Well, you've read the notes, the notes gave and had thanks, and now it is time for you to post until the giving cows come thankfully home.

I'm in the basement with my oatmeal and coffee.

We will have a guest in about 6 and a half hours.

The house is starting to rise which is indicative of a holiday because at 7am I'm usually the only one up and about.

TOD:

I'm sure I told this same story last year, but there is no Thanksgiving memory in my life that can top this one.  It's one of the stories in my memoir, so if you've read that or were around last year, you should be familiar with it.

 ;)

This is my Thanksgiving story, a tale that my family will never let
me forget.

I love Thanksgiving. I have very warm childhood memories of that
holiday. Every year, we would have a family gathering at our home. My
aunt, uncle and two cousins, as well as my half-brother Hersh and his
family were always there.

We’d sit around the table and, after everybody had stuffed themselves,
people would tell jokes. My uncle, Kenneth, was the #1 storyteller,
but on this particular year, I also decided to contribute to the
merriment…with disastrous results.

I think it was 1954. I would have been thirteen-years-old.
Without contemplating the consequences, I told this very funny
joke that I’d heard at school, and I told it very well.

Correction! I didn’t just tell it very well. I told it brilliantly. I had a
captive audience.

Then, I came to the punch line…which ended with the word “f**k”.

My mother, who’d had a few too many drinks in her, started laughing
hysterically. No matter what else you say about her, she was a wonderful
audience.

Unfortunately, everybody else at the table sat in a stunned silence. If
my mother hadn’t been laughing, you could have heard a pin drop.

You see, in 1954, a thirteen-year-old boy did not say
“f**k”...particularly in front of adults.

The first one to speak was my father. Pointing at me, he started
shouting at my mother, “You’re the one who encourages him! This is all
your doing!”

Within two minutes, all of our very embarrassed guests had excused
themselves and left our house.

I don’t recall if I was sent to my room or not, but I know I never
told another joke at Thanksgiving dinner.

 ;D

Have a Happy Thanksgiving everybody!

Good morning, all! I wish all the DRs a very happy Thanksgiving Day.

Last night I had three peculiar dreams, all of which I had remembered when I bathed, but one of which I have since forgotten. In the earlier dream, I was once again in rehearsals for the Appalachian show, but I remember nothing about it now. In the last dream before I decided Genug ist Genug, I dreamed that I was at Barnes and Noble, helping the manager pick out Christmas cards. She found one she liked and I took it to Sarah, the manager, who was supervising a new bagcheck for poles, since a stripper had left her pole behind. This prompted a lot of jokes about "I wonder if you've found a pole? I might have left it in the sex section. Or maybe in erotica."

I'm listening to the last Act of EILEEN; it sounds spectacular. Our juvenile tenor, Dean Power, is amazing. The boy's going to be a star with that top B-flat! After that, I will turn on the Macy's Parade for company while I work on ROBERTA edits.

Today, around 2:15PM, I will look for a bus to Skip's and Fred's. I am looking forward to seeing them. I haven't seen Skip since March, when the Packard Humanties Institute put us on hold. And a happy Thanksgiving to you, too, DWP!

Happy Thanksgiving from Washington National Airport !  It looks like a great day for flying.  It's sunny and in the 40's (or  maybe 50's by now).  The airport is more crowded than I thought it would be, since most people fly on the Wednesday of the Thanksgiving holiday.

My most memorable Thanksgiving moment is actually being in NYC. I was a little late for the start of the show but what do I hear the fitst thing?....

Guy Haines and Michele Nicastro singing BE A SANTA!

The oerfomers were a group of women "dancing" with Shopping Carts.

TOD - In 1977, when we were both still single my friend Becky and I spent the long Thanksgiving weekend in New York.  We saw 5 shows and watched the parade at Broadway & 52nd.  A mom from New Jersey wanted to adopt us for Thanksgiving dinner, but we already had reservations at Mamma Leone's.

One of my favorite lines on television......at first I thought it was a Thanksgiving party.....but I think now it was a wedding reception....from Cheers.

Woody runs into the kitchen and says:  "Does anyone know where I can find a plunger?"

Sam:  "No, is there trouble in the bathroom?"

Woody: "No, my Uncle Elmer left his wooden leg on the bus, and he wants to dance."

The last time I posted here I believe I mentioned all the crapola that's been going on. Ever since last spring it's been one thing after another. I think the only thing that HASN'T given me problems has been my toaster. Lots of trouble with my car. I'd been taking it to the dealer, who has been spectacularly unsuccessful at diagnosing it. It's now at an independent garage in Santa Monica, while I drive one of their loaners. This loaner could be euphemisticly described as "basic transportation." But it runs. The odometer reads 90,000 miles, but I think it's really 190,000--there just wasn't room for another digit. In any case, the owner of said garage is a Japanese man, who couldn't have been nicer about helping me. He even let me take the loaner almost a week early, because I was afraid of a breakdown. To Mr Kondo, my thanks.

Glad you found IT,  DR JANE.

Car repair vibes for DR JEANNE.

We didn't even get to see the Shar-Pei walk out in the Non-Sporting group....so I didn't pay much attention to the rest of the show.

DR TCB, re: your turkey question from yesterday.

There are butterball turkeys that are stuffed that are specifically meant to be cooked from frozen. They take about 6 hours in the oven. It is so much easier!

I only got to see the last 1 1/2 of the Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade. I will watch the first half later.  I was watching with my niece. And my sister likes to watch the broadway numbers with her. So we watched the 2nd half (it was all taped so it didn't matter).

She enjoyed the Smurf float. And Dora with the Fresh Beat Band (apparently Marina was not the real Marina).

I liked how American Idol Scotty was standing there instead of lip-synching. So i had to explain to her what that was! :)

It is so windy here the smoke from one of our two fires was pushed out of the fireplace into the house, repeatedly setting off a smoke alarm I have discovered is hard wired into the wiring (no battery).  Luckily we have magazines we can wave up next to it.   It is *really* stormy here.

Our Thanksgiving gathering wound down about half an hour ago and I'm exhausted.  The turkey was one of the best we've ever cooked and there's a LOT left over.  Everyone's side dishes were wonderful.  We had a small crowd - 8 for dinner, 10 for dessert when our dear niece/goddaughter Lauren stopped by with her new boyfriend.

Yes, DR TCB.  When I was a new bride and shopping for my first Thanksgiving, I went to the butcher shop that my mother-in-law had patronized for years.  Mr. Pence, the butcher, was talking to me about the different brands of frozen turkeys and I asked which one was as good as fresh.  He peered at me over his half-glasses and said, "Mrs. Palmer, there's nothing like a fresh turkey."  We've bought fresh ever since and just a few weeks ago Richard's honor guard performed the military rites at Mr. Pence's funeral.

We just got back from the train station. Our guest is on his way back to Manhattan. We will be back to Manhattan on Saturday.

We had a great meal and a wonderful dinner. It was quiet and relaxed and I'm pooped! I mucked up the green bean casserole which I've made for years. This year I was tired and didn't mix the soup and milk well and it also didn't bake long enough I think but it was OK and we'll have it next year and I'll remember what to do then.

Tomorrow is not really shopping, just a trip to the craft store for Anthony to get some things for ornaments and then a visit/dinner with our dear friend in Smithtown.

Then on Saturday it's back to the city for more food and fun and then on Monday it's only 3 more days at work. It's been a long and difficult year and I'm looking forward to the time off. December 1 through January 2nd. Not a day spent in the office but I will go to the office Holiday Party where I will be honored for 20 years of service to the Foundation Center with a large gift card. Maybe a new television is in our future, or two tickets to Minnesota in June for my nephew's graduation from high school. We shall see.

Happy weekend to all and to all a goodnight.

And as full as I am, when I opened the fridge to get out the whipped cream and I saw the bowl of turkey sitting there, I thought to myself, "Self, another slice of turkey would taste pretty good right now."

I have so far resisted the urge.

Thanksgiving Dinner was very nice. I had been thinking that we would be joining Kristy's parents, but it turned out that once we arrived at Kristy's sister's house, we stayed there. Her parents stayed in Arizona this year. In any case...

There were six of us around the table, well five of us sitting at the table and one in a crib. Myself, my brother, Jay, his wife, Kristy; Kristy's sister, Beth; Beth's husband, Nathan; and Beth and Nathan's adorable 8-month old baby girl, Olivia. -Olivia was in the crib, just in case anyone was wondering.

Also on the table: Turkey, gravy, dressing, sweet potato casserole, "smashed" potatoes, green bean casserole, rolls, pecan pie, and pumpkin pie. -And puréed butternut squash for Olivia.

It was a great meal.

Had a perfectly lovely and cozy Thanksgiving dinner with Melody and folks.  We've sort of adopted each other and I feel we're all family now.  I showed them Melody's second episode of Outside The Box, which they liked very much, and I gave them the hot off the press Melodyland CD, which they were over the moon about.  We had turkey, stuffing, green beans, asparagus, and there was mashed potatoes and sweet potatoes.  I had two helpings of turkey and stuffing (neither too large), one tiny little taste of sweet potatoes, and some green beans and asparagus.  And three small roles.  For dessert we had homemade pumpkin and apple pie - I had small slices of each.  I didn't jog (too chilly and too lazy) but I'm hoping I didn't eat so much that I did too much damage.

The sweet potatoes could have been something you might indulge in as they are just about one of the healthiest tubers out there....perfect for all sorts of regimens.

Of course, they'd have to be without the marshmallows or pecan (or other nut) toppings...

We had three kinds of homemade pie and one kind of homemade whipped cream.

I went to my sister's this afternoon before going to our parents' house and we watched a bit of the new Phantom of the Opera Blu-ray.  While I was there, my sister was getting a couple of pies ready.  She made a vegan pumpkin pie that was done, but she assembled a vegan peach pie that she was going to bake at our parents' house after the turkey was done and we started eating.  BUT my mom made a Chocolate Lush for dessert so that plus two pies was too much, so my sister didn't bake the peach pie.

What could be considered a memorable Thanksgiving moment happened tonight.  When we were cleaning up after eating dessert and we were ALL stuffed, my sister had put what was left of the pumpkin pie in a box with some other stuff and set it down on the ground.  We then played a game of Scrabble (I came in second!) and when we finally were getting ready to leave, my sister saw that my parents' cat had gotten in the box and sat on the pie!  There were paw prints in the pumpkin!  The pie had been covered with plastic wrap, but it wasn't completely covered, so no left-over vegan pumpkin pie...and I didn't even get a piece at all!

I just thought that that was pretty darned funny...even though it ruined a pie. :D

So Druxy, do you remember the joke?
