Title: AMPLIFICATION

Well, you've read the notes, the notes were amplified, and now it is time for you to post until the amplified cows come home.

BK, I TOTALLY agree with you about the problem of amplification in theater today.  A local theater company has their own fairly small theater (only about 180 seats) and anytime they do musicals, the sound is just too loud for the space...a few times, the sound was even a bit distorted because of the volume.

:P is what I say.

Last night's performance of "The Hound of the Baskervilles (http://www.olytheater.com/shows/currentproduction.htm)" was the best so far...for just about everyone involved.  Pug (who's running lights) said that she make a couple of mistakes, but I didn't notice any, and I'm sure that no one in the audience did, either.  I think that we've all finally hit our collective strides. :D

The Broadway version of Hairspray brings back memories.

It was actually the first time I met Mr. Bruce Kimmel in the flesh. It was during the intermission that I went up to introduce myself. We were a few rows apart and a section over.

Now I never told anyone this, but this I was going to do this:

"Excuse me, but weren't you in The First Nudie Musical?"

and if BK just said "Yes"

I was going to say, "Mr. NATHAN such a pleasure to meet you."

Meeting Mr. Kimmel had its perks too.

We went backstage after the show courtsey of DR Arnold Brockman's son, Craig. Were we chatted with  Kerry Butler (The original Penny). Harvey Fierstein came by and I reminded that we were in a movie together. "Doctor Jeckyl & MS. Hyde".

And if you imagaine him with his deep voice going AHHHHHHHHHHHHH. That was his opinion of the movie.

He signed my Playbill. Do celebrities always walk around with "Sharpies" just in case they are asked for an autograph?

Good morning, all! Last night I slept rather well. I was exhausted and I turned off the lights around 10:30. I was dreaming something about Goodspeed and the Drama Book Shop when the alarm went off.

Today I am seeing a new musical, THE BLUE FLOWER, with Mr Bruce Pomahac. I will meet him at 12:30 at Angus McIndoe's, and I'm sure we will have a fun time. This morning, I have to write out violin parts for "The Cherry Tree Carol" and "Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree" and I think all of my prelim work for tomorrow's rehearsal is finished. I'll finish the numbers when I return from the show with Bruce.

Tonight, I have to call Kim Criswell, who's in from London for a few days. She called me on Friday night and left a message and I know that when I speak to Miss Kimmy, I need a good hour free because we do have a good time on the phone. Following that I have another trip to midtown to meet the Appalachian cast at an Irish bar on 50th and Broadway around 8:30. It's a long day! I'll tape tonight's ONCE UPON A TIME.

More coffee!

Post by: Ben on October 30, 2011, 06:06:25 AM
Since it's Sunday we won't be having our usual oatmeal. I make scrambled eggs on Sunday and I buy a scone from Bread Alone at the Union Square Green Market and we have eggs, a scone (each have half) a piece of fruit (strawberries or a pear or something else, depending on what's in the apartment) and coffee and tea. We listen to music and enjoy our Sunday morning.

Then it's off to Brooklyn Heights for Cherpumple.

DR Michael S - At most Broadway stage doors, one of the stage door "managers" usually hands out Sharpies to the actors as they leave the theatre. It just makes it easier for them once they get outside to greet their fans and start signing Playbills, posters, CDs, records, underwear, arms, boobs, butts, etc. ;)

It's clearing out/sorting out day. Specifically, trying to sort out my books which are in a complete shambles. Trouble is my shelves are all different heights so instead of grouping book categories together I tend to sort them according to how high they are. Which is fine until I try to find anything. I tend to keep too many books as well, even though I have many which I've not looked at in years.

Tomorrow is Halloween.  My workplace is having a Halloween barbecue on our building's second floor patio.  They'll be cooking hot dogs and hamburgers (and vegan versions of same).  Potato salad, chips, a cookie and drink will also be part of the meal.

It's the first one we've had in ten years (last year, it was not held for some reason) for which I was not asked to provide potato salad.  They decided to go with CostCo potato salad.  I'm not at all offended as I'm not the only one who made potato salad (I always made 10 pounds of it...and all it got me was a free lunch:  A $7.50 meal ticket in exchange for about $15 worth of potato salad).

The exam is a nine-hour single-day computer-based test composed of eight 44-question sets (352 multiple-choice questions in total). Each section is one hour long. The test taker is permitted 45 minutes, in total for the whole day, for the purpose of breaks that can only be taken between sections.

Has anyone else seen this commercial for AT&T 4G network?

This guy come around the corner in his office and finds his co-workers eating tacos outside of Bill's office and he thinks he wasn't invited.  He then turns his head to one of the other people there and says, "You invited Eric, I thought Eric gave you the creeps?"

Then, of course, his phone (with apparently bad service) rings and he gets the invite to the party.

That sounds exactly like something stupid that I would have done - foot in mouth!

I am back from THE BLUE FLOWER, which is an experiment in film and live theatre in which neither wins many points. It has an excellent cast, but it's poor Brecht - at one point there's very literal qute from "Mack the Knife," making me wonder if the Weill Foundation is aware of this, but it's like watching a lot of skilled theatre professionals masturbate and make much ado about nothing. The story, about a "famous artist" (1899-1955), seems to also be a history of Europe from Mayerling to WW 2, but the music all sounds like it was written this morning on a country western fix, with lots of slide guitar, power ballads, a couple of beautiful ensembles, and a lot of unintelligible lyrics. The 8-piece band was quite good and some of the arrangements very interesting.

The problem is a story that jumps around in time about four Germans whom one never has an emotional investment with. Too much is narrated, too much is on film - I was amazed at a lot of synchronization between band, actors and film , but at times the film is more involving than the staging and it gets in the way of the staging. I wanted to like it, and I was very moved by the last couple of scenes, but the pretentious "bug" cabaret in Act Two, after an equally ridiculous Dada cabaret scene in Act One, made we want to leave immediately. The first act ended on a beautiful lament, but I didn't give a single damn about the plight of the character singing it.

I kept waiting for someone to ask, "how did you like our Brecht parody?"

And now I'm in rehearsal, and we are stumbling-through (on purpose) Act One.

How many performances are there for THE BOYS?

Just five: Friday, two on Saturday, two on Sunday.

...and then I fly to Los Angeles on Monday morning, and start rehearsals with bk at LACC Monday evening. (Whew!)

How long will you be in L.A.?

And speaking of "stumbling along", a certain Tony Award-winning actress - soon to make her Web debut in "Outside the Box" - will be dropping by rehearsal later. :)

Melody Hollis won a Tony award?

I watched "Captain America: The First Avenger" on Blu ray disc yesterday, and I thought it was super great fun!  Chris Evans is a terrific "Cap" and I think Joe Johnston and crew really captured the character's comic book vibe without being cartoonish.  I look forward to next summer's "The Avengers".

I take it he's playing John Steed. I hope that this is better than the one with Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurmon and Sean Connery

Is Christian playing Holmes?

Yes he is...and the train porter and Miss Cecille Stapleton and her "brother," Mr. Stapleton, as well as Mr. and Mrs. Barrymore. :)

Ditto. Too damn loud. I think the worst for me was Starlight Express. But that was bad because I could hear the music at any decibel level.

Yeah, but did you like it?  ;D

I can't remember what touring company it was that just about knocked me out of my chair.  It was either RAGTIME or ANYTHING GOES.  On Broadway, JEKYLL AND HYDE practically kncked the fillings out of my teeth.

Tonight's second feature and the main attraction is "The Woman on the Beach" from Jean Renoir. Moody film noir. Am enjoying it thoroughly, but whenever I see Joan Bennett outside of "Dark Shadows" I always wonder why she's wearing Hedy Lamar's old hair. Thanks, Cole Porter, for screwing up my head in so many wonderful ways.

I don't know, but I don't think so! Mostly pretentious twaddle. One of the posters on Allthatchat said it was great and pushed the envelope. Only if the envelope is marked "Go directly to jail, do not pass Go, do not collect $200."
