And the word of the day is: THANATOPSIS!
Thanks to MR BK for the Hairspray report.
And I will be looking forward to the Blue Flower report from DR ELMORE.
Today is the Annual Meeting of the Putnam County Playhouse where I will once again lose the Upstage Award to an undeserving performer.
Today we are going to a birthday party and the host has decided to make a Cherpumple.

Huzzah! Take a picture. And listen for the "thud" when it lands on your plate.
Today I am seeing a new musical, THE BLUE FLOWER, with Mr Bruce Pomahac. I will meet him at 12:30 at Angus McIndoe's, and I'm sure we will have a fun time. This morning, I have to write out violin parts for "The Cherry Tree Carol" and "Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree" and I think all of my prelim work for tomorrow's rehearsal is finished. I'll finish the numbers when I return from the show with Bruce.
Tonight, I have to call Kim Criswell, who's in from London for a few days. She called me on Friday night and left a message and I know that when I speak to Miss Kimmy, I need a good hour free because we do have a good time on the phone. Following that I have another trip to midtown to meet the Appalachian cast at an Irish bar on 50th and Broadway around 8:30. It's a long day! I'll tape tonight's ONCE UPON A TIME.
More coffee!
He signed my Playbill. Do celebrities always walk around with "Sharpies" just in case they are asked for an autograph?
I haven't, but I want to. I hear you can't see anything from it because the sides are so high.
I've been watching a documentary filmed in 3D of the Hoover Dam and the Hoover Dam Bypass bridge. What an amazing bridge!. Anyone driven over it?
Last night's performance of "The Hound of the Baskervilles (http://www.olytheater.com/shows/currentproduction.htm)" was the best so far...for just about everyone involved. Pug (who's running lights) said that she make a couple of mistakes, but I didn't notice any, and I'm sure that no one in the audience did, either. I think that we've all finally hit our collective strides. :D

And an early Happy Halloween!
I watched "Captain America: The First Avenger" on Blu ray disc yesterday, and I thought it was super great fun! Chris Evans is a terrific "Cap" and I think Joe Johnston and crew really captured the character's comic book vibe without being cartoonish. I look forward to next summer's "The Avengers".

I've been to Las Vegas numerous times and have yet to see the Hoover Dam. I would like to see it.

Tomorrow is Halloween. My workplace is having a Halloween barbecue on our building's second floor patio. They'll be cooking hot dogs and hamburgers (and vegan versions of same). Potato salad, chips, a cookie and drink will also be part of the meal.
It's the first one we've had in ten years (last year, it was not held for some reason) for which I was not asked to provide potato salad. They decided to go with CostCo potato salad. I'm not at all offended as I'm not the only one who made potato salad (I always made 10 pounds of it...and all it got me was a free lunch: A $7.50 meal ticket in exchange for about $15 worth of potato salad).

Deception Pass, north of Seattle, is one of those bridges that I wish had higher sides to keep me from seeing over the edge.

So you can see the dam.
And now I'm in rehearsal, and we are stumbling-through (on purpose) Act One.

How many performances are there for THE BOYS?
Just five: Friday, two on Saturday, two on Sunday.
...and then I fly to Los Angeles on Monday morning, and start rehearsals with bk at LACC Monday evening. (Whew!)
And speaking of "stumbling along", a certain Tony Award-winning actress - soon to make her Web debut in "Outside the Box" - will be dropping by rehearsal later. :)

I take it he's playing John Steed. I hope that this is better than the one with Ralph Fiennes, Uma Thurmon and Sean Connery

Is Christian playing Holmes?
BK, I TOTALLY agree with you about the problem of amplification in theater today. A local theater company has their own fairly small theater (only about 180 seats) and anytime they do musicals, the sound is just too loud for the space...a few times, the sound was even a bit distorted because of the volume.
:P is what I say.
I am back from THE BLUE FLOWER, which is an experiment in film and live theatre in which neither wins many points. It has an excellent cast, but it's poor Brecht - at one point there's very literal qute from "Mack the Knife," making me wonder if the Weill Foundation is aware of this, but it's like watching a lot of skilled theatre professionals masturbate and make much ado about nothing. The story, about a "famous artist" (1899-1955), seems to also be a history of Europe from Mayerling to WW 2, but the music all sounds like it was written this morning on a country western fix, with lots of slide guitar, power ballads, a couple of beautiful ensembles, and a lot of unintelligible lyrics. The 8-piece band was quite good and some of the arrangements very interesting.Yeah, but did you like it? ;D
The problem is a story that jumps around in time about four Germans whom one never has an emotional investment with. Too much is narrated, too much is on film - I was amazed at a lot of synchronization between band, actors and film , but at times the film is more involving than the staging and it gets in the way of the staging. I wanted to like it, and I was very moved by the last couple of scenes, but the pretentious "bug" cabaret in Act Two, after an equally ridiculous Dada cabaret scene in Act One, made we want to leave immediately. The first act ended on a beautiful lament, but I didn't give a single damn about the plight of the character singing it.
I kept waiting for someone to ask, "how did you like our Brecht parody?"

Ditto. Too damn loud. I think the worst for me was Starlight Express. But that was bad because I could hear the music at any decibel level.
Ragtime wasn't too loud for me. I saw it in the very last row and could understand every word just fine.BK, I TOTALLY agree with you about the problem of amplification in theater today. I can't remember what touring company it was that just about knocked me out of my chair. It was either RAGTIME or ANYTHING GOES. On Broadway, JEKYLL AND HYDE practically kncked the fillings out of my teeth.
"Jesus Christ, the Apple Tree"
there are too few hours in the dayAmen.

DR Ginny, do you like PAN AM? I think I've only missed one episode and I'm about to give up on it. I just don't care enough about the characters or something. I keep waiting for it to take off but it just doesn't seem to be able to get off the ground...
