Title: EPIPHANY
Post by: bk on January 22, 2012, 12:27:47 AM
Well, you've read the notes, the notes had an epiphany, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they've had an epiphany, too, and now they're having breakfast at epiphanies.  We don't allow groaning here at haineshisway.com

Darren Criss (in HOW TO SUCCEED) is an extraordinary comedian, one might even call him a brilliant clown.

I don't understand vocal technique (or what sound systems can do) well enough to understand why he's so amazing on a number like "I Believe in You" or "Rosemary" or "Been a Long Day" but seems to (as indeed has been reported) trail off every now and then in some other songs.

DR Jane re: your question last night about netgalley ( I could email you but maybe someone else will be interested in the answer).

I'm not an expert since i just joined this week. But my understanding is that you have to be a librarian, someone who sells books or have a blog, or review a lot of books on goodreads. I don't think you review your books on goodreads (I was told that was why i could join). You could always check the site out (netgalley).  But it seems like you don't get approved for most of the books you ask for anyhow :(

I'm 25% finished with Catch Me. And so far it's excellent. Will your library get an e-copy? It sounds like that is much easier for you to read. I must say other than the light issue (I need a bright light right near my kindle) i am loving not holding the book (never thought i would love it).

Did something interesting yesterday. Went with my niece to her soccer practice. IT was moved to my old high school. Have not been there in quite a while.  I showed her around (some of it was blocked off). But the yearbook photos are all mounted on the wall. And i showed her mine (her mom's was behind the gate but we could just make it out). She was so excited to see the pictures.

I'm impressed by the speed at which bk is writing but I don't think he will beat the speed of the British writer Donald S Rowland. He usually began writing a book on Monday and finished on Friday. He wrote and had published over 500 novels in 25 years up to 1983, under not only his own name but also under about 70 aliases. He eventually burned himself out - not surprisingly - when he was in his mid 50s and found he just couldn't write anymore.

Considering I need to type not more I won't be writing a blog.  I need to get used to buying books again.  I just checked the library ebook site again & Catch Me isn't on it.  I'm second on the queue for the hardcover when it comes out.  I like the idea of reading a brand new book, that is until I read it in bed.    I took the nice cover off of my Nook and find it more comfortable without the extra weight on it.  I like the Nook Color with the back-light for reading at night.  The downside of that is reading it in the sunlight is difficult.

Back from the get-together, which was a card-making workshop and sales party.  Not sure how much of this I want to get into, but will probably order something to help out my friend who hosted the event.  Richard and I were going to go out to eat, but it's very foggy and likely to get worse as it gets dark.  Think we'll stay home and eat tuna glop for dinner.

I finally started cracking on my VHS-to-DVD project this weekend, though it's been a slow start.  So far I've got Bill Irwin's THE REGARD OF FLIGHT, a PBS showing of A.R. Gurney's THE DINING ROOM and a broadcast of A MIDSUMMER'S NIGHT DREAM that was done at the Delacourt in 1982 (my gawd--has it really been thirty years since I've seen it?!?).

I'm hoping I can get into the habit of throwing on a tape at least every other day and burning the DVD (with menu chapters in needed) immediately afterwards.  This might become tedious when I get to having to convert the Tony Awards broadcasts, but we shall try to continue to be ambitious...

And yet, there were some who told you that you would love your Kindle!

I love to read, but i really did not think i would love my kindle this much.  Because I love covers. And I love actual books.

I really thought that i would only use it to get books that i could not read in hardcopy.

I still don't like or want to pay the prices of new ebooks (i'm sorry but $13 seems like way too much when you can buy the book in hardcover on the bookdepository for less).  But I had no idea there were so many free books.

I do like it for books i can't get otherwise. And i had no idea that i could check my email or update my goodreads account. So i like that part.

Well, up until last year, we never had any real appreciatable snowfall.  I planned on getting one this year but because we had no snow all November and December, saw no need.  Even with this weekend's storm, I doubt I would have used it.

OK, that is what I thought.  I remember having lots of know when we lived outside of Philly.  One of my best experiences was sledding under a full moon.

I always love it when the skies clear up the day after a snowstorm.  The sunsets are beautiful!

I don't remember sledding under a full moon but I have gone skiing under one.  With the snow reflecting it it's almost like daytime.

Beautiful flute, Cillaliz. Did you trade in your guitar?

Yes, the guitar and the little amp I bought last summer.  The trade in helped a lot, but it was still really expensive. It was actually a difficult decision, but I decided I'm worth it. And as my sister in law said "just skip one trip this year and it's paid for"

I have to say that since I've started playing the flute again, my life feels like it's back in balance.  I don't know if that makes any sense.  I grew up in an area were there were no private teachers and my band directors really weren't much into the flute, so I was really pretty self taught.   By the time I got to college, I had the tone but didn't have the technique of many of my classmates who had been getting private lessons all their lives.  In the middle of the second year,  I lost my confidence and quit music.  My flute teacher and band directors in college tried to talk me out of quitting but I wouldn't listen and wouldn't give it one more try.

So,  that's how I became a lawyer.  Deep down, I still believe I'm a musician who practices law and now I feel like I'm getting my music back.  It really feels good.

I am going to look into taking private lessons now.  There is a teacher at the local community college who has a doctorate in flute and gives private lessons through the college.  You don't have to enroll in school to take lessons.  It may be a way to get into some groups.  I'm really glad I'm doing all this.  I've been playing again since September and it just keeps getting better.

I met a woman today who reminds me a little of you. She runs a non-profit food truck that fees the homeless and anyone else in need of something nutritious to eat. She gathers leftover fresh produce from the farmers market and breads from several bakeries to include in her meals.

As she gets to know the regulars, she has begun to make 10 vegetarian meals and 1 vegan meal, plus numerous diabetic plates.

She is a former lawyer who left the practice years ago after losing a client on death row. She recently enrolled in culinary school and has decided her new mission is to combat hunger "one plate at a time." She drove up to Joplin last summer and fed many of the workers there right after the tornadoes.

I spent two hours finessing and redoing stuff, to keep it in line with my epiphany.  Once that was done, I began new pages.  And as I'd write them I just had to keep accentuating the positive.  At any point where I'd start to get whiny about something, out it came.  And then, as always happens and has happened in the case of this book in particular, the book began writing me.

And I am happy to say that just prior to the family Hollis arriving for dinner, I wrote the last line of the book's final chapter.

We had a lovelier than lovely dinner and then I came home and began the outroduction.

And I am happy to say that I have finished a book.  523 manuscript pages in three weeks.  I am ready to crash.  Tomorrow I shall finesse, although I've already done a little of it already, and then I'll print out 223 pages, which is what I wrote in one week, and I'll deliver them to muse Margaret and hope she likes them.

I am spent.

I got an e-mail from David Levy - I'd sent him the entire section about our record label - not the very first part about the formation, but once we were up and running.  He thought it was great, and he sent me some very interesting notes.  I had the timeline wrong on about four things.  Since the book is fairly modular, I was able to just cut and paste those sections into their proper timelines - all that was very helpful.  He also added a few details and asked why I'd left certain things out, like not even mentioning the Sony reissues we did at the label.  I ended up incorporating almost all his notes, but didn't feel mentioning the reissues was important enough to slow down the trajectory of the story at that point, and while he had a couple of other interesting notes, again I felt they really weren't important enough or involved things at the end of the book when I really didn't want to be too detailed.  So, that's what I've been doing.  I'll be up at nine tomorrow to read what I wrote today (about twenty-five pages), I'll finesse whatever needs finessing and then print out the pages, Xerox them, and get them to muse Margaret.  I'm sure it will take her at least a couple of days to get through that many pages.
