Well, you've read the notes, the notes were written at night and hopefully are open, and now it is time for you to post until the opening night cows come home.

And the word of the day is: SERRY!

~~~Vibes and Xylophones of All Kinds for BK and the Cast of LOST AND UNSUNG!!~~~
-
I have just been paid (by direct deposit) and finally I'm able to order The People in the Picture (http://www.kritzerland.com/peoplePicture.htm)! ;D
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Today is my last day for the year so I have much to do.
I've been working since 6am and it's time for a break to eat something.
Later!
-
BK,
Much leg breaking for the show!
-
break a leg with the show.
Can you post the final song list.
-
Good morning, all! I have an intense day today. Mercury landed in retrograde and completely messed up my existence yesterday! I have only myself to blame for a lot of it, but it does affect my music prep team, and that hurts me to no end. Over a month ago, before I became tied up with the Appalachian Christmas piece, I had spent a sday with my colleague Peter going through the ROBERTA full scores, attempting to assemble a reconstruction, bar count, and all things needed to assemble a budget. Act one was fine, but we were sloppy on Act Two, and going through Act Two yesterday, we added 500 bars of musicto the budget, which took the music prep work to an enormously high amount. Primarily for two reasons:
1. the music underscoring for ROBERTA is intentionally continuous, with song flowing in and out of it; this seems to be Kern's approach to MUSIC IN THE AIR and THE CAT AND THE FIDDLE - nonstop scoring
2. all the sections of underscorng with dialogue need new piano-vocal scores created with the dialogue in place; I didn't do this for EILEEN and it was hell for the singers, jumping back and forth between dialogue sheets and vocal books.
So, when the Man from Philadelphia got my email on the music prepbudget rise, he pulled the plug on all work on THE RED MILL until ROBERTA is under control and we know exactly where the budget will settle. I need to spend some time crunching numbers today to bring the budget down.
I also have a few neighborhood errands to run and an apartment to tidy. My friend Joseph Rubin is coming by at 6:45 to hear the 2nd disk of EILEEN, and this place is a mess.
Wednesday morning greetings! It's finally stopped raining here in SW Ohio and the sun is trying to shine 8)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Break-a-leg Vibes to BK, DR Jose, the cast and crew for tonight! ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do what they do in that bizarre new ad featuring (kind of) "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year"--just cut out nanoseconds here and there. ;)
-
In fact that ad really bothers me as it is so resolutely anti-musical, with bizarre little snippets shaved off here and there obviously to get the commercial running time down to 30 seconds.
-
The do the same thing the The Sound of Music on NBC.....letting the dialog scenes go on and on and cutting snippets out of the songs.....it's scary.
-
Broken leg vibes for MR BK and DR JOSE & Company this evening.
-
Break a leg to BK and DR Jose!~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Congrats to DRs Noel and Joy! Wow, Adelaide. What a perfect name for them!
-
I had breakfast today at Ed's Diner which is based on a '50s style American Diner. I had the "Straight Outa Bed" breakast which comprised bacon, sausage, fried egg, tomato, mushroom, hash brown and unlimited coffee and - needless to say - it was delicious.
-
I'm off to run some errands; I've trimmed about 500 measures from the ROBERTA budget, so we'll see if it passes muster.
-
~~~Vibes and Xylophones of All Kinds for BK and the Cast of LOST AND UNSUNG!!~~~
Many, many vibes.
-
Good morning and vibes to all.
Visited the opticians to sort out my broken glasses. To my surprise, they said the broken metal frame could be repaired and gave me the name of a frame repair company. I went onto their website, completed the on-line form and mailed it together with the standard payment of £22 ($35) which is a lot cheaper than having to buy a new frame or new lenses and frame. Until they are returned I will have to go around wearing my prescription sunglasses which, at this time of year, will at least make me look fashionably mysterious - or something.
-
Happy Wednesday, all and sundry.
Last day of November!
Where (oh! where?) has this year gone?
-
I've finished my errands. I took the 104 bus down Broadway and had a nice conversation with Rosalind Elias. I wonder if she's off to the matinee of FOLLIES or running errands before the show.
DR DOUG R - you may get asked for your autograph!
It's like miles of colon. But, seriously, does that mean we will have to wait for another recording to get "the complete recording"? The underscoring on these shows is generally wonderful. I love it in the new "Follies" recording, for a recent example.
-
I don't know how i didn't know this. But Staples/Bureau En Gros (what it is called here) is now able to sell Kindles in their actual store. They are $109. Need to see this. I just don't really understand the whole Canada/US thing. I know i would have to order books from .com and not .ca (that is fine cause i have a giftcard on .com). But i'm just not totally clear how many of amazon.com's kindle books can be "shipped" to canada. I know there are some restrictions.
-
I duly waited until 9 a.m. to see what Amazon.com "Lightning Deal" was being offered (and the hint was that it was a laptop of some kind).
It was a Samsung Chromebook.
All right, I thought. Nice price, too. I pressed the button and was forced to select a size (only one choice, but I still had to select it) and then I had to select a color (white or silver). I selected and noted that, after less than 50 seconds, 78% were sold. I pressed the button to buy...and was informed I was no. 178 on the wait list.
NUMBER 178 !!! (As is always the case in these situations, I will wait for eternity).
I wonder what number I'd have been if I hadn't been required to make two different "selections".
I hate the holiday e-shopping experience.
-
I'm up after a good night's beauty sleep.
-
I shall try to be jogging in about forty-five minutes.
-
Trying to heat up the jernt right now - it's sixty-five.
-
It looks like another pretty day out.
I think she might make a good Aunt Minnie AKA Madame Roberta: two scenes, one song "Yesterdays," and a death scene.
There will, sadly, probably be no other rcording of ROBERTA with all of it's underscoring. It's 3500 bars of music. EILEEN had only 2700, and THE RED MILL has nearly 3,000!
The cut I hated making the most was the Wardrobe Scene, in which Stephanie is dressed by the seamstresses for her appearance in the Finale as a Grand Duchess. It's a simple underscoring over a dialogue scene building to a triumphant Russian national anthem. Enough of the Act One numbers will show how things weave in and out of song and dialogue. One of my other concerns is simply how much dialogue I can commit th singers to record.
Based on her version of "One More Kiss" I would agree.
And in a very Hal Prince sort of move, I just booked my next gig:
I'll be covering the second half of the run of My Fair Lady (http://tickets.barksdalerichmond.org/single/psDetail.aspx?psn=271) for The Barksdale Theatre in Richmond, Virginia, from December 16-January 8. They're doing the version scored for two pianos. I had actually planned on being home for the holidays this year, so, it's a proverbial "perfect storm" - but in a good sense. *And I really don't think I've been back to Richmond since last Christmas.
-
And now I need to head out to get a bite to eat as well to see if the Trader Joe's up the street stocks those caffeinated Clif Bars.
Congrats to DR JOSE on his Holiday Gig close to home.
Things change faster on West 82nd Street than they do in Wonderland! ROBERTA is off the table for a 2012 recording, and my reconstruction of the Rodgers & Hart DEAREST ENEMY is going to be recorded in August 2012. ROBERTA will be recorded complete in 2013.
Now I can "officially" listen to it and not feel guilty. ;)
Congrats. Barksdale is a theater I would love to go to one time when i'm in Richmond. Trouble is, I'm never there when they're doing a show I want to see. They did a production of Sammy Cahn and Charles Strouse's "Bojangles," which would have been wonderful. When I was there last, it was "Joseph and the Amazing ..."
Oh, well.
I've done the four-mile jog, I've banked, I've picked up one package, I bought a couple of pairs of pants, and I'm now home until I leave at around four-thirty or so.
DR John G - I asked this in the relative wee hours last night: Which Ives disc were you listening to yesterday?
It's a new recording called "Four Sonatas" from Deutsche Grammaphon. Hilary Hahn on violin and Valentina Lisitsa on piano.
I haven't read the booklet yet but the notes on the library website say they are Sonatas Nos. 1-4. What I like are the way he takes a hymn of peace, like "What a Friend We Have in Jesus" or "Bringing in the Sheaves" and then brings in this modern agitation and thrumming to surround the melody, and then you get to the calm. Again, it's energizing and peaceful at the same time. I'm getting a lot of work done.
Page three!
¡Hola!
Good Afternoon!
I'm back from Target. I found those Energy Bar "chews" to keep me energized during the show, and I also had to buy some black dress socks - since, for some unknown reason, I only packed one pair for this trip. ???
That's a great recording, and Hahn and Lisitsa really treat the material with reverence as well as a sense of humor and fun - just like Ives would have wanted.
*If you do want to venture into more "thorny" Ives, check out Jeremy Denk's Ives' "Concord Sonata" disc from last year.
Oh, well.
Barksdale actually runs/oversees three space now: Historic Hanover Tavern, Barksdale at Willow Lawn (Shopping Center) and the historic Empire Theatre. I did She Loves Me and Violet for them at the Willow Lawn space years ago. I'm looking forward to My Fair Lady at the Empire Theatre - such a great space. -And it's been "featured" as a stand-in for Ford's Theatre a couple of times in a bunch of Abraham Lincoln movies.
Well, since I'm heading back East next Saturday, I will already be missing BK's annual spaghetti partay.
And since I will be in San Francisco next week, I will also be missing the Christmas installment of "Kritzerland at the Gardenia". Spoo!
Congratulations, DR Jose! Richard was just asking me what's next for you. Is this the gig that made you say "Wow!" last week?
Thank You, DR Ginny. Well... It was part of what made me say, "Wow!".
In the span of three days, I got offers for work that will basically keep me busy through July. And they're all projects I actually want to work on, and had thought of submitting myself for, but had heard that the personnel were already in place.
It looks like I'll be doing a concert version of Two Gentlemen of Verona at the end of January. Then come Spring, it looks like I will be the AMD for The Music Man back down at Arena Stage starring the lovely Kate Baldwin as Marian. -And in the meantime, I have my usual spring theatre conferences, as well as a workshop in a NYC too.
-
Life Lesson of the Day:
Never eat Cheetos when you are naked.
Now that needs to go on a t-shirt!
*Complete with "orange finger prints" on the side. ;)
DR elmore - Thank You. Alas, it means more time out of New York City for me, but work is work. And work is good. I just need to decide if I want to go ahead and start the hunt for a new apartment in NYC now or later. At this point, if everything lines up properly, I won't need a "full time" place to live in NYC until next summer.
In the span of three days, I got offers for work that will basically keep me busy through July. And they're all projects I actually want to work on, and had thought of submitting myself for, but had heard that the personnel were already in place.
It looks like I'll be doing a concert version of Two Gentlemen of Verona at the end of January. Then come Spring, it looks like I will be the AMD for The Music Man back down at Arena Stage starring the lovely Kate Baldwin as Marian. -And in the meantime, I have my usual spring theatre conferences, as well as a workshop in a NYC too.
To that, I also say "Wow!" and we're so there to see MUSIC MAN! And in our own "perfect storm," we also want to get to NYC to see Jim Parsons in HARVEY and they overlap. I think I'll start planning for a plane/train trip like we had several years ago!
Good news from DR Elmore, too - congratulations!
Does that mean you won't be working on LESTAT 2: THE REAWAKENING MUSICAL?
George, have you gone back to your old ways of going into work late, and then staying late?
-
Yesterday I worked and then I went and met with my financial adviser about rolling over my lump-sum retirement account. By the time I was finished, I was so exhausted that I wasn't sure I could drive home. However, I did make it home, but I was worn out.
-
Last night I watched BODY OF PROOF again. I liked it better than I did the first time, but still it tends to annoy me. The best part was the guest star, BK's friend, Gregory Harrison. Damn, he still looks damn good.
Hello, 65 Guests!
-
Hello, 65 Guests!
I guess I don't scare the Guests as much as some others do. Only two Guests left when I said "Hello."
-
Down to 61 Guests, but addition on FJL.
Hello, FJL!
-
Time to get these posts in gear.
-
Hello, TCB - but had you left while I caught up?
-
Are we on page 5 yet?
-
My financial adviser is also the adviser for my sister and her husband. I reiterated to him that nothing we discussed would be mentioned to my sister.
-
Good news DR ELMORE.....and for DR JOSE - the hits just keep coming!
-
Hello, TCB - but had you left while I caught up?
No, I was probably typing.
We are getting closer to Page Five.
I guess I will announce now that my friend Zachary will be in the Broadway debut of WIT early in 2012.
Here is the story:
The put a picture of Cynthia Nixon there instead of one of Zachary.....but I guess that is to be expected.
-
I had two Ask BK questions in the last week; and now I can't remember either one of them.
I'm glad you made it home safely!
I think he is very good...... looking. Seriously, he was mom's financial adviser and she thought he was pretty great. I find him very trustworthy; but I trusted Richard Nixon, so what do I know.
The majority of the lump-sum payment will be rolled over into an IRA, so it won't be taxed until I start to withdraw portions of it. The other part is what I am going to be living on until August.
Things change faster on West 82nd Street than they do in Wonderland! ROBERTA is off the table for a 2012 recording, and my reconstruction of the Rodgers & Hart DEAREST ENEMY is going to be recorded in August 2012. ROBERTA will be recorded complete in 2013.
Congrats, Larry!
I spent a lot of time figuring out how much of the money I would need. I have some huge bills that I have to pay off, plus I plan on paying my rent and car payments for the next ten months in advance.
Good one DR George. :D
I feel like I'm coming down with something. I home a good nights sleep and I'll feel better tomorrow.
I don't know how i didn't know this. But Staples/Bureau En Gros (what it is called here) is now able to sell Kindles in their actual store. They are $109. Need to see this. I just don't really understand the whole Canada/US thing. I know i would have to order books from .com and not .ca (that is fine cause i have a giftcard on .com). But i'm just not totally clear how many of amazon.com's kindle books can be "shipped" to canada. I know there are some restrictions.
Would there be restrictions on books that are sent on the internet? How could they do that?
Right now you can only purchase kindle books in canada at amazon.com (not amazon.ca). It says that there can be restrictions because certain ebooks were only made available for US. I'm just trying to figure out how widespread this is. I wish i knew of people in canada who had a kindle. There were some threads about it on amazon.com. But i'd rather know someone personally and see if it would affect the types of books i'd get.
This surprised me too. Jennifer what about your selection from your library?
I'm not really interested in getting ebooks from my library. I don't think they have many yet anyways. I"m mostly just interested in books that i can't get otherwise. And one of my favorite authors has a bunch of her books (novellas) in limited release. So you can only read them by ebook. And i really want to read them. I could do kindle for pc. But i hate reading on my computer.
I think i could get most books i want. I'm just not clear.
-
Now that I'm getting eBooks from my library I'm not going there as often.
I would not want to sit at my computer and read a book. I hope Bureau En Gros can answer your questions.
I actually don't think they will necessarily be able to answer my questions. They will know how to use the kindle. And they will know you have to buy the books from amazon.com. Unless the salesperson has one i don't think they could answer my other questions. I just need to find an actual person who has one and buys books a lot from amazon.com.
Chuckling away here.
Just got home a few minutes ago, have to get ready for work tomorrow, shower, and leave again before 8pm. This is all the time I have for my life.
All for a guy who has no intention of getting married again, really nasty divorce and custody battle still going on for son. I try to understand, but sometimes I wonder what the heck I'm doing.
Might have more time after this weekend if my being at his house is going to interfere with his relationship with his 14 year old son. I just don't want to be in the middle of something and then get blamed later for words or actions I did. I am clueless about teenage boys, only know about girls and that was difficult enough for any parent.
:)
Gotta go.
Mega vibes.
Trying to post every day, and find time to read and catch up.
Love you.
Miss you.
Really want to make it to one of the LACC shows.
This is the part i don't know. Or understand.
Right now since i don't have a kindle registered to my amazon account i can't almost buy an ebook and check if they are letting me buy it. It says i need to have a registered kindle to my account before i can do this. I thought there might be some notation on each ebook.
DR Jane, i just sent a detailed email to amazon kindle support. Not sure what to expect because when i used to email amazon i would always get form responses that never even addressed my issues. Not sure if there will be improved email assistance for kindle users. :)
-
One example of a funny amazon exchange.
There were some thin books i wanted to buy for my niece. These are kids books very thin. Maybe 30 pages.
Well amazon has books listed by weight and by number of books you buy. You'd think that it wouldn't cost the same thing to ship a 20 page kids book vs a 500 page adults book. Even though they say they ship certain things by weight. They wanted to charge $3 for the kids book. Plus $5 for shipping. Plus an extra $4 per book. Does it make sense to charge $9 to ship a book that costs $2 to ship.
So i asked why they would charge shipments this way and they wrote back a form letter not even addressing my complaint! It was sort of funny but not really as i really wanted to know the answer since i had a giftcard for amazon.com that could not be transferred to .ca.
-
I had a good Thai dinner with my friend Joseph Rubin and then he listened to the second CD of EILEEN. I think he really liked it. After that he showed me the NYPL website for photos from DEAREST ENEMY, which he is working on with me.
I've sent Kim Criswell an email about playing Mrs Robert Murray of Murray Hill, who on Sept 15, 1776, detained the newly landed British generals at her farm while General Washington and his army escaped from Manhattan to the Bronx and avoided capture by the British.
-
Back from our opening night - a terrific show, sold out house, great reaction. There were a few unfortunate lighting issues, which I completely do not understand since they were correct at the dress/tech. One poor singer sang the entire first verse of his song in the dark. The lighting guy has to come in tomorrow and fix those cues and I will not let him leave until I've seen three cues before and after the fixed cues so that I know they're correct. But I got a good laugh because of it - when it came back to me after the song, I said "If you want to see the first verse in light, you'll have to come back."
But I got a good laugh because of it - when it came back to me after the song, I said "If you want to see the first verse in light, you'll have to come back."
BK, other than the lighting issue, congrats on the terrific show, sold out house and great reaction!! ;D
The part i am unclear on is what it says for each ebook title that will let me know in advance if it is US only.
Is there a way for you to know this now if you go to Amazon to order?
This is the part i don't know. Or understand.
Right now since i don't have a kindle registered to my amazon account i can't almost buy an ebook and check if they are letting me buy it. It says i need to have a registered kindle to my account before i can do this. I thought there might be some notation on each ebook.
Jennifer, just use the Kindle PC app (which is free) to buy e-books in Canada from Amazon.com for use on your computer. Then you can find out which books you are able to buy. You can transfer them to a Kindle later, whenever you are able to get one. Your Amazon account is based in Canada and that's how they determine where the book can be sold. Whether it's on a computer or an actual Kindle device is irrelevant. It'll either work or it won't. :)
One example of a funny amazon exchange.
There were some thin books i wanted to buy for my niece. These are kids books very thin. Maybe 30 pages.
Well amazon has books listed by weight and by number of books you buy. You'd think that it wouldn't cost the same thing to ship a 20 page kids book vs a 500 page adults book. Even though they say they ship certain things by weight. They wanted to charge $3 for the kids book. Plus $5 for shipping. Plus an extra $4 per book. Does it make sense to charge $9 to ship a book that costs $2 to ship.
So i asked why they would charge shipments this way and they wrote back a form letter not even addressing my complaint! It was sort of funny but not really as i really wanted to know the answer since i had a giftcard for amazon.com that could not be transferred to .ca.
Maybe you know someone in the US who would use the gift card to buy your books and get the free shipping (if the order is over $25) and then send it to you for the ACTUAL cost of shipping...which would probably be a lot less than what Amazon.com charges.
