Well, you've read the notes, whom read the notes, who read the notes, and now it is time for you to post until the cows come home - they're currently debating whether it's correct to say MOO or MOOM.
-
And the word of the day is: ANACRUSIS!
-
Morning all.
That is all.
-
Just me right now. Sorry I missed you, Ben!
-
Good morning, all! Another day of tsuris, I fear, debatng how to respond to an email; I just had to respond to one that was difficult enough. It was also another night of peculiar dreams and much restlessness. I think we have a recording set, I fear we don't, then I think it's back on again, and I don't like the stress. I like the work.
I need more coffee and some food.

re: ebooks not being autographed.
At least for the kindle there is something called kindlegraph (go to kindlegraph.com) where authors can sign their ebooks. Never tried this before.
-
I'm disappointed. Today is the winter carnival at the park near here. But unfortunately it is going to be colder than -21C. So no fair. :(
Well it seems like the fair is still on. Since i haven't seen any cancellation notice. But it's too cold. That is where they have the sledding, the horse drawn carriages and the toffee on the snow. I really hope they postpone.
-
I wonder if the Grammy red carpet tonight will be all about Whitney Houston.
-
Interesting reading about the proofers in the notes.
I think some people just have a gift for finding errors. And i'm not talking commas. It's sort of crazy though that none of the proofers are finding the same things.
-
Well it's ALL WHITNEY ALL THE TIME 24/7 on television and the inner web this morning - I hope no one needs to hear about anything else.
-
It is 18 degrees with a windchill of ZERO here right now. So it is February....and the SuperBoil missed it by a week - LUCKY DUCKS.
-
And the word of the day is: ANACRUSIS!
And The Song Of The Day Is: YELLOW SUBMARINE
-
The other night I watched a movie titled SECOND FIDDLE with Tyrone Power and Sonja Henie....with a score by Irving Berlin. There were two really nice songs....it's too bad Guy Haines has chosen all the songs for his new cd....I had never heard either of them.....
I Poured My Heart Into a Song
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDKOpa98VUw
AND
I'm Sorry For Myself - which doesn't seem to have any clips on YouTube....but is lovely and ironic....
-
Re proofers: I guess it's a good thing several people are reading the manuscript, since they are all finding different things.
-
Next Sunday a new TAR starts - just so know in plenty of time.
-
I hope DR JMK will check in today and tell us how Betsy's show
went yesterday....
What got the biggest laugh?
-
Hmmmm......I wonder how that happened?
-
Next Sunday a new TAR starts - just so know in plenty of time.
TAR???

While I understand your point, BK, as someone with an English degree, I must at least offer the opinion that writing grammatically is not necessarily "arch", it's simply being correct. The easiest way to differentiate between who and whom is that "who" always takes a verb.
-
I only stayed for Betsy's 5 o'clock show, JR, and she did fine. She was a little nervous, which probably only I realized and therefore had a tendency to say "you know," which I've never heard her do before under any circumstances, but other than that, she got some nice laughs and people seemed to really enjoy her. Her biggest laugh always tends to be one of the jokes I gave her (naturally ;) ). She does a routine about GPS and talks about how the voices are always female. She then says if the unit had a male voice, you'd stick in the address and it would say dismissively, "Yeah, I know where that is." ;)
-
My earliest memory of Whitney Houston is of Don Imus making fun of that little horizontal line at the top of her nasal ridge that would appear when she would sing. He did a whole routine about it on VH1 that I still remember very well.
-
Done the laundry. Today's roast is chicken.
-
More vibes to dear John G!!!!!
-
Good morning, all.
-
Thanks, FJL.
-
Me want roast chicken. Which means i may just have to make my own. Crispy skin. Nothing better.
-
Next Sunday a new TAR starts - just so know in plenty of time.
TAR???
The Amazing Race.
-
Thanks for the report DR JMK....... I like Betsy's routine that includes the line about Jews never seeing a UFO on the way home from temple.
-
I think in a book like BK's, the voice of the narrator is highly important and if the narrator is consistent, then the reader will likely forgive the writer or not even notice who vs. whom. We all have our pet peeve phrases, though. Stephen King does three or four that grate on me, though I can't think of them this morning.
-

Werewolves. :) She actually tried that bit the first night, and the 20-something, goyische audience didn't quite get it LOL.
-
I completely agree, John, but I also have to admit I decry the slow dumbification (is that a word? it should be) of the general populace that plays out in everything from poor grammar to inept spelling. The internet has only increased the stupidity. Just yesterday I was noticing how many idiots (technical term) on various Forum boards spell definitely "definately". My actual pet peeves tend to be with more arcane matters of usage, such as my previously mentioned issue with the silent "t" in "often," and the difference between a quantifiable "fewer" and the more inchoate "less".
-
This is an anal retentive quality I definately ;) inherited from my Mother, who was like the Grammar or Pronunication Nazi. I still have a letter she received from the Editor of Time back in the 1980's because she eviscerated their incorrect use of skimp/scrimp.

The Oregonian repeatedly incorrectly uses "disinterested" to mean "uninterested."

This morning's viewing is the very strange Passolini "Medea" with Maria Callas and some guy running around without his pants on. That must mean it's Greek. Or something. Or maybe just Passolini.

While I understand your point, BK, as someone with an English degree, I must at least offer the opinion that writing grammatically is not necessarily "arch", it's simply being correct. The easiest way to differentiate between who and whom is that "who" always takes a verb.
English degrees are for people with English degrees - books are written by people and those people have been bending "rules" since the year One and those rules have changed constantly over the years. What was once looked on as a horrible mistake is now accepted. And I agree with John G. about the voice of the book. Anyone can write a grammatically perfect book, but that does not make the book well written or even interesting. I've been bending rules about everything my whole life. Some I've bent are now common practice. Some aren't. I've been bending grammar rules since book one. I had three proofers on that one, too, and the comma thing drove me batty and I just refused to do it in certain instances because, for me, the rhythm of the narrator in that book was very specific and I would not allow overdone punctuation to make reading a line that should sail to become herky-jerky thanks to six commas. Will not do it. I do the stuff that's important and that makes sense and that doesn't hurt the flow. And I'm not the only one.
Spelling and laziness are something wholly other and I don't like either. But some awfully great books have first edition errors that got by proofers - fixed in subsequent editions. Most recently, J.K. Rowling's books, each and every one, have had blatant errors in them that have been corrected in subsequent printings, making those error copies even more valuable. East of Eden has an error. Agee's A Death in the Family has an error. And on it goes. You try to catch it all, but sometimes one or two get by the best of proofers.

I was up at six, then finally fell back asleep. I'm very tired but must perk up very soon.

Whom is tired? Meem, that's whom.

Here is a typical sentence with correct comma placement that would drive me crazy: Blah, blah blah blah, blah, blah blah blah blah, blah, blah, and blah.

Oh thanks DR BEN......what a terrific Irving Berlin song.....and I had never heard ANY of the songs in the score until I saw that movie.
-
Hmmmmmmmmm......I had to go order a used copy of MR BK'S Unsung Berlin......I can't believe I don't have that CD set!!!

Since it wouldn't be a Grammy day without a spoof of the probable big winner (not that that's a good thing)
sadly, with a disclaimer that it was done before news of Whitney Houston's death. :( Until last night, the big Grammy story was going to be Adele's likely sweep of the awards - and CBS charging megabucks for the commercials because of Adele-mania.
Tune of Adele's ROLLING IN THE DEEP, as if sung by the CBS ad salesmen pushing those $800,000 30-second commercial spots

Lay night the Vixter and I went t a local high school production of Sweeney Todd (NOT a "junior" production)
Their Sweeney was VERY good and the Judge was good - the rest of the cast was OK - but they really gave it their all - a very ambitious show for a public high school and I did not notice any censoring
The set was amazing! there were two two story pieces that turned 360 degrees and opened up - the centrpiece of course being the pie shop/barbershop - with a working chair and slide - the bodies went down there and rolled out downstairs by the oven
It was very impressive especially for a public high school in a blue collar neighborhood

I find myself surprised at how many of my theater-loving friends don't know Adele and Rolling in the Deep from a hole in the wall. but then, i was in a fog last week with the Super Bowl, which I thought was just a bookend for a show with Madonna and Cee Lo.

Good news from DR VIXMOM.
Very funny DR FJL.....and I am sure it would be even funnier if I knew the original song.
-
Here are a couple of inner web suggestions DR VIXMOM.
If the lingering odor is still a problem, there are two methods you can try: coffee and vinegar. We’ll start with the coffee method.
Coffee is known to absorb odors, so fill the coffee mug or small bowl with about 2 tablespoons of ground coffee and ˝ cup of water.
Set the cup in a small bowl (to catch any overflow as it boils) and place it in the microwave.
Microwave the coffee on high for about 2 minutes. Be careful when you go to remove it as it will be HOT.
Repeat as necessary.
Another odor remover is vinegar. Fill the small bowl about half full of vinegar and place it in the microwave.
Turn the microwave on and let it heat until it steams.
Once it has developed a good amount of steam, turn off the microwave and let it set for about 10 minutes.
Wipe out the microwave with water and a soft cloth.
There may be a vinegar smell in the microwave, but this will dissipate within a day or two.
-
DR George thank you for the movie review from last night.

Here is a typical sentence with correct comma placement that would drive me crazy: Blah, blah blah blah, blah, blah blah blah blah, blah, blah, and blah.
The problem iwith what you just posted is that your sentence has no verb so it cannot be a sentence. I think a post here, and I'm very guilty here on runon sentences, misplaced prepositions, etc, I think i've been called himorless and other things as well, but posting here is something I write quickly, often and incorrectly using it's for its and too for to or two. For my professional work, I want a proofreader to catch these things, along with other incorrect things, from obective case to transitive and intransitive verbs. I prefer to see the same correct grammar in what I read or hear; the illiteracy in tv writing and the news is appalling to me.

I have a beef stew in the slow cooker - just the thing for a bitter cold day
Can you send directions to Deer park?

This has been a day of trouble shooting and long phone conversations. I feel I've achieved very little.
-
I find this wall to wall Whitney coverage absurd.
-
Some days I am glad I have no tv, JMK.
Most days, actually. Especially now that it is campaign season.
-
Betsy, a former news anchor/reporter/writer, has a major pet peeve: if reporters/commentators use a singular verb with media. She has been known to scream at the television. ;)
-
Well it's ALL WHITNEY ALL THE TIME 24/7 on television and the inner web this morning - I hope no one needs to hear about anything else.
Hmmm, not on my TV. I saw only a couple of brief stories about Whitney this morning. Ironically, I have some extreme skiing competition playing in the backbground; and one of the favorites they keep talking about is Bobby Brown. Every time they say the name, I have to turn around and see which Bobby Brown they are talking about.

Can you send directions to Deer park?
Take the Ronkonkoma Long Island Railroad train from Penn Station to Deer Park. The trains run every hour on a weekend. Vixmom will be waiting for you at the station. It's a little over an hour on the train. Bring your iPod and chill out and look at the "lovely" scenery on the train ride out. When you return it will be dark so there will be nothing to see ;)

Sunday afternoon greetings! We are back from Lima after a long day. There was a vestry meeting after church and I was hoping to sit in Richard's office and read while he was in the meeting. No, the wife of one committee member and the mother of another were also waiting and wanted to visit. Then we paid a nursing home call and had a quick sandwich at the new Arby's. Didn't get home until about 4:30.

We are talking to Bryan. Laters.

Glory be! Baseball Spring Training has started at last.

Has it? Did they start the games already?
-
Has it? Did they start the games already?
Nope, not yet. Just the pitchers and the catchers have reported.
-
Ah. I thought the games were in March.
-
I have a beef stew in the slow cooker - just the thing for a bitter cold day
Can you send directions to Deer park?
Just hop on the LIRR Lar!!
-
Has it? Did they start the games already?
I think March 2 or 3 is the first game.

Thank you for the MIL vibes - I just heard from FIL and she is recovering nicely and may be released as early as Wednesday
LOL! I thought you wrote that you heard from FJL, and I wondered why he was at at the hospital.
He's a really really good friend!!
LOL

Hello, everyone.

Last fall, I used to hear this song on the radio just about every morning when the clock radio came on. Early morning they don't often tell you who sang what song, but I heard it so often, I figured it must be Adele. Nope, it turned out it was Katy Perry, so I guess I didn't know her voice either.

I suspect I'm in DR JMK's camp when it comes to grammar and punctuation. We all make mistakes at times, and sometimes we choose to bend the rules. If you bend the rules you need to be consistent about it, as you're making a statement.
As someone who has edited loads and loads of writing, I cannot recall a single case in which incorrect punctuation got in the way of the rhythm or flow. However, I frequently see examples of incorrect punctuation which has changed the meaning of the sentence and misled the reader.
-
I like JMK's word "dumbification". I usually refer to it as "dumbing down", and was complaining about it just the other day. It really bugs me to see so many errors in professional publications.
-
Would someone refresh my memory on the UFO story? I know I've heard the story before, but it's just not coming to mind.
-
I only stayed for Betsy's 5 o'clock show, JR, and she did fine. She then says if the unit had a male voice, you'd stick in the address and it would say dismissively, "Yeah, I know where that is." ;)
;D
-
I have always found the title of the book FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS to be beautiful.

LOL DR VIXMOM.
DR JEANNE - as I remember the story....that was the punchline after giving a few examples of people seeing UFO's in different circumstances....as I remember it.

I don't have much schoolification, but most people cain't hardly even tell much.

I did put the commit in the right place in my sentence up yonder.

Are there any Adele fans here? Twice now I've tried to listen to her on Amazon clips, but I just can't do it. I just don't care for her music. Maybe it's too pop for me. I don't know.

I think many of us are too old to appreciate Adele's music. Well, at least I am.

DR LAURA we appreciate music at any age.....noise is noise no matter how old we are.

Back from the competition. It ran really long so I had to leave after hearing only two of the final five - they're going to average in my previous scores for the five finalists. They didn't even have us speak this time (a good thing), but they started almost forty-five minutes late and then what was supposed to be a ten-minute break for them to tally scores turned into another forty-five minute break. They began doing the final five at two-thirty, which was when it was all supposed to be over. I stayed till 2:40 and then had to bolt.
-
The real estate lady got here at three. She really only glanced at things to ascertain that everything was in good repair - she was very impressed with how clean I keep everything. I showed her the window with the rotting wood so she can report back that that really needs attending to very soon (I'm told they're working on it). But the best news was that they have no intention of selling for the reasons I stated yesterday. So, I think I can stay put here for at least a few more years.

Great episode of the Simpsons on Arby's. They were doing a spoof of 'Lord of the Flies' and one kid, who hasn't eaten in days, says, "I'm so hungry, I'd almost eat Arby's." The rest gag at the thought and continue on with whatever they were doing.

I hate to disagree with dear reader Jeanne, but I do as regards over punctuation in a conversational sentence, where the eye is literally stopped every couple of words - just because someone at some point deemed certain rules correct, doesn't mean one can't obey them in order for a sentence to read in a similar fashion to one speaking it. If you were speaking a sentence, you wouldn't pause for commas - it would sound weird. I'll put them in if it's necessary, but for a line where I don't want the rhythm broken I absolutely will not.
Here's an example. And boy was she sexy. That sentence reads just the way I would speak it. The fix suggested was: And, boy, was she sexy. That, to me and my eye, is just pointless. So, poll - which do you like better - the absolutely correct or the conversational. I happen to think either is correct.

He was not allowed into the shower. Too much effort. But he's with me now.

She's being profiled on "60 Minutes" tonight, or at least that was scheduled as of yesterday as a lead-in to the Grammys.
Adele has had the #1 album in the U.S. for 20 weeks at this point.
Eerily, in the past 20 years since the "soundscan" measuring has existed, , only THE BODYGUARD, with Whitney Houston's string of hits has spent more weeks at #1.

Watching the "Flame and the Arrow" with Burt Lancaster. It's yet another of those movies where he seems more interested in his male co-stars than in Virginia Mayo.
Will think about how to phrase my answer to BK's question. But I do like commas around names or interjections, such as "And oh boy, oh boy, can that boy fox-trot?" It may be as simple as, that's the way I was taught.

I like the sounds of that high school "Sweeney," Vixmom. I'm wondering if one of those two stars you mentioned was the driving force in making it that elaborate or if their quality caused the people working on it to put in the extra effort.

I am watching this PBS program, CELTIC WOMEN (it was that or Paid Programming). One of the Celtic women started singing "I Dreamed A Dream" and everybody in the audience started applauding. Why do audiences do that? It is hardly a Celtic greatest hit. Are they just happy that they finally heard a song that they knew?

My hunch is that many here would actually like Adele quite a bit. As I mentioned in my review of her Royal Albert Hall show, she's refreshingly unaffected. A lot of her show was just her with a piano accompanist. No strobe lights, no dancing. just a woman standing there singing.
-
Now some of the media is saying that Whitney Houston may have drowned in the bathtub. She had apparently combined a lot of alcohol with a lot of Xanax.
-
I listened to some Adele samples -her song Rumor Has It is one of our Zumba routine songs.

I think I will skip the Grammy Awards tonight - although I am not a regular viewer.....I am not up with the times and don't know many of the nominees - or winners who usually makes jackasses of themselves when saying thanks.....

OK, you convinced me. She is very generous with her music. Often websites only offer a sampling of songs to listen to. Adele gives you multiple videos. http://www.adele.tv/videos/

I think I will watch COLUMBO and then THE INVISIBLE MAN - an episode of the late 50's English series - on Me TV.
Followed by THRILLER.

Oy, all the major news networks have their own Whitney Houston graphics and themes now. I have the sound off but have the tv on waiting for something interesting to come on. I bet the ratings for the Grammys are huge. Jennifer Hudson is doing "I Will Always Love You."

DR ELMORE I hope you voted for Annette.
And Lindbergh!

And Dewey!

See, I understand the commas in the Sondheim lyric - those make sense to me on every level. Commas around names - most of the time I do it or if that's a fix I'll do it.

Dinner soon. They fed us earlier, but it was eleven in the morning and I couldn't see eating pasta, which everyone else was doing. I ate a small salad.

Tonight is a new jernt called Federal. It's across from the El Portal Theatre.

One last posting, with a two-part comment, from me on commas around exclamations.
I grew up reading that way, so I like it like that. Very conservative of me, I know.
The other is the difference between the following two phrases:
Let's eat, Grandma
Let's eat Grandma.

I've put on Murder on the Orient Express for the evening's entertainment. Haven't seen it in ages. Teh credits sequence has me happy with the music of Richard Rodney Bennett.
Now, a little rest while watching.

As someone who reads aa lot I really really hate finding errors in the books I read. I personally don' care about commas or who/whom. But I really dislike finding typos or things like that.

My mom took out Adele's concert from the library and loved it.

As for BK's comma example I really did NOT like the one with the commas.

Obviously one needs the comma before Grandma - understood. In the sentence above, however, the comma after two-part comment totally takes me out of the sentence. Apples and oranges, I suspect.

The Federal is a weird place. I had three appetizers - pulled pork, which was not too good, mac-and-cheese, which was "smoky" and therefore not much to my liking, and a grilled artichoke, which was great (and a great dipping sauce for it). The winner was dessert - peanut butter pie.

Night, all. I will be dreaming of peanut butter pie. And the same sweet dreams to the rest of you.

I have always found the title of the book FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS to be beautiful.
Evidence has been found that William Tell and his family were avid bowlers. However, all the league records were unfortunately destroyed in a fire. Thus we'll never know for whom the Tells bowled.

Here's something that I just found on Facebook. ;D
