Topic of the Day:

On my hi-def DVR:  last night's episode of "Royal Pains" and last Tuesday's episode of "Glee."  I can't believe that I haven't watched "Glee," yet!  What am I waiting for??  I also have the two-hour pilot to "The Firm."  I should be able to watch all of these this weekend.  I don't have rehearsal and have nothing else to do.

In my CD player at work:  NOTHING!  I got a new computer a couple of weeks ago and the new ones no longer have built-in CD/DVD players. :'( That means I need to get my own portable CD player...again.  I used to have one, but I think I gave it away (either to my niece or my dad).  They're pretty cheap these days, I'm sure.

TOD:

DVD: The High Bright Sun - 1964 British film starring Dirk Bogarde recently released on DVD for the first time. Good transfer. I don't recall seeing the film before. It's OK but nothing special. Let down by co-star Susan Strasberg who gives a hopeless perfomance!

Blu-ray: Nothing. But Cleopatra is on her way and I must order the new Spellbound.

Made it to the Cowboy Breakfast by 5 a.m. and only had to drive around a half-hour before finding a parking place. Ran into a couple of old friends who were cooking morning. (It's safer behind the food lines, than with the tens of thousands on the other side.) Hope I got some good photos.

DVD: I still have to watch "Moneyball" before it's due back to the library and the rest of season two of "Friday Night Lights."

CD: George Antheil, in honor of finishing "Hedy's Folly," which is about the torpedo that he and Hedy Lamarr developed during WWII. Great book. Highly recommended.

Car CD: Disc 2 of 30 of "11/22/63"

Good morning, all! After several good nights of sleep, it all went to hell last night. Such is life.

Today, I have quite a bit of DEAREST ENEMY work, and then I'll begin notes for Disc 3 of the Herbert songs. It's raining outside, so I'm happy to have no reason to go anywhere.

TOD:
DVD: Doris Day-Gordon Macrae films from Netflix, a couple of operas including LA GIOCONDA
CD:  Herbert songs, Guy Haines, THE FORTUNE TELLER, DIE FLEDERMAUS
    VCR: old porn

DR Jane if you liked the Perfect Husband ... well the FBI profiler series only gets better and better as you get to know the main characters better and their stories develop. I love this series.

I didn't like it as much as the DD Warren series.  I'm glad you said they get better, which I suspected to be the case.  I have added them to my wish list at the library for eBooks.

I decided to read these before reading CATCH ME, which so far is not available through the library eBooks.  While browsing Barnes & Noble for it they recommended an Iris Johansen book since I like Lisa Gardner.  Have you read her?  B & N has her books for $7.99 each & then I found the next four books, 8-11, in the Eve Duncan series I have yet to read. The price was only  $19.99 for the book collection.  I started reading book 8 last night.

BIG spike in sales for my Carole Lombard play this month.

I guess it's because that January 16th was the 70th anniversary of her death.

I'm kind of surprised at how some washing machines do not have a fully adjustable water levels. My parents have "new" machines, but the water level settings are "small", "large" and "extra large". -And, I swear, the "small" setting provides just enough water to wash six pairs of socks. Meanwhile, "large" is, well, "large". Where's my "medium" setting?

My machine sets the water level automatically.  I read a number of complaints regarding machines that do this & was somewhat concerned about it.  So far I'm pleased with the water levels in the loads & haven't had a problem with soap residue.

Last night we watched MIDNIGHT IN PARIS.  While we enjoyed it we don't see it as a best picture.

I really liked that movie.  Paul and I were discussing it over lunch today.   We're going to see THE ARTIST at 4:20

Wonderful story on the New York Times website about Mary Tyler Moore, who is getting a lifetime achievement award this weekend.

We had a very very busy and very productive week.  We both stayed late working on a project that was a rush job.  So I decided we needed to close at noon and take the afternoon off.  It's such a nice treat after working hard all week

I enjoyed my flute lesson last night.  My teacher was amazed at what I was able to accomplish without formal training.  Now we're going back to the basics, starting with breathing, lol.   Seriously, I'm very excited to unlearn my old bad habits and learn some new and better habits.

The Monarch Scientist is going to bring me some caterpillars today. She has too many and trusts me to raise some.

That makes you a butterfly farmer.  What a cool thing to be

We don't sell them. The Monarch Scientist and I are only butterfly gardeners.

I stumbled upon a list of "alternative meaning" words from The Washington Post.  The paper asked folks to supply alternate meanings for a bunch of words, and then they selected what they thought were the best "alternatives":

Abdicate (v.), to give up all hope of ever having a flat stomach.
Balderdash (n.), a rapidly receding hairline.
Circumvent (n.), the opening in the front of boxer shorts.
Coffee (n.), a person who is coughed upon.
Flabbergasted (adj.), appalled over how much weight you have gained.
Flatulence (n.) the emergency vehicle that picks you up after you are run over by a steamroller.
Frisbatarianism (n.), The belief that, when you die, your soul goes up on the roof and gets stuck there.
Lymph (v.), to walk with a lisp.
Negligent (adj.) , describes a condition in which you absentmindedly answer the door in your nightie.
Oyster (n.), a person who sprinkles his conversation with Yiddish expressions

Last night JMK commented:

Well I'm back from opening night.  Some really inventive pieces, though I will say some of these writers "want to be Sondheim," to quote a song Guy Haines once sang, and evidently others want to be Duncan Sheik.    But some really great writing all around, and all but one of the cast in my show were indeed able to count to 7.

So, I was wondering JMK, did you want to be Frank Wildhorn?

University of Phoenix is one of the first universities to offer on-line classes and degrees. They have been doing it for quite a few years now. The ad campaign "I'm a Phoenix" refers to the graduates of U of Phoenix and the success they achieved by going to UofP

Thank you, Ben, I was going to get around to answering Laura's question (sometime in the next five years), but I appreciate you doing it for me.

WIT with my friend Zachary Spicer opened on Broadway last night.  Looking at the reviews, I guess he was "also in the cast."

Didn't even see his photo in the opening night group.

Ah, but that Broadway salary - and credit!

Not to mention the IBDB.

From DR Jennifer:
Quote

I think i like this series just as much as the D.D Warren series. I definitely think it gets better because from what i recall the relationships are not really explored much in the first book. I find this makes a big difference.

Sorry, I have not read Iris Johansen.
