Title: THE HALCYON DAYS

Well, you've read the notes, the notes lamented the loss of shared experience and mom and pop stores, and now it is time for you to post until the halcyon cows come home.

I watched about 20 minutes of GRIMM last night since SUPERNATURAL was a rerun....but I haven't really gotten into it yet.  I don't think last night's episode was a good one for me to start with.

TOD:

I used to shop at Lazer Blazer, too, and also at Dave's, which closed a few years before I left Los Angeles.  There as also a great laser disc place on Reseda (Anybody remember the name?) that is gone.

I think that a major problem with Larry Edmunds is the change in ownership, but that's all I'll say on that subject.

Borders is gone and I don't think Barnes & Noble will be here in another 5-7 years.

Indeed, with the exception of used bookstores and some specialty shops, I think that there will be no brick/mortar bookstores around in another decade.  Yes, that's sad, but the reality is that you can buy books and DVDs much cheaper on-line than in a physical store that has to pay a major overhead.

BK, if you're like me, you sell 90% of your books (and CDs) on-line.  There is an occasional special order sale at a brick/mortar store and a lot of copies are sold when you make a personal appearance and/or give a talk, but the Internet is where the sales are.

And, as I'm discovering with the one-person plays I've published via CreateSpace, I'm starting to make more sales on Kindle than in paperbacks.

The world changes....

Good morning, all! This is an insane weekend with a lot of work, trying to get as much of the fragmented Kern scores ready for the copyists ASAP. I have copies of the original pit parts for the Act Two opener "Hot Spot," that I need to put back into score and see if I can match up the lyrics. I've got about 5-6 numbers like that and my deadline for as much as possible is Tuesday morning.

This morning, I need to make my jaunt to Toyland to check on the space. I haven't been there in over a week, and given the current status of our situation with the Master Toymaker, I need to ascertain that it's still there.

BK, I don't see anything wrong with Liz recording the song for Brad, since she recorded it for you ten years ago, and the recording is now O.P.  I worked with him on a concert for a singer about five years ago, and I gave him both of Liz's recordings, along with aseveral others I'd done. At the concert, the singer even used Liz's arrangement of "My Heart Is So Full of You,"  which I believe she loaned them. Since it only reinforces any similarities between the two orchestrations, I was surprised that he asked her to do it.

All right. More coffee, meds, and Toyland.

TOD:

I so agree with all you said bk. After working Monday to Friday I used to like nothing better than to spend Saturday in London browsing amongst the numerous record shops and specialist bookshops. Invariably I would find people I knew and who I could chat with about the latest films and soundtracks. Internet shopping is no substitute for browsing in stores; being able to physically handle the product and go straight home with it. I didn’t stop going to those places – they just gradually began to close down. Amongst large chains I miss Borders, who had a big presence here and where I enjoyed reading a book or magazine over a coffee. HMV is still around and I go there a lot and am willing to pay a bit more than internet prices because I prefer to be out and about and amongst people, not to be sat in front of a computer all day (which reminds me I must go out now!).

It's been an interesting morning here at LGB. I got selected for secondary screening - just the hand swab. The lady in front of me had a full bottle of wine in her carry-on... And they didn't make her throw it out. -Did the liquids restriction get lifted? One family almost missed their flight since they weren't responding to the "Final Boarding" pages. And one woman did miss her flight by just a minute - watching her plead with the gate agent was kind of heartbreaking.

Otherwise... It's been a good morning for me so far. The airport shuttle arrived a few minutes early, and the other passenger that was picked up en route was also heading to Long Beach.

Yesterday was a perfect last day in L.A. for me. Lunch with bk at Musso & Frank, complete with a guest appearance by Richard Sherman, was lively and sparkling. -And my "side" of Lyonnaise Potatoes was huge.

My friend's birthday party in Santa Monica was great too. We just grabbed some tables at the Loews Hotel there on the beach, watched the sunset, drank some cocktails, ate some surprisingly good hotel happy hour food, and devoured some great cupcakes. The hotel's bar area was a bit short-staffed due to a private event in the main dining room, but the manager managed to take care of us, and he even comped the valet parking for some of us. It was a nice gathering of people, about 12 of us, and there were a few other friends from Richmond too.

One of the great things that came from The Brain From Planet X experience was meeting my darling (Today's BD Boy) Mickey, the ever-talented Grand Pooh-Pah, my beloved ELmo/Mr. Lar, the dapper MusicGuy (whatever happened to him and his fainting couch?!) in LA and then so many of you wonderful HHWers in NY and from other ports of call who attended the NYC festival (and then you other endearing HHWers I know by "site" only)... The dear Enabler, the infamous Temptress of Sin, spent a day showing me and Cason the NYC sights -- and introduced me to those addictive cookies and Monkey Cake...Lots of good HHW memories thanks to The Brain.

(Mr. Lar introduced me to this here site -- so he's to blame for such an E and T lurking, slacker HHW member as myself....)

DR Jeanne ~ I'll try again and type real fast. The AmeriCorps connection is because the theatre is a non-profit civic arts center (got a Gallery, so visual arts too). It's well-established (active since 1969) -- 194-seat venue -- with a $345,000 annual operating budget. In addition to our 6 main stage, there are all kinds of events, programs, staged readings, fundraisers, and concerts (adult and kid choirs) -- and lots of out reach in the community (on many of the fundraisers and events we partner with other nonprofits so the arts benefit lots of folks and kids in addition to enlightening and entertaining them). They have given Cason lots of artistic freedom in addition to his technical directing duties. He's taught workshops and classes on site and at local high schools; directed main stage, Ghost Talk, and new works; produced new play festivals for youth playwrights and adults; initiated Team Tech (a service learning project for teens, college students, and the young at heart ); and has auditioned for and acted in several main stage shows (brought down the house as Freddy in Dirty Rotten Scoundrels). The stage directing and acting gigs have been on his volunteer time since only his technical directing and community out reach and youth-related gigs can count toward his AmeriCorps hours.

So I think you can see in there where BK's getting him involved in the LACC Theatre Alumni group doing fundraisers, projects, and events; in the producing gigs with Krizterland staged readings and shows for the musical festivals; and through The Brain From Planet X experience, all provided lots of opportunities to hone his theatrical/business skills -- or as I refer to it -- adding lots of useful tools to the ol' creative/business tool belt. A lot of of LACC and Kritzerland tools are in Cason's career belt -- hence my thanks to BK the other day.

I was very saddened a couple years ago when I learned that my beloved video store, Video Vault, was closing. The owner told me it wasn't the other video stores, it wasn't Netflix, it was wasn't Amazon that was their undoing. But put it all together and it was just too much. Video Vault specialized in non-traditional video--a far cry from Blockbuster. I still miss them!

It would start as soon as it is approved, and even would go back to the the protected date that I filed.  But it could take anywhere from six months to two years.

And now that I'm back at my brother's place, I'm doing... wait for it... laundry.

*When we got back from Santa Monica last night, the smell of skunk was in the air, both outside and inside their apartment. It smelled like a whole family of skunks went into defense mode. It was so strong that it initially smelled like someone had lit some matches. Well... It appears - well, smells like the skunk odor got into my luggage - more like, on it. Some I'm Febreze-ing my bags as well as re-washing some clothes.

But...I really liked it!  The score, of course, is great.  And though some of the show doesn't make sense, the performances were terrific.  My favorite song, "She Wasn't You," is sung three times in various versions by several people.

There was a hint of it on my carry-on bag, my computer bag and my checked baggage. It wasn't that "evident" - I had to get close to smell any odor. I guess I'm just a bit hyper-sensitive to it right now. Thankfully, the Febreze seems to be doing the trick.

I had a bottle of wine taken from me that was given to me on our previous flight.

In the middle of the auction, which is telecast live on the radio, a man had a heartattack.   He was on the upper level, so I didn't see him.  The auctioneer, the dog and his handler were up there collecting donations when he suddenly said "Is there a doctor in the house, we have someone who is having a heart attack"  Luckily, this was a big roller fund raiser so two doctors and a nurse took off up the escalator and the paramedics were right behind them.  I heard the gentleman is recovering, but it was a strange moment.  One of those....."We're going to take a break here....let's here some music from the band" moments

I just found out tonight that I won a kindle! Yeah!

This blog that i read daily ... well the lady who runs out got a kindle fire. And she decided to give away her gently used kindle. It looks like it's a basic 6 inch screen with no 3G (not sure what that means). But the pic she posted has a keyboard (not sure what you do with that). This lady is very reliable (she's sent me stuff before). So i know she will send it (she's already de-registered it).

The only crazy thing is that i have a funny feeling my mom bought me a kindle. The crazier part is that i think she did this today. Not sure what to do. She knows i don't like surprises. So not sure why she wouldn't tell me. But she did say she had to go to Bureau En Gros this morning and that she couldn't tell me why.

I guess i will have to ask her tomorrow!

Dang! This one-hour limit on long-in time drives me nuts. Just wrote a long-winded post to DR Jeanne (Miss K longwinded?! Never! Hah-hahaha!) -- and hit the post button and had one of those "don't ya hate it when it happens moment" -- shoot, yeah! -- got a you can so longer post type message (dang and shoot are my family friendly edits, I think you know what I really said, and in my strongest Texanese).

There's a little box to tick on the login screen that says "always stay logged in."  No time limit that way.  ;)

That's what i do too. Only click the other box if i'm not on my computer.

The funds were raised for a group that has a goal to insure that every child has a Christmas gift. Their goal was $125,000, but I"m sure they raised more than that. People were putting $5000 and $10,000 checks into the hat when it was passed.

The Little Yellow Dog Auction is part of it.  While I'm not a fan of auctioning live dogs, this one is really different.   The least I know of that was paid was last year in the middle of a blizzard and that was $10,000.   This year was a record.  The dogs have always gone to very good homes.  At the dinner afterward (the band was included since we participated)  Stoney was already being cuddled, played with by the young girls and was being sneaked pieces of filet mignon by one of the men.   He's going to be a very happy dog.   My guess is he may also get to play at the baseball field with the Explorers.

I always pick my own gifts. I just like what i like.

Normally she would not buy something without telling me. But i don't get why she couldn't tell me what she was getting at Bureau en Gros. And we had looked at the kindle there last week. And i said i really wanted it.  Maybe she didn't get it. It's just odd that we were there last week looking at it and then today she had to rush off there and said she couldn't tell me why.

DR Jennifer - If your mother did end up getting you a Kindle, would she be offended if you returned it for store credit and/or another item?

Maybe she was excited that for once she could surprise you with something she knew you wanted.  Unless you would prefer the new one I would simply say you won a slightly used Kindle.

And.... 12 hours from now, I should be landing at JFK... Something tells me I'll be taking a serious nap once I'm back in NYC tomorrow.

Oh... The airport shuttle service just refunded my fee for the "on-time guarantee pick up" that was not on-time. :)

Not sure I mentioned that the woman who sits next to me had my music.  I figured she did and was very glad to see her carrying two folders.  Tomorrow is our Christmas Concert.   I know I keep saying this, but I'm so glad I joined this band.  I really do love it.  I didn't realize how much I missed being in the band

What is the matter with these Russian protesters? Thousands of them gather waving signs and I can't figure out a single thing that is written on the signs.  Obviously, poor planning!

Russians are notorious for their handwriting. I, for one, can NEVER read anything they write!

It's all Greek to me.

If you get approved, when would that start?

It would start as soon as it is approved, and even would go back to the the protected date that I filed.  But it could take anywhere from six months to two years.

Well, I certainly hope you get it!

Ditto!!

Congrats on the free Kindle!  Mine was free, too, but I got mine with points from my debit card.  The 3G is cell phone technology...meaning, you can use it anywhere you could use a cell phone.  Mine doesn't have 3G, either.  I can download to the Kindle through a USB cable from my computer or use Wi-Fi.  They all should have that.  And you will use the keyboard.  You can search a document, there's a web browser (if you have Wi-Fi), things like that.
