Well, you've read the notes, the notes were harried, and now it is time for you to post until the harried cows come home.

Public Broadcasting Service recently launched on satellite TV in the UK. A newspaper report states:

PBS CEO Paula Kerger wants to correct a misconception about American television and wants to share another perspective on the United States separate from Hollywood. Which is why, 42 years after PBS was founded, the broadcaster is finally coming to the UK, with a new channel that she hopes will "give people in the UK a sense of how news is reported in the United States" and "through the investigative journalism, a real sense of some of the issues in the States".

I've only just found out that it's now launched so I'll be interested to have a look at it.

I saw PUSS IN BOOTS yesterday.

I was the only person in the theater.

I really enjoyed it. I think it is in the top 10 of the best animated features I have ever seen.

I wonder if I wasn't there would they still have run the feature?

Good morning, all!

I have to catch up on all of the posts for the past week so I am au courant. since I've nothing new to report, I'll post all of my old news for the past week.

On Monday, we flew to Hiltn Head: a 6:30 flght that was booked slid. The idiot clerk at bagcheck assigned tw pieces of luggage belonging to a soldier to my reservation, so I could not check my bag. Once she confessed to the manager her crime, she was sent off to attempt to rectify her idiocy and see if she could get the two pieces of luggage successfully rerouted t wherever the sldier was going. The manager at first started yelling at me until DJ and I let him know where the problem lie. The big problem was at security, since the bag contained everything you cannot take on board for the flight:  large bottles of mouthwash and shampoor, razor blades, scissors. Oy!

The security guard confiscated the shampoo and mouthwash and let me keep the razor andscissors. When we boarded the plane, because it was packed, I had to check the bag anyway, but at least it did end in Savannah with me. The Charlestn airport is huge, and when we arrived LATE I had to run like hell to Gate E11, or something like that, to make the connecting flight. My two companions foolshly went to the food court and, as a result, boarded the plane late. But, because of a heating problem, we sat on the plane for an hour while maintenance tinkered before we were asked to get off the plane. An hour later I had the warmest flight EVER to Savannah and arrived very sweaty. After that the drive to Hilton Head was a breeze.

I am quite ambivalent about Hilton Head Island, which has a great climate and some beautiful lcations, but it is like a theme park: everything built in ersatz "plantation" style, thngs are poles apart, so it wasn't advisable to walk the couple of miles from the housing to the theatre, especially after dark since there are no street lamps. The beach was glorious, the seafood was wonderful, and I would have liked to see more of the residential areas, but the main commercial area, and the guarded community where we stayed were like going to Shangri-La or Stepford or Salem's Lot. Because we were there off season, we fifteen New Yorkers, divided into three glorious and roomy houses, were - I suspect - the only residents in that community most of the week.

There was a wonderful game reserve, but I don't think there were any historical sites like a real 19th century plantation, or slave quarters, or anything. Frm the hotels - the world's largest Marriot maybe? - it's clearly a vacation-retirement attraction.

When we gt to Hilton Head, we checked into our lodging: the actors in one, the ladies in one, and the producer, director, stage manager and I in the largest, Then we headed to the huge Piggly Wiggly ("Save Big With the Pig!") for supplies. We also scheduled a big party for that night. Then we went to the theatre for several reasons: DJ to speak to the costumer and set designer, me to see if Icould find a computer to use since the one I was told would bw in our residence was not in the residence, and then forDJ and me to adition a pack of local kids for the two children's roles, Duncan and Mary Alice.

I did get to check in from a computer in the theatre offices, but the director made me feel that I was not welcome to do so again.

So, we saw around 15 children, and the first boy to sing for us - the kids had the music for "How Far Is It To Bethlehem?" in advance - was Jarod Valvo, who had played Young Tommy for the Hilton Head Arts Center, the theatre we were taking over, and he was great. His top was indefinite, so I had him sing it again and we went on to the next boy, who looked more Appalachian-depression but who couldn' t sing it. The girls were asked to sing "Jingle Bells," and the two wth the best pitch were a rambunctious 9 year-old Broderick, who looked and behaved like a young Scout Finch in TO KILL A MOCKINGBIRD and a very pretty little girl whose name I forget. I kept Jarod behind to have him sing us some scales and vocalized him up to a G, so I knew he could play the part; the top note for "How Far Is It To Bethlehem" was an E, then we lowered it a step for the autoharp tuning.

After the auditions, everyone met at our residence and we had a great party, ending around midnight. Our Della, Julie Foldesi, was not scheduled to arrive until Tuesday, and our leading actor, David Lutken, just drove in from being on a long tour. End of Day One.

Here's a photo of our Broderick on her 9th birthday.

I will post the last of my production photos. I'm sure I will have more to terrify all of the DRs before this is over.

This one is of the great Deb Lyons as the matriarch Curleen Ballard, with her daughters Della and the spinster Dovey (Megan Loomis). Around 10 years ago in Wooster Ohio, I saw a young lady in a production of THE RED MILL who was so wonderful that I tld her to send me a photo and resume. Ten years later, Megan and I did a show.

Deb's costume went through three different dresses; I don't think this one lasted beyond the dress rehearsal.

Damned post office! I picked up my mail for the past week and half of it is damp and going into the garbage: there was a leak last week and my mail, sitting on the floor, in a non-watertight basket got soaked. To add insult to injury, my mail, which was to be held until today, was delivered yesterday because my primary carrier, who seems to be the only one informed, was off. The assholes running the Planetarium Station are fools. This is the third time in the past two years that mail has been delivered while I was away, and half the time my requests for the mail to be held never get to the carrier.

Color me pissed this morning.

Make sure you get a cover with straps vs a slide bar.  Mine slides out all the time.  I like the back-light on my Nook Color & that I can check out books from the library.  My issue with the Nook is it is too sensitive to movement & often turns pages when I don't want it too.  I expect the page that was missing recently would be missing in all of the eBooks.

I'm curious what issues others have with their readers.  Keith's iPad is terrific only it is too big for me & I'm sure would give too much light at night keeping him from sleeping.

So, on Tuesday, Nov 8, we began costume fittings, tech work and a publicity photo. I met Jarod at 4PM to teach him his numbers, and Broderick joined us at 5 to work with us for an hour. It was kind of like this:
ME: Let's look at the new year carol
BRODERICK: Eewww, what's that purple thing you're eating?
JAROD: It's a blueberry bagle my dad brought me
BRODERICK: Why isn't it called a pupleberry bagle?
ME: Sigh . . .

By Thursday's dress, Jarod knew his lines and hers. Rob McCaffrey, who played Arlie, the childlike son of Mamie, participated in all of the kid's numbers so he wasa fantastic help in getting them through the dress and first performance.

Wednesday was more tech and more work for me with the kids when they arrived. Jarod's parents are home schooling him and his sister Rachel and the kid is brilliant. We had him most of the day. Broderick was free after 4 PM. Jarod, Nroderick, and I spent time - around 25 minutes - before call playing crazy eights and Go Fish with his father and John Dowbiggin of the stage crew. An hour before every pewrformance, the cast would assemble onstage and run numbers, tune their instruments and warm up. I insisted that Broderick and Jarod be there as well."You're a part of this ensemble and this is an ensemble show, so you'll get your butts out there and relate," I yelled at them several times. I really adored them both.

Thursday afternoon we did a couple of run throughs and played what we called a "preview" performance to an audience of around 100 that night. It was abit shaky, but overall, quite good. The producer videotaped it and took photos which I have to look at and post. The audience response was really good, and the next day several people called or emailed the theatre to tell them how much they liked it. Friends of DJ's, the McKenzies, came to me after the Thursday performance raving about the music. Their son is an MD in Manhattan and DJ's neighbor. They came back again on Sunday. I gave them my comps. They also took programs to pass out among thir friends. After the show, we had an opening night party at our residence.

On Friday, we had a quiet day. Several went to Savannah to see Johnny Mercer's grave and the Mercer House. They lunched at Paula Deen's. At 6:30, we met the cast, and made a few changes. The show played to an audience of less than 100, but we got standing ovations from several at the end.

Again, on the way out, I heard people raving about it. Most of our audience was retired people living in Hilton Head, and several asked if this was going to be aholiday tradition.

After the show, David Lutken moved into our housing. The director of THE DROWSY CHAPERONE, which began rehearsals today, arrived, told David he was occupying "his room," and told him to get out. David is a very gentle man, unlike me, who would have told the director, a pissy queen named Casey, what to do with himself, his dog and the horse they rode in on. The guys all disliked the intruder, who should have complained to the theatre and not to David, for being an total ass and for cramping their fun. To add insult to injury, the jerk didn't bother to come to see our show. I suspect he was in his room trying on new frocks to impress his cast.

So, we all packed David's many instruments and luggage and moved hm to our house. After that, we partied at the ladies' residence and watched the wonderful Irish movie ONCE.

On Saturday, we played a matinee to an audience of around 50 or less, who also loved the show and reacted very favorably. Our crisis on Saturday morning was that Broderick was taken to hospital for what was believed to be appendicitis. Meg our great stage manager contactyed Jarod's family and Rachel, Jarod's younger sister, too over the role. By matinee, Jarod and her well reheared. After the matnee we learned that Broderick had surgery andwas doing well. Our prducer bought her two funny get well cards, and after the show, we met at our residence to play Celebrity and Psychiatrist, and the cast signed the cards and several posters of the show t hand out to investors.

The evening performance played really well, and we had again an audience of less than 100. The theatre seats 350, but a bigger crowd would have been nice.

It airs Tuesday nights at 10.  They have been promoting the episode because Henner, who is a consultant on the show, also plays Poppy Montgomery's aunt (sister of her mother).

On Sunday, I spent the morning packing and went to the theatre with Meg around noon. At 1PM, the cast met on stage and Broderick came by with her dad to see us and say goodbye. The performance was really really good and we got it on video. After the show, we all went out to a beach bar at the Marriot Hotel and got looped. Meg got a really great photo of the sunset over the ocean.

I walked on the beach with some of the cast to our housing and it was a couple of miles, but really beautiful. An hour or so later we all met at a tapas place on Main Street. I had crab cakes, shrimp and lobster wonton, and a glorious banana bread pudding with fresh strawberries. At the Marriot I'd had a burger and margarita, so I stayed with ginger ale at the other joint. The next morning at 9AM, we all departed andmet forbreakfast as a last goodbye. The cast and producer headed off to Charleston to fly back and Julie, Meg, DJ and I drove to Savannah. We dropeed DJ at the airport since he was taking an earlier flight, then the three of us went to Old Savannah, which is glorious; beautiful, real,  the complete opposite of the pseudo architecture of most of Hilton Head, and we split up to tour around the city for two hours. I ended up at a great used book store, the Book Lady, found used copies of a hardcover complete plays of Joe Orton, a British translation I did not know of Anouilh's wonderful play MLLE COLOMBE, and a beautiful hardcover history of Harlequin. The people there were wonderful and we had a nice visit. Then, back to the airport and home.

That was my week!

DR Elmore - I'm so sorry to hear that you've been dealing with so much tsuris this morning back in Manhattan.  However, I'm glad to read and see that you had such a wonderful time in South Carolina, and that you were able make it to Old Savannah. I was there in 1993 for a conference and loved it. Next time, you should make it to Charleston. *Oh, and now that I think of it, Charleston Stage Company would be a good "home" for CHRISTMAS UP THE HOLLER.  -Especially since they're now back in the historic and newly renovated Dock Street Theatre.  Hmm...

And:

It is better to have loved a short than never to have loved a tall.

One of the first things I noticed about the old SUPERMAN TV series was how all the actors said "a tall" for "at all".

As did Frances - at least on This Is Your Life.

DR JMK did you see this SILENT footage from 1962 of Frances at the Miss DePauw University contest?  I wish I could download it and burn it to DVD.

JRand, I don't know how to burn it to a DVD (other than a DVD-ROM type and not a playable DVD), but you can at least download it at http://keepvid.com (no "www").  Then, you just need to find an FLV player to download and install on your computer.  If you search "flash video player" or "flv player," you can find many to download for free.  I've been saving flash videos for several years now. :D

I forgot to mention my Friday morning shopping trip to the Outlet Mall with Meg Friedman, our stage manager. Clark's shoes, which cost me around $125 here  were going for $60. I didn't buy anything but it was great to look. We found a great candy store where I bought her a chocolate malt for chauffering me around and a strawberry shake for myself (DEELISH!). I also bought salt water taffy and caramel popcorn. The owner who makes the candy and I had a serious discussion about popcorn balls.

DR Jane, i don't think Marilu Henner is playing a woman with a gift. So there are only handfuls of people with this condition in the world. however i could be wrong. I really have no idea. I just am assuming that it is a guest starring role not related to what she can do. And i'm guessing most people have no idea she can do these things. I had no idea until i saw her on The View last year.

My actress friend Jewell Lain called me today from a nursing home in North Hills, California. She had been in the hospital over the weekend as she fell and broke her leg last week. In addition to falling and breaking the leg, she lay on the ground for a full two days before anyone found her!

Needless to say, she is not a happy camper. Her dog, Bon Vivant, is at her little house/apt and someone is evidently checking on him each day and giving him food. My concern is that in a worst case scenerio of Jewell not being able to return home, what will happen to her dog. I have my friend Jerry Lee, who lives in Silverlake, getting the word out down there for someone who can keep the dog either for the short term or for the long term.

I worry that if something should happen to Jewell that the dog would end up at the pound, and being an old dog he might get put down. My understanding is that the pounds in Southern California are filled to capacity. Bon Vivant is such a wonderful, well behaved animal.

TOD:     And from "Into the Woods", we get a bunch of "saws":

No knot unties itself...

Sometimes the things you most wish for are not to be touched...

The harder to get, the better to have...

The difference between a cow and a bean is a bean can begin an adventure...

Slotted spoons don't hold much soup...

The prettier the flower, the farther from the path...

The closer to the family, the closer to the wine...

The mouth of a wolf's not the end of the world...

A servant is not just a dog, to a Prince....

Opportunity is not a lengthy visitor...

You may know what you need,  But to get what you want,  Better see that you keep what you have.

Sometimes the things you most wish for are not to be touched...

FROM YESTERDAY

RE: The TV Series UNFORGETTABLE

Marilu Henner is a consultant to the series.

Her guest star role is the lead character's aunt who is suffering from dementia. The character's mother died from complications of dementia.

Thank you since I didn't watch it.

It hasn't aired yet.  And Henner's story arc is not having her mother die...that's just background.

I am confused. Whose mother died from dementia? The lead character's mother has dementia but is not dead and appears on the show.

Hoping all the best for your friend.

I am thinking of buying a book reader.

If you have a

Kindle (Amazon)
Nook (Barnes and Noble)
IPad (Apple)
Are there others?

If you have one what are your opinions?

Make sure you get a cover with straps vs a slide bar.  Mine slides out all the time.  I like the back-light on my Nook Color & that I can check out books from the library.  My issue with the Nook is it is too sensitive to movement & often turns pages when I don't want it too.  I expect the page that was missing recently would be missing in all of the eBooks.

I'm curious what issues others have with their readers.  Keith's iPad is terrific only it is too big for me & I'm sure would give too much light at night keeping him from sleeping.

I bought several "cheap" mysteries from Amazon for my Kindle.  I couldn't believe how many typing, spelling and gramatical errors this one set of books contained.  I read them anyway.  I just pretended that I was grading 8th grade English assignments.

Almost a year after I read these stupid books, I got e-mails from Amazon telling me that the copies had been corrected, and I could download them for free.  Since I doubt I will ever want to read these books again, I didn't bother.

Met Steve for drinks and a meal. He wasn't in a good mood because the night before his 22 year old son had been attacked and beaten up by a gang of four youths who made off with his phone. His son ended up with a bad gash on his face and a broken finger. The police seemed fairly helpless as to what they could do.

How upsetting!  I'm sure it was good for Steve, bad mood & all, to get out with you.

Michael, I got a Kindle but only because it was free.  I had points with my debit card that were going to expire, so that's what I got.  I know someone who has an iPad with free applications for all the readers:  Kindle, Nook, individual publishers, etc.  You'd have much more flexibility with something like that, and there'd be a LOT more e-books available to you, than if you choose something proprietary like a Kindle or a Nook.  Just my 2¢.

The character played by Poppy Montgomery mother has dementia as does her Aunt played Marilu Henner. I believe the mother is only shown in flashbacks. I read somewhere over the weekend that the Mother had died.

I wanted to buy DR T - and got SHIP OF FOOLS, THE WILD ONE, MEMBER OF THE WEDDING, DR T, and GUESS WHO'S COMING TO DINNER.....so for about $12....I couldn't resist.

The Claudette Colbert CLEOPATRA 75th Anniversary Edition is $5.35.

I love SHIP OF FOOLS.  What a great film.

Funny you should mention that, as I got an advance copy of the new IT TAKES A THIEF Complete Series set, and I instantly went to an episode I remembered from my childhood featuring The 5th Dimension as guest stars, where the bad guys had Marilyn McCoo add three weird chords to the end of "One Less Bell" to set off an explosion.

Well, the latest is that they found the mother had posted on in internet site looking for a Sugar Daddy.  And less than two weeks before Sky disappeared, the mother inquired on what would be needed to send Sky to her parents in Russia.

But the police keep handling this mother with kid gloves.

I didn't remember. Thanks for telling me again.

According to WB Customer service doesn't know anything about it. I quoted them what the Grover Crisp, Executive VP of
Asset Management, Film Restoration & Digital Mastering at Sony Pictures. said about it. They told me to call back in a week. They put notes into my account

Crisp: Quite frankly, I still don’t know how it happened, except that somewhere in the manufacturing chain there was a mix-up and the wrong audio file was encoded.   An honest mistake, but one that is obviously embarrassing and for which we apologize.  The problem has been rectified now and as of last week all new discs manufactured have the correct 5.1 and anyone who wants a replacement can exchange it at the point of sale.   All sellers should be aware of this.

Just saw a promo for Mickey Rourke on Piers Morgan.

WHAT DID HE DO TO HIS FACE??

They showed pictures of him in his "prime" and then him chatting with the host.

Yikes!!!!!

I'm having fun on facebook chatting with my first boyfriend.  He remembers me as his first crush.  Is that sweet or what.  I didn't think he would remember me & Craig said who forgets something like that.

DR JMK

Did you post the other day that you got the 5.1 version of Lost Horizon? If you did, where did you originally buy it from--Amazom or WB Store?

I answered you then.  :)  Amazon.

On Amazon, they now have a message for Lost Horizon (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B005KR6O1C/ref=ox_ya_os_product):

Item Under Review
While this item is available from other marketplace sellers on this page, it is not currently offered by Amazon.com because customers have told us there may be something wrong with our inventory of the item, the way we are shipping it, or the way it's described here. (Thanks for the tip!)

We're working to fix the problem as quickly as possible.

I ordered mine from Amazon last month (at $4 less than what Warner is selling it for directly) and it's definitely in mono.  I should send it back.

And speaking of work, I am now officially retiring from the State effective 12/30/2011.

CONGRATULATIONS!!!!  Will your medical insurance continue as part of your retirement?

Oh yes, at $600.00 a month until I am approved for SSA-Disability

VIBES IT IS ALL ENOUGH UNTIL SSA KICKS IN!!!!

The lump sum that I will receive is more than enough to keep me comfortable until SSA Disability or otherwise starts.  Most of the lump sum will be rolled over and invested to give me a monthly stipend.  However, the amount that I plan to cash out, after paying income tax, will pay off any and all debts that I owe as well as paying my rent for the next year and all the utilities, plus food for Nicky (and maybe for me).

Thanks.

I just confirmed we're victims of credit card fraud.  Luckily it's an old MC number we don't use anymore, but I've spent the past half hour sorting it all out.  I must say I received exceptional customer service all around.

Busy day. Doctor's first thing and then work and then more work followed by work. I hope I get some work done.

You aren't going to work today?
I did work. And I went to work. Today was one of those days where those two things didn't overlap much. And that's a good thing.

Can somebody tell me why, when you order a vegetable dish at a Thai/Asian restaurant, they list everything in it but tofu and then they proceed to put more tofu in the dish than anything else? I don't need to eat grout. I don't need to grout anything either. Why would they give me grout cubes?

End of rant.

If it tastes like grout they aren't making it properly. ;D

If you ordered a vegetable dish it shouldn't have tofu unless you request it.  Are you sure you didn't order a vegie & tofu dish by mistake?

Nope just re-read the takeout menu: Pa Nang Puk, Mixed vegetables sauteed in spicy Pa Nany curry sauce and coconut milk.

Also when is pineapple a vegetable?

The flavor of everything is good. I just loathe the texture of tofu.

Got "Michael Clayton" on the background and am reminded all over again how great Tilda Swinton was in this movie. Even when you know the twists of the plot, she is magnetizing.

Finally back from what was basically a stumble-through of the show.  The people who had to miss many rehearsals last week were in very rough shape and I found it pretty annoying.  One of them had absolutely not looked or listened to one note of music or looked at the blocking.  I had a blow-up with that person this morning, and I'm promised that it will be better tomorrow and that from here on in I will have full commitment to this stuff.

I think it will be a good show if everyone will only learn the material - everyone is ragged and still trying to remember stuff, despite everyone having this material for weeks now.  And I can't do any real directing until they not only know it but actually perform it so I can see what needs adjusting, if anything.  Reading through the commentary several things became apparent, most to do with a couple of very long stories that as of tomorrow will be much shorter and different.  I'm not quite sold on the show order yet, but that may change when the cast is up to speed and it has some pace.  There is one song that's driving me a bit batty - two, actually - one I might replace, and one I might simply cut.

Good Evening!

Well... Rehearsal ended over an hour ago... And I just now hopped on the bus back to Glendale. Apparently there were "ghost busses" on LA Metro's "NextBus" app.

*However, I did make the most of the delay by stopping into the House of Pies for a post-rehearsal slice. :)

Will they be including the pledge breaks?

;)

*Although, I read a report that there is now a PBS channel that is "All Pledge Drives, All the Time".
