Good morning, all! 5:30 came way too early to make me happy, but I am bathed and dressed and ready for my second cup of coffee. I need t be put of here early to get the newly copied opening sequence from the show copied, collated, and ready for rehearsal. Deb Lyons has asked me for a copy of the closer, "Christmas Time's A-Comin," in its performance key of D, not the lead sheet I prepared in F, so I'd like to copy that this morning as well. I need everything ready by 10AM, so I'm shortly off to work.
DR George, good news about the modem!

DR vixmom, I'm glad you made it back in one piece.

DR Jose, how are ticket sales going for the BFS shows?

BK, fantastic news about the show! "Here On Earth" is my favorite song from the show, too!

More coffee!

Been so busy these last few days, but I feel like nothing's getting done - just lots of things with steps left to complete them.

I'll have to wait until the weekend to catch up, so if I've missed any occasions, i'm really sorry about that.

Thursday morning greetings!  After 2 days of running around, I get to stay home all day today and prepare a nice family dinner for Richard and our guests - Rob and Mary Linda.  She arrived in Cincinnati to stay this past weekend and we're looking forward to catching up with her.  Richard and Rob have some car and insurance business to deal with and she and I have to go to my favorite consignment shop/Vera Bradley enabler retailer to look for some furniture for their apartment.  Steak and baked potatoes for dinner!

Oh, JR, some MOD movies are available:

HER HUSBAND'S AFFAIRS (1947) Charles Lederer and Ben Hecht of His Girl Friday fame offer up the wisecracks in this tale of a hapless hubby ad-man (Franchot Tone) whose quick-thinking bride (Ball) must constantly come to his rescue.
MISS GRANT TAKES RICHMOND (1949) William Holden lights up the screen alongside Lucy, long before his famous guest spot on I Love Lucy. A bookie (Holden) hires a trainee secretary (Ball) to manage his phony real estate office front, only to have her accidentally maneuver him and his criminal cronies into developing low-income housing.
THE FULLER BRUSH GIRL (1950) Scatterbrained saleswoman Sally Elliot (Ball) tries her hand at selling the famed Fuller brushes, but when one of her clients is murdered all sign point to her as the culprit. As the law closes in, it's up to her and her equally addled fiancee (Eddie Albert) to crack the case.
THE MAGIC CARPET (1951) Lucy's screen swan song (but only for the moment!) as she said goodbye to her Columbia contract and hello to TV superstardom, found her sandals deep in an Arabian adventure. Wildly cast against type, Lucy plays the sultry villainess Narah, who helps steal the Caliph's throne from infant Ramoth alongside her brother and his cohort, Grand Vizier Boreg (Raymond Burr).

The BD has almost an hour of recently discovered footage that was excised from the final version of the film and there's a most amusing cameo by someone who would later become a rather well known television star, and who, I believe, may even be a close personal acquaintance of BK's.

Kritzerland at the Gardenia 15 was amazing! Every song was a winner, and Bruce was in very fine voice. This show was particularly humorous, obviously since Bruce mostly writes comedies, so there was lots and lots of laughter. During dinner, Mark said to me, "I think that's Corkey Hale and the man who wrote 'Houndog'." (Mark had fun later on his computer looking up all the other gazillions of hits that man wrote.) Then he said, "And I think that's the person who designs the covers of Bruce's CDs." I don't know how Mark recognizes these people. I mean I can understand how he would know their names, but how does he know their faces? And he does this everywhere we go...really odd. Anyway, it was great hearing several songs from "The Brain" again since we haven't seen that show for a while, and it's so chock full of great songs. Despite having to read the lyrics, Jason acted his part very well, and was really funny. The Dancing Dildos were a huge hit, and "Chinese Food in Bed" was the perfect song to follow it. Bruce even sounded a little bit like he was tearing up at the end...I'm assuming that song is autobiographical in some regard because he seemed particularly emotional for that one.  I can understand Bruce's comments about "Burning Bush" being done outside of the show, but it still got huge laughs. Introducing the song was a bit tricky because Bruce decided he couldn't say "stunt cock" at the restaurant. I don't know why - it was okay to say "dildo" several times, but "stunt cock" was somehow against FCC rules. If Cindy Williams had been there, she would have been happy to say it for him, I'm sure. "I Want to Eat Your Face" also got really big laughs. Mark was laughing so hard, he was sobbing. And once again, poor Melody got the wordiest song with "Sing-A-Long". And this was the wordiest of all the wordy songs that Bruce has ever made her sing. I don't know how she learned all those lyrics and could sing them so fast - she is an amazing talent. I was sitting in front, and I could even read the words, but I could never keep up and sing that fast...nor could anyone else. It was a great way to end the show. I look forward to the Christmas show next month.

I'm torn, I tell you, torn.   No one loves Kaper's "Mutiny on the Bounty" more than I do.  No one.  But also that year (1962) were two other scores I love:  "To Kill A Mockingbird" and "Taras Bulba"...each a masterwork for composers Elmer Bernstein and Franz Waxman, respectively.

I think either "Bounty" or "Mockingbird" should have taken that Oscar.

I am listening to the FSM MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY, which is decidedly better than bossa nova versions of All I Ask of You.

With no disrespect to anyone who has ever produced a soundtrack album, the FSM "Mutiny on the Bounty" is the most spectacularly produced soundtrack EVER.   What makes it more remarkable is that there are three score presentations on it....the one that graces the released film, the one that was written (and is in many ways very different, but in the same mold) for the original cut that was altered, with re-takes ordered, etc., and then the one re-recorded for the MGM score album.

I'm looking forward to Mutiny on the Bounty - and have read the forums, who are making it seem like it's a disaster.  I posted that if they'd used the same transfer as the DVD that it would not be good, since the DVD was VERY soft verging on being out of focus, but the few screencaps I've seen lead me to believe this is sharp and therefore at least redone in some way.

I just heard a telephonic voice mail message from Mike Stoller who said he was "bowled over" by the show and the material - amazing to hear that coming from him.  My first big laugh of the evening, talking-wise, was in the opening patter and not in my commentary but off the cuff - in saying that a lot of folks don't even know I write songs, I said that there were people in the audience who'd had some pretty unbelievable hits and that my only hit was Dancing Dildos.

Yes, we did run out after the show (we always do because I have to be in the office at 6:30 the next morning).  I usually say goodnight to Bruce before leaving, but he was occupied and I also wanted to say hello to Steve Yudson (one of the dancing dildos) whom I hadn't seen in perhaps 15 years.

As for the show itself, a splendid time was had by all.  I paid my respects to the people I knew (Adryan Russ is always so kind and welcoming) or had met before.  Janet and I had a marvelous time.  Interestingly enough, there were only a few songs last night that I don't think I already had a recording of, as I had some of the some of the earlier work from a little CD called "The Music of Bruce Kimmel."  I just looked it up on Amazon and I'm amazed -- there' only 1 copy for sale and it's going for $71.99!  Mine is signed by Bruce (he scribbled, "My God!  You have one of these!" and no, it's not for sale.

Bruce was very self-effacing because the room was lousy with songwriters.  Well I gotta tell ya, Bruce has written some great stuff and my only disappointment last night was that I didn't hear all of the songs I'd hoped for (I have a soft spot in my heart for a song called "3 Acts.")

Anyway, the show was some of the best fun you can have with your clothes on, and my wife and I are looking forward to the Christmas show in December.

I visited the active Blu-ray.com forum...and was not surprised in the least at everyone -- without seeing it at all -- condemning it as badly done.  What a farce.  And screen caps....sorry, but you cannot judge how a film looks by screen caps alone.  They are always a bit fuzzy/soft, IMO.

There's a lot of anal 'tude at that forum.

Especially the screencaps at DVD Beaver - his are the worst and never resemble in the least what a transfer will look like - and yet, despite everyone saying that, they all use those caps as "evidence" that the transfer is a bust - it may well be but I'm not judging until I see it.

The BD has almost an hour of recently discovered footage that was excised from the final version of the film and there's a most amusing cameo by someone who would later become a rather well known television star, and who, I believe, may even be a close personal acquaintance of BK's.

That sounds interesting.

Especially the screencaps at DVD Beaver - his are the worst and never resemble in the least what a transfer will look like - and yet, despite everyone saying that, they all use those caps as "evidence" that the transfer is a bust - it may well be but I'm not judging until I see it.

You'll have accurate screencaps to go by soon.  ;)

I am glad to see (hear) that someone else knows Bruce's 3 Acts which I listed in an earlier post. I recommend a listen to all.

I also received an advance copy of the Brando MUTINY ON THE BOUNTY yesterday.  Don't believe everything you read is all I can say.  More later.

Does this release have the prologue that I have read about where it takes place years after the events and richard Hayden's character recounts the tale in flashback?

Good morning, all! 5:30 came way too early to make me happy, but I am bathed and dressed and ready for my second cup of coffee. I need t be put of here early to get the newly copied opening sequence from the show copied, collated, and ready for rehearsal. Deb Lyons has asked me for a copy of the closer, "Christmas Time's A-Comin," in its performance key of D, not the lead sheet I prepared in F, so I'd like to copy that this morning as well. I need everything ready by 10AM, so I'm shortly off to work.

You mean life ain't like the movies where you just tell the orchestra, "You Are My Lucky Star" in D and they play it?

I wish!

It's been one long day, and I'm ready for a nap. The morning was spent blocking and running the first half of the show. During the lunch break, we had a production meeting on concerns, questions, and things we needed to address. After lunch we worked on the band, how they get to their instruments,  the logistics of who plays what, and where and when. After that, we ran the music for the opening, the Cherry Tree Carol, The New Year Carol, and a couple of others. Then, DJ arrived with a new song to be added before Mary Joy Linn gives birth.

When Bryan had his teeth pulled Craig kindly fetched for him all day.  Craig was exhausted from running up & down the stairs so many times-glad I didn't have to do it.

When Craig had his pulled (I had insisted he do it over a school break instead of in San Francisco)he got sick during the night & was glad I had put the phone next to him so he could call us.  I'm sure he had a reaction to the pain meds.

Although I reserve the books i want way in advance.  There are some popular authors that i do not read (like danielle steel or james paterson).  You can reserve those well in advance and still not be first.

Re Funny Girl, funnily the Ahmanson called me last week and said that if they couldn't license the overture from the OBC that they'd want me to record it for their radio spots.  And frankly, even from that conversation it didn't sound like there was much energy for this thing.  I think maybe someone got off their medication and realized just who they'd hired to direct and star - when you have a musical COMEDY, with a starring role for a major comedienne, then you'd better have a director who knows comedy (Bart Sher is a fine director - but even in his lovely South Pacific revival none of the comedy really worked at all, save for Danny Burstein, who was just doing his thing), and a star who is a first-class clown and, in the case of Funny Girl, more than a first-class singer.

I've had a rather annoying afternoon.  Having to adjust rehearsal scheds for next week - one of our cast members wrote down the wrong start date ages ago and booked a reading that happens next weekend, so I have to now work around that.  Another cast member can't be there Monday night, and then is out of town from Thursday to Sunday.  Another cast member can't be there the ENTIRE Thanksgiving week - which means he's gone for seven days and then goes right into our one and only tech rehearsal, which is a little nutty - thankfully, he's singing songs he's done in various Gardenia shows, so he knows them at least, but it makes the three run-throughs that week absolutely hellacious.  We sent out an group e-mail explaining this is not like the Gardenia shows - two rehearsals and flying by the seat of our pants - this is a fully staged professional production which we hope to have other theaters see in hopes of moving it.  This thing is scaring the hell out of me - I'm sure once we get into it I'll feel more at ease but I sure don't feel at ease right now.

Then, I'm driving to the mail place.  I leave my house, turn left on the street to the east of me and am literally driving fifteen miles an hour because, you know, I've just made a slow turn and haven't even had much of a chance to put my foot on the gas pedal.  But, to my left, there's one of those disgusting Studio City entitled parents who have RUINED this neighborhood beyond belief and she shoots me this look and gives a slow down gesture.  This happens a lot in this neighborhood and I'd just had it.  I slammed on my brakes, rolled down my window and said, "WHAT?"  She said, "Slow down, there are children in this neighborhood and the speed limit is twenty-five miles an hour."  I got a little louder than usual and said, "No, incorrect, the speed limit in this neighborhood is thirty-five miles an hour and I was going fifteen so I don't understand your problem, lady.  I've lived here a hell of a lot longer than you, I'm a parent, I love children, and your parenting is a lot scarier than my driving well under the speed limit."  She just gave me an entitled look and I drove off before doing what I knew I was about to do - get out of my car and have a real conversation.

That's really cool!

Then I had to make the LACC gals CDRs, which I'll drive over to the school in the morning.  Then the Time Machine backup has literally not been off my desktop for more than ten minutes without it doing another backup.  Something is clearly wrong.  It should do one an hour, but Apple won't or can't figure it out and says as long as it's not getting an error message that it's doing its job.  Sorry, its job is not to jam up this computer every ten minutes with these endless backups.  And the backups are taking forever because it's backing up WAY too much stuff - it's only supposed to backup the new stuff, not the whole damn enchilada - that it's supposed to do once an evening.  I've about had it with this thing.  And because it's doing what it's doing it has nuked all the older backups and that does not make me comfortable at all.  This is a 500 gig backup drive yet my backups only now go back two or three weeks because of the way in which it's constantly backing up everything on the computer every ten damn minutes.

I started to watch a motion picture, but I just get so irritated at this stuff that I can't concentrate and being overtired does not help.

And then every three minutes there's a new spambot registration here - I get hundreds now every week.

Then I saw the test page for Filichia on Friday - hated everything about it except for a fun header at the top of the page - I again had to get louder than I like because I could not get the designer to understand why I hated it even though I was being very clear.

My son woke up a little bit ago. He asked for some ibuprofen, saying it didn't hurt too bad. After a few minutes went by, he asked for a pain pill. (The pharmacist said he could take both.) Then he went back to bed.

When I had mine out, they did it in two surgeries. The second surgery, I had a crawling baby and a toddler to care for. I wasn't able to take any "good" pain meds.

Good Evening!

The invited dress went very well. Things really fell into place, and the show had a nice groove to it.  It's also as short as I kept telling people it was. -Especially since most of the ballet music ended up getting cut.

We have a brief notes/fixes call tomorrow afternoon, and then first paying audience tomorrow night. I'm mainly looking forward to not have another 14-hour this week.  I've already had four of them in a row.

And now I'm waiting for a friend from NYC who gave a recital here tonight. We'll be catching up over an adult beverage. Or two. ;)

There's a virus in the air today, JMK. I found a copy of "Betty Buckley 1967" in  dollar bin and it has a bossa nova version of "C'est Magnifique" on it.

Did the ballet music get cut because the choreographer couldn't work fast enough?

TOD:

Oh of course, silly me....Akshay Kumar....he is one the the top actors in Hindi films, and he collects old movie posters. I'd love to lunch with him and have a chat. Maybe he would invite me over to see his collection.

Does he even speak English (stupid question)?

Mikey just wants to stare; I doubt he'd say anything but giggle like a 10 year-old girl.

Giggling is a universal language.

What Bernstein LP is it?

Elmer Bernstein "A Man and His Movies" (though it's not only "his" movies).  Mainstream.  Odd that they didn't release that when they did A Patch of Blue, etc.

That tune's a usual suspect when you have as many bossa albums as I do.  :)  I even have a bossa "La Vie en Rose."  More than one, actually.  ;)

I watched tonight's "Grey's Anatomy" and I'm now watching (and have been trying to record onto my DVD burner) Monday's "The Sing-Off."  I say "trying" to record onto my DVD burner because I keep forgetting that I'm recording it and I start to fast-forward before the commercial starts.  So, I've given up on recording it while I watch it.  I'll set it to record when I go to bed.
