It's so great to have Time Machine working properly - each backup takes about fifteen seconds or so.  Much better than the forty-five minutes the last Time Machine was taking on the old computer.

Good morning, all! I was so tied last night that I spent the 30 minutes before the ball dropped nodding off. As soon as the bball landed, I told Kathy and Anderson tonight and went directly to bed. I was having a long dream about "Begin the Beguine" - were we recording JUBILEE? - when I awoke this morning around 8:45.

I spent some time catchng up on six pages of posts from last night and i am now informed, Welcome, new DR ClaFong! Did I get that right?

Today the house cleaning continues. I have no plans to go anywhere, and it should be a relatively quiet day. Tomorrow, at some point since we've not yet set a time, I shall visit DR Ben and Anthony with some work for Anthony and some gifts for both.  But that's tomorrow.

I need breakfast and more ocffee before I get to work.

We are looking forward to Dear Larry's visit tomorrow.

We do have to set a time.

Any time after noon is good for us.

Had a terrific time at a do at an old friend's new house where I caught up with old friends and met a few new ones.  I wound up staying to help clean up a little and then to help one of the guests change her flat tire, but there were a few of us and it made the job fun.

This afternoon I drive to my sister's house for our traditional New Year's Day meal of pork and saurkraut.

All this and I have another day off from work tomorrow!  Yay!

I thought that Kathy and Anderson Cooper were funny. I wish they were allowed to show the main stars (like Lady Gaga). But it is funny just watching them talk (her make jokes and him squirm).

I am bummed that the Rose Parade is not today. My sister said that it's because it's the last day of NFL games and that the Rose Bowl game is tomorrow.

To me having the Rose Parade on January 1st is a tradition. Everything here is closed. You wake up sleepy and watch the parade. I hate hate hate that they changed this!

Hmm...  One of the calendars I just opened (which features stylized retro pictures of NYC), has a hanging hook, but it's in the middle of the fold--not very useful.  Also, the weeks on the grid run from Monday to Sunday.  Confusing when you glance at it.  It's getting regulated to a guest bedroom...

Oh...

One of the local cable channels seemed to be broadcasting some sort of American Idol-ish Christmas Chuch Karaoke. -At least that's what it sounded like. When I went downstairs to change the channel - well, turn off the TV - it turned out to be some sort of "modern" worship service. If it was "modern", they should have at least splurged on auto-tune.

bk: I had assumed that the Bruno Cremer Maigret series was filmed in France but I spotted this on the Maigret forum;

The scenes which are supposed to take place in the streets of Paris were filmed in Prague. Because of budget issues, but also because Paris has changed so much since the 1950s, in which most of the action of the series is set, they preferred the Czech capital, where certain streets more or less resemble Paris. For the scenes set outside of Paris, they were mostly filmed in the Czech Republic. Some episodes were filmed elsewhere:

Switzerland for the luxury hotels in Les caves du Majestic.
Ireland for Le Port des Brumes.
South Africa for Maigret et le Liberty Bar.
Portugal for Maigret et l'improbable M. Owen, Mon ami Maigret.
Cuba for Maigret et les Petits Cochons Sans Queue.

When does Eliza sing again DR JOSE?

At approximately 2:15pm this afternoon. At least I think that's when "Wouldn't It Be Loverly" starts. Maybe it's more like 2:10-ish.

I would say 2:15.

Exactly.  Don't worry about the flying; it is the airports that are dangeous.

I just got back from an overnight stay in the hospital, not the most auspicious ways to ring in the new year, certainly. I woke up at about 4 a.m. Saturday with horrible abdominal pains. When they didn't subside after a few hours, I drove myself to the ER, where they discovered not the cause of the pain but a kidney problem that I'm going to have to get checked out with a urologist this week.

Oh John, I am so sorry.  I hope the kidney problem is nothing serious.

I started to watch the film Half a Sixpence with Tommy Steele which was on one of the BBC channels. I haven't seen the film since first seeing it in 70mm but this TV print was terrible. The picture filled the 16:9 screen so was in the wrong ratio and the sound was mono. The picture was soft with some sort of speckling over it and the color looked washed out. I gave up watching after 10 minutes.

LET THERE BE PEACE ON EARTH was written for Unity Churches back in the 1950s.  I was the Music Director of Unity of Portland for many years and one of the writers came out one week, I can't for the life of me remember her name.

She came out?

I went to bed last night, but ended up staying awake until 4:00 a.m.  First I watched (or listened) to the Live at Lincoln Center New Year's Eve Concert.  They were doing an all Gershwin and Bernstein program.  They did CANDIDE and WEST SIDE STORY DANCES for the Bernstein and Concerto in F and the Rhapsody in Blue for Gershwin.  I was not familiar with the piano soloist, Jean-Yves Thibaudet.  Since I know little about music, I  should probably not comment on any parts of it, but it was a nice concert.

Then since it was after eleven, I fiugred that I might as well watch the Space Needle fireworks.  But after that, I could not fall asleep.

Did the four-mile jog, did a little revising of the seven pages, made some additions to them, and have now done fifteen pages, which is, I think, the most I've ever done of the first day of a new book.  And I'm having a great time and may actually do a couple more pages later after the party.

Is this book going to be a racy Hollywood exposé?

Good Evening!

Back from the matinee, and post-show dinner with Steve.

The show went well. We had an almost sold out house. I think my fingers were still thinking it was 2011 in some places, but, nothing too noticeable, hearable. I hope. Of course, when I walked through the lobby after the show, there were at least six "important" people I knew who were in attendance today. Hopefully, they didn't notice or hear anything either. ::)

And The Song Of The Day Is:  MY SHINING HOUR

Mercer & Arlen! One of my favorite songs.
And Definitely One Of My Favorites-Especially With Frank Sinatra Singing

Love the Ella Fitzgerald version, though just about anybody singing it works for me.

I'm a fan of Ella Fitgerald's version too. In fact, her Arlen Songbook albums would definitely be among my possession on that proverbial desert island.

Well...

I think I'm going to take a break from the shredding tonight, and resume it in the morning. I was thinking of heading up to DC for the day tomorrow, but since tomorrow is supposed to be a major travel day - everyone heading from after the holidays - I don't want to be on the highways. So, I'll head up Tuesday instead. I need to "inventory" whatever clothes I still have at my brother's place, and see what I need to send back up to NYC, or just store there until I'm back there in the Spring for The Music Man.

Back from a lovelier than lovely New Year's Day party at Barry Pearl's.  Lots of nice folks there.  I mostly hung out with Kay Cole and her husband, photographer Michael Lamont.  But I also chatted with director Sheldon Epps, Don Petrie, and many other nice folks.  Heard many nice comments about Outside the Box, too, so that was fun.  Of course, episode five will be going up tonight after midnight.  I suspect the upload process will be much quicker and smoother with this here new computer.

Then I came home and did some more writing.  Astonishingly (never happened before) I have written twenty-two pages today.  Normally on the beginning of a new book I'm thrilled if I get to five or seven.  I think on There's Mel I did ten, which was astonishing back then.  But I could not stop and I'm truly getting in the swing of it now and having fun.  I just hope it's interesting but I won't know that until I give the first set of pages to muse Margaret, probably next week.  I don't really need to write this many pages a day - normally, the first week of a book I do about forty to fifty pages over seven days.  I suspect with this one I'll be closer to one hundred at the end of the first week, but we'll have to see how it goes.
