Well, you've read the notes, the notes got away, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - like the time, they got away, too.

And the word of the day is: FILIOPIETISTIC!
Smoke on your pipe and put that in.

Morning all.
That is all.

It's Tuesday already-- the week is flying by.

Such good news from DR GINNY.
And DR JANE - your photos are so great!!! Especially loved Mr. Belvedere....if it is a mountain....or a volcano....
DR LAURA - I am sorry you did not like RENT. But believe me, you are in good company....VERY GOOD COMPANY.
-
DR JOSE how was the food? Were there libations as well? What was the most interesting conversation you had....AND of course what was the BEST auditioning costume you saw?

TOD:
THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW

THE DEAN MARTIN SHOW
THE ANDY WILLIAMS SHOW

THE SONNY AND CHER SHOW (or was it COMEDY HOUR)
THE SMOTHERS BROTHERS COMEDY HOUR

TOD:
Well.....we loved the variety shows.....so I will name some of the ones that might not be so popular with the populace....in addition to the usual, I enjoyed:
Tennessee Ernie Ford
Hullabaloo
I guess my favorite was The Ed Sullivan Show.....because he had it all from Soup to Nuts.
-
DR Jane: Loved your photos as well. Unfortunately I'm usually in bed this side of the Atlantic when most of your posts appear so don't have the chance to comment on them at the time :)
-
It was on The Ed Sullivan Show that I first saw Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, some real ballet dancers, some Broadway show stoppers, AND Jayne Mansfield playing the violin.

I used to enjoy seeing many of the imported shows which were on BBC TV such as Andy Williams, the Bob Hope specials, Danny Kaye, and Perry Como.
-
Happy Birthday to Mr. Charles Dickens!
-
Just received the Blu of SPELLBOUND. It's in one of those flimsy eco packages which I hate. As usual, I've put the disc in one of my standard Blu boxes which I keep for that purpose. The eco box is in the trash (well, recycling bin actually).
-
The variety shows and specials on NBC were always the best because you never knew who might show up unannounced.
-
Good morning, all! The alarm went ff at 6:30, but I was too wrapped up in dreams of Patti Lupone snging in the middle of 79th Street and Broadway and helping Drew Narrymore on a photo shoot. I am not making this up and I have no idea in what part of my subcnscious these things get shaken loose. So, at 7:45 I decided genug ist genug and got out of bed. Since then, I've bathed, dressed, fixed a paragraph of the notes on Disc 3, and had my first cup of coffee.
Today, I'll do fixes to my notes from my phone conversation with the Man from Philadelphia, make a run to the NYPL around noon in search of the play The Merry Wives of Gotham, work some more, and then go down to City Center for the dress of Merrily We Roll Along, one of my least favorite Sondheim shows. I'm sure the cast will be good, and it will be nice to see Joshie and Rob Berman.
More coffee.

I am glad to know I am not the only one.

Did anybody watch SMASH last night?

Tuesday morning greetings! I'll be E & T again most of today because the grantwriters are meeting at lunchtime and my second knitting class starts this evening. In this class, we're making a Reader's Wrap:

Google is quite festive today for Charles Dickens' birthday.

Did anybody watch SMASH last night?
Reactions?
I watched it two weeks ago online. I liked it, and posted my comments at the time.
*Of course, now that the pilot has been officially broadcast, a bunch of "critics" are coming out and saying that the show is not a true representation of how a Broadway show comes together. Well... Of course, it's not. It's a TV show. There is so much waiting and tedium involved in the process and you really can't show that in "real time" and expect it to be entertaining and attract viewers. Although, it would be funny to see one hour devoted to a chorus call where you just watch audition after audition after audition. Or just waiting area outside the audition room. ::)
-
As for the Topic of the Day...
"The Donny and Marie Show"
"The Mandrell Sisters"
"Pink Lady & Jeff"
And I can still picture moments from Tony Orlando and Dawn's show.

Okay, I'm a day late in posting, but Mark and I attended Kritzerland show #18, and it was wonderful of course. Bruce helped us get a better table right up front, which we soooo appreciate! Anyway, Mark and I love Michelle Nicastro's CDs, so it's really great to hear those songs life. The Dressing Song is one of our favorites, and Melody Hollis did it splendidly. Again, how does she learn all those words?! And how does she sing them so fast? What an amazing brain she has. Anyway, other highlights of the show included hearing how Bruce and Alet Taylor first met, getting to hear Bruce sing once again, and hearing Mr. Sherman sing a lost song from Mary Poppins. It was a delightful little song called "Chimpanzoo", but there was no mic stand attached to the piano, so the accompaniest had to lean over and hold the mic for him. Mr. Sherman's comment was something like, "this is the nicest mic stand I've ever used." Very funny. Also, always charming is the way Bruce can never figure out how to say Kritzerland at Sterling's Upstairs at Vitellos. He always mixes up the order of the words which gets some giggles, but we forgive him because "he's old". The only disappointment was that our waiter never told us what the specials were. I knew nothing of the pasta with chicken and pink sauce until Bruce told us about it. Now I know to always ask what the specials are. Live and learn.

Our favorite variety show was the Carol Burnett show. Classic!

DR JOSE how was the food? Were there libations as well? What was the most interesting conversation you had....AND of course what was the BEST auditioning costume you saw?
DR JRand - Last night's food was good. My grilled grouper entree was a tad overlooked, but the appetizers were very good. I was in a "fruity mood", so I had a strawberry margarita followed by a strawberry daiquiri.
Oh, and hotel's fire alarm went off during the middle of dinner last night. Apparently, someone had left a lit cigarette near one of the smoke detectors. Thankfully, we only had to stand outside for about five minute while the fire department checked things out. -That was exciting.

DR JOSE how was the food? Were there libations as well? What was the most interesting conversation you had....AND of course what was the BEST auditioning costume you saw?
As for some of the other food I enjoyed in Memphis over the past couple of days:
-The fried chicken at Gus's Fried Chicken.
-Homemade Soft Pretzels and Beer Cheese Fondue at Local Gastropub.
-Green Chile & Chorizo Mac'n'Cheese also at Local Gastropub.
-The donuts from Donald's Donuts that the conference provided us each morning at the theatre. The Chocolate Pudding-filled ones were my favorites.

Well, that's because you're a lesbian.

DR JOSE how was the food? Were there libations as well? What was the most interesting conversation you had....AND of course what was the BEST auditioning costume you saw?
As far as conversations go, well... I would sit in on the Dance Call, and a couple of times I would check in with the choreographer to see who her favorites were, who were the best dancers. And then we'd critique the dance attire. ;)
-
DR JOSE how was the food? Were there libations as well? What was the most interesting conversation you had....AND of course what was the BEST auditioning costume you saw?
As for "BEST auditioning costume", well... There were no real "costumes", but there were a couple of "fashion don'ts". Apparently, the "Jersey Shore" look is considered "appropriate audition attire" by some people.

Oh no....a Snookie audition.....pretty scary. DR JOSE thanks for the reports.
Is it true that sometimes the "favorite" of the choreographer is not the same as the "best dancer"?
-
Vibes for DR SAM.
And thanks to DR AMY for the Kritzerland Vitello's at the Upstairs and the Downstairs Abbey report.

Re: Carol Burnett Show. At my site's biweekly staff meeting, the guys, most of whom I would guess are in their thirties, were discussing "Love Story," and I mentioned the great Burnett parody of it, where Carol, as Ali, asks for a three minute egg and Harvey, as Ryan, kind of looks at her with a "well, maybe not. . ." expression. Crickets. . . ;)

Of course not every variety special was....well special.....

Sometimes, but not in this case. However, that "situation" usually applies to Directors. ;)

Apparently I didn't watch tv in the 80s either. And we had a tv then.

LOL......DR LAURA.....without the competition of cable and satellite, the networks could program just about anything.
LOL...DR JOSE.....yes, that is true....at ALL theaters.

The "grilled grouper was a tad overlooked"? By whom?
You didn't miss it on your plate, did you?

I try to overlook fish that is on my plate.

Now that I have established, per se, that I am my usual light-hearted self, I must rant a bit over my incredulity at stupid things people write in forums online that otherwise belie the intelligence I always took them for having.
At FilmScoreMonthly Messageboard, someone has started a thread entitled, "Has any movie ever offended you?"
I was somewhat intrigued. Has a movie ever offended me? No, actually. I've found "parts" of a movie offensive...a miscast actor, an obtrusive, jarring music score, an inane script or lackluster/lousy/lethargic directing. But no movie, as a whole, has ever offended me.
And then I read replies.
O! My Dear G!
One poster said that "Cocoon" was a highly offensive film. Why? Because he had taken his mother to see it at a time when his grandmother -- who was in her 80s and not expected to live much longer -- was very much on the minds of her family. Yet, here is this film about seniors whose children were (gasp! How unbelievable!) "ignoring" their parents...so the parents hook up with aliens and blast off to another planet where they can live longer lives in good health with agile bodies and minds. That, in essence, was VERY disturbing to mother and son and the movie just SUCKED because of it.
Another poster hates, Hates, HATES "Sleepless in Seattle" because it simplisitcally and unrealistically (gosh! Imagine that of a movie!) reduced a man's personal, tragic loss of his wife into a tale in which everyone is forced to believe that he can find TRUE LOVE with another woman, no matter how deep his grief is.
I swear! People take personal baggage into a movie theater hoping the movie will be escapist fare...and then find themselves wrestling with their personal demons and taking, personally, the movie's premise as though it were a personal affront to them.
Add to that another poster who is always negative, Negative, NEGATIVE about any and everything out there that supports and issues things he dearly loves -- classic films on DVD or Blu-ray and classic film scores on CD. Here is a guy who professes to love movies and and movie music and then goes out of his way to nitpick and/or revile the efforts of those who, by going out on a financial limb because they, too, love these things, make the products possible.
NOTHING is ever good enough. The man is highly irritating, and he's been like this for years. No, he's not that Steven person who blackens the day of every theater lover. No, this one is named Joe, and he suffered some brain damage in 2001 when he was struck by a car while he was out walking in L.A. That's awful, of course. But his life is now posting to the internet. He has long ago forgotten the difference between reality and fantasy and spins some ridiculous lies based on other folks' personal experiences or his own imaginings. He spews these fantasies out in various forums and draws quite an audience of folks who "think" he knows what he's talking about. He's a smart guy, and he does know a lot about films, film making and film scoring. BUT, he inserts himself into some of the stories he tells about other people's experiences, thereby passing them off as first-hand personal accounts. He's also a very bitter man because he's persona non grata at most Hollywood studios where, in the 1980s, he worked producting laserdiscs of films such as "1776", "The Private Life of Sherlock Holmes", "Oliver", "Counterfeit Traitor", etc. He also walked out with DAT tapes of film music which "mysteriously" ended up being bootlegged by European CD labels.
At any rate, this Joe person posted a nasty little item on a thread about the UK Blu-ray of "Cleopatra" saying he sure hopes the label Twilight Time doesn't have anything to do with the film's U.S. release "because" they don't have good artwork on their DVDs and they offer no extras or booklets.
Joe completely ignores the fact that, without Twilight Time, none of the titles he has bought would have been available on any other label. No, truth is completely inconvenient for him.
Rant over.

Off to NYPL in my "Merry Wives" search. I've got about half of my rewrites finished so that makes the afternoon easier to deal with.
I loved "The Garry Moore Show," "Carol Burnett," and I have only vague Andy Williams memories. I also like Perry Como's show.

Ah, as with Frank Langella, Barry Bostwick is such a good actor that I'd forgotten that he was once a sex symbol.

SMASH debuts on Monday night
Proposition 8 decision today
What a week, and it's only Tuesday
-
I loved "The Hudson Brothers" variety show for the time it was on and am always surprised that people don't know Kate Hudson's father from that TV show.
-
I forgot about The Hudson Brothers. I mostly remember them from a Saturday morning show....not the animated one....that was pretty funny!
And DR FJL....how about those splits from Mr Bostwick!!!
I watched SMASH online last week....and it was okay. I might watch it for a few weeks and see how it goes. It features a major irritant of mine, but there are some things that might overcome that for me. And the music is okay.....

DR ELMORE the Dream-O-Matic 6000 cannot fathom why you have connected Ms LuPone and Ms Barrymore in your dreams....although it could indeed be you are puzzled by the success of both ladies in careers outside their usual categories....and feel that you yourself should be more recognized for things you do that you are not known for.

Home for a bit between the grantwriters' luncheon in Dayton and my knitting class in Hamilton.
-
Back from a good work out at the gym. I've been trying to be good about eating breakfast about an hour before leaving for the gym so I'm having lunch when I return and not breakfast. Interesting that even eating more food during the day I'm working to maintain my weight & not lose any of it. I just burn fat but don't add muscle. :(

The Carol Burnett Show
Sonny and Cher
Ditto on "The Carol Burnett Show!"
I vaguely remember watching "Sonny and Cher" (and I guess Cher on her own), but I'm sure that I watched them...my whole family watched them all together.
"The Dean Martin Show" is another vague memory, as is "The Donny and Marie Show."

I loved most of the variety shows mentioned. Didn't care for the Brady Bunch Variety Show, but I remember even liking things like "Joey and Dad" or whatever it was with Joey Heatherton. And of course, there was Manhattan Transfers show.
Carol Burnett was my fave. And thanks to Dan the Man, I'll be laughing the rest of the afternoon at the "Love Story" bit.

The guys ... well they ate it ... but didn't say anything. But i guess if they ate it then they probably liked it.
I gather you will be making this recipe again.
Except that i made it up :)
Sometimes that's the best kind!
-
And I'm off to eat a light supper and head for Hamilton - bye for now!
-
I forgot about The Hudson Brothers.
Wait until next season when Rachel and Kurt are no longer on "Glee"....am sure they will be joining the cast of "Smash"
Excellent, and not a bad idea! :)
I would prefer a cultural exchange program with DOWNTON ABBEY--in exchange for them getting Shirley MacLaine next season, SMASH should get O'Brien. The show needs a sneaky villain.
-
Speaking of DOWNTON ABBEY (and I often do), I received the Season Two DVD at my desk this afternoon. I just may start watching tonight.
SPOILER WARNING FROM LAST WEEK'S EPISODE ------------
I now understand why they killed off William. They needed to make room for Shirley MacLaine on the Season 3 DVD cover. It's a pretty tight squeeze on there...
-
Last day before surgery and it's a crazy one at work.
But good afternoon, all.
When will you be able to let us know how you are doing?
MEGA SURGERY VIBES!!!!
Thank you, all. I won't be home until Friday. So, I doubt I will get to post before then.
Do you have a friend who can email one of us so we don't worry?
-
Bitterly cold tonight. Walking back from the train station I felt as if my ears were about to drop off.

Last I looked it wasn't available on NetFlix. Now it is. :)

You need a hat or scarf to cover your ears.
-
This morning Keith noticed Downton Abbey is available & had already moved it to the top of our queue.
-
Surgery may be delayed a week, and I just found out about it five minutes ago. If it is, it will take hours tonight to unravel this mess.
-
DR John G, SORTING THIS SITUATION OUT VIBES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
-
Delays are irritating.

We will have a new instructor at Zumba tonight and it is

ME.
Oh dear.....well.......those poor people. Tuesday usually only has about 8 in the class, so we shall see.
The only Equity Theatre where I do work is doing a fine play starting in mid-February......but one of the actresses is so bad.....I can't stand to hear her talk and her choices are always wrong and she ACTS ACTS ACTS in such an irritating manner, I don't think I will be able to see the show.
I thought I could take a couple of other times, but found myself hating being in the same building with her as she ruined another show.....so I am thinking......but I am not optimistic.
-
So I guess I had better get my act together and get on the road.
-
I have read THE MERRY WIVES OF GOTHAM, which takes place in an Irish convent (Prologue) Park Avenue mansion, a law office on 23rd Street, Irish shantytown at 69th and Fifth Avenue, and some place on the lower east side where the gang The Rovers has evil intentions toward the rich pompous ass Lambert DeRhonde. It's a great play for two actresses in their mid to late forties. Tney never do learn they are sisters but they do become mothers-in-law when the poor Irish girl marries the Park Avenue matron's son. I enjoyed it.
So, it's time to bus down to Encores! for MERRILY WE ROLL ALONG now. Report at 11.
DR JohnG, best of luck with the scheduling problem.

Are you doing Singing in the Rain?

John G., I hope everything gets sorted out.

After a two year search I finally found the last song for Academy Award song collection. Don't know why I didn't think of it before, but I wrote the composer estate and in a few hours I had not one but 4 versions of the song.
The Cat and The Canary from the movie "Why Girls Leave Home"
The winner that year was "it Might As Well Be Spring" sung by Louanne Hogan. There were 14 nominations that year!

Still touring Moorea on the jeep.

I don't know if this downsized photo will show how red Keith's legs. My burn was on my upper body.
-
Last photo of Cook's Bay, named for Captain James Cook.

Surgery is scheduled for tomorrow. I now just want it over with.
-
Good luck, John. Don't answer the phone tonight, so they can't cancel it again.
-
Surgery vibes for Dr John G.
-
Well, I'm off. I'm ushering for the tour of Young Frankenstein (http://wcpa.squarespace.com/upcoming-events/2012/2/7/the-national-broadway-tour-of-young-frankenstein.html) that's at the Washington Center for the Performing Arts! It's going to be great!! ;D
Be back later!
-
Thanks, Laura. It's a very good idea, and I wish I could, but they're now getting me through Skype, too.

DR JOSE how was the food? Were there libations as well? What was the most interesting conversation you had....AND of course what was the BEST auditioning costume you saw?
And did you get any phone numbers?
-
Hi DR TCB how are you doing tonight? When do you finally see the MRSA doc?
-
Did anybody watch SMASH last night?
Good idea. And as these auditions go on and on, each of the staff members can have a musical daydream. It might be kind of fun.
-
I didn't have a chance to watch SMASH last night. But will watch it either today or tomorrow. Can't wait!
I had no interest in watching SMASH.
-
;D
-
Oh golly gee
8) 8) 8)

It's bitterly cold here too.
;)
-
They are building a new front porch (about twice the size of the old one) outside my front door. Looking forward to filling it with flowering plants this spring. ;D

Must go see the boyfriend. His house is warm and cozy.

Speaking of composer's (or in this case lyricist's) estates, FJL knows I need to contact Norman Gimbel for some absolutely earth shatteringly important information. ;)
-
I'm trying to figure out who suggested I read RAISING STONY MAYHALL. It might have just been an ebook the library offered. It isn't the sort of book I normally read (about a Zombie). If a person did suggest it I would like to thank them. DR Jennifer was it possibly you? If not, check it out.

Watching a motion picture I've never seen, entitled Love Story.

Watching a motion picture I've never seen, entitled Love Story.
No need to apologize. ;D
-
It was such a huge film when it came out my school actually had a special field trip arranged so that kids could go to an evening screening! With a school bus and everything. Can you imagine?
-
I've just had the sweetest email from an e-quaintance from another discussion board who had been out of touch for several years. The internet really is the most amazing place.
-
I know for a fact Skype has a Quit button. :)
The computer has an off button.

Well, let's not do anything drastic.

I am home from Encores! The production is quite wonderful. the cast is excellent, the use of projections and films helps with the transitions and locales, the orchestra sounds great, this is probably the best possible production of this piece, and I still think the show is second rate.There are some wonderful moments, i think the addition of Franklin Shepherd, Jr in Act Two is a good touch, but Act One left me cold. I admired it and lked some of the score. Then, in Act Two, Celia Keenan Bolger, who is quite wonderful, joined in on a trio of "Not A Day Goes By" with the man she loves and pretty blonde he's marrying and it hit home hard; by the time "Our time" began I was a blubbering mess.
I think the production will be a huge success for Encores! and I wish it well.
-
It's just starting to sink in that after tomorrow I don't have to go to the office for 5 1/2 days.....woo and hoo!!! Guess I should finish the petition I'm supposed to be writing.

Congrats, Michael! What an accomplishment. :D
I even got the infamous song from a movie no one saw; which was the one that DR. Druxy set up a 1-800# so people could call it and listen to the song.
Actually I think its better than two of the other nominations: Ave Satani & Come To Me

Good Evening!
Well...
I really need to get some sleep. And soon. So...

~~~~~SURGERY VIBES FOR DR JOHN G~~~~~~
-
DR elmore - Thanks for the Merrily report. I'm looking forward to seeing it tomorrow night. -And I'm fully prepared for Celia to make me cry. Again. ;)
-
Did DR JOSE ever get into town? Last I heard, he was descending.
DR JRand - Yes, I did. I did!
After I landed and deplaned, I headed right for the taxi stand at LGA, and head back into Manhattan. During my trip, I got a call from the casting director. Uh-oh! Did I write down the wrong time for the auditions? He was calling to confirm me for the afternoon session, which, as it turned out started at 2:00 instead of 1:30. Yeah! That extra half hour made all the difference.
I was able to drop my bags off at the apartment. I was able to pick up my mail - which included some very important papers. I was able to have some lunch too. In short, I was able not to rush to get to the auditions. :)
...And the auditions went very well.
I played for a bunch of old friends.
I played for some people I've admired for years.
-And there were a bunch of bk-related folks too.
And it was great seeing the team from Arena Stage again too.
:)
-
And since I have another full day of auditions tomorrow, well...
Goodnight.
I blubber whenever I heard Mary sing "Like It Was," but I think it's George Furth's characters that leave me cold about that show. I hate them at the beginning and can't warm up to their story as it regresses. Only the music does it for me.
-
Thanks, all. Will be back in a few.
Vibes to those in need.
And good night.
-
Good luck with your upcoming surgery, John G.
-
Thank for the "Merrily" report, Larry. I always have tears rolling down my face during several of the musical numbers.
Day, after day, after day, after day, after day, after day, after day, till the days go by............That one kills me every time.
-
"Bobby and Jackie and Jack" is one of my favorites--was it performed well this evening?
That one makes me laugh and cry---such promise, followed by such tragedy.
-
They are predicting a bit of the white stuff in New York this evening.
Be back later!
It's later! Tonight, I ushered for the touring production of Young Frankenstein and it (still) was quite a fun show! The main leads all looked and sounded very much like the original cast, but they still were great performers in their own right.
I was told that they only sold half the house and about the same for tomorrow night...and that they're going to lose money on this. Not enough tickets were sold for the two performances. :-\ But the people who saw it tonight really enjoyed it.
