if you have all categories open to you.

Basically, everything that is aired within certain dates in Prime Time can be nominated... I vote in the writing - which in itself is a thick booklet - movies, specials, dramas, sitcoms, children's special, children's weekly, animation, etc., all with their own categories  - and I also vote in some other categories (can't remember for the life of me) - I think it's best movie, drama, sitcom, etc. - but I'm not sure. I didn't volunteer this year to judge who gets into the writing finals - so I just vote on the finalists.
I don't vote for directors, music, costumes, etc. Each Peer Group votes in its own specialty.

Must shower and get to work. The good thing about a home office is that the only chewing in the vicinity is the wonderdog. And I can always tell him to go lie down and be quiet. Guess you can't do that with Licorice Man.

Thanks for the info.

OK, another question for all DRs out there who are fans of the Toho Studios monster releases:

My favorite has always been RODAN. I see that there is a full frame (I guess it was full frame in its original release), English-dubbed release on Sony. Does anyone have it? How is its quality? The dubbing doesn't bother me since that's the way I saw it and loved it as a kid.

DR MattH, I have the RODAN dvd but haven't watched it yet. I have heard it isn't an ideal print, but since you can find it for around $5.99 now I don't think you can lose. I will take a gander at it when I get home and report back. I love the film and even if the print is a little scratchy that won't bother me in the least. I have on VHS someplace the original Japanese language version too.

My hope is for someone to release Toho's THE H-MAN on DVD! Now that is a cool movie and has much of the same cast as RODAN!

DRMATT I also have the RODAN disk...I bought it along with three GODZILLA features.  If you like the movies, you'll like the disks.  A bit faded, but there is a 5.1 surround mix on some of them, RODAN included, along with new title sequences, and the menus are fun as well.  Live a little, sometimes if you are like me, you want to see them again...and here they are!

Don't think about it, Michael...at least you still have a cubicle!

I am enjoying the Hungarian of the Day feature as well.  I think everyone should have their own "of the day."  Of course I do the Allison Hayes Picture of the Week - so it's all up to you.

STATE FAIR opening night went better than could be expected, audience enjoyed it, and yes DRPANNI my fingers are tired.  Unfortunately there are so many people in the curtain call we don't stand a chance of a standing ovation, they have already been clapping for a LONG time!

DR PANNI do you want me to post your pic again today in case not everyone saw it?

Your CD should go out today, I hope. The mail meter is screwed up, so it may have to wait until Monday, I'm afraid...but it's coming!!

CD Player: John Bucchino "Grateful" (what a great album), PHANTOM OF THE OPERA and VIOLET.

DVD: Nothing right now.

VHS: Still broken. :-\ My dad will have to tape the Tonys for me this year...

Media Check:
DVD: Empty (we're really not movie people....)
VCR: Empty now, but will have a tape in it soon, for Sunday night's theatre fest.
CD/Car: MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG
CD/Office:  Laurie Beechman/"Time Between the Time"

Aside from being the Tony's (R), Sunday afternoon is also the awards ceremony for Rochester's Stars of Tomorrow program.  For DRs who have not caught my prior mentions of this, it is a program similar to the Tony's (R)but for high school shows, and for which I am one of the judges.  The area covered is far greater than metro-Rochester itself, and in my division alone (there are 3 divisions, based on school population), we logged OVER 800 miles traveling to and from shows.  And remember, Rochester can get pretty snowy and icy in those winter months.....

We (my fellow judges and I, but especially I) have high hopes for a lovely actress who played IRENE in, of all places, Romulus, NY.  But we won't know 'til that envelope is opened Sunday afternoon!

And, the ceremony gets taped, and broadcast IN PRIME TIME on the local NBC affilliate.  And includes several interview segments, including one with yours truly.....

Then home to watch Hugh Jackman shake his maracas!  (well, only for ONE of the numbers, I guess....)

The Sony Godzilla and Rodan DVDs are adequate, nothing more.  I have the Japanese laserdisc of Rodan (sans subtitles, unfortunately) but it is spectacular, color and image.  It is full frame if I recall - Japan didn't really do much 1:85 - it seemed to be full frame or directly to scope.  I'm sure at some point they made the switch, but it wouldn't have been in 1956.  I seem to recall they did a reissue of Godzilla (the Raymond Burr version!) in Japan in 1960, and that was artifically converted to 1:85, so maybe that was the first year.

Here's my post on spot day (has anyone else noticed that "post" is an anagram of "spot?" Isn't that just too too?)

DVD: nothing new, although I'll probably be renting "Matrix: Revolutions" just to get that business done with
VHS: "Spinal Tap" (can't believe I've NEVER seen the movie)
CD: "Parvarim: 40 years of music" (box set of Israeli folk duo, including an album of Simon & Garfunkel songs in Hebrew!), followed by Audra McDonald's "Way Back to Paradise"

Oh, knowing as I do that there are some fans of bk's very good friend Mr. Sondheim on this board: are there any fellow fans of Sondheim's puzzle of choice, the cryptic crossword? I've recently become quite addicted, although I really haven't found too many of 'em on this side of the pond (Sondheim's collection, as we all know, is long out-of-print and obscenely rare...)

MR BK that was very nice of you to not place ALL the Blame for MAME on Miss Lucille Ball.  She may have had some delusions, but I think she deserved to expect the EXPERTS in the recording studio to do their best to protect her.  I still like the CD - but then I LOVE LUCY and I am even looking forward to the August DVD release of the HERE'S LUCY episodes.

I think we have discussed this before, and I know it is not an ASK day, but have any DR's ever appeared on a game or panel show?  What happened?

I had a friend many years ago, whose parents were on a show called BRIDE AND GROOM....of course they weren't still married, but the whole idea fascinated me.

I had an upsetting experience last night (but with a happy ending). My friend Jean joined me for Archie's evening walk. We took the boardwalk along Lake Ontario, and it turned dark as we headed back through a wooded area toward the bridge over the Humber River. There we saw a little boy, standing completely alone. He may have been three years old and he was almost hidden by the bushes around him. Jean and I stopped to ask where his parents were - it was getting darker, and the scene was pretty deserted. He didn't reply - he just pointed to the bridge. Jean stayed with the boy while I went to look for a parent or a policeman. (It made obvious sense that Jean, not I, would be the one alone with the child.) I couldn't find either, and returned to the scene. It was several minutes before a man returned. He explained in very broken English that he had lost his roller skate and had gone back to find it. I asked the little boy if the man was his daddy. He obviously was - they spoke to each other in the same language, and the child nodded. We shook our heads in disapproval, but I don't think the father understood our concern.

I may not have this entirely right, but in Jerry Herman's autobiography - which I read some years ago - he said that Lucy's singing was so dreadful that for one word (maybe "today" in it's today?) they had to patch together syllables from different takes. (Does that make sense?)

Never been on a game show. Friends say I should try to get on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire since I have a lot of trivial knowledge stuck into my brain. I know I could at least get up to $32,000 probably without using a lifeline. The questions get harder (obviously) the closer you get to $1,000,000 and they do things like sticking science and math (sorry WOF) and sports questions in there which would be my downfall.

You could have just put some clothes on, Dan.

This happened to a neighbor. He was standing toward the window just as the window washers made their descent. He didn't have time to flee (or, apparently, grab a towel) - so he quckly turned his back to the window, forgetting that he was staring into a full-length mirror. Of course, the view in the mirror included a couple of laughing window washers.

Thank you, MBarnum. Yes, the house is cute and TINY. I really like the people who own "The Big House" and I adore the neighborhood. But I don't know how much longer I can take the TINY space without going MAD... MAD, I tell you! Plus, it's downright dangerous, man! Late last night I was hurrying to my desk, deep in thought, tripped on something (cute Abie's squeek toy, I think), lost my balance and fell against the desk, catching myself on my laptop. Not a good idea.

Good Afternoon!

-Well, actually it still feels like "Good Morning" to me right now...  All my "plans" for getting up early went by the wayside this morning, but my sleeping in may have an upshot so...

I moved from the bed to the really comfy couch around 10:30... Then finally got off the couch around 1:30 (after "Y&R" ;)).  So...  I'm doing a load of laundry, and then I need to start packing... And since I only have my clothes and my kitchen stuff to pack up, it shouldn't take too long at all... And since I slept in, I should now be awake enough to go ahead and head back to Richmond tonight after the closing night party (that's the upshot)... We shall see how the day progresses.

I just wish the weather wasn't so gray and gloomy today - and the rain is supposed to move in tonight too.  The gray is just making me feel tired, so... I guess that's sort of appropriate for a closing night.

Topic of the Day: Nothing... BUT starting next week, watch out!  Again, we'll see...

DR Panni - I don't think we're in widescreen, but on my laptop it does seem a little "enhanced", but that's not a bad thing. ;)

To tie up some of the posts from today...  I did a summer at Amish Acres Round Barn Theatre in Nappanee, Indiana, and my first show there was Rodgers & Hammerstein's State Fair.  -In fact, it was the first production of the show post-Broadway - well, I think there was one done by a larger theatre a few months before.  In any case, my piano/conductor score turned out the be the original one used by Kay Cameron on the tour - all her markings were in it - in pencil!

OK - Time to start packing up...  -sort of a Brigadoon reference...

"Jeannie's packing up
Jeannie's moving out..."

-Oh, and when I did the show in high school, of course, the alternate lyric to that song was a bit "adult"...

"Jose's packing up
Jose's _______ out..."

 :o

YES!  I must start packing!

-OH!!! And during the chase, can you figure out what we sang instead of "Harry Beaton..."  ?!?!?!?   :-X

As for what you sing instaed of "Harry Beaton"....was it something dirty???   Or did you substitute "Henry Higgins"?

First of all, thanks everyone for all the lovely sentiments about Cully. He was a swell dog.  If you look in the dictionary under "staunch" there'd be a picture of the Cullster.  He also had the sweetest, most benign temperment for a dog I've ever seen. He was also very smart/  And he was a mama's boy; he bonded with Julieanne and would wait for her in the front hall to come home at night when his day truly began.  We used to call him Cully-Wait-By-The-Window for his steadfast expectancy.  We also used to call him Hoover because he could find any speck of anything edible (and with Cully that included a lot that wouldn't normally be edible) and Hoover it with his muzzle on the floor.

Oddly, enough he was destined to be our dog.  We both had seen him in a pet store in Century City seperately at various different times and had both been tempted to buy him on impulse.  He was absolutely gorgeous, but for some reason was not selling and each time, either I or Julieanne would go by, his price had been dropped.  It was heartbreaking.  He always had such a look of eager-to-please earnestness about his face.  We both always resisted our urge to buy him because we had in our minds getting another Yorkie.  And then that November we found Humbug, our golden cocker.  That December for Christmas, our friend Larry got a dog from a girlfriend (who was dumping him) -- It was Cully!  Though Larry tried valiantly, his lifestyle was not suited to having a pet.  When I was going off to shoot DRAGONHEART in Slovakia, Julieanne wanted a companion dog for Humbug.  I said:  "Humbug loves Cully.  Let's asks Larry if he wants us to take him off his hands."  We did.  He did.  And Cully...who was always destined to be ours...made his circuitious route into the family.  And our hearts.  Thanks  again, for all the well-wishes.

Did anyone else watch Tarzan And His Mate last night on TCM?  Bob Osbourne goes on at length about the restored nude swimming scene. Telling how it's in the new DVD pack of M-G-M Tarzan films, etc.  Then they show a version where the "nude" scene is cut!  I think they better re-check the version that's going out in the pack next week.

There was also a nice documentary on the films with pals, Rudy Behlmer and Tracy Griffin, ERB authority and once president of my Branch of the Burroughs Bibliophile...The LA Sub-ERBS.

SPOILERS!  READ NO FURTHER IN THIS SECTION.  IF YOU DON'T WANT TO KNOW DETAILS ABOUT BUNNY LAKE!

I watched Bunny Lake Is Missing the other night, having forgotten most of it. Aside from Laurence Olivier's rather unusual performance and clips of the Zombies on the pub TV...the film's a bit of a dud.  Keir Dullea is telegraphing his performance so much that you say: "It can't be him."  he's making it way too obvious...but unfortunately it stays obvious.  And then when Carol Lynley leads him into childhood reversion, I'm sure she's actually going to wander around with a blindfold over her face, playing blindman's bluff, for a full minute while her child is in jeopardy. Peek you idiot! That whole scene goes on too long and is interminable, especially the swings part.  And the American child who speaks with a British accent. And Noel Coward as a womanizer!  It's such a transparent and badly constructed mystery.  The police could have checked two things immediately that would have answered their most nagging question.  The passenger list of the steamers (getting the name of the boat from her...not the weirdo brother) and , even more simple, check with American passport authorities as to whether a passport had been issued for Bunny Lake.  Badly conceived murder plot, incompetent villain who planned it, some embarrassing performances.

END OF SPOILERS!

DVD...Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, a TV play with Jack Palance...the best Jekyll & Hyde I've ever seen.

CD...THE VERY BEST OF DUSTY SPRINGFIELD

DRCHARLESPOGUE - a TCMPROGRAMMER just wrote on the TCM message board that WB had shipped the wrong film to them - the cut rather than the full version, but that the full version would be shown in the near future.

This is all well and good, but they had a short film following it that fit the time pretty well....for a 95 but NOT a 105 minute film.  Hmmmmmmm.....

Not sure what the melodic intent was above, but the one that went through my head was to "Rose's Turn"  (Momma's lettin' go, Momma's doin' fine....).

As for what you sing instaed of "Harry Beaton"....was it something dirty???   Or did you substitute "Henry Higgins"?

As for the alternate lyrics, just remember we were in high school, so....

For "Jeannie's packing up, Jeannie's moving out..." just substitute "putting" for "moving"...

And as for "Harry Beaton"... Well, let's just say he instead of being "on" he was "off"...   :o :-X

Ah, the joys and foibles of adolescence!  -And in a Catholic high school no less!?!?!?

Oh, and a Topic of the Day update:

Music to pack by: Donny Osmond's "Somewhere in Time" - I just love the whole retro-ness of this album.

And now from the ridiculous to the sublime: Avenue Q OCR.

DR Jrand - As for Amish Acres doing State Fair:  Yes, it was quite the big deal.  Richard Pletcher, the producer and owner of Amish Acres somehow managed to secure the rights to the show before anyone else - and they weren't even "publicly" on the market yet.  That was actually quite a big season for them since they brought in Scott Schwartz to direct The Baker's Wife too - and had his father, Stephen, come in for the opening night.  And the stage there is actually named in honor of Joseph Stein.  If anyone is interested, you can check out:

www.amishacres.com (http://www.amishacres.com)

And to tie this thread up, I made a very dear friend that summer, Leigh.  -And trust me, at that time, we all needed good friends.

OK - Back to packing.  Clothes are done - Now for the kitchen... *I'm afraid I'm going to have to throw away a bunch of perishables - I hate when that happens, but I'll see what I can throw into a cooler with some ice.  -OH, and then it's on to all the "little things" that have accumulated over the past 12 weeks.. Hmm... Maybe I will head back in the morning..  Hmmm...

How exciting! A very young me is in that film! You won't find me if you blink (in a couple of scenes) - but what fun it was. I've posted before about how I almost missed one of my mother's weddings because rehearsal ran over and Tessie O'Shea stole my cab. And how Jack Palance refused to let a stunt double run across the rafters and he (Palance) fell to the very hard floor of the CBC studio, badly injuring his back so that he couldn't even lift the girls (including me - and I ain't heavy).

Lovely reminiscences of Cully.

TCM has shown the complete TARZAN AND HIS MATE before, because I taped it. This was at least a year ago and maybe longer. It was actually around the time an uncut videotape of TARZAN AND HIS MATE was released, so that would probably make it something like three or four years ago before DVDs became so popular.

That's not an acceptable Tony speech, bk! Everybody thanks God and agents and parents and significant others... You thank no one? In this instance, thanking your (weird) parents would for once be quite appropriate. I am leaving now, Dear Readers, for a sojourn to Ojai, California to attend one of the concerts in this year's Ojai Music Festival.

(If I leave now, it will take me about 90 minutes to get there.  If I leave in an hour, it will take me about three hours to get there!)

The concerts are held in an intimate outdoor amphitheatre.  The second half of tonight's program is comprised of Die Kluge (which translates as "The Wise Woman"), a rarely performed opera by Carl Orff.  Of course, Mr. Orff is best known for that perennial concert hall (and movie trailer) favorite, Carmina Burana.

I won't be home until late, so keep the home fries burning, Dear Readers out there in the dark.

Guess what I saw today??  A real live WATERSPOUT!  I have always wanted to see either a waterspout or a tornado (not that I want anyone or anything to be hurt so I could see one) and I finely saw one!

It was so beautiful.  It was just a small one.  It looked about as thick as a pencil and only lasted a few minutes but it was something to see.  So graceful.  Like a ribbon floating in the sky.

Danise: Guess what I saw today? I saw a rather stout woman standing on the street trying to get a cab. No one would stop for her. I saw her skirt fly up a bit, but I thought it was maybe a gust of wind or something. But then I saw her lift it again a little higher and I thought I saw something that I shouldn't have seen. Then she did it twice again, pulling the skirt all the way up to her belly-button, clearly showing something that I shouldn't have been seeing--let's just say she wasn't wearing any underwear! Only in New York...

Talk about using different syllables from different takes (as bk did earlier)....  Take a look at this from USA Today:

Cochran's latest includes spirit of Twitty

Country singer Anita Cochran's new single features a ghostly surprise — the voice of the late Conway Twitty. But (I Want to Hear) A Cheatin' Song isn't a song Twitty ever sang. Cochran wrote it two years ago. Twitty died in 1993.

Cochran assembled the five-line vocal track from samples of 1980s Twitty records. None was longer than three words; some were shorter than one.

"He sang the word 'song' a bunch of times, but we couldn't find it in the right pitch," Cochran says. "So we took the word 'wrong,' took the 'wr' off it and put on 's' to build the word 'song.'"

Twitty's widow, Dee Henry Jenkins, says, "We had recorded things digitally, and I knew what miracles could take place, but this was a whole different thing. I think Conway would have thought it was a great idea."

So the song will be Conway - but "it's only make believe". Maybe he's never been this far before. C'est Si Bon!
You may need to be a touch over 50 for the references.

Made a curious discovery at the local 99 Cents Only Store today...99c DVDs.  I took a chance on several.  Surprisingly, their pictures are clear (I'm not an expert on this transfer stuff like some here...only on what I can tolerate after years of watching movies on local TV stations before cable) and the sound isn't mushy.  Most of it seems to be  pd stuff that's been around in various forms...but hey, 99cents?  I got MEET JOHN DOE; MR. MOTO'S LAST WARNING; MR. WONG, DETECTIVE; PENNY SERENADE; BULLDOG DRUMMOND COMES BACK; LAST MAN ON EARTH (with Vinnie Price...the 1st adaptation of I AM LEGEND, I believe); and a DVD of 3 Jack Benny TV episodes.  They had lots more TV...Dick Van Dyke, Red Skelton, Bonanza, Ozzie & Harriett, Mr. & Mrs. North...and more pd films like THE LITTLE PRINCESS, DRESSED TO KILL, DOA, etc.  They're packaged rather cheaply in in simple  cardboard sleeve envelopes, but could be transferred to jewell boxes.

Sandra I’m trying to decide if I would eat Floop.  What is the white stuff and is that pepperoni or peppers?

Bruce, I’m sure you had more fun with your imagination than with the link I posted.

Panni, if it makes you feel better, Keith gets after me to eat when my weight drops.  At the moment that isn’t an issue, but it can be when I’m distracted.  When I was in LA while my Dad was in the hospital I had to give Keith a constant report on what I was eating.  So obviously Bruce cares.

I’m here.  We were out on the lawn with Echo enjoying the summer like evening.

I once had fresh raw beets in a salad and was shocked they tasted okay.  But pickled beets or borscht-no way.  I find pickled beets completely overwhelm every other flavor around them, and then there is the juice that spreads all over the place.  If the beets touch other food then that food is ruined for me.  I even have trouble tolerating the smell.

For our mental delectation (To quote BK):

pick·le    ( P )  Pronunciation Key  (pkl)
n.

1.   An edible product, such as a cucumber, that has been preserved and flavored in a solution of brine or vinegar.
2.   A solution of brine or vinegar, often spiced, for preserving and flavoring food.
3.   A chemical solution, such as an acid, that is used as a bath to remove scale and oxides from the surface of metals before plating or finishing.
4.   Informal. A disagreeable or troublesome situation; a plight. See Synonyms at predicament.
5.   Baseball. A rundown.

tr.v. pick·led, pick·ling, pick·les

1.   To preserve or flavor (food) in a solution of brine or vinegar.
2.   To treat (metal) in a chemical bath.

------------------------------------------------------------------------
[Middle English pikle, highly seasoned sauce, probably from Middle Dutch pekel, pickle, brine.]

Word History: Trade with the Low Countries across the North Sea was important to England in the later Middle Ages, and it is perhaps because of this trade that we have the word pickle. Middle English pikel, the ancestor of our word, is first recorded around 1400 with the meaning “a spicy sauce or gravy served with meat or fowl.” This is a different sense from the one the word brings to mind now, but it is somewhat related in sense to its possible Middle Dutch source pekel, a solution, such as spiced brine, for preserving and flavoring food. After coming into English the word pickle expanded its sense range in several ways. It was applied, as it had been in Middle Dutch, to a pickling solution. Later pickle was used to refer to something so treated, such as a cucumber. The word also took on a figurative sense, “a troublesome situation,” perhaps under the influence of a similar Dutch usage in the phrase in de pekel zitten, “sit in the pickle,” and iemand in de pekel laten zitten, “let someone sit in the pickle.”

Today's media check:

In the CD player:
All Rozsa, all the time...Lust for Life, Knights of the Round Table/The King's Thief and The World, the Flesh and the Devil.  (I love Film Score Monthly's CDs.  But their liner notes are usually rather badly-written.  Nick Redman does a bang-up job, but those other guys...well, perhaps they need some college-level refresher courses.)

In the deeveedee player:
Still haven't gotten all through Star Trek: Voyager--Season Two or Jonny Quest--Season One, so they're still in there.  I picked up Bubba Ho-Tep a few days ago, and that'll get a spin in the player before the weekend's over.

In the VHS player:
The Tarzan special that played on TCM last night.  Pretty decent.  Of course the focus was on the Weissmuller/MGM Tarzan flicks, but I'd've liked to see and hear more about the RKO pictures and earlier and later versions of the character.

What I'm reading:
A wonderful, gigantic book called Keep Watching the Skies! by Bill Warren.  Unfortunately, the book hasn't been updated, and much of the information in the book has been either added to, or been proven erroneous.  It's not Mr. Warren's fault; it's just that new information about the production of some of these movies (like Teenagers from Outer Space, courtesy of Scarlet Street) has come to light.  I'm sure Bill Warren would've loved to do updates for this reprint, but for whatever reason, it didn't happen.  Still, it's a great read, and a heck of an achievement.

What I'm drinking right now:
Cranberry juice.  Mmmmmmmm.

DR Jane,

I'm not too sure if I know "sweet beets"... I was referring to the regular red beets we were talking about, but the ones -- there not all like that, as we know -- that taste sweet. The "good" ones should taste sweet, be soft and have no "wooden" parts!. I never bothered with beets when in the States; they are sold boiled here.
Is it the way they are sold over there?
And, yes, one has to be careful with the juice which stains!
I like my beets with oil and vinegar and salt. Some add onions - raw -- but I don't care about onions -- raw or cooked --  and some parsley.....and i had to let YOU know all about that! There!

Hey? Where's DR Danise????

After corrections:
It's Laura's diet Coke that got me confused!
But, hey, that way, people do notice my comments!

DR Tomovoz mentions "vineger" and I instantly recall my favorite Australian soap opera, The Women of Cell Block H.  The lead butch woman prisoner (whose name, I think, was Bea) used to refer to the prison guard as "Ol' Vineger Tit".

Amazing how the mind works (well, my mind, anyway.)

I know I sort of started it by asking... But beets are a pretty boring topic. We're probably the only site on the Internet in a deep discussion of beets.
We could make a game of it, I suppose...
What do you call a beet with a beard? ...A beetnik.
If a beet has led a really good life and becomes a saint... It's beeatified.
If you can't stop eating beets...It's a habeet.
The handsomest beet movie star is...Warren Beety
An animated film about our favorite stuff is ...Roger Rabeet.
Speaking of rabbits, there's Peter Rabbeet, by Beetrix Potter. (oooh - a double!)
If the beets were to do MY FAIR LADY, the costumes would be designed by Cecil Beeton.
...and so on. I can think of hundreds, but I won't.
Or we could just forget the whole thing!

Tarzan and the Trappers (Gordon Scott; 1958)

Tarzan of the Apes (Elmo Lincoln; 1918)

Here is a funny thing that happened: I just went to my local Von's to buy light bulbs for my kitchen (four of the six had burned out in the last two days) - the kinds of bulbs I use are 4.50 at Von's as opposed to 11.00 at Gelson's.  So, I buy them and I'm walking to my car when I hear my name called out.  I look over and there, sitting on a bench in front of Von's, was our very own Juliana A. Hansen.  We actually had talked about having dinner tonight but I wasn't sure I'd be able to.  She'd just had a singing lesson and her mum was buying dinner at Chin Chin and they were going back to her singing teacher's to watch a DVD and eat.  Isn't it a small world after all?

I hate beets.

Tonight at STATE FAIR, after my bit....well it is so small it is not a bit it is more of a bi....I was watching a bit of the show with the light person.  Then I walked outside and the director and a few other board members were sitting there SMOKING.  I asked the director:

ME:  Vickie, why aren't you using a wash on the cyc?

VICKIE:  I am.

ME: No you're not.   There hasn't been any light on it for the past two days.

VICKIE:  There has to be.

ME:  Nope.

Seems that the Stage Manager thought the light person turned on the breaker for the backstage dimmer pack and the light person thought the stage manager did it, so nobody did.  We have been doing STATE FAIR with half the lights for two performances.

I flipped the breaker during the last scene change so the cyc would be lit for the last scene and the bows.  Everyone needed sun glasses!

We were at a 99-cent store and there were these reading glasses for $15.97. I felt like buying a pair so I could make a fuss when they rung up for more than a dollar, but my mom said it was a stupid idea.

Oh, I forgot that I had a double feature Bollywood...here is the other movie...TAAL (2001)...typical love triangle which is what 95 percent of Bollywood movies seem to be about...oh, and some people sing in it too.

I did discover a new favorite current Bollywood actor...Akshaye Khanna...he is the one with the dimple in his chin!  :D

I don't believe he has done Barnum!

Believe me, Michael, you would remember if he had done Barnum!

I don't mind raw beets, it's pickled beets that give me the willies.  However, the story of The Randy Vicar and the Pickled Beet is wonderful.

Indeed it is a wonderful story, but that Pickled Beet is a little tart!

Well, beets was not the worst subject ever discussed at HHW.  That honor would go to Survivor.  However, I was hoping that a few others here would have come up with some additional Special HHW Tony Awards.  That was the only reason that I did not individually honor each and every one of you!
