Well, you've read the notes, the notes smelled of honeysuckle, and now it is time for you to post until the honeysuckle cows come home.

As promised, here are the two new Kritzerland releases, the last two of 2011.  Order the usual way if you want 'em in advance (and I wouldn't wait on The Raven) - it's 19.98 EACH, plus 3.75 shipping (covers both if you're getting both) - so 23.73 for one title, or 43.71 for two.

Kritzerland presents its final two new limited edition CD soundtracks for 2011:

THE RAVEN/AN EVENING OF EDGAR ALLAN POE
Music Composed and Conducted by Les Baxter

and

THE TRIAL
Music and Arrangements by Jean Ledrut

In 1960, Roger Corman made House of Usher, the first of his inspired-by Edgar Allan Poe films, and it was an exploitation sensation, playing to packed houses and packed cars at drive-ins.   Knowing a good thing when he saw it, he followed with more inspired-by Poe films, including The Pit and the Pendulum, The Premature Burial, Tales Of Terror, The Raven, The Haunted Palace, The Masque of the Red Death, and The Tomb of Ligeia.   These were all stylish horror films, but only one of them was an out-and-out comedy and that was The Raven.

With a screenplay by Richard Matheson and delectable performances by the likes of Vincent Price, Peter Lorre, and Boris Karloff (along with a young Jack Nicholson and a fetching Hazel Court), audiences expecting a horror film instead got a horror comedy, with an emphasis on the latter.   It didn’t matter that the emphasis was on the latter, because audiences still flocked to see it.

Adding to the fun of The Raven is the delightful score of Les Baxter, who did several of the Corman/Poe films.   Baxter uses electronics as well as conventional orchestra, and the result is a really fun and interesting score that just propels the film along its merry way.  His eerie electronica for the opening narration of the Poe poem is really effective, and his music for the battle of the sorcerers is classic Baxter, as his exhilarating music for the wild ride to Scarabus’ castle.

In 1970, AIP produced a low-budget hour-long TV show called An Evening Of Edgar Allan Poe, starring Vincent Price doing solo recitations of four Poe stories: “The Tell-Tale Heart,” “The Sphinx,” “The Cask Of Amontillado,” and “The Pit and the Pendulum.”  Naturally, AIP turned to their favorite composer, Les Baxter, and he provided his usual excellent work and some of his most adventurous scoring – a little more atonal than he usually did, but some seriously great music.  The show has a brief main and end title theme, and then four complete scores.

For this release, the first ever for this music, only one tape could be found, the second of two reels.  However, it was a full reel and contained music from not only the second part of the film but several cues from the first part.  Taking our cue from the popularity of the La La Land release of Baxter’s score from X: The Man With The X-Ray Eyes, which was the same situation – one tape, partial score – we decided that some Raven was better than no Raven, especially as we actually had a lot of music from the film and unlike the partial score to X, none of it was source music.  So, with close to twenty-five minutes of original score, it’s actually a pretty good sampling of the film’s music.  We also include several of the electronica cues as a bonus.   The mono tape was in excellent shape.  This music for An Evening Of Edgar Allan Poe was released on CD by Citadel – that release had shrill and unpleasant sound and was in some sort of phony stereo – for this release we present the score from its original mono tapes and in proper order, and include for the first time the main and end title, taken from the DVD release.

THE TRIAL

In 1962, Orson Welles brought The Trial to the screen in what he himself called “the best film I ever made.”  Whether one agrees with that assessment or not, The Trial is Welles at his Wellesiest, with brilliant imagery and atmosphere so thick you can cut it with a knife.  Filmed in gorgeous black-and-white, featuring a screenplay by Welles, and incredible performances by Anthony Perkins as the persecuted Joseph K., Romy Schneider, Welles, Jeanne Moreau, Akim Tamiroff, and Elsa Martinelli, The Trial truly captures the Kafka spirit while also being uniquely Wellesian.  The film is a nightmare of paranoia and persecution, along with unexpected moments of Wellesian humor.  It is an astonishing film, where every component comes together to create a world that is bleak, desolate, and ultimately futile.

One of the elements that contributes heavily to the atmosphere and feeling of the film is the score by Jean Ledrut, using both original music and adaptations of Tomaso Albinoni’s stunning and iconic “Adagio in G minor.”  Ledrut only scored a handful of films, including Abel Gance’s 1960 film The Battle of Austerlitz.   Ledrut’s score relies heavily on variations of the Albinoni “Adagio,” as well as some wonderfully atmospheric original cues.  There are several jazz-flavored pieces, as well (played by the great jazz pianist and composer Martial Solal, he of Breathless fame), and it all works splendidly, especially as a listening experience.

The Trial was originally released on both an EP and LP.  The latter is one of the rarest of all soundtrack LPs.  The CD is mastered from a ¼ inch tape source in excellent condition.

Each release is limited to 1000 copies only.  The price is $19.98, plus shipping.  Go to the item page and click on the link to find out about it.

CD will ship the third week of January – however, never fear, preorders placed directly through Kritzerland usually ship one to five weeks earlier (we’ve been averaging four weeks early).   To place an order, see the cover, or hear audio samples, just visit www.kritzerland.com.

Also from yesterday:

I was browsing eBay last night and was shocked to see how much some of our stuff is going for - signed Chitty went for seventy or eighty bucks last week.

And HERE (http://www.ebay.com/itm/CHITTY-CHITTY-BANG-BANG-Kritzerland-Signed-/390373027686) is one that's listed at $99.99...to start! :o

It's ending this afternoon, but I don't think that it'll get any bids.

The reason why I've been absent lately excuse......

I've been having laptop problems. I have 9 bad sectors (according to the guy at the Genius Bar at the Apple Store).

I went to back up my hard drive and found out that my backup  disc drive somehow got damage and now longer worked.

So I went out a bought a Dream Machine by Apple (which is not exactly cheap and the money I spent would have gone towards Christmas Gifts for family and friends) and spent three and half days backing up my hardrive. (My laptop would shutdown after three hours if I didn't use it. Finally figured that out and disabled it.)

I didn't go on line during the backup process for fear of losing anything else or screwing up the backup

One of the bad sectors holds almost all my music from my ITunes. That was almost 20,000 tracks. Most upsetting for me was the over 300 songs (many of them rare and very difficult to find) that I collected for my Academy Award winning song collection these past two years. I got really really upset over that. I really didn't care about the other music.

I had planned to give a CD of my Christmas Mix as gift this year, but that's not going to happen.

Luckily #1:
Finally I remembered I had all the songs on my IPod and had upload  them to my IPod.
The good news is that any song I downloaded from ITunes is recoverable. I also found some other songs in folders that were somehow not save in the ITunes music folder. These included songs I had downloaded from Amazon.

That leaves over 19,000 songs I am going to upload again.

Luckily #2 I still had all my Cd's. I had been cataloging them as I was planning to sell off my collection of Cast Albums, Broadway/Film related and vocal albums as one package on Ebay. I will be holding off on that.

Luckily #3 I had backed up all my documents and photos on "thumb drives" as I was trying to free up my hard drive because I thought it would make things going faster; not knowing I had bad sectors that was causing my problems.

After the New Year I will take it into Best Buy and see if my extended warranty will cover the replacement of the hard drive. I'm will to pay any difference to get a larger drive. (If they will do that).

So that's my sad story. :-)

I'm going to go this afternoon to decorate my aunt's Christmas tree. Since i don't have a tree it's sort of nice to decorate someone else's tree.

I only got to very minimally decorate my sister's tree this year. My niece wanted me to help her put some "extras" on the tree while my sister was out :)

Plus 1 or 2 years ago i gave my niece this pretty purple tree with lights (it's small and sits on a table). Boy does she love that tree. She put every small ornament she could find on it!

My poor little niece said, "i want a little tree for me" :(

Good morning, all! I slept really late and I am pondering the events of the day. At noon, I must be at Staples as as soon as they open to pick up storage boxes iy's impossible to move around this apartment without stumbling over piles of libretti and full scores for THE RED MILL, ROBERTA, and DEAREST ENEMY. I may need to purchase shipping envelopes as well, so my next project this morning is to group tgether everything I will be shipping on Tuesday morning and see what I will need to buy.

At 12:30 I'm taping the Lincoln Center broadcast of NUTCRACKER, and the rest of my day will be spent on building an orchestra score from scratch for the ROBERTA Act One Fashion Show.

I enjoyed the new OTB, but I kept thinking of Alet as Yoni and her big hair in THE BRAIN FROM PLANET X. I'm seeing Andy in ONCE on Wednesday, and I really look forward to it. He does look a bit like Michael Douglas!

My TV woke me up again last night when it switched itself on again. It seems to happen every Saturday night at midnight. Turning off the auto software update didn't make any difference. LG have now suggested checking that all timers are off and then do a factory reset.

Perhaps you have ghostly visitations?

Just sold TWO more stories to Chicken Soup for the Soul - that'll be for "Messages from Heaven" which comes out late Feb, and "I Can't Believe My Dog Did That!" later this year.

If you're in LA, don't miss LA Ballet's "Nutcracker" - they are a class act all the way ... and I've seen a LOT of ballet in 63 - dount 'em - 63 years!!!

Ah yes.....I remember costuming that scene as well.......one night I got to play of Zoltan Karpathy when the actor had a conflict....and since I figured he was Hungarian.....I made all of my "r's" into "w's" - it received many laughs.....and since I was a better waltzer than the other guy.....the ladies had more fun dancing with me.

I got the City Ballet NUTCRACKER on tape, and it's so much better than the filmed version made in the 1990s. I continually marvel at Balanchine's decisions and especially his direction of the children: the business given to Marie's naughty brother Fritz is inventive, constantly in character, and often very funny. I love the choreography of the March at the beginning of the Christmas party, where he desperately tried to get a partner and every little girl avoids him; he ends up being partnered by his mother. The children in the City Ballet production are consistently well-cast, and the kids on the broadcast seem perfect. I also like the way the party covers a time span of 2-3 hours in about 30 minutes, from gifts, to diversions, to toasts, all primarily staged as social dancing. I first saw the production in 1966, and my memory of it , for the next 15+ years until I saw it again, was the dreamlike image of Marie gliding on a doll's bed out of the house and into a snow storm. It was magical in 1966 and it still moves. I've seen so many productions of this ballet, but no other production seems to me so right in nearly every moment.

Did you get to see this new PBS broadcast? If not, try to tape it when it's broadcast in Indianapolis.

My packages are ready to be mailed, so I am quite happy at the moment. I just caught a wonderful special on Actors Equity and the AIDS crisis; nice interviews wth Judith Light, Denis O'Hare, Billy Porter, Ann Harada, Tom Viola, Marc Kudisch, Kathleen Chalfont, and Jerry Mitchell, with footage from Broadway Bares, the Gyspy of the Year, and the Easter Bonnet competition.

We had a 15-piece children's orchestra, which was great. We have a wonderful tuba player, tiny wisp of a girl, who seems to get lost in her horn. Then these magnificent growling, Kurt Weill-style sounds come belching forth.

I have a Playbill for THE PRODUCERS in Boston that is signed by Brad Oscar and Andy Taylor!

Yesterday afternoon, my parents had a fire at their house. Dad was sitting in his chair when the floor lamp beside him popped and he looked up and flames were shooting up and got the curtains.  I was on the phone with mom at the time.  He yelled for her, unplugged the lamp and took it outside, she screamed told me there was a fire and she had to go and hung up.   You can imaging how I felt - I called my brother and they went over there immediately - they live about 1/2 mile away.  The alarm company called the fire department and by the time they arrived, mom and dad had the fire out.  (yeah mom and dad!).  They had magnatite windows on the inside of the window to keep the cold out and that caught fire and put out a lot of toxic smoke, so there is a lot of smoke damage.  They can't stay there until it's all cleaned.  They'll find out tomorrow how long that will be.

There was damage. On the positive side, they will refinish the wood floors (only damaged by all the water mom and dad threw on the fire)  mom will get new carpet in the bedroom above the den, she'll get new wall paper in the den and hallway and the entire house will be professionally cleaned.   I'm still waiting to see photos.  They are hoping to be back in the house in a couple days, but if not, I'll just stay at the motel with them or at my brother's house for Christmas

It was especially frightening for mom.  She is terrified of fire and unplugs things all the time.  After losing Phoebe right after Christmas and now this, I am a bit worried about them.  The best part of it is they did prove they can still handle a crisis and do a good job with it

Thanks all.  I offered to go up and do whatever I could to help, but there's nothing they can do until the insurance adjuster arrives tomorrow. Then they are having Servpro clean, so there isn't much I can do then.  I'll get there Friday and see what's up

Oh, and today's show went well. There were a few passages that "escaped" my fingers, but there were others that finally fit under my fingers today. Hopefully, after a full day of rest, everything is will settle in properly.

DR Cillaliz - Glad to hear that your parents were only inconvenienced by the fire and not injured by it.

Cilla, glad things aren't as bad as they easily could have been.  Is there a product liability suit possible?

There was damage. On the positive side, they will refinish the wood floors (only damaged by all the water mom and dad threw on the fire)  mom will get new carpet in the bedroom above the den, she'll get new wall paper in the den and hallway and the entire house will be professionally cleaned.   I'm still waiting to see photos.  They are hoping to be back in the house in a couple days, but if not, I'll just stay at the motel with them or at my brother's house for Christmas

So... DR Cillaliz... When do you plan to replace their carpet and wallpaper? ;)

In other news...

As I was driving to dinner after today's matinee, I could sense that my body knew that my "weekend" had started. In other words, I could feel the fatigue settling into my bones and brain.

They did prove themselves :)  It is good too that your brother was able to get there quickly.  I hope her fear won't keep her from leaving a light on when they leave.  That really is scary how it happened.

And as for dinner...

I met Steve at Can-Can Brasserie in Richmond's Carytown. I had a cocktail - a Champs-Élysées - the Beet Salad, the Pan Roasted Rockfish and the Fleur de Sel Chocolate Cake with Chocolate Stout Ice Cream. Steve had a glass of Touraine Sauvignon Blanc, the Steak Tartare with Fried Oysters, the Roasted Smoked Trout and the Chocolate Crème Brûlée.

The food and drink were delicious, and it was great catching up with Steve again. A perfect way to end a most "unusual" weekend.

Thank You, DR Jane. It will be nice going to bed tonight without having to think about what I have to do tomorrow - no travel, no practice, no performance, no change of time zone.

DR Jose - what's in a Champs-Élysées?

"Paris Tea Infused Woodford Reserve, Sweet Vermouth, Blood Orange Bitters & Brown Sugar" - Served "Up" with a Flamed Orange Twist.

It was quite tasty. And it also snuck up on me over the course of the meal.  ::)

The smokiness of the bourbon and the acid from the bitters balanced out the sweetness. Smoooooth.

Happy birthday, penny.  Are you just never getting my messages; it's fine if you can't get together with us when you're in town, but not getting a hi back is complex-giving.

Nope - not getting your messages - I stink at Facebook, and when I don't have wireless internet, I just don't come here... I do AOL - we should do email, cuz I can do email just fine! Thanks for the birthday wishes, boychik!

Thanks all for the thoughts for Mom and Dad.  Don't know if there's a products liablity here.  It's property damage that insurance will cover so it would cost more to pursue than you could recover from it.  I think the scariest part is it was just an ordinary floor lamp.  And pop, out of nowhere- flames. Anyway we are all thankful that it wasn't much worse.   And since some of the people effected by the flood here still aren't back in their damaged homes, a few days is nothing
