I'm going to start a new daily feature...
"YOU'D NEVER GUESS THEY WERE HUNGARIAN..."
Our first Magyar is the ulitmate British gentleman. [DRUM ROLL]
LESLIE HOWARD - (b. 4/3/1893, London, d. 6/1/1943),
"Born Lászlo Steiner to Hungarian parents, Lilian and Frank Steiner, in London. Frank worked as a stockbroker. Leslie's younger years were spent in Vienna. After school, Leslie worked as a bank clerk until the outbreak of World War I. In 1917, diagnosed as shell shocked, he was advised to take up acting as therapy. In a few years, his name was known on the stages of London and New York. He became known as the perfect Englishman, slim, tall, intellectual and sensitive, a part that he would play in many movies."
In the CD player, a fresh delivery from Amazon. com. Four "The Best of ..." compilations:And of course taste - Caterina V. Hot Stuff baby.

Eclecticism rules, is all I can say!
Here in Indiana (and I thought JASON wrote Jewish Acres Theatre - until I looked again Amish Acres....) we have a tape delay as well, and so our show will not start until 9 pm Eastern time, but it will be 8 pm here....we are on Chicago time right now. It's so Hungarian!
Is there any controversy over the name "Amish Acres Dinner Theatre"? I did a double-take when I first read it.Think of it as an upgrade.
Speaking of the Amish (Mennonites, in Ontario), in "Betrayed," on The Producers CD, when Max sees someone else's life flashing before him he says, "I'm not a hillbilly. I grew up in the Bronx." But in the Toronto production, it's, "I'm not Amish. I grew up in the Bronx." It couldn't be a regional thing, since Canadians would understand "hillbilly" as much as "Amish." So why the change?
Can you believe that Jeff Goldblum is doing THE MUSIC MAN here in Pittsburgh this summer?!?!?!?!?Uh...no. :-\
We could also call it Martin Mull Lookalike Weekend (try to find a picture of TD and you'll see what I mean).
I saw Jim doing BARNUM :)
...The Producers on Wednesday (gosh, I LOVE that show!!!) ...
I also saw Jim (and Glenn Close) doing Barnum. Tell me it wasn't 24 years ago.
The Producers made me fall in love with musical theatre again.
CD: Richard Harris - A Tramp Shining (a delightful new acquisition)
Well this is just too much! No secret is safe with you people is it! ;)
The guy who works in the cube behind me is eating licorice...and he is very noisy..chewing with his mouth open...all I can hear is the smacking of gums...if it doesn't stop soon I am going to commit a crime...
...I seem to be a bit grumpy...maybe I need more coffee!
Yes, I will add my name to the list of those who watched Mr. Dale do Barnum!
CD: Richard Harris - A Tramp Shining (a delightful new acquisition)
Uh-oh... I feel a song coming on...
"I don't think that I can take it!
'Cause it took so long to bake it!
And I'll never have that recipe again!
Oh, no!
O-Oh, nooooooooooooo-oooooooooooooooooooo!!!"
DR Panni, do you get to nominate in all categories or only in the writing categories? I have some suggestions if you have all categories open to you.
Thanks for the info.
OK, another question for all DRs out there who are fans of the Toho Studios monster releases:
My favorite has always been RODAN. I see that there is a full frame (I guess it was full frame in its original release), English-dubbed release on Sony. Does anyone have it? How is its quality? The dubbing doesn't bother me since that's the way I saw it and loved it as a kid.
DR PANNI do you want me to post your pic again today in case not everyone saw it?
BTW DRGEORGE there is no such thing as a 12 inch single...they may tell you that, but don't believe it.
From a reputable source:
Odors that increase blood flow to the penis: lavender, licorice, pumpkin pie.
The guy who works in the cube behind me is eating licorice...and he is very noisy..chewing with his mouth open...all I can hear is the smacking of gums...if it doesn't stop soon I am going to commit a crime...
...I seem to be a bit grumpy...maybe I need more coffee! LOL!
Oh, okay, Amelia....I mean Anna.
I had to remove myself to the tarnation of a windowless room because the window washers were heading to my level.
You could have just put some clothes on, Dan.
You could have just put some clothes on, Dan.
Or not. ::)
...DR Jason your CD should be arriving any day now!
WOW. Took forever to get into the Reply mode. Okay, I'll try posting a phone pic I just tool of the guest house in which I live. If it makes us go W-I-D-E, I'll delete...
I never saw a purple house
And thought I'd never see one
But does it mean that I'm a louse
'Cuz I'd rather see than be one?
Ah yes, George, I think I have that video!
That is a very cute house Panni...and Abie is a cutie too!
OK - Time to start packing up... -sort of a Brigadoon reference...
"Jeannie's packing up
Jeannie's moving out..."
-Oh, and when I did the show in high school, of course, the alternate lyric to that song was a bit "adult"...
"Jose's packing up
Jose's _______ out..."
:o
YES! I must start packing!
-OH!!! And during the chase, can you figure out what we sang instead of "Harry Beaton..." ?!?!?!? :-X
When comping vocals, I have been known to use different syllables from different takes - not often, but I've done it. NOW it's quite easy. THEN, almost impossible (you had to cut the actual tape). I'm sorry, and I know I wasn't there, but she does not have to sound like she does on the CD.
Thank you, MBarnum. Yes, the house is cute and TINY. I really like the people who own "The Big House" and I adore the neighborhood. But I don't know how much longer I can take the TINY space without going MAD... MAD, I tell you! I'm an almost obsessively neat person - and it's impossible to be neat in a place that has no room to put anything. I tidy up and half an hour later it looks like a hurricane hit. Plus, it's downright dangerous, man! Late last night I was hurrying to my desk, deep in thought, tripped on something (cute Abie's squeek toy, I think), lost my balance and fell against the desk, catching myself on my laptop. Not a good idea.
HOWEVER, don't get me wrong, I'm grateful to have a nice little place with sweet people as landlords. So we shall see what the future brings. CUE ORGAN.
I remember when AA did STATE FAIR
...and the tiniest bathroom in all of Oregon!!!
BEST PRODUCER: Mark Bakalor for "BABY..."
Am I missing something? Is Mr. Bakalor a father?!?!
Not sure what the melodic intent was above, but the one that went through my head was to "Rose's Turn" (Momma's lettin' go, Momma's doin' fine....).
As for what you sing instaed of "Harry Beaton"....was it something dirty??? Or did you substitute "Henry Higgins"?
Well, I'm single and..............
Yes, I will add my name to the list of those who watched Mr. Dale do Barnum!
Btu, TCB - - I have NEVER done BARNUM.
DVD...Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde, a TV play with Jack Palance...the best Jekyll & Hyde I've ever seen.
So, you say!
DRJOSE - I think Alex and/or Dane VanParis were kids in that production as well.
Thank you for my Tony award for Best Book.
I think I'm going MAD sooner than expected. I got my mail (nothing from JR yet!) and as I was carrying it in I heard music playing from the packages. I assumed it was another one of those trick Emmy tapes (like the singing Joan of Arcadia). But now I've opened all the packages - the final FRIENDS episodes, "24"; ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT...and none of them is a musical package. Was I hallucinating that my mail was playing upbeat tunes?... Possibly.
It will help.
TCB I also thought your HHW Tony Awards were clever...even though I didn't get one either. :'(
How about some of our own Tony Awards?
Best Book: BK for ?The Triplets of Kritzerville?
Best Producer: Mark Bakalor for ?Baby?
Best Solo Performance: Danise for ?Alone in the Big Apple?
Best Supporting Roles (Tie): elmore3003 and Jane for ?The Phone Calls?
Best Musical (wedding): Noel and Joy in ?I Do, I Do.?
Best Revival: Ron as ?RLP?
........okay, maybe these are lame, but it was something different for Tony Weekend. ::) ::)
Talk about using different syllables from different takes (as bk did earlier).... Take a look at this from USA Today:So the song will be Conway - but "it's only make believe". Maybe he's never been this far before. C'est Si Bon!
Cochran's latest includes spirit of Twitty
Country singer Anita Cochran's new single features a ghostly surprise — the voice of the late Conway Twitty. But (I Want to Hear) A Cheatin' Song isn't a song Twitty ever sang. Cochran wrote it two years ago. Twitty died in 1993.
Cochran assembled the five-line vocal track from samples of 1980s Twitty records. None was longer than three words; some were shorter than one.
"He sang the word 'song' a bunch of times, but we couldn't find it in the right pitch," Cochran says. "So we took the word 'wrong,' took the 'wr' off it and put on 's' to build the word 'song.'"
Twitty's widow, Dee Henry Jenkins, says, "We had recorded things digitally, and I knew what miracles could take place, but this was a whole different thing. I think Conway would have thought it was a great idea."
. . .and you may have noticed, TONY (td) didn't even get a TONY award from the fair TCB; but, that's alright. . .Ben gave me a weekend.
Sort of topic of the day.
I ordered my copy of Michael Crawford does Barnum the other day. Barnum has a "thing" for masked men too it seems.
I'm not judgemental. After all I am quite fond of watching it on video! - Crawford doing Barnum that is.
Special Tony Award: Dale in "Barnum"
Floop sounds so appealing - but only after I take out all the ingredients except for the cheese.Sounds like Jack Nicholson in FIVE EASY PIECES.
Jane, I'm with you on the pickled beets.
Pickled Beets are delicious Panni...I don't know how anyone cannot like them!!
I love pickled beets. They are great with Cherry Coke.
DR Jane, yep Allen is my favorite brother...although I don't think he knows that! LOL! But he is a good guy, and yes his youngest son is in Iraq, which keeps us all on pins and needles!
VHS: Surfside 6, Hawaiian Eye, and in a few moments 77 Sunset Strip and Cheyenne all taped off of Goodlife Network.
Barnum has a "thing" for masked men too it seems.
But the best part is how the beet juice turns the ranch dressing pink.
Okay, okay..........
Special Tony Award: Dale in "Barnum"
I don't think I have seen this much action in one day! Whew, I am plum tuckered out! LOL!
I did discover a new favorite current Bollywood actor...Akshaye Khanna...he is the one with the dimple in his chin! :D
I don't believe he has done Barnum!
td,
Do you like Un-masked beets?
... and I don't mean... beasts!
Pepperoni? Ew!!! Floop is cucumbers, pickled beets, little baby corns, cheese, ranch dressing, and chow mein noodles. But this particular batch is sans chow mein noodles because we don't have any.
" raw or coked!?!?! "Dr Jason.... you work out too hard!! ;)
Francois...do you need an intervention? Is there something you have to tell us?
Oh. Well then I'll have to make another batch. No batch for me!
Never liked beets Panni. Neither did my dad. He didn't eat them until senility set in! My mother and sister like them. I don't like the "earthy" taste and I don't like anything pickled - vinegar! Ugh!
Well, he and I have a few things in common: I have a dimple, cleft actually, in my chin, AND I'VE NEVER DONE BARNUM!
Song cue:
"There is a sucker
Born ev'ry minute."
Song cue:
"There is a sucker
Born ev'ry minute."
Or we could just forget the whole thing!
Today's media check:
In the VHS player:
The Tarzan special that played on TCM last night. Pretty decent. Of course the focus was on the Weissmuller/MGM Tarzan flicks, but I'd've liked to see and hear more about the RKO pictures and earlier and later versions of the character.
Or continue beeting a dead horse.;D ;D
Oh, I forgot that I had a double feature Bollywood...here is the other movie...TAAL (2001)...typical love triangle which is what 95 percent of Bollywood movies seem to be about...oh, and some people sing in it too.
I did discover a new favorite current Bollywood actor...Akshaye Khanna...he is the one with the dimple in his chin! :D
I don't believe he has done Barnum!
I don't mind raw beets, it's pickled beets that give me the willies. However, the story of The Randy Vicar and the Pickled Beet is wonderful.
