Well, you've read the notes, you've ankhed for the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently trying to figure out what an ankh is.

And the word of the day is: PERNOCTATION!
-
A Very Happy Birthday to DR KevinH!! ;D
-
HAPPY BIRTHDAY DR KEVINH !!!

BK: Good to see that you are enjoying Bruno Cremor as Maigret. I think he's perfect in the role and the films are so well made - excellent period atmosphere. I've got most of the DVD box sets - box set 5 is one I still have to get. I didn't care for the Michael Gambon series and I've never seen the Jean Gabin films but would like to (I don't think any of the French DVDs have English subtitles?).

Morning all.
That is all.
-
Happy Kevin Day!
I hope all of Washington, DC is celebrating for you.

There is no $80 fee for the Kindle.
The mention of $80 in the David Pogue relates to the price of the cheapest Kindle. There is more than one model.
Here is the portion of the article mentioning $80
David Pogue NYT Nov. 13, 2011
This new Kindle is now so small, it fits in a pants pocket. But again, the news here is the price: $80.
Do you have any idea how astonishing that number is? The first Kindle, born four years ago this month, cost $400. This model weighs 40 percent less, occupies a third less space and stores seven times as many books — at 20 percent of the price.
At this rate, by next year, Amazon will pay you to buy a Kindle.
You can pay a little more for various perks. For example, the $80 model displays ads. Never while you’re reading — only on the “sleep” screen and in a strip across the bottom of the Home screen. Most are discount deals, which makes them a lot more palatable. But you can get this Kindle without the ads for $110.
If you sign up for Amazon Prime, which costs $79 a year and which originally got you free shipping of items bought through Amazon you get free access to a "lending library" maintained by Amazon which features books for the Kindle but Amazon Prime is not required to purchase a Kindle.
-
Happy Happy Birthday, DR Kevin!

Laura, go to bed!

I got my six hours of sleep, Ben. I'm up!

Good morning, all.

Happy, happy, KevinH!

A quote from Sondheim that ties in with what BK was saying yesterday and somewhat in his notes this morning:
" ... for every piece of thoughtful observation about other people's work, there was a piece of mean-spirited snottiness – some of which, I regret to say, made me laugh and wish I were young enough again to participate in those kinds of exchanges."
-
Happy Birthday KevinH!!

This is what I read and must have misunderstood. I thought you needed to pay this fee in order to download the books, mags etc. Thanks for the clarification.

Happy birthday, dear Dr Kevin!

Good morning, all! It's been another email morning: the cast of EILEEN, DEAREST ENEMY logistics, and social calls. I will spend some time this morning listening seriously to the Act Two tracks of EILEEN, and then I've got more ROBERTA work to tackle before next Monday.
I cannot locate my full scores for DEAREST ENEMY, so I must have shipped them to either the Library of Congress or Miami University in the past 6 years. Since I need a set to prepare the new score and parts, I asked R&H to make me a set. The originals have been sent to my friende Joseph, who's doing the engraving, so tomorrow I need to pick up the scores from him, photocopy them and return them to him. The logistics are now resolved to everyone's satisfaction.
I got a beautiful email from my beloved Rachel Kelly, my Irish soubrette on EILEEN, who's singing the role of Beatrice in Berlioz' opera BEATRICE ET BENEDICT for Sir Colin Davis, the UK's leading Berlioz conductor, and I had to wish her luck. I also heard from Steven LaBrie, who's back from singing Schaunard in LA BOHEME in Santa Barbara, and I'm happy that he feels it went well.
More coffee!

Here's our new release - if you want it, directly to paypal.com - payable to kritzerland at adelphia dot net, 19.98 plus 3.75 shipping (23.73):
ADDICTED TO COOL – HEFTI AND JONES
Kritzerland presents a new limited edition CD soundtrack – two great scores on one great CD:
SYNANON
Music Composed and Conducted by Neal Hefti
and
ENTER LAUGHING
Music Composed and Conducted by Quincy Jones
In 1965, director Richard Quine made a film about Synanon, a real-life drug rehabilitation center, called, not surprisingly, Synanon. The film starred Edmond O’Brien as Charles E. “Chuck” Dederich, founder of Synanon, and the denizens of Synanon were played by Alex Cord, Chuck Connors, Stella Stevens, Richard Conte, Richard Evans, and Eartha Kitt. Shot on location in Santa Monica at Synanon, the film is filled with the usual soul-searching, bad withdrawal, falling off the drug wagon, romantic entanglements, more bad withdrawal, really bad withdrawal, more soul-searching, and, of course, some more bad withdrawal – and music. Lots and lots of very cool music composed by the very cool Neal Hefti.
Hefti, who began in big band and jazz with Woody Herman and then Count Basie, wrote his first film score in 1964 for Richard Quine’s comedy, Sex and the Single Girl. It was classic Hefti right out of the gate and introduced a fresh, melodic, and, yes, cool voice into film scoring. He followed that with How To Murder Your Wife (released by Kritzerland), which was followed by Synanon. Some of his most famous work lay ahead – the following year he’d work on TV’s Batman, do brilliant scores for two Neil Simon comedy films, Barefoot In The Park and then his iconic music for The Odd Couple, whose theme was also used in the TV series based on the play and film. Hefti’s score for Synanon opens with a moody and evocative main title, and the rest of the score consists of variations on that main theme, along with some swingin’ ups, bluesy ballads, and even a couple of vocals – all in the unique Hefti style and loaded with his usual melodic invention. There was no one like him.
WELL, HELLO WORLD, COME IN AND ENTER LAUGHING
Enter Laughing began life as a semi-autobiographical novel by Carl Reiner, about a young man longing to break into show business. It was adapted for Broadway by playwright Joseph Stein and opened in 1963 to excellent reviews. In 1967, Enter Laughing was brought to the screen, this time written and directed by Reiner himself. The film version starred Reni Santoni, Janet Margolin, Jose Ferrer, Elaine May, Jack Gilford, Don Rickles, Shelly Winters, David Opatashu, and, repeating his stage role, Michael J. Pollard. Enter Laughing is a frequently hilarious movie filled with expert turns by expert actors, especially Ferrer and May, who are both brilliant in the film. Capturing all the fun and spirit of the movie was its score by the great Quincy Jones, another of the cool set of composers from the 1960s.
Jones, like Hefti, started out in big band and jazz as an arranger and composer. And, like Hefti, Jones wrote his first Hollywood film score in 1964, for Sidney Lumet’s The Pawnbroker. He instantly became a sought-after and very prolific film composer, scoring such 1960s films as Mirage, Walk, Don’t Run, The Deadly Affair, In The Heat Of The Night, In Cold Blood, Mackenna’s Gold, The Italian Job, Bob and Mary and Ted and Alice, Cactus Flower and many others, as well as his great theme for the TV series Ironside. The 70s were no less fruitful, producing such great scores as The Anderson Tapes, $, The Hot Rock, The New Centurions, The Getaway, Roots, and, in 1985, The Color Purple. Jones was a completely fresh voice in film scoring – he combined the best of all worlds – big band, jazz, and classic film scoring, into his own unique sound. While his score for Enter Laughing is on the more traditional side, it is infectiously tuneful, fresh as a daisy, and fits the film like a glove. It’s the kind of score no one really knows how to write anymore.
Both Synanon and Enter Laughing were originally released on Liberty Records and this is the first CD release for both. They are mastered from the original two-track album masters housed in the Capitol vaults – they were in pristine condition and both have that spectacular 1960s stereo sound.
This release is limited to 1000 copies only. The price is $19.98, plus shipping. Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.
CD will ship the third week of December – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early). To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

I've finished my notes on the first edit of Disc One, and I can move back over to ROBERTA for a while. This mess is a huge undertaking and I want to have it ready by next Monday.
My tasty lunch was a yummilicious caesar salad and scrambled eggs.
I forgot that tonight I have to see a show at The Lambs at 7:00.

So, Parade is over. Another personal achievement tallied and now it's on to the Holidays, Christmas programs, etc. Not sure I'll ever vist Parade again, not sure if I'll ever have the opportunity, but it is one show I'd never thought I would do. I was apprehensive at the undertaking because it was definitely a step out of my "Lloyd Webber" box, but I'm glad I did it and it was a fantastic success.
-
Had lunch with some of my former work colleagues. We discussed how the organisation was doing and concluded, of course, that we used to do a far better job than the current management :)

WARNING: This post contains graphic descriptions. Not for the faint of heart! (Well, not really that awful, but bad enough)
Today I am moving around in a somnambulic state. I had an absolutely horrible night, last night. While watching the football game last night, I started to notice the onset of shall we say digestive problems. Trust me when I say that this can be the worst problem imaginable for someone who is not able to walk, let alone run. By the time the game was over, I had started my journeys back and forth to the bathroom. These continued every half hour to hour for the entire night.
Sometime around three this morning, while sitting in the bathroom, I moved wrong (I guess) and managed to pinch off a nerve and / or pulled a muscle in my lower back. Somehow, I managed toe keep from screaming out loud, but the pain added yet another factor to my neverending night.
Somewhere, around 8 or 9 this morning the digestive symtoms disappeared, but the pinched nerve / pulled muscle pain continued. In order to get some sleep this morning, I had to take a muscle relaxer and eventually a pain pill. I am now up after three or four hours of solid sleep, but I feel very much like a Zombie.
End of Story!

Inspired by the release of Clint Eastwood's new film J. EDGAR, I decided to do a music video of my song, "J. Edgar Hoover".
"J. Edgar Hoover" is a song from my musical-comedy, HAIL ON THE CHIEF. Book and lyrics by me, music by my son, David Druxman, with additional music and lyrics by this guy named Bruce Kimmel, who also performs this vocal.
In the play, the song is sung by a character, Frank Hughes, a veteran, ultra-right wing Secret Service agent who misses the days when Hoover ran the FBI and much of everything else in Washington.
Enjoy!

Now back then, our one and only daily newspaper had no qualms about taking advetising money from porno theaters, so the Cameo's ad always showed up to the other theaters in town from the large first run Temple and Music Box to my neighborhood Proctor Theater. Every once in a while when I was checking all of the ads for the weekend, I would see that the Cameo was no longer showing VIXEN BOSOMS, but instead was showing Jacques Tati's M. HULOT'S HOLIDAY, or some other Tati title. I assumed it was just another porno title until I got to college. I never quite understand why they switched back and forth.

Enjoy!

Druxy, have you heard the very funny L.A. Theaterworks recording of J. EDGAR! with Kelsey Grammer?
No.

Why do so many theater compaies do OLIVER for their December "holiday" show. It isn't like it has a real cheery story. Nancy gets stabbed to death. Bill Sikes ends up haning. And little Master Twist gets kicked out of the orpanage for asking for "More, Sir."
Now granted, I have played Fagin in two productions, both at Christmas time, but I didn't pick the show.

I spy the birthday boy!

Has anyone ever seen Trans-Siberian Orchestra in concert? I like hearing some of their music, but I don't know if I would enjoy an entire concert.

We are off to IKEA for dinner and a little shopping - bye for now!
Swedish meatballs?
Yes, for Richard. I had fish and fabulous vegetable soup.

Back to Karine Vanasse, the French-Canadian actress I like from PAN AM. I didn't have time to look for this earlier. Her character Colette grew up in France during the Nazi occupation and she was required to learn this song. When the crew visits Germany, she sings this rather defiant version:
Deutschland uber Alles (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rmheo9bePH8)
While I was watching this episode, Richard was in the next room and even he picked up her attitude, just by hearing her.

Regarding the new version of On a Clear Day with Harry Connick, Jr: the word on the Broadway forums is not good! But since it's still in previews, I guess it's too soon to judge.

Probably because he doesn't have an opportunity to take his shirt (or pajama top) off.

I am back from the reading of NORTH ATLANTIC, a 1977 musical that does to Rodgers & Hammerstein what THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X did to 50s and 60s sci fi films. There were funny moments but it suffered from too little rehearsal time. I left as soon as it was over; I am definitely coming down with something, so I'm taking a big stiff drink and going to bed.
Night!
DR TCB, in the novel OLIVER TWIST, Nancy is brutally beaten to death. Same death in the film. She's only stabbed in the musical?
-
Hope it was a great day Kevin!
-
We have been without the internet all day, as well as the phone which still isn't working.

Sorry I will have to catch up tomorrow.
GOOD VIBES TO EVERYONE!!!

Has anyone ever seen Trans-Siberian Orchestra in concert? I like hearing some of their music, but I don't know if I would enjoy an entire concert.
Friends from church go every year. I think some of the members are from San Antonio, so they play here real close to Christmas. It's not my kind of music (electrified Percy Faith sans soul, to my ears), so I've never gone.

I came across a most interesting link from one of my Facebook friends. A link to a Youtube video running 41:24 (!) of a live peformance of the musical Lovely Ladies, Kind Gentlemen. If you are not familar with the show it is based on Teahouse of The August Moon that only ran 19 performances (Dec 26/70- Jan 9/71)
The video was taken on the final show.
The video has the following musical numbers from the show: One Side Of the World, This Time, Simple Word, Garden Guaracha, Call Me Back, Lovely Ladies Kind Gentlemen, then there was a scene that featured the great David Burns (who was tony nominated) that leads into the song: You've Broekn A FIne Woman's Hart and One More For the Last One. and the final 9 minutes of the show (including the bows)
The audience was laughing and enjoying what they were seeing.Kenneth Nelson (best known for The Boys In The Band) had a terrific voice. Kenneth does a curtain call speech about the last performance. He thanks everyone and makes a joke aout the musicians in the orchestra.
BK recorded SImple Words for Unsung Musicals III

When did BK record the song? And when was the show written/done?

The "other" Bruce has had a recording of this announced forever. Didn't David Burns die onstage out of town?
-
Yes, Mr. Burns passed during a performance of 70 Girls 70.
-
Back from as good a rehearsal as was possible, considering an actor wasn't there. Someone walked his track and the show went very well - I'm very close to locking my patter now. Tonight the lighting guy was supposed to start building cues but the board was wonky and he couldn't. Hopefully tomorrow night.

I was misremembering the show, evidently. :)

In even more "who knew" news, I was amazed to read in Sid Melton's obituary in Variety that his father was one of the screenwriters of the film version of GOLDEN BOY.

Good Evening!
I, too, am back from a good rehearsal. At least the parts of it where I wasn't in the dark. ;)

DR TCB - Sutton Foster has extended her stay with ANYTHING GOES through April 29, 2012.
*Stephanie Block has been filling in while Sutton has been filming a pilot the past couple of weeks. Sutton returns after Thanksgiving.

TOD:
Isabelle Adjani - One Deadly Summer
Leslie Caron - Fanny
Charles Boyer - Gaslight
Jacques Tati - M. Hulot’s Holiday

DR TCB - There used to be a movie theatre in Alexandria, Virginia, that would do the same thing. Actually, it was two small theaters. One would usually run a family-friendly movie, while the one next door - and sharing the same box office window - would show more adult fare. Needless to say, their newspaper ads and listings were always a bit "varied".
